  1. Jake's been workin his behind off for this one, and managed to finally stay healthy for the State tournament. CONGRATULATIONS JAKE! Mike, Jason and Cody Crary
  2. Once again we were treated to some great matches Saturday and Sunday. Josh Stewarts take down w/10 sec. to go to win 11-9 over a very tough Danny Baker in Novice 90# Championship Jake Tuckers take down w/10 sec. to go to win 5-4 over a bruising Brock Morgan in the Novice 80# Championship Baily Lehue fighting off a relentless Brett Johnson in the Championship(6-0) at Novice 75# Jason Crary in a barn burner 13-8 over Blake Rypel in the Championship at Novice 85# Chad Red jr. holding off a Tyler Ferguson 4-0 in the Championship at Novice 65# Nate Walton rolling to another State Championship over a very impressive Ethan Smiley at Inter. 75#(I loved Smiley's composer, even when he came off his back he never let down.) Jacob Grey scoring fast and holding off Cody Crary 5-2 in the Semi's at Inter. 80# Congratulations to all, thanks for the memories. These were some that I remembered, let's hear some of the others.
  3. I also make it a point not to complain about officials, they do a tough thankless job. But my intension is to mention this in a constructive way. In a match that I was coaching one wrestler had another in a figure four on the body, when the action stopped the ref acknowledged the violation and actually said he's not going to call that in a kids tournament, and explained to the boy why he couldn't figure four the body and no penalty point. These were novice wrestlers, and this is not a learning day per say, IT'S THE STATE FINALS be responsible make the call. I also saw one wrestler using an anaconda choke in three different matches with no call, check me if I'm wrong but someone's been showing that boy some MMA submition holds. But hey if it's not called it's not illegal right geeezzzz.... I will say that I did also see some very good officiating as well.
  4. It doesn't say in the flier if coolers will be allowed, they were allowed at the elementary qualifier, so I'm going to asume they will be allowed. Anyone know for sure?
  5. Munster will be sending some kids to Hobart as well. We can't wait to see the new facility.
  6. That's an excellent point. It really depends on the kid. As an intermediate he can get some kids that have been wrestling for 4-5 years.
  7. It was a long day. The Portage crew did a great job, 580 is a big number. The long day was no reflection on how the tournament was run, just allot of wrestlers! As far as the refs, I couldn't agree more. Is it going to take someone getting seriously hurt to get paid officials? There's been allot of liability talk on the board about wrestling up in age, what about unlicensed officials? I saw some scary stuff as well. As a matter of fact, watching the duel last night between Mich. and Mich St. the refs were more careful with the college guys as far as potentially dangerous situations. I watched some video last night of a particular situation, it looked even worse than it did live and to see the "ref" standing over the kids and doing nothing, VERY BAD SITUATION.
  8. Your right guys, this is a state level issue. I spoke with the USA office last year about this, they told me at the time they advise but they don't dictate to the states on this. This is a workable issue and I think the ISWA will consider the change, provided it's done the right way. We had allot of support for this last year, I'm more than willing to call on that same support again if it will help get this done.
  9. I would love to talk to the ISWA about this. Getting to Indy for a meeting will be difficult, but I will make every effort. I agree that talk here is meaningless. But you have to agree the subject does get quite a bit of attention. As I remember last year there was allot of support for this, I don't remember any opposition at all. I'm feeling a poll question coming on. I wish everyone could see the change in a wrestler that comes over time from wrestling up. We have some kids that just wrestle different when they move up each year to a new age group. It's seems more mental than physical. When you see a kid get past that mental wall, you can see not only in their wrestling but in the way they carry themselves on the mat that the age of their opponent truly doesn?t matter to them anymore. It's a fantastic aspect of growth for a kid. I've been fortunate enough to witness it a few times now. We talk allot in this sport about not letting your mind fool you into thinking you can't. From my experience it might be the single biggest hurdle for kids.
  10. not sure if you are agreeing or not, but you've hit it on the head. Why get up at dawn every Sunday morning to sit in a gym all day long if there's no benefit? The key word, as I said, is DEVELOPMENT that's the big picture. The sooner you start wrestling older kids the better off the wrestler will be later, SOCIALAZTION, after awhile it's no big deal. I tend to agree with the people who have "been there done that"(College wrestlers and coaches). i think that it really does cripple youth who really want to grow in this sport. For some unless they drive 3 to 4 hours away each weekend they end up wrestling and wrestling the same kids...they could easily bump up and get experience in wrestling a better and older wrestler. will all of these be losses, no, im not saying that but in my expereince personally when i have bumped up and lost or wrestled better competition and lost i learned more from that than taking an easy win against a familiar opponent. Kids that come from feeder programs or large clubs that have the resources and varied age groups so that the younger kids can get reps with older more experienced wrestlers are the ones who grow most. Look at some of the top programs in the state and you will see that they for the most part have a successful club that allows wrestling in between age groups. I think that this same experience can be attained on the mat in a match with older opponents too.... Excellent Points.
