It's all about individual advancement at this point and Mishawaka should lead the chage and qualify 13 to Merrillville. Sectional rival Penn should make a strong showing as well and should qualify 12 to the Semi-State next Saturday.

Warsaw’s Jarred Brooks continues a stellar sophomore campaign by winning this weight class. He should be tested somewhat by a trio of Michiana wrestlers including sectional champ Sammy Ferdig of Adams, Grant Martsoff of Mishawaka, and Sarah Hildebrandt of Penn. Hildebrandt looks to be the first female semi-state qualifier in Indiana history.

Mishawaka’s under appreciated Nick Schrader will likely battle Penn’s tough freshman Trevor Manspeaker in the finals again this Saturday. Look for Bremen’s Justin Bogart and Rochester’s Jacob Schroder to repeat last week’s exciting finals match in the consolation finals this week.

Possibly the most evenly matched finals could occur at 135. The likely match-up would pit 7th ranked Matt Guerra of Mishawaka against 8th ranked Bobby Marcuccilli of Wawasee. Flip a coin here. An interesting first round match-up between Tippy Valley’s Austin Nelson and Penn’s Grant Anglemyer will determine a trip to Merrillville.

Warsaw breaks to the front of the pack for a second time at 140. Paul Manbu has put together an impressive 34-3 record this season and will look to make it 37-3 if he defeats the winner of Darius Stevens of Triton and Anthony Eddy of Mishawaka. Penn’s Ben Sokol should also qualify for semi-state.

South Bend Clay’s Laquan Lunford will look to continue his magical season where he has yet to be defeated. He will likely meet up with Plymouth’s Chase Lewandowski in the finals. They have already wrestled one close match at the Rochester Invite early in January.

The exciting and acrobatic Ryan Stahl is the clear favorite at 152. His finals opponent is not quite as clear. South Bend Adams’ Dorian Stroud should also qualify for Merrillville.

The battle of the White’s is likely to continue in the finals at 160. In the sectional, Mishawaka’s Alex White defeated Washington’s Malcolm White, 8-4. Look for Penn’s Austin Kunze to place third and CMA’s Cameron Crowell to take the last birth to Mishawaka.

Another deep class awaits fans at Rochester at 189. Riley’s Timmy Buckingham is seasoned and very tough. Culver Community has a promising freshman in Matthew Hurford who comes in hot after winning conference and sectional titles. Others likely to advance are Triton’s Brock Vermillion and Plymouth’s Scott Barry.

The upper weights appear to be particularly deep at both sectionals which will make for an exciting Saturday in Rochester. Travis Thomas of Mishawaka is the clear favorite and Plymouth’s Damon Howe has established himself as the second best heavy in the other class. The other two spot will be fought out between about four other tough competitors.
