  1. In the NWI Times results, Cathedral, LN, and Westfield are all listed as having 3-2 records. This would mean that they all beat Munster and went 1-1 against each other in their pool. I couldn't figure out this discrepancy since LN is then shown in the round-by-round scores to have gone 4-1 and Westfield 2-3. I looked around further and I promise I saw another post somewhere that the discrepancy was that Westfield had beaten LN and the 35-34 NWI Times score was a misprint. But now I can't find it! I must be mistaken. Can anybody clarify this for sure?
  2. Could you explain why you chose not to put Westfield even in the "under consideration" area, despite their beating Lawrence North and Munster and losing by 4 to Cathedral? I'm not sure there's a spot in the Top 20 for them--it's crowded--but it seems as if they should be in the 17-25 range.
  3. Upset? Yes. Greatest of the last 10 years? No. Yorktown is a good program and may have their best team ever; but because their own notoriety isn't solidified yet, a very solid team upsetting them can't carry the magnitude of some upsets that happened during the state tournament series against teams with full-season credentials and slightly more Top 10 history. There are a couple of factors that I think make us think this was a bigger upset than it really was. First, there's a lot of parity in Indiana right now--maybe more than there ever has been. There's very little separating #5 from #25. This was not true 10 or 12 years ago. Dane, I also think Bellmont's loss by such a significant margin caused you to overvalue Yorktown in your rankings. Everything went right for Yorktown in that match and everything went right for Clay in beating Yorktown. Yorktown will prove to be a Top 10 team this year, but they're probably not as strong as one match caused your Brave emotions to believe they are.
  4. Lawrence Township is not part of IPS. It's actually a pretty solid school system.
  5. Don't get me wrong; if there's a closely contested 10-9 match in the 3rd period, I'd rather be coaching a smart kid than a dumb kid. However, I think success on the mat and GPA have very little connection. I was a first team academic all state selection and won my fair share of matches--but I also got beat by some guys that I think had trouble tying their own shoes. Athletic ability, work ethic, and coaching have made champions out of many bad students...even at the college level. Plus, I think mat savvy can exist in a kid that isn't necessarily book smart. That sixth sense for knowing the clock, the score, and your mat position are not found only in kids with high SAT scores.
  6. I can understand that logic, but Barlow didn't place at state for two reasons: 1) the aforementioned loss to spencer and 2) he lost two matches at semistate to guys that Richey beat and thus had to face Spencer first. Richey placed because he wrestled well at semistate, then won his deserved easier first round match. Barlow had great wins and ho-hum losses last year. I understand why he's a difficult one to rank. I would add that the step up in quality of a particular wrestler is typically greatest between his 9th and 10th grade seasons...with slightly diminishing improvements in the final two off-seasons...another reason I may have leaned toward Richey at the start. Anyway, I was just surprised since you pretty much went by the results of the last two weeks of the season everywhere else. I'm just nitpicking. Thanks for all your work on the rankings!
  7. Most weight class rankings went strictly by state finals performance. Why is Barlow ahead of Richey at 130? I think Barlow beat Richey at regionals, but then Richey won semi-state with Barlow finishing 4th (Richey beat both guys that beat Barlow) and Richey placed at state while Barlow did not. There are other classes that could have adjustments based on one guy beating another in one match earlier in the season...why was this the only obvious such adjustment made? I don't know either guy; just an observation.
  8. Wow, that was an even more in-depth answer than I would have hoped for. Thanks for responding. And I get the football comparison. I often wonder why more coaches with a great offense don't go for 2 instead of a tying extra point in regulation of a game. If you have a play or two that can get you in the end zone at least 50% of the time, your odds of winning are at least as good as if you go to overtime. What does it matter if you lose the 50/50 proposition in regulation or overtime? The same could be said of some tied wrestling matches. If you think you have at least as good of a chance to take a kid down in the last minute of regulation as you do in overtime, I get why you might cut him and take a shot at it. What does it matter if you lose 3-2 in regulation or lose later in overtime if the odds of both results are about the same? Anyway, thanks again for the very insightful post.
