  1. Okay, I deserve the slams for bringing up the Logan Regional's performance at Merrillville SS topic. It is an obnoxious topic and I get it. I know that it's not a fair comparison, and probablly most regionals in the state wouldn't fair any better. I also hope all of you are correct and the Logan Regional boys go to SS and get their share of the spots to Indy, which would be roughly 14 to state with 3 SS champs.
  2. Logan regional got 5 through last year and I don't think this years group is much stronger.
  3. First of all Dad, I am a huge fan of your son. From the moment I saw him beat the Tribbet kid from Twin Lakes to win his conference as a freshman, I knew he was going to be a really good wrestler. I also know that you take a lot of crap for being a bit over zealous concerning your son's wrestling abilities. I like your passion. And I actually love your son's winning attitude. I just think that there will be 3 or 4 unranked kids in his weight class at Merrilville that will cause him big problems if he draws them. I have seen the Mer. SS every year since they started the SS tournament. I have wittnessed too many times the site of Log winners lose their first match to another regionals 4th place finisher to feel super confident about your kid's chances, not to mention he will also have to beat a second placer from one of the other three regionals. There in lies the problem with calling your son a lock to get to state. The boys in the region just face tougher competition throughout the year. It is as simple as that. I really hope your boy does well this year, but not to offend, Semistate rankings aren't worth their weight in doggie doo doo. I do however expect big things from him next year for sure. In conclusion, I will be cheering loudly for your boy!
  4. I like your passion for the wrestlers of your area, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion. However, Logan regional hasn't got 12 through to state in a long long time. And no offense, but there have been a lot stronger groups of wrestlers coming from the Logan Reg not come close to getting 12 through. Personally, I think 6 is optimistic. I have already included those really rare "lucky duck" draws that Logan Reg. wrestlers get that make it possible for 1 or 2 to sneak by. Miller from Jeff, Bc 138 pounder and the Harrison 152 might and I mean might get through with a good draw. If Fritz can get the same good draw he got last year he may get through but it's tough to get that draw 2 times in a row. Other than that there's Meyer and Mote, who else gets through Merrilville? You can't look at the 30 win records of small school wrestlers and expect them to compete at SS. Maybe 7 if the wrestling Gods are smiling on them.
  5. Laff Jeff Sectional Advance 43 Twin Lakes Sectional Advance 13 This may be a true statement, and yes the TL sectional was probablly at the lowest level I have ever seen which spans 40 years. However, before the Laf Jeff Sect. fans start breaking arms patting themselves on the back, let's face reality. Logan regional will be lucky to get 6 wrestlers out of Merrilville and 0 champions. Happens every year. I hope I'm wrong though, Id like to see Harrison big guy (Meyer) win a semi state title. I also would like to see the Mote kid from Delphi win. History just hasn't been kind to either of these sectionals. Just saying.
  6. There were a lot of unbiased opinions on here last year that said Lee would kick Micic's butt . If I was a Lee fan, I'd go easy on the "He's a lock" statements. He is too good of a kid and wrestler to be placing that much pressure on him. He will probably get three titles, but to make predictions that say he is going to destroy everyone in the field, is a bit foolish. He may destroy everyone, but still a foolish comment to make before the season even begins.
  7. Not sure where Bailey from Cath is going this year, but to put Cummings ahead of him in the discussion is silly in my opinion.
  8. I didn't attack anyone's integrity. I simply stated what I saw. I saw a lot of young men with nagging injuries go out and take their lumps. All I am really saying is it shouldn't come down to "I 'm too hurt for you , but not this guy?" It was a strategic move and I get it. I have nothing against Yorktown or their coaches. They conducted themselves very well, and I have no idea how such a small school can produce such talent year after year. Congratulations Yorktown. Still doesn't change what I was talking about.
  9. Maybe this was already touched on in another thread, but I don't think it's fair for a wrestler to be able to injury default in the state tournament because his coaches know there is no way to win the match, then be allowed to wrestle in the following rounds. I don't know all the facts concerning the kid that did this this weekend, but it didn't seem fair to all of the other young men that did take the mat pretty much knowing they were going to take a beat down because they were outmatched.
  10. I made that post, and you are absolutely correct. I made that statement to make the point that 132 was not any "weaker" than the rest. There were a lot of great wrestlers in each of those weight classes. I really was being a bit sarcastic to make the point that just because a Logan Regional kid wins at SS, doesn't make it a weak class. I thought the McCutcheon kid held his own among the other champions. That was all I was saying. For the record, I do think he will win on Friday.
