  11. Indiana and other middle-tier wrestling states' wrestlers do struggle in par terre compared with young wrestlers from the power states. It's mostly a case of not having to develop those skills at an elite level while competing in Indiana. Our very best wrestlers dominate their in-state opponents and are only tested a relatively low number of times per season. Compare that with a state like Pennsylvania, where even the best wrestlers are tested week in and out and cannot afford to have any weaknesses on the mat. In Indiana, it's not emphasized to the same degree that wrestling in neutral is. Of course, there are exceptions to this (Howe and Escobedo are good examples).
  12. Someone mentioned a New Castle 112 would not be competing as well. He didn't give a name, though.
  13. Whether from injury or other reasons, I just wanted to centralize a list of all the wrestlers who qualified for their respective semi-state but won't be competing this weekend. Off the top of my head, there's: Shepherd, Western Kolb, Tri-West Bullock, Hamilton Heights I know there's more.
  14. If I can make it, I'll have current results for New Castle. I'm having a hard time finding someone to watch the little dingo. Still have my fingers crossed that something will come through.
  15. Some possible ones at New Castle: 119 Millikan over Catron 125 Williams over Moore 125 Maxwell over Marshall 125 Logan over Clark 130 Dickey over Fellers 130 Morris over Franklin 140 Lile over Duncan 160 McNeal over Farrell 160 Bill over Wasson (this one has a decent shot to happen) 189 Garrity (if he's wrestling) over Dalton 189 Melby over Johnson-Jones 215 Jacquet over Forman 285 Alafogianis over Bell The only one I would predict to actually happen is with the Bill/Wasson match and that's not a reflection on Wasson--Bill is really tough on his feet.
  16. Among many other reasons, considering that Team Indiana Gold finished as runners-up at the Brute Scholastic Duals, I would say the state of Indiana wrestling is pretty decent. Jason Bryant is quoted as saying it was, by far, the best Indiana team he had ever seen. Guys like Atwood, Mosier, Wright, Quiroga and McMurray all went undefeated at the Duals. Check into their competition--they faced some of the very best wrestlers in the country. Duckworth majored and very nearly teched a New Jersey runner-up who New Jersians say gave Scott Winston his best match. We have a reigning Cadet National champ (Wright), a Freshman Nationals champ (Roach), a Sophomore Nationals runner-up (Duckworth) and numerous placers in many prestigious national events. We have a reigning 7th place finisher (Lovejoy) who beat nationally ranked stud Shane Gentry. Our depth is as good as it's been in recent memory: Wright, Eppert, Chalfant, Duckworth, McMurray, Porras, Napules, Harper, Sandefer, Shrewsbury, Atwood, Quiroga, Brooks, Hawkins, Tsirtsis, Dillon, March, Mosier, Runyan, Sims, Baker....all of these guys (and others) have had national success. There are literally too many good wrestlers to list. I can't recall a time quite like this in recent years. There may not be a Howe, Tsirtsis or Escobedo (key words are 'may not'), but there are many, many national caliber wrestlers currently competing in our state who will be heard from after they graduate from high school.
  17. New Castle is set up so that it's impossible not to have a great view of all four mats. Plus, unlike the mandatory balcony seating at some venues, you can get really close to the mat.
  18. New Castle is a fantastic site for the semi-state. I hope they never change it.
  19. I feel like I know something about the Fort Wayne semi-state now. Thanks
  20. Not sure about Moore's loss but that area has produced some really good individuals in recent years. Really enjoyed your Merrillville article, karl. Not too shabby for a nihilist
