  1. North pins East Dogs hold on vs. determined O?s BY ANDY PROFFET aproffet@therepublic.com Judging the coaches by their words alone doesn?t quite tell the story of Columbus North?s wrestling win over city rival East on Wednesday. While North coach Jason Warthan was in some ways disappointed despite his team?s 35-30 victory, East coach Chris Cooper was optimistic after the loss. ?I knew we?d really have to wrestle our tail off to even compete with them,? Cooper acknowledged. ?My kids did, they came out and wrestled really well.? ?I thought we were a little rusty,? Warthan said. ?I have to think about what I saw. As of right now, I?m a little disappointed in some of our performances. We definitely have some things to work on.? With both teams competing in their respective conference tournaments on Saturday, and just one more week left in the regular season, any improvements will have to come quickly. The Olympians can build off some strong performances against a program with hopes of a second straight team state finals appearance. Arguably the match of the night came at 112 pounds, with former state finalist and North senior Francisco Colon battling East sophomore Baron Rieker. Despite a clearly hurting elbow, Colon led Rieker 6-2 with just seconds remaining in the match. Then Rieker scored a 2-point takedown and 3-point near fall to win the match 7-6 and give East an 18-16 lead in the team score. ?If you look back at that, I think if we hit that a second earlier we get a fall out of that,? Cooper said. ?(The final score then is) still only 33-35, but it was a big match. ?That?s someone who has beat Baron and beat Zach (Rieker) several times. It was good to come out there and get a big win. ?I?m not surprised at all. Those guys worked so hard, all my guys worked so hard. They don?t even shock me any more when they?re beating good wrestlers like that.? Warthan said that match hurt. ?You?ve got to credit (Rieker) for having the never-say-die attitude there,? Warthan said. ?We kind of lost it ourselves, I kind of feel like. We stopped attacking, felt sorry for ourselves, and we don?t know how his elbow feels so we?ll look at that.? East?s Zach Rieker followed his brother?s final-second win with a 12-4 victory over Caleb Albertson at 119 pounds to put the O?s ahead 22-16. North?s Caden McGaha won 5-0 over Jake Carlile at 125 to cut the score to 22-19, then Keenan Winters? pin of Zane Clark at 130 put North back ahead, 25-22. Carson Fleetwood put East back on top, 26-25, with a 10-1 win over Mike Hughes at 135, but Jacob Milenbaugh gave the lead back to North with a pin of Xavier Yheulon at 140. North?s Marcus Wadell clinched the victory with a 10-1 win over Caleb Ogle at 145 pounds in the next-to-last match. ?They did a great job,? Warthan said of the O?s. ?On paper, I don?t think it should have been that close. So we?d like to have a few of those matches back. ?But that does nothing but motivate our guys, and we?ll be a little more ready the next time we see them (in the sectional.)? Warthan pointed out the Bull Dogs? tough schedule and how it may have affected his team?s focus. ?Our schedule?s been pretty tough here recently. That worried me a little bit as far as being emotionally prepared and physically prepared coming off some hard matches, not having a lot of time to rest,? he said. ?We have (Conference Indiana) on Saturday (at Bloomington South), then (New Palestine) on Tuesday, and I was telling the guys, ?You can make an argument out of East, conference and New Pal, which one of those is the toughest?? East because of the rivalry and sectional, conference because it?s your conference, and New Pal is probably, if we have any shot of going back to team state, that?s who we?d have to go through. So three tough ones in a row here.? Meanwhile, Cooper thinks his team?s close brush with victory can pay off on Saturday in the Hoosier Hills Conference Meet at Jeffersonville. ?If our guys come out and wrestle well ? we have the potential to win it. I just hope these guys realize they have potential to be there if they all show up and wrestle,? Cooper said.
  2. 3 quads triple the woes for O?s foes BY BRIAN BENNETT bbennett@therepublic.com There?s familiarity at the lower weight classes on Columbus East?s wrestling team. The common bond is the last name Rieker and the common result is a win for the Olympians. Baron (112), Steven (103) and Zach (119) are brothers who have combined for 63 wins entering Wednesday night?s match against Columbus North. ?Their entire family is very dedicated,? said Columbus East coach Chris Cooper, noting that the fourth of the quadruplets, sister Katarina, is a manger. ?They are at all the things we do and help out all the time. ?That?s one of the reasons they?ve gotten so good. They are around it.? Baron and Steven agreed that things can get heated for the sophomores, who are often paired against each other in workouts. ?We can get mad in practice, but we have to get over whatever was going on,? Steven said. Those feisty moments rarely spill over to life at home, but beating one another on the mat is important, according to Baron. ?It can be fun, but sometimes we do fight at practice because none of us wants to lose,? he said. ?It goes both ways.? Still learning Cooper said the three brothers are continuing to get better as they grow into their bodies. Two years ago, they were only around 80 pounds. ?They?ve had to almost gain a fourth of their body weight just to compete,? Cooper said. ?I really anticipate over the next couple of years seeing a huge improvement in those guys. ?You?ll start to see all that time they?ve put in show up on the mat.? And Baron and Zach said that time includes coaching each other. ?If (one) is doing something wrong, I?ll tell him,? Zach said. ?It?s kind of fun.? And that fun has meant success that carries over to those wrestlers that may not share the last name Rieker, but do share the name Olympians. ?It pumps the whole team up if we can get like three pins in a row,? Zach said. Rieker file WHO: Baron, Katarina (manager), Steven and Zach Rieker. WHAT: The sophomore quadruplets are dedicated to Columbus East wrestling. RECORDS: Stephen (103) 23-5; Baron (112) 22-7; Zach (119) 18-11. THEY SAID IT: ?The good part about being brothers is that we can learn off of each other and build off each other? ? Baron Rieker. UP NEXT: The Riekers and the rest of the Olympians host city rival Columbus North at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

