  1. Ok, here's a quick way to estimate what your team's Genius POTENTIAL Rating will be for the upcoming season: 1. Count how many definite returning starters you have. 2. Subtract 6. 3. Multiply by 2.5 4. Add this to your POTENTIAL Rating from last season (or subtract if negative). Example: Your POTENTIAL last year was 60. You have 10 returning starters. Subtract 6 from 10 to give you 4. Multiply by 2.5 to get 10. Add 10 to your POTENTIAL from last year to get a predicted 2011-12 POTENTIAL of 70. So, what's your predicted rating? Here are last year's ratings for reference: http://www.indianamat.com/genius-ratings-potential-overall/
  2. Tough break for Jaggers. It seemed like he could have beaten some guys that got through, but he had to face one of the toughest guys right away.
  3. Well, first of all, the French guy is much better than you would expect coming out of France. He's been fringe Top 10 for the past couple of years, so he's no slouch. Tactically speaking, according to Reece, he just wasn't aggressive enough in running his stuff...he let the Frenchman come to him. And when you're one of the Top 10 or 15 in the world, you've got plenty of tricks in the bag to come with. Finally, I would read between the lines of some comments Reece made and suggest he didn't take him as seriously as he should have. With the world champ Russian looming in the semi's and Reece having beaten plenty of guys in the past of the Frenchman's quality, I think he probably wasn't as dialed in as sometimes. It really is a shame. It would have been great to have had his weight locked up for the Olympics for the U.S. And besides getting a crack at the best in the world in the semi's, I think Reece would have been a tough match for the Japanese that ended up with the bronze over the Frenchman.
  4. I often notice nearly 20 people perusing this site, and many times there's not much action on the board. Y2, has a chat room been discussed? I don't remember reading about it. There are often interesting things to discuss, but I think the board can slow down when there aren't as many people around and posts have long lag times between them. I would often jump on and read or post for 10 minutes, but if there's nothing I just leave. With a chat room option, I could talk for 10 minutes with someone that's been posting on an interesting topic instead. I'm guessing there's a reason we don't have it, but as I said, I don't remember seeing it.
  5. He may have meant "next" year (12-13), not "this" year (11-12). But Howe being there in 12-13 is obviously not a guarantee either.
  6. Ok, I'll bite on that. Kudukhov of Russia looks unbelievable at 60kg. Have you seen anyone run anything with success against him in the last couple years? I really wish Reece could have wrestled the match he wanted to wrestle against the Frenchman and gotten a shot at him--but it's tough to see any openings for offense at all on him. He's so strong and balanced and smooth with everything he runs or defends.
  7. Good call, TC. Were you at the Worlds? What do you think Howe has to do to slow down the Burroughs train? His quickness and long arms seem to make that low single to a lift to a push-out almost unstoppable with freestyle parameters.
  8. These are nice wins, and I think Molloy is national caliber. I meant tangible placement when I said "only had in-state success" with regard to comparing accomplishments. I didn't phrase that very well. I love watching Molloy, and I think he's going to be killer to face for a long time.
  9. Brooks is a Junior Nationals finalist. Todd and McKinley have their state titles at weights higher than 103, where the majority of competitors are freshmen (plus the obvious Todd over Phillips head-to-head probably caused WU to fudge on the "accomplishments" rule in this instance) Sliga is a many-time national champ with in-state losses only to others with national accolades. Molloy has only in-state success, with none of it coming against anyone that had success on a national level.
  10. Nice lists. If you don't get a ton of discussion on them now (but I think you will), re-post them in about 6 weeks and they could be very good discussion fodder.
  11. I'm not trying to take sides here, but I wrestled 135 my senior year and weighed 145 by the time of the championship match or the 5th dual every week. And I wasn't going crazy with food or drink because I didn't want to be bloated for matches; I was just taking in what my body asked for. Many others I talked to were the same. Fighters who cut significant weight often weigh nearly 20 pounds over their weigh-in weight 24 hours later. I would argue that a significant part of that comes back in replenishment of fluids in the first 8 hours (i.e. 4pm after an 8am weigh-in).
