1.
Rochester53Logansport18 Rochester46Culver Academies27 Rochester78Logansport
Always a competitive day of wrestling. Snow prevented Peru, Benton Central, and Delphi from coming. It would have been a good day of wrestling...stupid weather! Notables: 106-Josh Heckathorn 3-0 and 8-1 on the season. Loss to Trent from NP at 113 (6-3). 126-John Hunting 3-0 and 10-0. Beat Miracle of CMA. 138-Jay Heckathorn 2-1 and 9-1. Loss to Schrock of Logan. Tough kid and much improved! 145-Ben Horban 3-0 and 9-1. Loss to NP. 152-Braxton Lee 3-0 and 10-0. 5. Camp is coming up in about a week. Looks like we will have a pretty good turn out! Get your app in by the 24th!
6. Still openings for our commuter camp June 24th-27th. Go to https://sites.google.com/site/rochesterzebrawrestling/2013-royce-alger-iowa-style-camp to download the camp and application and send it in ASAP.
7. Coach, I posted this on another topic. Planning for next year and possibly trying to get guys on these teams...how do we go about it. My understanding is the top 2 teams are picked from highest placers? What about the others? Clint
8. Can anyone give the criteria for being on one of the teams. I thought I read it somewhere but now I can't find it. Just looking ahead to next year for a few of my kids.
9. Rochester is excited to host Royce Alger again this summer. Last year, we had 82 wrestlers make the commute for a 4 day (12 hours of instruction and live wrestling) clinic by one of the all-time greats. Royce has a very unique style and delivery. His technique is solid and he showed our kids some great stuff. He also showed a variety of drills to incorporate in your practices. He teaches alot about controlling your opponent and controlling the match with an aggressive, bruising style of wrestling mixed with slick technique. I encourage coaches and athletes to come. Coaches come free of charge and may video tape everything. If you have questions, go to the link below...it has all of the information you need. https://sites.google.com/site/rochesterzebrawrestling/2013-royce-alger-iowa-style-camp
10. Something I pulled out of my archives. I thought it appropriate as we move forward and do what we do best! I am wrestling; do not weep for me! This speech was given as a farewell tribute to Marquette University wrestling at a gathering in Milwaukee, WI. on 11-3-01 by Ohio State Head Coach Russ Hellickson. From the ancient walls of Samaria and from Hieroglyphics written on the tombs of Egyptian Kings, we know that wrestling is a sport of the ages. It touches the lives of all who participate in it and many times even those who just observe it. Who can forget the emotional victory of Jeff Blatnick over cancer before his gold medal win in Los Angeles in 1984 or the heart rendering upset victory of Rulon Gardner over previously undefeated wrestling icon Alexander Karelin in Australia at the 2000 Olympics. You can see the impact of the sport in the eyes of even its youngest combatants. Perhaps in apprehension of that very first one on one or that glorious twinkling elation that comes from the first victory over the vanquished foe. And for those who stay the course for a career, their eyes reflect a passion that penetrates deep into their very soul, a look that impacts for a lifetime and yes a look that makes them what they are. Here is an image that I want to leave with each of you tonight: I am Wrestling! Do not weep for me!! Weep for those who will never experience me. Weep for those who will never feel the exhausting pain of my training, Weep for those who will never sense the bond of Camaraderie that once established, will never wane or die. Weep for those who will never comprehend the demands of my discipline And most of all, Weep for those poor souls who will never miss me, because they never knew me. I am Wrestling! Do not weep for me!! I have been experienced in virtually every culture and civilization known to mankind. I have been contested in over 150 documented forms in written history. There is no Nation on this planet that throughout all time, has not experienced me. I am Wrestling! Do not weep for me!! Look to those seated around you and think of the qualities that make them what they are: Accountability, responsibility, persistence, fortitude, strength, compassion, work ethic, ingenuity, determination, integrity, honesty, focus, diligence, and resolve. Wrestling is not the only place they could acquire these, but By God they all reside here!! And if you live with me long enough these will become you. I am Wrestling! Do not weep for me!! No political agenda or political interpretation can ever destroy me. My merit and my worth is no threat to any cause, but rather through my values, I am a model for others. I am Wrestling! Do not weep for me!! Celebrate what I am, celebrate what I have been, celebrate what I represent, and celebrate the many ways I have impacted your life. I will survive this test as I have survived others, I am forever etched into the very fiber of all mankind. The world needs me. Time is on my side. History guarantees me! I am Wrestling! Do Not weep for me!!
