  8. People need to sit down, read, listen, and try to understand this very important point. I want to preface this with I am not in any way part of the IHSWCA other than by membership and I may not have even turned that in yet, I will need to check with my AD. haha The IHSWCA realizes that the way the teams are chosen for the State Duals is not the best way to do it. They wish it was different, but the way they go about it is the ONLY way it can be done at this point. People don't seem to realize that there cannot be an "in season qualifying all in tournament" and there cannot be an event AFTER the IHSAA State finals. The IHSWCA is doing the best they can with what they have to work with. There are people out there who feel this can be done or that can be done and 9 times out of 10 they are completely wrong. Our team was fortunate enough to qualify last year and we had a great time. We were crushed when we didn't "wrestle in" for this years tournament. We had a bad sectional day and it cost us. We knew what was at stake on thAT day "besides" just the IHSAA Sectional Championship and we failed. Hopefully we learn from it. Do I feel that my team still should have gotten at at large bid? Yes I do, but I'm not gonna gripe about it. We had a chance to qualify and we didn't take care of business. I know this much. The qualifying system is at thorough as any system can possibly be and I think it gets it right for the most part. I know it gets it as close as the old IHSAA system did!! Think about how many teams made the Team State from the weaker regionals?? It was never perfect then either. The IHSWCA Team State Duals is an awesome event that I hope continues. I hope it is so successful that the IHSAA takes notice and wants to begin a new version of their own. I'm not holding my breath on that because the root of the issue that wrestling is classified in the IHSAA Bylaws as an individual sport and therefor cannot be classed. And just to prove that I'm not totally on the side of the IHSWCA I will also add that I think it is CRAZY that they have not yet given Y2 the ok to promote the hell out of this event and thinks its insane that the only way that happens is if he drives three hours each way for a 30 minute face to face meeting. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO IS BUSTING THEIR BUTTS TO MAKE THIS EVENT THE BEST IT CAN BE WITH THE LIMITATIONS THEY ARE DEALT WITH.
  9. North Montgomery's performance last night against Yorktown is all I need to see to know they are legit. I wonder if the coaching staff at a certain HS cares as much that they aren't ranked as a certain individual does? I'm thinking probably not. I see issues with the ranking also, and I know the teams fairly well, but its not worth arguing over. I hope my team can turn some heads soon and get into the Top 10. If they don't, they dont.
  10. I see it happening more and more. If the other team has a hammer its becoming very common to see a coach not send his wrestler out to get beaten. Another side effect to this that is bordering on unethical is that these same coaches will seed the wrestlers at the sectional seeding meeting and they will have 3-4 less losses than they should have had if the coaches didn't "protect" them.
  11. I know alot of wrestlers love these shoes. We have a very high percentage of our wrestlers wearing them in our room this season and we are having a tremendous issue with the shoes being slick and kids sliding all over the place. The biggest thing people like about the shoes is the traction that they supposedly give to the wrestlers but in our case we are seeing the exact opposite. Anybody else have any feedback?? The soles seem harder and slicker out of the box this year. I wonder if they just need to be worn down a little??? I have a call into my Asics rep to check to see if he has had any other complaints. Please let me know if you have seen anything like this and I will pass it along to him.
  12. Coaches - There is a new college program being started. Details are below. I wanted to point something out. Please read below and pay attention to the paragraph about REACHES. I don't care who you buy from, but if your buying new uniforms or equipment, please consider Brute for the REACHES program that they have. Just an FYI for those who don't know. Remember, its us against the world and these people support us. August 28, 2013 Williams Baptist College Adding Wrestling Program Walnut Ridge, Ark. – Men’s wrestling is the latest sport to be added to the varsity athletic program at Williams Baptist College. WBC says it plans to hire a wrestling coach to start recruiting this year, and the Eagles wrestling squad will begin competition in the 2014-15 school year. “Wrestling is a great next step as we continue expansion of the Williams athletic program,” said WBC Athletic Director Jeff Rider. “It is a good fit for our college, and it’s a growing sport in the state of Arkansas.” The college credits Greg Hatcher, owner of the Hatcher Agency in Little Rock, with helping WBC establish its wrestling program. Hatcher, a wrestling advocate, is funding mats and other equipment to assist in getting the team started. Mike Moyer, executive director of the National Wrestling Coaches Association, also visited WBC to assist in the launch. The NWCA has played a major role in establishing many of the 100 plus new collegiate wrestling programs that have been established since 1999. The NWCA facilitates and coordinates the important fundraising initiatives and leadership development programs designed to get new programs off the ground. “On behalf of the NWCA Board of Directors, I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to the WBC administration for recognizing the educational value that intercollegiate wrestling brings to a campus,” said NWCA president, Rob Koll. John Purnell, president of Brute, a company that manufactures wrestling equipment, is donating a set of competition uniforms for 15 wrestlers. Brute celebrates with the NWCA the addition of yet another program to the college ranks. What is especially rewarding is that college wrestling is relatively new in the great state of Arkansas. Brute continues to support wrestling through its R.E.A.C.H.E.S. (Rewarding Educational Athletic Choices Helping Each Sport) program. R.E.A.C.H.E.S. is a nonprofit 501© (3) organization founded in 2007 in an effort to promote, protect and preserve amateur wrestling in its truest form. R.E.A.C.H.E.S. provides athletic opportunities to athletes of all ages and abilities. Since R.E.A.C.H.E.S. inception in 