    152, a good example...
    # 2 seeded Washington kid, no longer at 152...placed in 160 bracket...can't move a seeded wrestler

I was looking at the Southport sectional brackets and didn't see Washington listed in either weight class?

  2. The only reason I can see this happening, The wrestler did not qualify for the 152 weight class and had to move up to 160. We had a situation come up at our seed meeting similar. A team had a 120 who weighed in too low that week so it wasn't a qualifying weigh in. The wrestler was injured and the rest of his weigh ins were above 120. The wrestler couldn't go 120, but a forfeit was entered at 126 so the wrestler wasn't allowed to go there either. To me, the kid should be allowed to wrestle at 126. I do understand not wanting to open that can of worms, but I would rather open it and let the kid wrestle than make him sit on the sideline.

maybe the IHSAA needs to look at a qualifying weigh ins and at least one scratch qualifying weigh in the wrestler has to compete at that weight class in order to be eligible for that weight at sectional.  Potentially a wrestler could wrestle at a weight and have never competed at that actual weight class.  They get two pounds starting in Jan.  So they find a JV meet to weigh in to make scratch in December, get the two pounds, have 5 other qualified weigh ins and never compete at that scratch weight.  Thus creating a debacle in the seed meeting.

Wrestlers do have to have a to make a scratch weight at the weight class they compete in for the sectional. They may not compete in that weight class on the day they make it, but that isn't the rule. Getting off topic just a bit, but the weight rule is something that needs to be looked at IMO. I have two thoughts. First, give the two pounds the first half of the season, and then remove it after Christmas. The IHSAA wants kids to be safe with their weight. This would allow wrestlers time to work down to their desired weight class and be safe while doing so. By Christmas time, wrestlers should have their weight management under control. My second thought is instead of saying a wrestler's minimum weight is 113, and if he weights 112.9 it doesn't count, just make it the wrestler has to make weight for the weight class. Then we don't run in to kids trying to drink water to add a few tenths right before weigh in to make sure they are at the correct tenth. Just a few thoughts.

Cody Phillips from Union County had a situation similar to this as well. 103 champ 103 champ 113 3rd 126 4th at S.S. But I believe someone wrestled in his spot at state. Unsure of the reason. Great wrestler all together.

I do agree, I think that jump up from 113 - 126 is an undertaking. Or any jump 2 weight classes really in my mind can impact the effectiveness of different styles of wrestling. Very interested to see how everything plays out at 126.

Cody had hurt his shoulder and defaulted to fourth at semi-state and the coaches and him discussed wrestling at state and chose not to compete with his future, at the time, being in Minnesota.

  5. Also at the EIAC, Otto from SD (106) lost to Tanner Busch of East Central, and then Busch lost in the finals to Andrew Merritt of Franklin County. At heavyweight, Josh Berger of Northeastern has beaten Zach McQueen of Connersville twice this year. McQueen's only two loses.

    5. Coaches should strive to keep open minds when seeding assignments are being decided. The main objective of seeding is to have outstanding wrestlers separated in the brackets so that they will not meet each other until the finals. Seeding shall be based upon the wrestler's proven ability and not upon the desire for unwarranted advantage.

I think this is also important. Coaches need to keep an open mind. Yes we all want our wrestlers to advance the furthest they possibly can, but we also need to be realistic. I think my point can be proven years ago when one of the Keiffer brothers and Brandon Wright were the #2 and #3 seeds because the #1 was the returning sectional champion in that weight class. I don't think you can argue strength of schedule because it is not the kids fault that they wrestle who they wrestle.I'm sure we all know of kids who come in with stellar records and higher seeds and then lose early in the tournament or do not advance. I think that goes back to the coaches keeping an open mind when seeding wrestlers. Also after a seed has been placed, the whole criteria for seeding starts over again.

I bet Ragle will have a loss after this weekend.  He shouldn’t  be the number 1 seed.

I think the forum was about who the undefeated wrestlers are at this point in the season, not whether or not they should or shouldn’t be seeded wherever. Hard to say a kid who is undefeated shouldn’t be the number one seed. Thankfully seeds don’t mean squat, and that’s why we wrestle. Good luck to anyone who gets to compete tomorrow. Be safe.

  8. They had to redraw four weight classes because of forfeits. I believe every weight class had at least one change but many weights had multiple changes so the brackets would be are to have accurate from the beginning. I will be more than happy to post pictures of the brackets tomorrow morning when we get there. I spoke with the Connersville coaches and they are optimistic that this tournament will be on track next year. Fingers crossed.

What happened with the Rushville kid at 160? Why didn't he wrestle?

We had three kids out sick. Hopefully they will be healthy for next weekend.

If a wrestler is 15-12 on a good schedule and has 4 forfeits he cannot be seeded unless he has head to head, common opponent, or is a ticket rounder. Thus if he wrestled a decent schedule, missed some key sectional opponent matches, and has no commons, he's thrown into the hopper and hoping he doesn't draw a top seeded guy in a win or go home match.

The only wrestler who could be seeded above your example is a kid that is 12-12 with no forfeits. I think at that point you are splitting hairs. I have seen weight classes in years past where the weight classes were down and wrestlers with losing records earned seeds. Typically wrestlers who are seeded have records that are much better than .500. I think the bigger issue again is the blind draw of the pigtail match.

  14. 1 minute ago, Y2CJ41 said:

It will affect kids that wrestle tougher schedules and are hovering around .500. It will affect kids that were out due to injuries, sickness, etc. It will affect kids that got down to weight later due to adhering to the weight loss plan.

A wrestler's record will travel with him if he drops a weight class. If wrestler A is 16-8 and 195 and drops to 182, the record still applies. If he doesn't have any forfeits, he will still be 16-8 at 182. If the kids wrestle solid competition all year, it won't matter. I think the bigger issue is drawing the pig tail match blindly, but that is a whole other can of worms.

  15. There are so many other criteria's that will take place before you get to winning percentage. The only weight classes where I see this being an issue are your lighter weights, and if there are only 4-6 kids in the weight class, it isn't going to matter. I wonder if teams use this criteria at the conference meets as well.
