  1. I'm gonna go ahead and predict 7... Beck, Tsirtsis, Porras, Roach, McMurray, Cleveland, and Travis
  2. Thank you for all of the help, this topic is very important to me as I will be doing one final update to the rankings with late-coming results and sectional weight changes.. A few that I have noticed besides those already mentioned that I have made changes in the rankings accordingly on already include: Josh Williams of Warren Central from 140 down to 135, Darryn Scott of Marion from 215 down to 189, Logun Taylor of Western from 145 down to 140, and Charlie McGinley of Indianapolis Arsenal Tech from 119 to 125.
  3. KarlHungus and I were in attendance at this year's Al Smith seeding meeting and we both got a good laugh out of all of the excuses for why kids lost.. "He was sick.", "He was winning and got caught.", "He wasn't in shape yet because of football." "He's gotten a lot better since then." But from that day, one line stands out above all the rest.. There was an argument between 2 coaches for the 8th and final seed at one of the weight classes. They had no common opponents, no head to head results, similar records, it was a complete toss-up over who should get this final seed. So Darrick Snyder asks, "okay well is there anything else notable about either kid, how far did they go in the state tournament last year, etc.?" One coach says well my kid went to Regionals last year. The other coach quickly says, my kid was round to go last year... Immediately Snyder says, "well your kid was in the ticket round at semi-state, the other kids been to regionals, we're gonna have to give it to your guy." The coach of the "round to go" wrestler, looking confused, started to backpedal and say, "oh my kid's never been to semi-state, I meant he was round to go to place at the Al Smith last year." I could sense Snyder holding back laughter and it was all that KarlHungus and myself could do to hold it in. O the things coaches will say to get their wrestlers an advantage...
  4. I, for one, would be ecstatic about the Portage Team Regional being broadcasted live! The teams will probably be Portage vs. Munster in one semi-final, and Crown Point vs. Merrillville in the other semi-final. It should be a great night of wrestling that I otherwise would have had to miss if not for broadcastsport.net!
  5. the top 20 end of regular season edition of the rankings are posted.. if there are enough missing notable results or any weight changes after the sectional seeding meetings they will be updated once more, but as it stands, this is where we're at going into sectionals. good luck to all competing and i'm looking forward to the chat at 8 pm eastern wednesday nite.
  6. I just looked up the final rankings from the end of the regular season last year.. Here is where the state champions were ranked: 103- Cody Phillips #2 112- Anthony Hawkins #1 119- Camden Eppert #2 125- Jason Tsirtsis #2 130- Frankie Porras #2 135- Taylor March #3 140- Steven Sandefer #1 145- Daniel Young #2 152- Sean McMurray #1 160- Briar Runyan #1 171- MIchael Duckworth #1 189- Marcus Shrewsbury #1 215- Billy Baker #1 285- Adam Chalfant #1 Last year was the first year that I took over the rankings and I did not get the job until mid-December, so technically this is my first full season as RankingsGuy. Last year there was one unranked finalist, Dustin Kief of Franklin Community at 103, and one unranked semi-state champion, Adam Howland of Brownsburg at 215.
  7. i'm working on them currently. lots of results and since this will be the final posting, i'm really wanting to make sure that i'm happy with how everything looks. also, since this is the last ranking of the season, it will be a top 20. it can probably be expected to be completed by tomorrow morning, but no promises.
  8. coppinger over orzechowitz
  9. how about not to wrestle on friday at conseco?
  10. Graff didn't look so "dominant" at the National Duals getting beat down by Hochstrasser of Boise State and Grey of Cornell.
  11. Merlyn, you are correct.. the draw as posted prior is incorrect.. munster and portage will square off in match 1, merrillville and crown point in match 2, and the winners will battle for the team regional title.
