It is a small sample size if you only look at wins/losses, you're correct. But we can start to identify some level of confidence in the "truth" of the results by aggregating the individual scores of the 25 matches (excluding the one match involving the 4-seed that advanced by default and did not fit the profile of a typical #4 advancer).
All told, the 12 victories of the #4's included 5 pins, a major, and 6 decisions. The losses involved 2 pins and 2 majors. If we aggregate these, assigning a value of +10 match points to pins and actual score differentials to the rest, the #4's outscored their 25 opponents by 14 points...an average of a little more than half a point per match for the entire 25.
In fact, though, it's a little more future-predictive in the context of individual ratings for wrestlers of this level to cap match point differentials at 7 (+7 for pins/majors/techs). This still gives us an average difference of +0.3 points for the 25 matches--in favor of the #4's. If we get these aggregated score results for 25 matches, we can start to feel some level of comfort in the assumption that future matches of this type (quarterfinals involving #4 seeds) will go the way of the #4 about half the time. To put it another way, the line for these matches would be set at "pick 'em" or -0.5 in favor of the #4s that just beat a #1.
I love the analysis. And Newbie, not a bad question either for a westsider.

Would you want your 132 to go down to 126 at team state just to knock off another wrestler? MD was there to win. Not entertain us.

Castle will be strong the next several years.

Lee. Gave up his first points of the season in quarterfinals...and looked like he could spit nails after. No one else ever looked close to scoring, never mind winning.
Crazy. I looked over and I thought he had lost. No, he had just given up his only points for the SEASON. Nuts.
-
Wrong. Lee was awarded a rev/td plus three backs, making it 7-4. He switched off to a half for the fall.
Actually, was it a hook and a half? lol
The Cash/Lee call was a fall. Live with it. Yes, it was a touch pin. But Lee should never put himself in the position to allow the call.
Cash hung in there and capitalized on Lees poor position. All credit to him. He is deservedly among the top in the nation.
We are still in the first chapter of the Joe Lee's wrestling story. And the way he handled Cash/James, it should be a hell of a story. He is a college wrestler right now.
And let's not forget James. My heart goes out to this young man. Flonational champ. Indiana wrestling tournament is unforgiving He has been an inspiration to all Indiana wrestlers. I predict his best days are ahead.
So, in my book, they are all champs.

7-4 Lee at time of fall.
-
Dont forget Ellis. He is a greco stud.
Many forget that Nick Lee was the Pan Am champ in freesyle and GRECO. Lee can throw with the best of them.

Every route to a state championship is tough.

Different Joe Lee than even 1 month ago. He was good at SIAC, great at Regionals. Semi-state: OMG.
But then again, at state they everyone is beatable.

I think the point of the thread is that MD doesn't recruit. Ok. So what? We know.

Castle deserves a look. Ask the EMD folks.

132 I couldn't decide if Bethel would upset B. Lee or not so I won't even guess but the winner of that match gets 2nd.
These look very accurate. And yes, Bethel is capable of making it to the finals.

Ford Center is a wonderful place to watch wrestling. If you have not been to Evansville SS, you are in for a treat.

Just saw some film on line of the match. GS wrestler looked like he was boxing. Not wrestling. While it was "open handed", it was clearly overboard with palm facing down. The CourierPress called it correctly: "Jabs". Surprised the MD wrestler kept his composure. VERY surprised the MD coaches kept theirs.
Prediction: Ramsey makes it to the finals.

Crazy good weight class.
-
No reason IU shouldn't be competitive at every weight.
-
Howe is a complete beast. Glad to call him a Hoosier.
-
If Ferguson wrestles, he will make 120/126 very interesting

I think Micic is the only person to score on Lee in IHSAA. Still early for him. 3 years is a lot of time to make a mistake and get stuck. Let alone get scored on.
Indiana's Big Ten team competition
in College and International Wrestling
Posted
Indiana University wrestling is completely embarrassing. The athletic director must not care about wrestling or even competing. While a couple IU wrestlers are competitive, the team is horrible. Bottom of the Big10 and nobody seems to care.