11. If 5th and 6th place guys make are being added in then Rochester had one 5th And 2 sixths.
12. I understand but if I'm correct, then we should be around 200 points which keeps us in the running and I want my kids to know they still got a shot at team state. Just using it as a motivator. We had 3 kids place 6th at sectional = 21 points 4 kids didn't place at sectional = 24 points 5 kids lost first round at regional = 80 points 2 SS Qualifiers = 52 points That is 177 points X the 1.13 = 200.01
13. Maybe someone can help me understand...I did the calculations last week after sectional and my number of 177 matched the number posted on this website. Now, after regional, I have no idea how we only went up 4 points with 2 SS qualifiers. Some other teams were just below us and had say 3 qualifiers and they jumped 20-30 points. Not sure what I'm doing wrong... Clint Gard Rochester HS
14. Rochester started right at 9am and finished about 4 pm. Ran 3 mats all day and had about a 20 minute break. Chad Morgan runs the John McKee and runs the Regional with his own program and does as good a job as anyone I ever seen. No down time unless it is built in. Smooth as silk!

16. Rochester finishes the season 17-7 after a 5-19 season last year. Good work boys!
17. Due to some technology problems on Coach Morgan's computer (hard drive crashed) we are sure we have lost all results from the duals. Coaches, please post results on the results page or send and email to me clint.gard@zebras.net. Post your team results and any weight class champs you had. Thanks...Clint
18. Zebras go 5-0 and improve to 16-7. 39-33 vs Valley 48-29 vs Southwood 44-25 vs Northfield 47-36 vs North Miami 44-33 vs West Central
19. Thanks Chambers and Natt Burrows. I was able to find it in the Winter Bulletin and Robert Faulkens emailed me as well. It is as you say...
20. We are looking for a replacement for Caston if possible. We know this is very short notice...the following is an email our AD sent to the other particpating schools. If you think you can attend, contact me at clint.gard@zebras.net or ryan.helt@zebras.net. I received a call from Debb Stevens yesterday. Caston has an unfortunate and unforeseen conflict with the Super 8 on Saturday. The father of their heavyweight wrestler, John Michael Mangum, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday. Mr. Mangum was a pastor in Fulton. His funeral is being held Saturday, and a number of Caston's wrestlers are pall bearers. The rest of the team will be attending to pay their respects and show their support for the Mangum family. The team has offered to come for the early portion of the meet, but if they do, they will have to leave early. If I recall correctly, visitation will begin at 1:00, with the funeral to follow at 3:00. However, in my conversation with Debb, we decided that if a replacement team could be found, that would be preferable. I e-mailed a number of schools yesterday evening seeking a team to fill in, but as of yet, I have had no affirmative response. If you know of a team that may have interest, please do not hesitate to ask. IF WE CANNOT FIND A REPLACEMENT, KEEP IN MIND THAT ONE TEAM IN EACH ROUND WILL BE WITHOUT AN OPPONENT. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but this issue supersedes any athletic priorities. I will be working with Coach Gard, Tournament Director Chad Morgan, and Assistant Tournament Director Mike Zehner to come up with a suitable solution. If you have questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me. Schools I have already contacted include Bremen, Carroll, Cass, Culver, Delphi, Knox, LaVille, Manchester, North Judson, Pioneer, Triton, Wabash, and Winamac.
21. I should know this... If I list a wrestler at 145 on the IHSAA sectional roster, is he eligible to wrestle 145 OR 152 or can he only be entered at 145 on seeding meeting night?
22. Final brackets and team scores... https://sites.google.com/site/rochesterzebrawrestling/home
23. I will have them on our website tomorrow. Sorry for the delay.
24. While it may not be a perfect situation and it doesn't give us complete wrestle backs, I gotta say, I like it and it is a step in the right direction. I look at from the perspective that now my 4th place finisher at sectionals has a shot at 2 more matches at regionals and has a chance to score us some team points if he doesn't win his first round match against some stud from the Mishawaka Sectional. More mat time against very good competition in our regional makes those kids better. Gives them a chance to hang their hat on a 5th or 6th place at regional. That may not mean much to you or I, but it will to that kid and it may motivate him to do the extra to better next year. I understand the concerns on team score and I think they are valid. I also know I don't post alot and am probably not considered one of the Indiana Wrestling gurus and all knowing geniuses but I've been in wrestling for 25 years and I think this gets us closer to what we want. Our regionals and semi-states need to show that we can run these extra matches with efficiency and do a first class job. If we can do that, then we can go back and say to Mr. Faulkens that we can run another 40-45 matches and do full wrestle backs and we can do it efficiently. Also, we are coaches...it is our job to figure out how to motivate those kids to want to wrestle those alternate matches. Since this news came out, it has become vital that Rochester run a first class regional. I think we always have but we now need to be more efficient. As a coach, I have already started talking to my kids about how much more important it is to be top 4 in our sectional and the added benefits to making it to regional and semi-state. We can either prove them right or we can prove them wrong...I'm hoping we prove them wrong at the Rochester Regional.