  11. not sure if you are agreeing or not, but you've hit it on the head. Why get up at dawn every Sunday morning to sit in a gym all day long if there's no benefit? 12. If other states are allowing freestyle and greco matches between kids that are not in the same age group, except for the cadet rule, then they are doing so with the possibility of losing their sanctioning and insurance that is being carried by USA Wrestling. It is against the rules, and knowing several of the people on the board, they will not ever go along with it just because it is what other states are doing. Now if they are running these tournaments under a different sanctioning body those rules may be different. The rule wouldn't be changed to simply follow what others are doing. It is a rule, but the evolution of many sports, wrestling included, at times dictates rule changes in order to move forward as a community and as an organization. The change would be made in the interest of development, the top wrestling states are allowing it for a reason. Many who have been involved in the Indiana wrestling community for years and have wrestled or coached at the NCAA level are surprised when hear that wrestling up isn't allowed. We will respect and abide by the ISWA rule, weather we agree with it or not. We will also make the short hike over to Ill. and take advantage of the fact that they do allow wrestling up in age at every opportunity. It's not rocket science nor is it a secret that it's a vital developmental tool for our kids, weather we decide to take advantage of it is another story.
  13. Thanks Shane, those two never disapoint when they get together. While we were waiting to get the final started, I looked around to see groups of kids and adults hustling over to watch the match. Really good stuff!
  14. here we go again.... The fact of the matter is, we(the state of Indiana)are the only state in the Midwest that doesn?t allow second year age group kids to wrestle up in age. In my conversations with surrounding states(Ill.,Mich.,Ohio,IA.,Wis.,OK.)they all agree that going up in age is one of their most vital developmental tools. None that I have spoken to can recall any issues that have come from wrestling up in age. The ISWA is currently sanctioning events that not only allow wrestling up in age but promote it, i.e. elementary duels, elementary qualifiers. Not to mention Middle School wrestling. I saw many matches at the qualifier and at the National Duels where 2nd graders where wrestling 5th graders, what a great development opportunity for the younger kids. We need to be affording that same development opportunity to any wrestler that's ready for that challenge. Why hold them back when it's already being done??
  15. Who's making the trip to Chesterton this Sunday? Other than Jasper, Chesterton is the only event in the north section. Munster will have 20 wrestlers or so. Always a well run event.
  16. Munster also going to Crown Point, always a well run event.
  17. How is it an advantage if everyone is allowed to wear them? Both wrestlers wearing them dosn't make it eaiser for wrestler A who has a good leg attack to keep a leg on a shot against wrestler B wearing tights who prefers to defend on his feet and sprawl, and wears tights for that reason. . A sprawl is be more effective with tights. Harder to hold the leg. I've had wrestlers who wear them tell me so.
  18. A great artical in the Hammond Times about CIA NWI. http://www.nwi.com/articles/2009/01/16/sports/indiana_prep_sports/docb6ec1228d193bb088625753c0056f01a.txt
  19. I've always thought they should not be allowed, they do give an advantage.
  20. I was right there for that one, and the funny thing about that was that the ref said he "didn't hear what Lance said, but he didn't like his attitude, and he was out of the coaches box". Interesting huh... So without a coaches box warning or any warning at all he took a point. I thought overall throughout the officiating was just descent. That particular ref put himself in a tough spot more than once during that duel with some very quick calls. His alternate also made a couple of phantom locking hands calls that he was out of position for. I have video of one locking hands call that he would have needed x-ray vision to make. The hands didn't look to be touching. Of course I have the benefit of video, but the ref would have literally had to see through the wrestlers. If he wanted to take a point he should have taken on when a headgear was thrown after a match. That?s a rule that is on the book?s. I don?t want to overshadow the fact that is was a GREAT duel, nor downplay the success of Red Cobra. The crowd around the mat was awesome, it seemed like everyone came to watch. On another note, in what I thought were the matches of the day, Carver James beat Dominic Suttermister twice. Both by one point and once in OT. I don't think Suttermister has lost twice in the last three years.
  21. What a great experience for the kids! We had a great time. Thanks Brandi for all your work putting this together for everyone. Fantastic competition, some of the best youth wresters in the eastern half of the country. Everyone competed very hard. Mike Crary
  22. That's a great story! Congratulations Ryan!! Munster Wrestling
  23. I can't wait for an Estrada-McMurray match up. It was inhumane what Estrada did to John Tyler last week. OMG! I think it was 14-3 when Estrada pinned in the second period. With Estrada not even close to getting scored on. Estrada's athleticism is just out of this world.
