  2. My favorite quote from this past weekend came from Jacob Gray who said "Playing multiple sports makes me a better athlete, it makes me more versatile". Both of our state qualifiers this year are 3 sport athletes, one has a State Championship football ring, our 106 SQ is our JV quarterback, and both of them play baseball in the spring. I think one thing that has hurt wrestling is the idea of specialization, and it has hurt us in the past with kids who have become football players in the fall and then told us they were not going to wrestle because they needed to lift all winter for football. I think working with your school's football coach, along with other fall and spring sports can really pay dividends for your participation numbers. Classing the state tournament is not going to convince those winter football players at the small school level to come out for wrestling.
  3. http://illinoismatmen.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61664 Go check out what Illinois has to say about classed wrestling. It will water down our state tournament
  4. If the purpose of classing the state tournament is to get more exposure, more state qualifiers, etc., would anyone rather expand the state finals to 32 wrestlers per weight class, rather than classing it. Still 1 state champ, more kids to call themselves state qualifiers.
  5. As to why they do it, I can't give you that reason. I think it has hurt other sports' State Tournament though. One of the posts above shows you how the attendance to the basketball state tournament was cut in half when they went to a classed tournament. Is that what we want?
  6. You're comparing apples and oranges. It's illogical to think that Linton-Stockton playing against Carmel in football is the same as Black wrestling against Mattingly at 106. In both examples, the schools are similar sizes. The reason the class system was put into effect was for football and it was to protect kids from getting hurt. 1a programs cannot physically compete with the 6a programs because of size, speed and numbers. That's not to say their aren't 1a athletes who can't compete at that level, but 1a programs cannot compete with Carmel, Penn, Warren, etc. Using the football comparison doesn't make sense when we have several small school athletes who can compete with other wrestlers at the bigger schools.
  7. Or explain how Yorktown finishes 4th as a team, Prairie Heights has 40+ kids on their team, and Shenandoah has 3 State placers? It's all about the organization within your program, the support from parents in your program, and the quality of coaching at your school. I would take 0-1 State Qualifiers a year at a small school rather than 5-6 every year in a watered down State Finals. We have one of the best State Tournaments of any sport in the State, classing it will not get more numbers in the rural, small schools, it will just water it down.
  8. I don't see anywhere in that post where it says Jones would win it? In fact he actually says that he didn't think Logan would have any champs, so actually he was spot on.
  9. Rensselaer 2, first time in school history to have multiple qualifiers in a single season, and the first underclassman to qualify
  10. Armstrong (Winamac) over Haskins (Portage) by Fall
  11. at Logansport 120 #9 Jon Anderson (Lafayette Jeff) vs #11 Donovan Johnson (Logansport) or Returning SQ Trey McCartney (Lafayette Harrison) 160 #13 Myles Krintz (Lafayette Harrison) vs Mikey Kidwell (West Lafayette) - Kidwell was up 3-1 in the 3rd Period on Krintz at the Sectional before being put to his back.

  16. Congrats to these two wrestlers. We have only had 7 wrestlers in our programs history reach 100 wins. It's a big milestone that the average wrestler never reaches.
