jlittlejohn Posted March 19, 2013 Share Posted March 19, 2013 Over the last two weekends several officials from across the state have dedicated a great deal of time and effort to make the ISWA State Finals; first at Ben Davis, then, at Warren Central the great successes that they were. This included several of the top rated IHSAA officials that the state has to offer. These top officials served as mentors and role models for the many younger and/or less experienced officials that worked along side them during these events. They took the opportunity to observe, correct and instruct much the same way that coaches do with their wrestlers. 40 officials were utilized over the two weekends with 20 of those being IHSAA Semi-State level officials or higher. Each ISWA Championship bout had at least one of these 20 officials either calling or assisting in the match, as, we used assistants in every championship match over the two weekends. These two weekends each year present us with a unique opportunity that we must take advantage of, in that, the officials have the chance to really work together as a group to make improvements as a whole. In addition to providing the mentorship opportunities we have installed an evaluation process where the officials are formally observed and evaluated; following which, they are taken to the side in order to review the evaluation and are given a copy of the form for future reference. How great would it be if we would take this opportunity at every local/club event throughout the season?! I felt the ISWA State events ran very smoothly and your work matside (along with all those behind the scene organizing everything) was a major reason this event is a great success each year. I would also like to thank the women of the ISWA that run the tournament. Jean Whetstone, Pat Culp, Patt VanHorn, Tina Fouts, Apryl McClurg, Renee Schottle, Trina Dowden, Sharon Dowden, Pattie and Sharon Rossbottom work countless hours in planning and running our state events. Without these ladies efforts there is no way that our events would go as smooth as they do. Thanks also to the many other people that volunteer their time to help run our events. It takes a major Team effort to get it done. Lastly thank you to the wrestlers - they put on one heck of a show and the quailty of wrestling was great. thewrestlingdude Posted March 19, 2013 Share Posted March 19, 2013 I have attended the ISWA folkstyle state since its inception. This year will go down as the best. I was very impressed by the organization, officiating and sportmanship by parents/coaches/athletes. Often people ask what is wrong with our society, they needed to attend this event to see what is right. Hard working people from all walks of life working together for a common goal of improving wrestling in the state of Indiana and providing a vehicle to teach young people to succeed in life.
