  1. Name me a heavyweight that runs a power half better than any lightweight.
  2. When the middle and light weights are doing granbys... when the light and middle weights are practicing legs... you're proving my point. The light and middle weights have similar and more high level styles compared to the heavyweights.
  3. Of course you could wrestle more open with the smaller guys, as you probably outweigh them by at least 60 or so pounds. And of course strategies vary slightly from weight to weight, but I would say that the general styles of lightweights and middleweights are similar for the most part, regardless of small differences in speed and strength. Not so for the less skilled heavies. My point is, when you are teaching "wrestling skills" (SHOTS, switches, etc.) to a group of inexperienced wrestlers, do you teach them the skills employed by the lower and middle weights, or the skills employed by the heavier weights?
  4. I think that's exactly what that means... he doesn't know 1001 moves so he doesn't have as many skills. And while it's true that a wrestler can be very successful with just a couple of moves executed to perfection, I don't think standing up straight in a collar tie, stalling until you can spin behind your opponent when he shoots and gets caught under your weight, and sloppy throws qualify as high level wrestling skills.
  5. We're on the same side of this issue, I weighed 87 pounds as a freshman and always wrestled in the lighter weights, so I understand how important a pound is for the little guys. I always respected the 103 lb weight class and didn't agree with the increase to 106 (doubt that it had a significant effect on forfeits, which according to some were the biggest travesty wrestling has ever had to endure :) However, I think the fact that there's one fewer weight class between 30 and 45, where there are arguably a greater number of skilled wrestlers than there are in any other weight range, and another class in the heavier weights, where there are far fewer skilled and dedicated wrestlers, is much more detrimental to the sport. Sometimes you have to make some concessions to the 103 haters to get them to even consider your argument. And I think it goes without saying that the overall quality of wrestling at 103/106 is head and shoulders better than the quality of wrestling at 220/285.
  6. I'm not talking about 103, I'm talking about 130-145. Raising 103 by three pounds and 275 by 10 pounds really didnt affect either weight class significantly.
  7. You know that this argument holds no water. The fact is, there used to be four weight classes between 130 and 145 and four weight classes between 171 and 285. Now there are three weight classes between 132 and 145 and five weight classes between 170 and 285. One fewer weight class in the lower-to-middle weights, where the best wrestling happens, and one more weight class in the heavier weights, where... well, there's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said.
  8. In all honesty, it might be a two-team race between East Noble and Carroll IMO.
  9. Y2's patented "I'm only stating facts, this isn't an opinion" defense. What you're doing is picking and choosing "facts" to state in order to make the implication that Penn "deserved" to win the match. For example, by stating the "fact" that Perry wrestled "zero backups," you're making the implication that Penn wrestled "backups" (when in actuality, Penn makes a lot of rotations in their lineup, and your heavyweight hasn't been able to make weight for most of the season, so it's really irrelevant.) So, even though you repeatedly say you're just "stating facts" we all know that what you're really saying is "Penn didn't wrestle their best lineup and Perry did, so their win is less meaningful." Which is an opinion, and an excuse. I'm not exactly sure if you think I'm stupid, or are just a smug d-bag. My opinion is it's the latter.
  10. The amount of excuses Penn fans have made for their team this year, win or lose, is unreal. "We were two overtime points away from winning," "we wrestled a bunch of JV guys," etc., etc. I don't think Coach Harper would put a lineup on the mat that he thought didn't give Penn its best possible chance to win. Seems to me that you guys have a pretty bad inferiority complex, must have something to do with all those years spent playing second fiddle to Mishawaka... You've got a solid team that's having a good season, but I'm sorry to say you're not on Perry's level. Try making fewer excuses and enjoying it more.
  11. 182: David Strzelecki (Homestead) over #3 Brad Busse (Bellmont) 15-6
  12. Every pin is definitely not a "12 point swing." If that were the case, it would mean that your wrestler would have had to avoid the pin and then pin the wrestler that pinned him, which in the large majority of matches that end with a fall would never happen. Most often, giving up a pin is a one or two point swing, as the wrestler that got pinned would do well to only give up a major or a tech. And at the same time, for every bonus point that your team could have avoided giving up, there is another match that could have gone differently in favor of your opponent. Emphasizing not giving up bonus points and making smart decisions throughout a dual is definitely a worthwhile effort for a coach. However, I think the OP was referring to fans who are simply making excuses for their team after a loss.
  13. Great showing by the NHC teams... East Noble and Carroll take first and second by pretty comfortable margins and the NHC comes away with 5 champs in Pepple at 106, Knapp at 113, Lutter at 120, Krumlauf at 132 and Lefever at 170. Gonna be interesting to see who comes out on top between East Noble and Carroll at the conference tournament in three weeks.