  12. are you kidding? we just named 10+ schools in 'da region' with a state champ in recent memory (merrillville, hobart, highland, munster, griffith, lake central, east chicago central, hanover central, portage, valparaiso, crown point, michigan city, calumet, lowell) and if we included runners-up there'd be even more.. (chesterton, new prairie, john glenn, hammond high, plus several from all of the schools that we just mentioned that had champs). hardly sounds like a case of one school making da region tough.. this year alone merrillville should get a title w/ travis, hobart should get a title w/ porras, portage should get a title w/ mcmurray, crown point should get titles w/ tsirtsis and roach, and lowell will contend for a title w/ cleveland, munster will contend for one w/ surma, lake central will contend for one w/ ayersman, calumet will contend for one w/ clark... the list goes on my friend and the numbers don't lie
  13. i by no means am saying that blake rueger will not qualify for state or even that he won't place at state at 135.. the aim of the rankings is not to capture the 16 state qualifiers, the aim of the rankings is to capture the 16 BEST kids regardless of geography. i feel that the 16 ranked kids at 135 would all beat blake rueger. the way the geography works out, some of these ranked kids will be left home at semi-state by the draws and the lack of wrestle-backs, and rueger very likely will be a state qualifier and possibly a state medalist, although it would be surprising to me if he beat someone ranked in the top 16 on his way through the tournament series..
  14. it is amazing what the Merrillville Semi-State is doing with virtually no production whatsoever from the Logansport Regional outside of Delphi... could you imagine how badly that the Merrillville Semi-State would wreck the State Finals every year if the Logansport Regional was turning out the quality of wrestlers that Calumet, LaPorte, and Rochester are?
  15. If we were to go back a few more years say from 2000 forward.. the Calumet Regional may be the toughest due to all of the Griffith State Champs.. Alex Tsirtsis 4x, Angel Escobedo 4x, Andrae Hernandez 2x, Jose Escobedo, Merrillville State Champs.. Dexter Larimore and Wesley English, Lake Central State Champs.. Mike Escobedo 2x and Michael Engberg-Bartley, East Chicago Central State Champ.. Hector Mendez, Highland State Champ..Fernando Martinez, AND, we have to go back to 2000 to find the last time that the Calumet Regional did not have a State Champion AND, maybe even more impressive is that the Calumet Regional has to go back to 1990 to find the last time that they did not have a kid in the State Championship match!
  16. I thought it would be interesting to see how each regional has fared at the state's toughest semi-state, Merrillville, over the last 4 years.. here is the breakdown (for those of you unfamiliar with the geographic distribution, I will include those that were State Champs and Runners-Up from each Regional) *Note that the Calumet and LaPorte regionals combined is the area often referred to as "Da Region": 2009: Calumet- 12 State Qualifiers, 8 of those were Medalists 2008: Calumet- 14 State Qualifiers, 9 of those were Medalists 2007: Calumet- 14 State Qualifiers, 8 of those were Medalists 2006: Calumet- 14 State Qualifiers, 7 of those were Medalists 2006-2009 Calumet SQ: 54 2006-2009 Calumet Medalists: 32 2006-2009 Calumet Friday Night at State Winning Percentage: 59.26% State Champs from Calumet from 2006-2009: 8 (Frankie Porras-Hobart, Brennan Cosgrove-Hobart, Eric Galka-Hobart, Eric McGill-Munster 2x, Jamal Lawrence-Merrillville, Javier Salas-Merrillville, Dexter Larimore-Merrillville) Runners-Up from Calumet from 2006-2009: 4 (Frankie Porras-Hobart, Eric Galka-Hobart, Brennan Cosgrove-Hobart 2x) 2009: LaPorte- 15 State Qualifiers, 13 of those were Medalists 2008: LaPorte- 15 State Qualifiers, 10 of those were Medalists 2007: LaPorte- 17 State Qualifiers, 12 of those were Medalists 2006: LaPorte- 14 State Qualifiers, 9 of those were Medalists 2006-2009 LaPorte SQ: 61 2006-2009 LaPorte Medalists: 44 2006-2009 LaPorte Friday Night at State Winning Percentage: 72.13% State Champs from LaPorte from 2006-2009: 10 (Anthony Hawkins-Crown Point, Jason Tsirtsis-Crown Point, Sean McMurray- Portage 