Boot
I used the latest national rankings from all 3 divisions (Senior/Junior/Freshmen and Sophomore) to find the total number of ranked wrestlers per state. Then I also used populations to find the rankings per capita. As with any rankings, they should be taken with a grain of salt. 1. Pennsylvania (151) 2. Ohio (102) 3. California (81) 4. New York (77) 5. Illinois (74) 6. New Jersey (71) 7. Iowa (61) 8. Oklahoma (45) 9. Michigan (38) 10. Minnesota (37) 11. Indiana (34) 12. Missouri (32) 13. Florida (30) 14. Virginia (29) 15. Wisconsin (27) 16. Colorado (23) 17. Maryland (22) 18. Washington (21) 19. Kansas (20) 20. Nebraska (19) Per Capita (ranked/million residents) 1. Iowa (20.3) 2. South Dakota (16.3) 3. Delaware (15.6) 4. North Dakota (15.4) 5. Oklahoma (12.2) 6. Idaho (12) 7. Montana (12) 8. Pennsylvania (12) 9. Wyoming (10.9) 10. Nebraska (10.6) 11. Ohio (8.9) 12. Alaska (8.6) 13. New Jersey (8.2) 14. West Virginia (7.2) 15. Kansas (7.1) 16. Minnesota (7) 17. Illinois (5.7) 18. Missouri (5.3) 19. Indiana (5.3) 20. Nevada (5)
Indyfan
Toss out California, Oklahoma and Florida and look at the climates in the remaining states. It seems a lot of those remaining states have loooong winters.
Boot
It's also a lot of farming and ranching states. Coincidence?
mtv2112
It's also a lot of farming and ranching states. Coincidence? Coincidence. You don't see Texas on there. As far as long winters, you don't see Alaska either. It is the combination of a lot of things, but I wouldn't say that farming and ranching have a big influence. There are many less farms today than 20, 40, or 60 years ago. I don't know that wrestling has declined along with the demise of the family farm. I don't think wrestling has declined with the advent of global warming : Some states just have a higher interest level. There might be something to states that tend to have larger consolidated high schools would be more likely to have enough kids to field teams thereby allowing more kids to be involved in the sport. Just a guess.
awood2
I'm actually not too surprised. It looks pretty accurate to what I would have expected.

hammer
There isn't a lot of surprise in these numbers. Indiana is consistently ranked between 11 and 15 in most rankings.
Boot
Idaho with their 5 qualifiers and 5 all americans was impressive to me, someone is doing something right out there. Hopefully this gives our kids a goal: top 5!