  11. After watching Bailey at the team state tournament, there is no way I would bet against him.
  12. I agree with your first comment, it maybe could have been avoided. The fact that the Portage kid doesn't get to wrestle state isn't the Hartman kid's fault or his coach. If you have the match won with 10 seconds left why in the heck do you put yourself in a position for this to happen? Why take the kid into the air at all? There was nothing to gain for the Portage kid. Could have just cut him. Why should a dizzy concussed kid stand there for ten seconds so a kid who broke the rules can make his trip to state. It wasn't the responsibility of the Clay team to fix the Portage kid's mistake. I too wish that the Portage kid could wrestle this weekend, but rules are rules!
  13. Pretty sure I spelled it correctly in several other places. Wasn't aware I was being graded. If that is what you took away from my post, I'm guessing I struck a chord with you. On a side note, I don't think you would want to compare brain pans with me. Pretty certain of it.
  14. Is 132 at Merrillville being called weak because a region wrestler didn't win? I personally thought a lot of the upper weight wrestlers looked pretty weak with the exception of the top dog. Remove Sinko from 120 and I thought that weight class was weak. Remove Micic from 126 and and maybe Davis and the rest of that class had nothing to brag about. Take Forte out of 145 and I didn't see much. Take Macri out of 152 and not much. I wasn't impressed with 160 at all. Other than Osborn at 170, I'm not seeing much depth. I thought 182 looked fairly weak. Take Robinson out of the mix at 220 and OMG that one is really bad. So I thought given the fact that 132 had Dolaldson, Warner, and Carithers throwing all out there, I don't think it is fair to make the comment about it being the weakest class at Merrillville. I actually don't think the Merr. SS will fair as well as they usually do at Indy. Just my thoughts, and I highly doubt the McCutcheon kid loses on Friday. I don't know the Carithers kid but after reading these unfair comments I hope he serves up a big crap sandwich. I thought he looked as impressive or more so in his championship match than most any of the other champions.
  15. I have already stated on another thread, that anyone that booed that injured 15 year old kid is nothing short of a dirt bag. Think hard because if you contributed to the booing, you my friends are true losers that don't belong at a high school sporting event. I was truly ashamed to be there. Some adults amaze me at their lack of class. Wow! I still can't believe it occurred. Where is the line drawn? Would those ass bags have booed if the kid was paralyzed or worse?
  16. I will start by stating that I have no horse in this race and was just there to enjoy good wrestling. However, anyone that called that slam questionable, didn't see it correctly. From where I sat is was a textbook definition of a slam. Hartman kid's head was the first thing that hit the mat because his arm was trapped. I hated to see it because the match was all but over. Torres kid deserved the win, but rules are there to protect the kids. There was no lack of integrity on the SBC coaches part. This kid was knocked out. I have seen the other side of the slam coin where there is nothing wrong with the kid but the coach encourages the kid to stay down just as an easy way to make it to state. But that was not the case here. The Hartman kid didn't come out the next round and wrestle like a world beater. I think he ended up at the hospital. I was ashamed of the lack of class that many people demonstrated by booing this poor kid. The situation sucked for sure, but to boo this hurt kid was plain and simple BS. The real sorry losers here were idiots that were booing. Think real hard, because if you were there and booed at a hurt 15 year old, you my friend are true dirt bag and by the sound of things, there were a lot of dirt bags present at Merrillville yesterday. I also felt bad for the Torres dad that got escorted out. His pain was understandable but it was most definitely an illegal slam. No real winners here to say the least.
  17. I realize that Coach L. isn't the most popular dude on this board, but I have to applaud his love of wrestling and his boy. I realize that humility and sportsmanship are important characteristics to possess, but when it comes to wrestling, a cocky and spirited attitude never hurts. He may go a bit far at times, but based on what I have seen during the actual competition, Mr. Lukaszka has always conducted himself in a positive manner. I don't know the guy personally, but I love his kid's attitude. He is a good wrestler and shows a lot of emotion. At least he takes an active involvement in his kid's life which is a lot more than a lot of other dads can say. Coach L. might want to filter his thoughts a little bit before posting, but isn't that what this message board is for? Talk a little trash have a little fun. I really don't think that disrespect was intended. Best of luck to all of the young men putting it on the line this weekend. No wrestler at semi state has anything to be ashamed of, even if the bus driver keeps the bus running. All of you young wrestlers take some advice from an old man; enjoy these last few days, weeks or if your lucky, years of wrestling. You will spend the rest of your life missing it. Have fun!
  18. Great preview. Interesting summary of the upcoming action. I am happy that my picks match pretty closely. My only comment is that I think people might be underestimating the McCutcheon 132 pounder. He represents the cream of the Logan Regional for sure. I don't know for sure, but I think he was a real sick kid last year at semi state.. Maybe had his appendix taken out right before sectionals and never got his strength back. Sounds like an excuse I know but I do think that was the situation. What ever, he is not even close to the wrestler that people saw last year. He is definitely my sleeper pick.