2007, Brute has given back to wrestling in excess of $200,000.00. In addition the U.S. Wrestling Foundation, committed $5,000 toward startup costs of the program. “We are thrilled to support Williams Baptist as they take the step of adding wrestling to their intercollegiate athletic program,” stated Jeff Waters, Board President of the US Wrestling Foundation. “This support demonstrates the partnership between the Foundation, USA Wrestling and the National Wrestling Coaches Association as we come together to promote and grow the sport. We are also particularly grateful for the leadership and generosity of Foundation Board Member Greg Hatcher.” “Mr. Hatcher’s personal generosity and his introduction to us of significant leaders in the sport have been crucial in our efforts to begin a wrestling program.” said WBC President Dr. Tom Jones. “The character of these key leaders and the wrestling community they represent will help us build a program that will blend perfectly with our mission to provide an excellent, holistically Christian, liberal arts education, while compassionately shaping student lives.” “Wrestling will give Williams exposure to the thousands of high school wrestlers looking for a place to compete. As a result, they will receive a liberal arts education at a faith-based school, which will help develop future leaders. Wrestling will bring to Williams students who would have never considered the college without a wrestling program,” Hatcher commented. The wrestling program is expected to have more than 25 athletes when in full swing. Home matches will take place in WBC’s Southerland-Mabee Center, with another campus facility to be used for team practices. It will become the eighth varsity sport at Williams, which also offers men’s basketball, baseball and soccer and women’s basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball. WBC is a four-year, liberal arts college at Walnut Ridge. The Eagles compete in the American Midwest Conference of the NAIA.
  13. Evansville Memorials Developmental Division Team for the Disney Duals is in need of 113 and 220 lb wrestlers. If interested, please contact Jeff Schaefer at eisports@sigecom.net for details. Wrestlers can not be previous year IHSAA State qualifiers or medalists to compete in this division. Cost is VERY cheap but you will have to provide your own transportation and housing for the event.
  14. Clint- The Renegade teams don't really have a criteria for making the team. Basically we wait until the IHSWCA teams are full then we go after the best kids we can get. We try to get state medal winners if we can etc etc. I will not lie though, there are a core group of coaches who have worked very hard to put the Renegade teams together each year and we do place our kids on the teams if we can.....if they are good enough to wrestle in this event. This event can be brutal on a wrestler who is not up to par or ready for the level of competition they are facing. It is not for everyone. We are ALWAYS looking for good help. We need team leaders and asst coaches. If you are willing to make the trek to Wabash for the weekend and help coach, and if you have wrestlers on par with the competition, there is a good chance you could have a Renegade on your hands next year. Just contact me next year around the state finals and we can talk. Thanks!! Jeff Schaefer
  15. Money may be an issue but I dont think its the main issue. The main issue is lack of organization and leadership in the states who used to bring teams. We used to have NJ red, NJ Blue, PA red, PA Blue, NY had a team. It was crazy. The ENTIRE East Coast was represented. Many of the states that are no longer attending used to put two teams into the event and the coaches associations for the state helped cover the costs. This was a BIG DEAL ten years ago.
  16. Its really a shame how far this tournament has fallen off. 5 teams from Ohio, 5 from Indiana and 3 from Illinois. That's 13 teams from 3 states that there should be maybe 6 or 7 teams total from. Then single teams from Michigan, KY, NJ, PA, CO, and VA. Not to mention that Michigan normally brings about 7 kids and until PA and NJ actually show up on campus you never really know if they are even coming. Where is Florida? Delaware? Texas? Georgia? Maryland? These states have all brought teams in the past. The NWCA needs to give the tournament director some marketing help and give states some incentive to participate in this event to get it back to what it once was.
  17. EI Sports and Apparel is thrilled to announce that we have added Barry Humble to our Team Sales staff. Barry will be handling our wrestling team sales in the Northeast portion of the state. Barry recently retired as the Head Coach at New Haven HS after putting in 40+ years as a wrestling coach at 4 different schools. He wanted to stay involved in the sport and stay in contact with his many friends in the sport and felt like this was a great way to do just that. If you are a high school coach, middle school, club coach, or anybody who needs team wrestling uniforms, gear, and equipment, please keep Barry and EI Sports in mind. Barry is able to come make sales calls on you personally. He can show you samples of product that you can put your hands on and inspect. Barry will be able to show you the latest and greatest on the wrestling market and will provide the personal service to make sure you get what you want, at a great price, and with the ability to contact a sales rep with any issues, concerns, or problem AFTER the sale. Choose personal service from people who support and are involved in Indiana wrestling over the internet sales guys! Its not too late to get your summer duals, team camp, etc etc gear in the works! We have some great summer team combo package prices from Brute, Adidas, and Cliff Keen ready to roll out. Email me at eisports@sigecom.net if you would like to have Barry contact you. Jeff Schaefer
  18. Just a warning to everyone on the Indiana Teams. I'm not sure where the rumors started and where the bad info came from, and I'm not sure what was done in the past...BUT everyone better plan on making the weigh as explained in the event weigh in guidelines (5 pound allowance). I can PROMISE you that from what I have heard from very reliable sources that if you are not on weight, you will not compete. Weight allowance is 5 pounds. And it will be enforced to the letter of the law. I would hate for this to cost some of our kids the chance to compete so please everyone help get the word out just in case. There seems to be alot of bad info out there.