  12. Yeah, it's been a crazy year for him. He was talking about in his post-match interview how a year ago he was still rehabbing, just hoping to be able to come back at a high level for college wrestling again and maybe give Howe a challenge--not even thinking about international competition.
  13. That makes sense. Burroughs deserves the position, and everyone will be geared up for the trials anyway, no matter their seeding. With the new system for using world tournaments to help decide the qualifier, it's logical to take a slightly redundant step out of the system in a shorter Olympic year.
  14. Yeah, the general process makes sense, but I'm not sure what they do in an Olympic Trial year. I assume there is a big tournament or two on the schedule between the trials and the Olympics that will be required in a situation like Reece's from this past year. But I don't know the specifics. Also, someone was suggesting that Burroughs is automatically into the final of the trials without having to wrestle at US nationals or US open or whatever it is next year to earn the spot. I don't know if that's true. Anyway, I guess we'll find all of it out as we go. No problem with the updates. I live overseas where the event was happening mostly outside my work hours, and my wife was traveling this weekend so I was able to check updates more often than I would normally.
  15. Dlagnev loses to a Georgian on a ball draw in the third, 1-0, 0-1, 1-0. He finishes fifth. So, a final summary of our performance in men's freestyle: 1 gold 1 bronze 3 fifths (2 weights still need to qualify for Olympics) 3rd place as a team behind Russia and Iran Greco summary: 1 fifth (6 weights need to qualify for Olympics at other tournaments) Women's summary: 2 bronze 2 fifths (not sure about Olympic qualification, because I don't know if Olympics now use all the women's weights)
  16. By the way, because of the new qualification rules that reward winning international tournaments, people on the USA wrestling site are saying that Howe will not only have to win the US trials tournament and beat Burroughs 2 of 3, but will also have to place higher than him at an international tournament. I don't know all the exact procedures, but Howe has an uphill battle no matter how you look at it because of how amazing Burroughs has become.
  17. We're locked into 3rd as a team. Iran won their other gold medal match. Also, there was a chance Azerbaijan could catch us, but we've clinched top 3 because Burroughs won.
  18. We're golden! Burroughs wins the gold over the 2-time world medalist Iranian, 3-2, 4-1. He's so quick with such reach that his bread and butter in freestyle has become a low single to a lift to a drive out of bounds. He can do it almost at will. Fun to watch and be on his side instead of cheering against him when Howe is wrestling.
  19. espn3 not working. Here's a turkish site that's working perfectly: http://www.trt.net.tr/Canli/canli.aspx?kanal=TV5&slv=0 Burroughs up in about 10 minutes. Dlagnev 2 matches after that.
  20. Team points update going into final session: Russia 43, Iran 40, U.S. 37. If we win our two matches and Iran loses theirs, we tie them for 2nd. We're head-to-head in Burroughs' match, so really only 3 matches have to go our way for that too happen. Whatever the case, a HUGE improvement from last year's performance in freestyle.
  21. I think their names keep them out of the "surprising" or "new" category. People noticed them from the first time they stepped on the mat because of the school/name associations.
  22. Dlagnev loses in an awful match. The Belarussian opponent blocks the whole match while Dlagnev attacks and shoots and attacks and shoots. Dlagnev loses both ball draws and loses the match 1-0, 1-0. He'll wrestle for bronze against an opponent TBD.
  23. Burroughs will wrestle for gold!! 0-2, 5-4, 3-0 Crazy, crazy match that finishes with the Azerbaijani slapping Burroughs with under 10 seconds and busting his ear so that there's blood all over the whole mat. Wild. Reminder: Finals on ESPN3 at 12:30pm.
  24. United States is rising! Tervel Dlagnev shocks the 2-time Olympic champ from Uzbekistan! He just got HAMMERED by him last month. Loses the ball draw in the third and gets away to win! Into the semi's. Qualifies the weight for the Olympics, which means we've now qualified 5 of the 7 weights for freestyle. Amazing job so far by the U.S. And a realistic chance at gold for both Dlagnev and Burroughs.
