Castle Regional Re-Cap

Fireworks in Paradise!

No respect afforded for fourth-ranked Brady Byrd’s undefeated record by Mater Dei Sophomore, David Aldstadt. Altstadt scored a second period escape and takedown that held up for a 4-2 win. This win (and loss) could have serious implications for the semi state draw.

Not to be outdone, Boonville’s Wyatt Ulrey scored the second-biggest upset of the day with a 10-3 decision of MD’s Caleb Schaefer.

Yet another freshman—Gibson Southern’s Deacon Dressler—took top honors in the balanced 144-pound division.

Highly anticipated was the 150-pound bracket. The top of the board produced a semifinal where Heritage Hills’ Alex Smith pinned North’s Cale Bonenberger for the right to face MD’s Tyler Vanover at the center mat. Smith drew first blood; Vanover got a second period turn for the fall.

At 157, Mt. Vernon’s Colton Schneider reversed his fortunes from the sectional, scoring a second period fall over North’s Peyton Bell.

Who respected 175-pound Boonville freshman Sam Howard’s 48-0 record?  I am quite sure Howard had his doubters, but at the end of the day, the Pioneer was at the top of the podium.  Three more years of this guy!

Heritage Hills ended their regional on a happy note. The final three weight classes were claimed by Patriots Jett Goldsberry, Parker Hart, and Hayden Smith. The trio punctuated their championships with falls. If you are an HH fan there is more good news:  two are Sophomores and one is a Junior.

Take Me Down to the Paradise Pin City*- Of the 112 matches, 70 ended in a fall.  Those poor zebras have sore palms…

Ain’t got time to bleed- Mater Dei’s Ty Henderson must have scheduled an early date. The junior only spent 2:12 on the mat en route to his title. Training partner, Isaiah Schaefer, was not far behind him. The top-ranked Schaefer scored a fall and a pair of tech falls. Teammate Tyler Vanover joined Henderson’s club counting three falls and 4:12 on the Resilite. Colton Schnieder wants in! The MTV junior also chalked up three pins. Parker Hart and Hayden Smith rounded out the group of adject domination, each adding three falls to their respective records.

To quote my good friend, WrestleMan: “It was dominate.”

Dominate, indeed.

Sectional round-up- Bad day for the Castle sectional as only 20 will advance to the semi state.  At the high end of the spectrum, the Castle sectional had a better day, claiming half of the available titles.

Teams- MD comes out on top with four champions while advancing 12 to semi state. Heritage Hills finishes second, with three gold medalists and advancing seven to the Ford Center.

RIP Carl “Apollo Creed” Weathers, one of the greatest nuanced semi-villain-turned-good-guys in cinematic history:  "Stallion, we are born with a killer instinct that can't be turned off like a radio. We have to be right in the middle of the action because we are the warriors. Without some challenge, some war to fight, the warrior may as well be dead."