2x, Marcus Shrewsbury-Crown Point, Tom Churchard- Valparaiso, Andrew Howe-Hanover Central 3x, Chad Biddle-Portage) Runners-Up from LaPorte from 2006-2009: 8 (Anthony Quiroz-Chesterton, Eric Roach-Crown Point, Marcus Shrewsbury-Crown Point, Tom Churchard-Valparaiso, Andy St. Germain-Chesterton, Phillip Oudhuis-New Prairie, Derek Traversa-John Glenn, Adam Walters-Portage) 2009: Logansport- 12 State Qualifiers, 4 of those were Medalists 2008: Logansport- 8 State Qualifiers, 2 of those were Medalists 2007: Logansport- 6 State Qualifiers, 1 of those were a Medalist 2006: Logansport- 8 State Qualifiers, 3 of those were Medalists 2006-2009 Logansport SQ: 34 2006-2009 Logansport Medalists: 10 2006-2009 Logansport Friday Night at State Winning Percentage: 29.41% State Champs from Logansport from 2006-2009: 0 Runners-Up from Logansport from 2006-2009: 1 (Travis Dale-McCutcheon) 2009: Rochester- 17 State Qualifiers, 10 of those were Medalists 2008: Rochester- 19 State Qualifiers, 14 of those were Medalists 2007: Rochester- 19 State Qualifiers, 13 of those were Medalists 2006: Rochester- 20 State Qualifiers, 13 of those were Medalists 2006-2009 Rochester SQ: 75 2006-2009 Rochester Medalists: 50 2006-2009 Rochester Friday Night at State Winning Percentage: 66.67% State Champs from Rochester from 2006-2009: 10 (Steve Sandefer-Mishawaka 2x, Daniel Young-Culver Academies, Josh Harper-Mishawaka 3x, Ian Hinton-Mishawaka 2x, George Malone-South Bend Riley, Pat Day-Mishawaka) Runners-Up from Rochester from 2006-2009: 2 (Christian Lentz-Mishawaka, Cory Fornal-Rochester) On average.. Rochester- 18.75 Qualifers per year, 12.5 Medalists per year, .5 Runners-Up per year, 2.5 State Champs per year LaPorte- 15.25 Qualifiers per year, 11 Medalists per year, 2 Runners-Up per year, 2.5 State Champs per year Calumet- 13.5 Qualifiers per year, 8 Medalists per year, 1 Runner-Up per year, 2 State Champs per year Logansport- 8.5 Qualifiers per year, 2.5 Medalists per year, .25 Runners-Up per year, 0 State Champs per year As is well documented, Logansport is the weakest, though they have been getting more qualifiers with the emergence of Delphi as a state power, however the State Champs, Runners-Up, and Medalists are pretty much all coming from Calumet, LaPorte, and Rochester.
  17. thanks for the kind words tkdwn2.. for everyone who complains about the geographic distribution, check out the # of state champions and guys in the finals data divided by semi-state over the last 4 years which i posted on page 2 of the state champion predictions thread..
  18. So, to conclude.. over the last 4 years if we average everything out: Merrillville- 7 Champs per year, 10.75 in the Finals per year Evansville- 3 Champs per year, 6.25 in the Finals per year New Castle- 2.5 Champs per year, 6.5 in the Finals per year Fort Wayne- 1.5 Champs per year, 4.25 in the Finals per year However, the trends shows that Evansville is slipping to the worst semi-state and Fort Wayne moving up to the 3rd best semi-state with Merrillville taking home half of the state champions every year and New Castle trending up to a consistent 2nd best every year..
  19. 2009: Evansville- 1 Champ, 4 in the Finals 2008: Evansville- 2 Champs, 4 in the Finals 2007: Evansville- 5 Champs, 7 in the Finals 2006: Evansville- 4 Champs, 10 in the Finals
  20. 2009: Fort Wayne- 3 Champs, 5 in the Finals 2008: Fort Wayne- 2 Champs, 5 in the Finals 2007: Fort Wayne- 0 Champs, 3 in the Finals 2006: Fort Wayne- 1 Champ, 4 in the Finals
  21. 2009: New Castle- 3 Champs, 10 in the Finals 2008: New Castle- 4 Champs, 8 in the Finals 2007: New Castle- 2 Champs, 6 in the Finals 2006: New Castle- 1 Champ, 2 in the Finals
  22. A little data to keep in mind over the last 4 years.. 2009: Merrillville- 7 Champs, 9 in the Finals 2008: Merrillville- 6 Champs, 10 in the Finals 2007: Merrillville- 7 Champs, 12 in the Finals 2006: Merrillville- 8 Champs, 12 in the Finals These numbers have been pretty consistent, so when one makes their state champions predictions this season, its a safe bet to think that these numbers will hold up again...
  23. Viking174, not to be a jerk or anything, BUT... can you name the last time the Fort Wayne semi-state won 5 weight classes, or even matched the Merrillville semi-state for state champs? Not gonna happpen..
