Gunsett getting 4th was not by virtue of the draw. If there was ever an example of "getting caught" that one was it. He should have had 3rd. Yes, it was a 4th but it wasn't because of his great draw. One could argue with a different draw he could have placed 1st or 2nd.

JC Regional had 6 champs compared to Carroll's 3. I suppose that was due to the draw too?

Moving the number to seven and even five is still an all in event, as all schools have the opportunity to work the halls to move from three kids to seven kids. I don't think the IHSWCA is saying any particular school is not eligible, but to be eligible you have to have this many wrestlers. Kinda like saying you have to have this many points to eligible to be considered as an wild card to the team state event as all schools have the opportunity to score enough points, just has the have the opportunity to works the halls.

If the point is to shoot for fairness, change the rule regarding the number of team members to at least seven. As we all know is 7 x 6 = 42 which the most a team could muster out of dual is a tie, which would be highly unlikely. It's not too late to rearrange the classes based on the change. It is IHSWCA not the IHSAA, so the rules can be changed.

I disagree I don't think It was favoritism but rather just a poor official... As far as I could tell he was the only bad official there Saturday making a lot of poor calls in various matches. Props to the rest of the officials on Saturday who did a quality job. Hate to see an official effect the outcome of a match.

I completey agree with rhayes suggestions.

One other very important point that I see every day -- we are as much the problem as the solution.  It is a double-edged sword of telling kids to be at a high level, they need to do offseason work, which precludes them from participating in other sports.  Specialization.

The football players who's offseason is "lifting with the guys".  The wrestler who spends all spring and summer going to freestyle tournaments, camps, and academy (CIA, RWA, Pride, etc) training during the week.  The runner who is encouraged to log 25+ miles a week in the offseason.  Maybe that's ok for the truly elite guys, but maybe the mid-level kids need to be told to spread out their talents and sacrifice the top-end performance for a more well rounded (and possibly fun) high school experience.

If we really want to promote higher numbers, there needs to be a grass roots effort by parents and coaches to encourage more multiple-sport athletes. What reward-based system can be put in place to highlight and encourage kids to get into multiple sports (especially those like wrestling/track/football where there aren't roster limitations)?

Can a school have a special "club" or some other notoriety to publicize athletes who do multiple sports?  How else can we accomplish this?  It would help at both small and large schools

I was just pointing out its possible that since Dulaney has left the program it could be the reason of the defections, which by IHSAA rules is not allowed. I am in agreement that if you openly accepted transfer in, they most certainly should not prohibit the transfers. I also noticed a previous post that Yorktown stated there are always two sides to the story in which a subsequent post asked Yorktown to share their position, which as yet to happen. I too would like to see the reasoning for blocking the transfers.
