  1. From the 2010-11 case book, page 43 Rule 7.1.5 situation C: Is it a headlock anytime the arms encircle the head and lock? Consider the situation where Wrestler A has a double grapevine and the two wrestlers are belly to belly in a pinning situation. If Wrestler A reaches under the head of the opponent and locks or overlaps the hands to lift the opponents headin order to prevent a bridge, would this be considered an illegal headlock? Ruling: This is not a headlock because the pressure applied here is against the head and not around it. The pressure would be no different than the pressure applied against the head when using a 3/4 nelson.
  2. I took my son to Mesquite, TX back in 2003 for a USA National meet (part of the dominator series). They wrestled in a rodeo arena. The facility put big pieces of cardboard down over the dirt and tapes the seams together and laid the mats right on top of that. The result was that the ground was no where near flat. Each mat had it's own peaks and valleys and you really had to be aware of where you were stepping and placing your weight. Overall, it was a neat experience.
  3. I've got to ask the most obvious question...." Would your invitational be classed? " : Yes only people with class would be allowed to enter, so you would not be invited:) All joking aside, I do not think the IHSAA would allow this to happen during the competition season since they'd consider this an all-star meet. Wrestlers are allowed to compete unattached during the competition season with a waiver from the IHSAA (requires a signature from coach, AD or principal) but the HS team must not have a match on the date of competition.

  5. Wahoo to you! Here are the top 15 schools with the number of qualifiers they have had in the last 10 years: Mater Dei 86 Lawrence North 62 Mishawaka 59 Portage 58 Bellmont 57 Cathedral 52 Perry 45 Warren Central 38 Merrillville 36 Hobart 36 Franklin 36 Yorktown 35 Bloomington South 35 Crown Point 34 Beech Grove 34 What do all of these schools have in common? They all put the team first! They do what they must to win as a team. Something must be wrong with the system if we should put the individual first. Shouldn't these teams be at the bottom of the list if we put the individual first? What I see that they all have in common is each has / had a very well established coach running the program. Anyone that knows Indiana wrestling can look at the list and name the head coach for that school.
  6. Some may have higher goals than others. Some may train 12 months while others train 3 months a year. I know of one case where a kid who was the only one on the team that trained 12 months a year suffered a season ending injury after his coach bumped him up. If they are all giving the same effort then treat them equally but if they are not it's not fair to the kid that works in the off-season to not be placed in a spot that he's earned.
  7. Nice story...but if he had a realistic shot at being a 103 lb. state champ I bet he would have challenged his teammate for the 103 spot.
  8. I would not object to a single class individual state tournament and a 2 class team state tournament. Logistically, it could be a scheduling nightmare since the results of individual Sectional would not select the entries into team regional anymore.
  9. Based on the numbers presented it could be argued that single class wrestling is not hurting the state of California. They have 189 wrestlers in Div. 1 schools with 65 being on teams out of the state of California.
  10. This cuts both ways. I think Boom444 put it best. There is a place for both. I believe it starts with focus on what is in the best interest of each one of the individuals involved and the quality of the team will follow. This is not easily done. Sometimes individuals are sacrificed to benifit the team and with that I have problem. The individual hard work of a wrestler can be squandered by a few lazy a's who won't put out for either team or individual success. On an individual level you get out what you put in without having to carry the slackers. You work hard, you win, you earned it!! If you look at Nationals Team these are all guys who work hard individually and come together as a team. They are also the guys who advance to the next level. This scenario is the best of both worlds. Like I said before it starts with motivated individuals. Sorry Y2, my son got better by going to Camps , clinics, national tournaments and wrestling school (ie--Overtime in Ill). They were classmates not teammates. No offense intended here but most high school kids do not see the big picture, therefore it is difficult to depend on them in wrestling as a team concept. Hope this all makes sense. If not zing away. I agree. To some, wrestling is something they want to do for 3 months a year and for others it's a 12 months a year. How many HS teams had their whole team competing at ISWA Folkstyle state a couple weeks ago? I bet there were none. How many kids were the lone representative of their HS team at ISWA Folkstyle state? I bet quite a few. If this is truly a team sport shouldn't they have all been there working to get better for next year?
  11. Can you small class supports respond to buscowrestling's comments?
  12. You get exposure to college coaches by picking up the phone and calling them, sending them a tape and attending their summer camp. Believe it or not, it's really that simple. The college wrestling coaches resources are very limited and you can't wait for them to find you. Chances are they'll never find you or know of your interest unless you let them know. Unless you're a national place winner at Fargo or Fila they probably have never heard of you. You need to make the effort.
  13. How does limiting the pool of competitors elevate the level of competition? :
