MERRILLVILLE | After the official signalled the start of the match, Andrean junior Kwang Sik "Tommy" Chae made two fists, raised his arms and started swinging them wildly as he hopped around on the mat.
Chae's unorthodox movements gave Lake Station's coaching staff quite a scare during his American high school wrestling debut.
"He came out (with his hands up) like he was gonna box," Andrean coach Julio Cisneros said. "The Lake Station coaches were like, 'Uh oh.' I was like, 'No. He's not gonna punch the kid.'"
Cisneros was right. Chae didn't strike his opponent from Lake Station, but he did pin him. Then the real fun started.
"He gets up and he starts dancing (as if he were riding a motorcycle)," Cisneros said as he mimicked Chae's celebratory motions. "It was his first match and he won, and he was real pumped up. I started laughing, but I told him afterward, 'You can be happy but you went a little overboard. You crossed that line.'"