  4. Wrestling now ahead. I've voted 2 times, so it looks like we can vote as often as we like.
  5. This tournament has historically had the best wrestlers win. I d0n't think a few pounds makes much of a difference. If you are a better wrestler then you are still going to beat the other guy regardless if he weighs a few pounds more than you.
  6. We've seen them twice this year. Their 145 Chapman is pretty good but other than that, they don't have much.
  7. 7-4....You can find the resuls at Adams Central Invitational on the results page of the forum.
  8. I sent a nasty e-mail to our local paper today about how poor the coverage of wrestling was and the sports editor sent me a reply that a reporter would be at our practice tonight to due an article on our upcoming dual with croos-town rival Columbus North. Maybe I should send nasty e-mails more often. LOL
  9. I have all of that information for Columbus East also. I'm sure most coaches have access to that information, however the difficulty is getting every team to report the information.
  10. The Republic in Columbus is terrible. I submit information to them after every meet which usually is just a list of results. They don't even print all of the information I send them. We have the anual dual between Columbus East and Columbus North this Wednesday. We'll see if the coverage will be more than just small section in the results page or if they give an article.
  11. Are there any detailed individual results anywhere?
  12. But it is also the reason why people don't want Indiana to have class sports. I honestly respect your stance, you want the state tournament to find out who the best is regardless of outside factors. I say those outside factors are enough to make the change to classes. 40 states have decided to do it and Indiana does it already for other sports. Are any of the other individual sports in Indiana seperated by classes? I don't understand the need to have an individual sport classed, but still agree that the team portion could be classed to be more fair for the smaller schools. No other individual sports are classed. Logistically however, it might be hard to run a classed team tournament and unclassed individual. I agree that it would be difficult logistacally and that is probably why there hasn't been any movement to to a class system for sports that are considered to be individual sports.

  14. That proves his point....according to many single class supporters each school should have an equal chance of getting state qualifiers regardless of enrollment. In the past 11 years according to your data the largest 7 schools have 10 times the chance of producing a state qualifier. I don't agree with this. I think each student should have an equal chance to be a state qualifier regardless of enrollment.
  15. I think the class system works fine for the team sports and would also be good for the wrestling team tournament. However, I am opposed to a class system for the individual tournament. It might be for selfish reasons, but I like it that there is only 1 individual state champion per weight class.
  16. Seeding meeting is tomorrow night. It might be easier to make some accurate predictions after we can see what weight class everyone is going to wrestle.

  18. I don't think it's ever too late as long as they meet the school's requirements for participation in practices before they compete. I don't think we should ever turn kids away when they are ready to join our great sport. Hopefully those newcomers will fall in love with wrestling as much as we have.
  19. WOW!!! I think you may want to rethink that bold prediction.
  20. we mandate headgear wear in practice for all live drilling and wrestling The middle school coach mandates headgear at practice but we don't at high school. Luckily, we haven't had anyone with cauliflower ear yet this year.
