  1. honestly, I wasn't looking to shut her up... hi, honey :-*
  2. Two of my favorite posts of all time! And the winners are: gogoplata89 & base ;D
  3. My brother, awood3, took it. You may be able to send him a message thru Indianamat.com. I don't know why I have never asked him to send it to me via email. I guess having a large copy at the bottom of my stairs at home, one in my home office, and one on my desk at work seemed like enough :-\ I will get to work on that for you. Really makes for a nice conversation when people ask about wrestling.
  4. I will be the first to admit that I have not cracked a rule book since I retired. Somethings have changed for sure. I probably should have checked on the changes before I weighed-in on the topic. Thanks for clarifying. Holy cow, I am taking all kinds of heat for this apology! I am sorry for thinking I was wrong when I wasn't wrong! Stop texting me! & now calling...
  5. ...should never happen! Basketball has a shot clock (you must attempt to score in __ seconds). Football has a play clock (you must attempt to advance the ball in __ seconds). Why would you allow a wrestling match to go 0-0 in the first 1 minute without a shot attempt, or something! People pay money to see wrestling. As an official I would find myself trying to explain to some coaches that even in a staring contest someone is working harder than the other!!!!! Pick one and call them for stalling, if nothing happens in 5 seconds, call the other guy! If neither one is doing anything you call it, and call it, and call it, as long as you keep it even (assuming the effort level is evenly poor) in the end you have not effected the outcome; it's a wash, but you can say that you did something.
  6. I keep a picture on my desk from the 2004 Olympic Team Trials. Rulon Gardner and Beyers from Army were going to wrestle the best 2 out of 3 for a spot on the Olympic Team. The whole arena was going nuts! We were all there to see these to monsters go at each other. As the energy reached a fever pitch in the stands the two squared off and touched hands. The referee was stepping back to start the match when the two dropped to their knees and prayed in front of a screaming crowd. The crowd quickly got quiet as these two warriors spent about 90 seconds praying head-to-head on one knee. Every hair on my body stood on end. They stood up together, looked at the ref and nodded. The whistle blew and those two pounded each other. I like that picture of the two kneeling and praying b/c it reminds me that we all have a job to do. We can do our jobs with passion and intensity while still respecting the other person. We all have sacrificed and pushed ourselves to our limits, but what would we be without someone else there to challenge us? Wrestling is how we push each other while showing respect. Try it at work tomorrow... you will know immediately who gets the 'wrestling' philosophy and who doesn't.
  7. Everyone who enters that arena on the floor level: coach, wrestler, referee... has spent time in a gym, alone on a road, etc. dreaming about being able to walk on that floor in front of all those fans. The first time you come out of that tunnel and there is your family and friends looking at you with that hope in their eyes, hope that fate will choose you. Looking up at the ceiling from the floor is a sight that is much different that in the stands. You realize very quickly that this is like no tournament you have ever been in. As you circle the mats and you begin to look around at the other coaches, athletes, and referees that you have watched for years from the seats the reality hits you that you have earned your place here. You realize that you have entered into an elite club of people that many will never know. At that moment your dreams are real, they are attainable, and you can't deny the support you have gained from your community. It surrounds you and it is intoxicating. If you go, take the time to look at the families that come to cheer. It is a moment to remember. The best and worst part about officiating state was after every match you witnessed the reactions of the families and coaches. One dream is realized and one community is devistated at the sound of each buzzer.
  8. If you can watch that without getting butterflies there is something wrong.
  9. I was just wondering. What's the best Valentine's Day gift you have given... since you have become a wrestling fan? This time of year is always a little tricky b/c of the placement of Valentine's Day in the height of the wrestling season. Speaking for myself, last years trip to Indy included a reservation for dinner at St. Elmo's and some dancing after the big dance at Conseco. This year it is reservations at the sushi place and a promise for more 'clap-n-snap' dance lessons for the locals. Any good ideas for how to enjoy the wrestling holiday and keep a happy home with the lady of the house?
  10. The parade. Everyone still has a shot at the top step. All the families there cheering on their wrestler.
  11. Don't kill the messenger, but according to the photo index, a set of pictures in the back of the rule book, that probably was a R2, not loss-of-control. I think the ref may have taken the lesser of two evils by giving E1 and letting the kids decide it in overtime. Atleast, that is what I think he did. It is hard for me to tell exactly what the score was by the video. Once he stepped over and put his knee down on the mat over the leg of the other wrestler it really doesn't matter whether he has that leg or not. I know you may not like the call, but it is very hard to disagree with a picture that is that exact position and is scored R2 by the rule book.
  12. I don't want to pick on the big guys, being one myself, but I used to tell them, "it's not sumo, no one scores for pushing the other around the circle." Just thinking about the matches I refereed with the most stalling... I sometimes wondered what they did in the practice room for 3 hours a day, five days a week. ???
  13. This makes me sick to my stomach. This kind of thing should not be happening at any level, not to mention the ticket round of semi-state for crying out loud.
  14. Congrats to Penn. Great coaching battle in the final. You could tell Jimtown knew that they could win that match from the first whistle to the last. Don't underestimate the program they have. Strategies played out very well. Congrats to Sara! I hear there are plenty of offers for next year to continue in college and/or in freestyle.
  15. When I was much younger the General would take me with him when he had varsity matches in the Region. I would do the JV matches. The first time I was ever there I called the top man for an illegal cross-face/unnecessary roughness at the start of the second period. As I started to signal the penalty someone from the crowd behind me yelled, "You ain't gotta call that!" I actually glanced over to see where it came from b/c it seemed to come from the side of the gym that was with the team that was AWARDED the point. As I started to get them reset to resume the match I heard the same voice say, "We'll get it back." At the start of the 3rd period the wrestler that was on bottom and took the blow from the cross-face that I penalized decided to choose top. To my surprise, when I blew the whistle he lunged forward off his knee and delivered an equally, if not worse, blow with a cross-face to the kid who popped him at the start of the second. I again began to signal the penalty for the top man when the same voice from behind me yelled, "See! I told you we'd take care of it..." Gotta love the Region
  16. Greco Ref can tell this story better than I can, but... At the Olympic Team Trials there were two seasoned athletes that starting slapping each other with some heavy handed tie-ups right off of the whistle. The action prompted the official to interrupt the match immediately and warn them both. The official, feeling very satisfied with his decision, then backed away as if to restart the match. The most decorated of the two athletes who had listened attentively to the warning looked at the official in the eyes and said, "It ain't a freakin' pillow fight!" Everytime I see two guys tuning each other up off the whistle I think of that line! Probably will get a chance to yell that line at Jimtown tonight ;D
  17. Who should we talk to for tickets? At the Charger I had to talk to Coach Harper. I am sure he will be a little more busy tomorrow, need 3! ;D
  18. That was the first state finals match I ever saw in person. I hated to see Devon lose, but that was one of the greatest matches I have ever seen in my life. I tell that story to everyone I meet who wants to know about what the state finals are like. The emotions in the final minutes of that match were incredible. I have been hooked on the finals ever since.
  19. If I am a kid who gets knocked out in sectional, or regionals, and you told me that I would be 25 pounds over my weight on Monday. :-\