  9. You're a quality fundraiser. The truth is (no joke), I'm writing from an impoverished area of a large city in eastern Africa. My wife and I are sustained financially in our work in large part by the contributions of family and friends. We literally have every penny budgeted so that we can manage a little supporting of friends in other parts of the world that are doing similar work to us. I guess my curiosity will have to linger. Of course I know all of what 'lefhanded headlock' commented above is true...I'm always just curious to hear from the horse's mouth how people approached matches. Enjoy the Chicago Marathon...my wife ran it in 2003. It's a great event. And I genuinely appreciate the work you're doing for children. I hope you meet your goals!
  10. I wish you the best with your cause. As you said, 26.2 is no joke! A little off topic...I hope you don't mind. I always enjoyed watching you and your unorthodox style in high school. I've just always had one question about your finals match. I'm asking this with all sincerity as a casual observer and fan of the sport: what was your and the BG staff's thought process with choosing top when you had the choice? As amazing as you were on top, I still thought it was a big risk that could go either way. I know it's a long time ago, and if you don't feel compelled to give any insight, no problem...you don't know me from Adam. Any thoughts?
  11. Elkhart Memorial is not a private school. You must be thinking of Evansville Memorial.
  12. I think some people are jumping into the discussion having not read the rest of the thread: Indianamat.com will continue to publish individual rankings right here on this website. They are asking for feedback as to whether we would pay a small fee to view them. This has not been officially decided yet. IHSWCA will continue to publish a coaches' poll team ranking.
  13. Howe and Oliver into the semifinals. Howe has the Russian next! Fortune lost in the quarters, but can still place as high as third if the guy who beat him advances. The Indian kid that beat Kuhn is in the semifinals also. Kuhn advances to the repechage round if the Indian wins one more.
  14. So, if you didn't take the time to read the .pdf, here's a summary: Proposal A: Evenly distributes kids through 14 weight classes based on pre-season, hydrated weights. Proposal B: Evenly distributes kids through 14 weight classes based on 7% body fat optimum weight. Proposal C: A synthesis of the two distributions. I'll take C...and it seems the NFHS is leaning that way based on its lengthy description and subtle sales job of Proposal C.
  15. I've never understood why there couldn't be a simple seeding system that didn't involve a seeding meeting. Anything is better than nothing in that you could at least put the cream of the crop in separate sections of the bracket. Here's a very simple seeding procedure that would make a big difference in seeing the best matches later in the tournament: 1. Best finish at state finals (any year) 2. State qualifier (any year) 3. Semi-state qualifier (any year) 4. Best placement at Connersville (must be Top 8; any year) 5. Current season win/loss pct. (minimum 10 matches) Seed the Top 8. Blind draw the rest. As I said, this system would not be as effective as a seeding meeting that analyzes head-to-head matchups and schedule strength and such, but it would at least distribute the majority of the top wrestlers. It would require only a simple pre-tourney info sheet from coaches and only a little more time for the tournament organizers. Any thoughts?
  16. The Niles dude was at least part Iranian (his name made it clear). Iranian wrestlers almost always look like they OD'd on an experimental version of rogaine.
  17. A few comments about the latest edition of the pound-for-pound rankings: 1. Raley is mentioned in the Honorable Mention category when two guys ranked higher in his weight class on this website (Brooks/Johns) are not listed anywhere. Let's not forget that these two were literally an eyelash below Eppert/Wright last year. I've seen a number of people argue that Raley should be in these rankings, but I just don't see it yet. Maybe at 103, but not at 119 this year. 2. Wright (a national champion who destroys anyone not of national prominence) drops back behind Sandefur, who is a nice wrestler for Indiana but is simply not the same caliber in the national context. We fall in love with wins/losses and forget to keep it all in the context of the competition that's being faced. 3. I'd have a hard time not putting Harper #1 on an Indiana High School list. He's beaten Quiroga three times and is much better at folkstyle than freestyle. He's best on the mat, and this just doesn't come into play on the national freestyle scene (or in shortened folkstyle matches). Head-to-head at the same weight in high school/college rules, I'd pick him against anyone in Indiana. One more question somewhat unrelated: Where would Mitchell Richey be on a list like this if he were wrestling in a top program? I don't think I've been more impressed by the talent of anyone at the state finals the past couple years, yet he probably won't ever wrestle under the lights because of his rough edges and slightly lesser conditioning. Is he another freaky Brennan Cosgrove-type talent that just hasn't been fully tapped?
