  2. Having coached these boys the past couple years may make me biased, but I believe that Avione Johnson (145-152) and John Stewart (170) both Juniors at TC Howe may make a big impact in the state tournament this year (more so for Johnson). At my new school, I believe Christian Warren (145-152), a Sophomore will hit Semi-State at least after finishing 5th in the sectional, he looks ready to make a big step forward after spending a ton of time in the room this off-season.
  3. There are two openings I know of: Madison Grant in Fairmount, IN, halfway between Indianapolis and Ft. Wayne needs a new coach. Contact ryan.plovick@mgargylls.com for info on that one. Also, TC Howe in Indianapolis is searching for a new head coach there. There are 6 returning starters from that team (all were sophomores this year) and all had records at or over .500 on the season). There are also several untapped talents that are just now getting into the sport but are freak athletes that should be great wrestlers under the right coaching. For more information, contact Damon Watts at dwatts@tchowehighschool.org
  4. Our Numbers are actually the same as last year, however, IPS has significantly improved on what places we're winning this year. Here's the breakdown for this year: Broad Ripple: 4 (285 Champion, 126 Runner up, 113 3rd place, and 145 4th place) Tech: 3 (170 Champion, 152 Runner up, 220 3rd place) TC Howe: 3 (138 Champion, 145 3rd place, 220 4th place) Washington: 2 (170 3rd place, 195 4th place) Northwest: 2 (195 Runner up, 152 4th place) Crispus Attucks: 2 (120 Runner up (State qualifier last year), 182 4th Place) Manual: 1 (160 3rd place) Overall:17 (3 Champions, 4 Runner ups, 5 3rd Places, 5 4th places) Compared to last year: 17 ( 0 Champions, 6 Runner ups, 4 3rds, 7 4ths) Last year only Johnson, Baker, and Clay advanced to Semi-State. This year, all three should repeat. We should at least add 2 more to the mix this year. So, yeah, it's been a good year and I only see it getting better.
  5. Johnson is listed at 170 for sectionals for our seeding meeting
  6. Great night of wrestling Results up in bracket section and on trackwrestling Tech took the team championship There are a few kids in this conference that can make some noise next weekend
  7. Just a couple corrections on my team's notables. (TC Howe) We have a 106 who overslept for city but he's undefeated at 106, (9-2 overall losing only to 2 solid 113s) this season: Demarkis Stewart- 11th grade. At 138, not only is Hendon city champ, but he holds a record of 19-2 and has only lost to Westfield (#5 in Semi State Rankings) in a 6-3 decision (first match of the season) and got caught in a match he was up 10-3 against The Franklin Central 138 (#7 in Semi-State) At 145, Johnson is only a Sophomore. 16-6, won 8 straight matches now. (with 4 of 6 losses coming at 152 during first week of season) Our 160 was just cleared, undefeated Senior (7-0) Kyle White. Our Varsity 220 was just cleared after a hamstring injury, not Peter Johnson, but Mark Eubank (4-0 this season 19-4 last year and went undefeated at this tourney) Finally, our Varsity 285 was ruled out due to academics so he will not be participating. I'm looking forward to a great day of wrestling. Should be some great matches.
  8. Blue River joined this year so there are now 2 pools. Pool A: Alexandria, Tri, Blue River, TC Howe Pool B: Centerville, Northeastern, Greensburg, Daleville If I'm not mistaken (someone correct me if you know better) Teams will wrestle everyone in their pool and then the team that got the same place as them in the other pool for placement. (For example, the winners of the two pools will face each other in the 5th round, with the second place teams facing each other, and so on) It's usually a nice tournament to attend with some quality wrestling. Looking forward to it!
  9. After attending the North Central Super 6 last weekend, I was very impressed by Franklin Central, particularly their 138 pounder, Tanner Smith. No idea what his overall record is but I think he certainly can compete in the Semi-State if he were to wrestle the way he did this past weekend.

  11. Interesting Topic. I actually studied Neuroscience at Purdue alongside the faculty who did the research on this topic before getting into education and coaching. It is true that non-concussive hits can add up and cause differences in brain function at least in terms of how much glucose is burnt in certain areas of the hind, fore and midbrains, however there is no long term evidence of negative cognitive performance (every day thinking ability) from the participants at this point. I'd be interested to see a study done on the before and after effects on simple brain performance (e.g. memory tasks, simple math processes, etc;) before I'd make the sweeping statement that my child will never play football. I also see no percentages of subjects that had changes in brain function, just that 6 of them had actual concussions and all 6 suffered from changes. I'd like to see the numbers. I do think it's just a matter of informed risk and I believe all the general is wanting everyone to see is that they are not truly informed currently. Just like before you can have a participant participate in a research study, they have to be informed of any risk, so should athletes because injury, brain damage, and other horrible travesties can occur. Currently, most people have very little knowledge about the risk of brain damage from football: it's higher than you think and good form tackling will NOT cure everything. There's always a "fun child" that's going to hit in the head no matter what and you can't help who your kids are playing against and some jarring hits that cause whip lash or kids to be shoved forcefully into the ground or another player can cause brain dysfunction over a long course of time. There really just needs to be more research done on the subject before I could know the actual dangers to children before college as the hits are not as forceful before everyone has a college football body and skill. That being said, if you know the risks and your child knows the risks and wants to play anyways, far be it from me to try to stop you. It's an incredibly fun sport if you aren't afraid of physical contact and I'd never discourage anyone from playing it, but also wouldn't poke fun at someone concerned about the potential health hazards. They do exist. Just my 2 cents! Oh, and football and wrestling should be partners and working together to develop well balanced athletes. There are tons of benefits to doing both. The skills are highly transferable and at the school I work at, we've already seen benefits of increased wrestling practice for the football players and higher participation this summer.
  12. Indianapolis Howe has a paid assistant opening. It's a growing program with 30+ wrestlers, many of whom have little experience. If you're interested email me at nbrobst@tchowehighschool.org.
  13. Just to plug for my conference tourney: This is a Friday night tournament and if you're in the Indy area and want to see some good wrestling on a Friday instead of waiting a day, this is a great tournament. Although the weight classes won't be really deep, the top of each of them is solid and will provide some great wrestling. It'd be great to see a good crowd Friday night.
  14. Howe goes 2-3 on the day. Howe 48, Daleville 12 Howe 9, Alexandria 66 Howe 36, Northeastern 30 Howe 30, Tri 36 Howe 15, Centerville 63 Individual Results: 120: Scalf 2-3 (8-7 overall) 126: Johnson 1-2 (12-8 overall) 138: Medaris 1-4 (6-17 overall) 145: Hendon 1-2 (11-3 overall) 170: Easley 3-2 (9-15 overall) 182: Williams 3-2 (8-4 overall) 195: Eubank 5-0 Individual Champ (13-2 overall) 220: S. Wright 4-1 (15-10 overall) 285: M. Wright 4-1 (21-8 overall)