  14. 138: #15 @ 132 Baysinger (Yorktown) over #13 Kemper (Evansville Central) 3-2 Triple OT 145: #2 Kelley (Evansville Central) over #14 McCreary (Mooresville) #2 Kelley (Evansville Central) over #3 @ 138 Carroll (Yorktown) 2-0 152: #5 @ 145 Walker (Yorktown) over #14 Martin (Homestead) 11-2 182: Unranked Ben Evans (Fort Wayne Dwenger) over #11 Ludwig (Brownsburg) 2-1
  15. 138: Baysinger over Kemper 3-2 in sudden death triple OT 145: Kelley over Carroll 2-0 Kelley vs. Carroll by far the best match of the day, ton of great scrambles with a reversal in the second winning it for Kelley.
  16. 106: McCormick over Franklin Dec 6-1 113: Brown over Hawkins by first period pin 120: Phillips over Haynes by TF 126: Welch over Anderson MD 17-6 132: Meiring over McIntyre TF 18-2
  17. Finals Matches: 106: McCormick (Yorktown) vs. Franklin (Homestead) 113: Brown (Castle) vs. Hawkins (Mooresville) 120: Phillips (Yorktown) vs. Haynes (Charlestown) 126: Welch (Castle) vs. Anderson (Mooresville) 132: McIntyre (Mooresville) vs. Meiring (Castle) 138: Baysinger (Yorktown) vs. Kemper (Evansville Central) 145: Carroll (Yorktown) vs. Kelley (Evansville Central) 152: Walker (Yorktown) vs. Martin (Homestead) 160: Hiestand (Yorktown) vs. Wilson (Jennings County) 170: Frye (Mooresville) vs. Hiestand (Yorktown) 182: Evans (Fort Wayne Dwenger) vs. Ludwig (Brownsburg) 195: Scott (Mooresville) vs. Miller (Northview) 220: Pace (Evansville Central) vs. Harlan (Brownsburg) 285: Sampson (Northview) vs. Wolka (Seymour) Yorktown leading the team race comfortably.
  18. I didn't give either team any pins, as it's hard to predict exactly how the matches would go. My predictions were more best case scenarios for both teams based on state placement. And I had no idea how good the kids from Mater Dei who didnt make it to state were, so I gave those matches to Mishawaka just for the sake of argument. Mater Dei very well may have been able to pick up more bonus points and win those matches. Either way EMD most likely comes out on top. A better dual would probably be that Mishawaka team vs. last year's Perry team. A lot of state placers on both teams but not as many totally dominant wrestlers.
  19. 09-10 Mishawaka vs. 02-03 Mater Dei: 103: Grant Martsolf, Regional Qualifier vs. Brian Bittner, State Qualifier (4-0 Mater Dei) 112: Paul Beck, 2nd vs. Bryan Williams, 6th (4-3 Mater Dei) 119: Layten Binion, 7th vs. ??? (4-7 Mishawaka) 125: Taylor Wisler, 8th vs. Craig Macke, 3rd (7-7 Tie) 130: Nick Schrader, 4th vs. Matt Coughlin, 2nd (10-7 Mater Dei) 135: Matt Guerra, 4th vs. Aaron Scott, 3rd (13-7 Mater Dei) 140: Anthony Eddy, SS Qualifier vs. ??? (13-10 Mater Dei) 145: Darius Marshall, SS Qualifier vs. Craig Weinzapfel, 1st (17-10 Mater Dei) 152: Ryan Stahl, 4th vs. Dustin Nosko, 1st (20-10 Mater Dei) 160: Alex White, SS Qualifier vs. Sam Wildeman, 1st (24-10 Mater Dei) 171: Richard Morin, 6th vs. Blake Mauer, 1st (27-10 Mater Dei) 189: Danny Abu-Shehab, State Qualifier vs. ??? (27-13 Mater Dei) 215: Christian Lentz, 2nd vs. Thomas Unfried, State Qualifier (27-16 Mater Dei) 285: Travis Thomas, 3rd vs. ??? (27-20 Mater Dei) Looks to me like Mater Dei would take 8 out of the 14 matches, with 135, 140 and possibly 189 being tossups. It would probably come down to Mishawaka being able to avoid giving up bonus points to Mater Dei's studs. Definitely a dual I'd pay to see.
  20. In the past it has been Penn, Jimtown, Homestead, Warsaw, Valparaiso, Northwood, Edwardsburg (MI) and Lakeshore (MI). Not sure if the lineup has changed though.
  21. Looks like I may have been wrong, it might be a two horse race between East Noble and Carroll for the conference title this year. Funny how the balance of power in the conference has changed over the past couple of years. But I'd have to think that this would be the first year that Bellmont hasn't won either the dual meet or tournament portions of the NHC since its inception, if that's what ends up happening. Lot of season left though.
  22. Sounds like a great dual between two solid programs. But I still bet neither team beats Bellmont for the NHC championship, no matter how much Bellmont "sucks" after graduating 11 seniors.