  19. Me too. But I also have to admit that the Lee kid looked almost unbeatable at the State Team Tournament at Westfield. I can just see this one going OT and being low scoring. Got to go with the experience of 2 state championships.
  20. I'll take the bait and throw my thoughts into the mix. Here goes. 106- Reitz, Cummings, Hildebrandt, Cortez 113- Garza, Crary, Slates, Trent 120- Sinkovics, Torres, Schrug, Allmon 126- Micic, Johnson, Davis, Hunting 132- Carithers, Gross, Donaldson, Childers 138- Hughes, Fuqua, Swank, Krzyston 145- Forte, Rentas, Schurg, Dan 152- Macri, Rinehart, Schurg, Armstrong 160- Hughes, Mammolenti, Jones, Kleimola 170- Sopko, Osborn, Katsafaros, Young 182- Eldridge, Jankowski, Hollins, Bradley 195- Woods, Scott, Kral, Winkle 220- Robinson, Stohler, Potosky, Meyer 285- Streck, Coffel, Blackburn, Duvall But what the heck do I know. I'm usually pretty far off base when I try to predict. So take it for what it's worth ;D
  21. I couldn't agree more. This kid is a class act, Yes, he didn't look like a 3 time state qualifier yesterday. However, he is not the kind of kid to make excuses, so I will. He had shoulder surgery like 2 months before the season started. It didn't heal in time like I am sure they had hoped. He endured a lot of pain and was sidelined for many of his matches. This injury obviously took an emotional toll on him. He was a returning semi state champ and 3 time state qualifier. It was clear to everyone that this was not the Blake Denton that we have all come to know. A healthy Blake would have made it to state again and this time, I believe he would have been standing on the podium on Saturday. Was heartbreaking but he maintained a good attitude through it all. Way to go Blake. Congrats on a great high school career. Regardless of what happens next week, he is a true champ. This isn't to diminish the accomplishments of the other wrestlers that placed above him in the regionals at 126 pounds. These young men deserve their success. It was just a shame to see a high quality Logan Regional wrestler go out like that. Good luck to all at Merrillville.
  22. The wrestling at Logan was very competitive. I am not so sure that the quality was any better than it has been in past years. There were a lot of close matches and OTs. After looking at the brackets for the Merrillville SS, I think it is safe to say that the Logan Regional wrestlers will face the same harsh reality that we face every year. With the usual exception of maybe 2 or 3 lucky good draws, I only see maybe 4 guys making it through to Indy. Okay, there are maybe 2 places where a Logan reg wrestle may slide in due to being in the weakest quarter of the bracket. Other than that, I expect the typically poor results that we are used to experiencing. Of course I would love to be wrong. However, since the inception of the semi state, this has always been the case for the Logan Regional. In my opinion, the McCutcheon 132 pounder (Carithers) and maybe and I mean a big maybe, WL (Duvall) have the best chance to do well. If the TL Winkle kid wrestles to his ability, he too could make a big splash. Again, I am hopeful that I am wrong, but it usually is what it is.
  23. Don't know about 106 and I agree that TL kid probably won't win 145 either. But the TL 182 pounder, Wade can most definitely wrestle with this group of regional wrestlers. I personally wouldn't bet against him. He is an extremely deceptive wrestler. He has a funky style and is much stronger than he looks. I might be a hotdog, but I think he can get it done. On a side note the Garpow kid from Win. at 170 looked very good at sectionals. I am thinking that Mote and Doty better not be overlooking this kid. Overall, Jeff sectional is going to have a lot more champs, but I do think TL sectional is going to win a couple that may surprise a lot of people. Best of luck to all participating. As always it will be fun to watch.
  24. Good! At the regional level I found the wrestle back to be tedious and unnecessary. It basically added another hour and a half to the day. If you can't win your first match at regional, you don't deserve to go to semi state. And as far as determining an alternate, who cares? Whoever gets the nod in the case of a withdraw, is going to be a one and done in 99% of the cases. However, wrestle backs at semi state level is a completely different story. There is too much at stake at the semi state level to not have a full wrestle back. The talent pool is much stronger and it sucks that a great kid can get a crappy draw and get put out while lesser wrestlers get to make the trip to Indy. The biggest difference between having wrestle backs at the regional and semi state levels is that half of the boys that make it to regionals do not really have even a remotely realistic chance of moving on, where at semi state the talent level soars and the draw is everything. And for the record, when I say full wrestle backs, I don't mean that stupid crap we did last year at semi state to determine an alternate. That was truly stupid and a huge time waster.
