  1. 11 wins over semi-state ranked guys between these 7 sometime on Saturday. Five beat at least one ranked guy to advance to state, and 6 of the 7 beat a ranked opponent at some point in the tournament. Big props to Yoder as a #7 beating #4 and #1 to win the semi-state and to unranked Mavros for beating 3 ranked opponents on the same day.
  2. Ha. You haven't read my other stuff if you think this is bad. My beautiful wife is laughing at your post.
  3. I posted this on New Year's Eve 2009. People forget Griffith was very relevant with individuals AND as a team for a 6 or 7 year stretch in the 2000s. Anyway, definitely not a historical or current powerhouse: There are probably many ways to determine which are the top programs in the state, but I thought it would be interesting to take a completely objective mathematical approach and see what the results spit out. Basically, I considered two performance elements in my rankings: 1) Coaches' Trophy points scored in the Individual State Finals for the last 10 years and 2) success in the team tournament over the last 10 years based on a point system. The point system I developed for team tournament success is based on awarding the team champion approximately the same number of points as the typical Coaches' Trophy winner (90), the team runner-up similar points to the Coaches' runner-up (70), the team semi-finalist losers similar points to 3rd/4th place points for the Coaches' Trophy (55), and so on. I awarded 45 points for quarterfinal losers, 30 for regional champions, 20 for regional runners-up, and 10 for first round regional losers (for 2009, with the new system, I gave 30 to regional runners-up, 20 to regional first round losers, and 10 to sectional runners-up for consistency in awarding points to 64 teams). The final results listed below are intended to be a synthesis of individual tournament success and team tournament success, hopefully revealing the true depth and quality of the top programs in the state of Indiana. There are not many surprises to be found. Here is the list with some explanation for each. I give you Indiana's Top 12 Programs of the Decade: 12. 4. Surely you haven't forgotten the Angel, Tsirtsis, Hernandez, Jose E. years?
  5. E-ville link not working. The others are fine.
  6. I had 17 straight through 2008 (with every single result hand-written in each program), but have lived overseas ever since. This would have been my 20th also. Bummer...but don't worry, decbell, it's fun to follow online too.
  7. I graduated in your class and lived 30 minutes from Mishawaka and 15 minutes from Middlebury. Yours was one that I remember quite clearly. Some humble insight. thanks
  8. Bellmontfan is the champ! On the strength of 4 correct champ picks and being the only one with Bellmont, he outdistances xgamehoss by 6.7 points. 10. 130 quite weak for both...Adams win would swing 'matches favored' tally to 8-6 for Bellmont.
  11. Bellmont/Carroll also shakes out 7-7 as the most probable scenario. It will again potentially come down to bonus points
  12. I would say the switch and the Faurote match both were the huge keys. Without the Faurote win, they definitely lose. Without the switch, they also potentially lose 28-27 or 28-28 on criteria.
  13. Great dual...what are past scores between carroll and kueneke?
  14. Some nice stripes monitoring this thread. Nice to have the Wednesday off, eh?
  15. With the Faurote win and Hiestand holding on, the match projects at 7 wins apiece. It's looking more and more like it will come down to bonus points.
  16. Mid-week weight cut doesn't seem to be doing van horn any favors. Faurote rolling in the second...up 5-2 with 2 stalling calls against van horn.
  17. I've considered wearing one under my jeans to watch tournaments--just for old time's sake. My wife's talked me out of it.
  18. Sometimes this is true. For example, I remember beating a particular kid once and then him coming out much more aggressive and killing me the second time we wrestled. But sometimes I don't know if there is an explanation. I got thumped twice by a kid in the season and wasn't able to do anything against him. Then in the post-season I took him down. I reversed him. I scrambled with him. It was completely different from the season. He gets a last-minute reversal to win, but it was a match. Still, I couldn't tell you what I did differently or what game plan I had. I really think, as others have said, sometimes it's just not explained with a simple reason. Things just go right (or totally wrong).
  19. None. You earn 10 points for a correct state finalist. Then, if your placement of that finalist is off, you lose between 1-3 points from the 10. In other words, pick a state qualifier and get 7-10 points for doing so. Miss a pick and get 0 points.
  20. He is a long-time historian of wrestling that has books full of old information. As someone else said, he probably just copied the updated files from the IHSAA and assumed it was right because it was in his own records. No joke. He's literally an old man who is very generous with his information and help on this website. There is no way it was not an honest mistake. He most likely just hasn't been back on to realize you want to hear an explanation.
  21. We've all seen them happen. The 10-loss 4th placer from a semi-state beats the undefeated semi-state champ from another semi-state. The kid who got majored at the dual turns the tables and knocks out his prior conqueror at semi-state when it matters most. The #10-in-the-state beast loses by 5 in the first round of regional. But why? Why do these events occur? Why do results with no logical explanation happen? Is it nerves on the part of the favored kid? Is it extra adrenaline for the underdog? Is it conflicting styles that happen to work just right? Is it our fixation on rankings that causes the illusion of an upset that shouldn't have really been that big of a surprise? Why do upsets happen?
