Gaskin's brother was very good too. It's been so long, I don't know which one it was but his battle with May was my introduction to serious wrestling.
Yes May was a tough sob. Gaskins was the man at that time also Little man syndrome for may. A side note. May could not break into the Bloomington south lineup his freshman year. People don’t realize the talent Bloomington south possessed at that time. Honestly it reminds me of the penn st dominance now. Everyone hated south. I think May would have been a 4 timer easily. He trains with the iu team camps every year.

Randy May was a 3x state champion in 3 different weight classes. And undefeated. During Kay Hutsell’s run of state championship teams.

Who knows anymore. So many things play into setting up the best possible scenario ,post regular season, for your wrestlers. They don’t always wrestle each match.

Hard to say that the Angel Escobedo, Alex Tsirtsis, Matt Coughlin and Blake Maurer era wasn't the most fun time to watch for Indiana wrestling.
All hammers. Only problem with watching was, you already knew the outcome before the match started! No suspense.

Showing my age here....... Early 80's Delta's David Palmer was a beast for a couple of years or maybe even more. He was totally dominant and untouchable. I believe my high school had a very good wrestler that was beaten by him two years in a row in the State finals.
Stud. To say the least

I know it was a long time ago (1971?), but I think Henry Wilk of Mishawaka was about as dominating as it comes in his senior year. He was certainly someone I looked up to in complete awe.

Friday night dual. Indiana trying to get and keep wrestlers healthy. I know hey want a W here, for bragging rights, but if they need to rest guys this is the one to do it. That goes for Chattanooga also. The Big tournament is around the corner at Maryland this year. With the available starters for both teams , 20-15 with 5 matches each. Indiana on bonus points.

I happen to agree with you! Brands is an elite coach. I don’t see a better option for Iowa faithful. I’m sure it’s frustrating being so close year after year, even winning Big10, only to fall short at NCAAs. Question becomes how does Brands get his program into a position to overtake a PSU or OSU program.
?
Keep doing what he’s doing. Ohio the same, Nebraska, the same. Why change when you are , year after year, top 3 or 4 in take country? Penn will have a slowdown, it always happens. Nobody says #1 forever

I have noticed Coach Brands has been catching quite a bit of criticism in media and comments sections of videos; especially after Michigan dual. Some stating he isn’t getting max potential out of his wrestlers. Iowa practices too hard, etc, etc, various criticisms. You get the jist. Question I have is who would Iowa replace Brands with if they believe he has fallen too far behind programs like PSU, OSU, Mich?
This talk goes every season. Easy to pick on the 2nd thru 4 or 5 rated teams in the county , when there is super club at the top.
Every school not in the top 5 would give their little finger to have the problems Iowa has with coaching.
Im really enjoying the close competition of the top 9 teams in the country this year. Maybe not soon but the Loins will fade , or have some downs like all schools. But to replace a top 4 or 5 coach is taking a major risk. -

Michigan 30-6
149 Gomez over Rooks 3-2 Took riding time to beat him
157 Brayton Lee over Will Lewan 2-1 Big win!
184 Joseph Walker over Donnell Washington 4-3
285 Lucas Davison over Nick Willham 4-0
All close. Hoosiers are fighters. How about South at 65. Never gave up. Good showing against a top team in the country .

Is IU wrestling a non-ticketed event? I was hoping to take my son tonight, first time his wrestling schedule has allowed it. But after checking online to see if tickets were available; I am curious if it's just walk up admission. If anyone can shed some light I would appreciate it.

Wow ok, but you guys had me worried here! Haven’t heard from anyone on here in several days. I was worried if they dropped the sport of wrestling over there. I guess not.

Couldn’t agree more. And the talent quotient has gone up a few notches.

I believe 1984 was the last year they did this.
Other major changes that would drive people crazy if still in effect:
From late 80's through 2002, the 5/6th place match participants were determined by the winner of the semi-finals matches. Example: You lose in quarter finals, and the wrestler you lost to loses then you wrestle for 7th, if he wins you wrestle for 5th. Through the early 90's, only the top 6 were placers, so back then you could win your first match and not be a placer based entirely on how the wrestler who beat you does in the semi-finals. Wrestle backs to 5th only took effect in 2002 - 2003 season.
Basing this on the current strength of the Mooresville Regional. Prior to 2009, only the Top 3 from regional advanced to Semi-State with the winner getting a first round bye. I believe the first year this changed, we had a few state qualifiers who had gotten 4th place at regional, thus justifying the change.
I do recall this now. What a fiasco.

The dual will basically be a microcosm of penn state ,if wolves keep starters up, but only thing Indiana need to worry about is themselves. Fight every period, when it’s your turn.

My brother wrestled at State in 1984. There were partial wrestlebacks. Semi-Final losers had to wrestle quarterfinal losers of the guys who made it to the finals. Those winners got to go for 3rd/4th.
When did that stop?

Every year someone comes out of nowhere and unexpectedly wins their respective semi state, peaking at just the right moment…
Who is one wrestler flying a little bit under the radar that you expect to make a BIG impact!
For me, this grappler is bradyn Volz of Hancock!
I expect serious noise to be made. Who is your dark horse semi state champ?
The anticipation is killing me!

I really want to be there, but Friday night 1st round State Finals in my city is hard to pass up.
lol. You know, if I had tickets I would be right there with you. I’ve been to lots , of the greatest high school state championships in the country. Bar none.

I’m hoping we have a lineup that reflects who may be a qualifier for NCAA. Lillard, Washington. Spangler. It’s crunch time, just before big tournament. Not a thinking a win just to feel out competition
-
So DJ was a no show at Columbus. Have a feeling cutting maybe wearing on him. I could be completely wrong but I don’t remember him getting dinged(hurt) or anything. I noticed Lillard not wrestling at Ohio st. Also. After not making weight ( per coaches)the match before.