  19. Usually I am very involved with the Renegade teams but this year I cannot make the event so Terry O'Neill from Westfield and Bill Flatt from SB Riley graciously stepped up and took control of those two teams. Our goal each year is to let the IHSWCA teams get settled then go after other state qualifiers etc etc to give the more high level Indiana guys the opportunity to compete in this very tough event. The Renegade teams were born with the idea to give the coaches who were committing to coaching the IHSWCA teams an opportunity to bring some of their own wrestlers with them on the trip so they have a chance to coach their own kids while putting in the time and effort to coach other Indiana kids. The idea has worked out very well as the IHSWCA teams and the Renegade teams have worked together and had many coaches multi tasking for the overall effort. One thing that stinks is that teams from PA, New Jersey, NY, Delaware that used to be ultra tough choose to not make the trek to the midwest or bring vastly inferior teams compared to what we faced for many years when we used to make the 13 hour drive to the east coast every year. It seems that it was perfectly fine for us to travel out east each year but once the event was moved to a more centrally located location that may bring in teams from more midwest states the eastern teams are suddenly not pulling their weight. I cant say I'm surprised based on the attitudes of the coaches from those states when we would go there to compete. As far as the Indiana teams. I hope there aren't 7 Indiana teams. I think it would really hurt the integrity of the event. I have heard of 5 teams. The 2 IHSWCA teams, the 2 Renegade teams, and Y2's team. The event is capable of handling 24 teams but typically has about 16-18 enter. It will be interesting to see what the final team list is and if the east coast team do any better at committing this year. I think this event would grow and could be a huge event if the NWCA would get behind it and market it better. The tournament director does a great job but he is only one man and the NWCA has many resources that they simply are not using to help fill this event with other true "state" teams. That is a shame. Good Luck to all of the Indiana wrestlers competing in the event!!
  20. EI Sports and Apparel is thrilled to announce that we have added Tom Miller to our Team Sales staff. Tom will be handling our wrestling team sales in the Lafayette and surrounding area. Tom is the head coach at Lafayette Jeff HS and has been involved in wrestling longer than any of us can remember. Tom is anxious to get started. If you are a high school coach, middle school, club coach, or anybody who needs team wrestling uniforms, gear, and equipment, please keep Tom and EI Sports in mind. Tom is able to come make sales calls on you personally. He can show you samples of product that you can put your hands on and inspect. Tom will be able to show you the latest and greatest on the wrestling market and will provide the personal service to make sure you get what you want, at a great price, and with the ability to contact a sales rep with any issues, concerns, or problem AFTER the sale. Choose personal service from people who support and are involved in Indiana wrestling over the internet sales guys! Its not too late to get your summer duals, team camp, etc etc gear in the works! We have some great summer team combo package prices from Brute, Adidas, and Cliff Keen ready to roll out. Email me at eisports@sigecom.net if you would like to have Tom contact you. Jeff Schaefer
  21. Mater Dei RTC welcomes Former Indiana Hoosier and NCAA All-American Matt Coughlin tomorrow night. Come out and get better!!
  22. from Greg Schaefer at MDHS- Thanks to Coach Hoehn for running a great room! We had over 50 wrestler's in the room, including multiple state champions, and placers. We look forward to having another great turn out next Tuesday
  23. I have been an Iowa wrestling fan for many years. As a coach I like many of the things they stand for. Mental toughness etc etc...all those things I want our wrestlers to be. BUT...I have to say that after this weekend, I am very disappointed in Matt McDonough. I get tired of seeing kids get beat then sprint off the mats. To me it is another way of bringing attention to yourself. Matt McDonough made sure that EVERYONE in the arena knew that he was upset after he lost. He had to be called to the podium for the awards ceremony, which delayed the tournament, then he jumped down off of the podium before people were completely done taking pictures. Last one on and first one off and had to make sure everyone saw him. One of the things about wrestling that I love is that the wrestlers respect certain things...and the awards podium is one of those things. Even in the most bitter of defeats, the runner up gets his tail to the award stand. It stinks that this particular wrestler does not respect the sport, or his opponent enough to get his warmups on in a timely fashion and be where he needs to be. one final note....unless something drastic changes in the next 10 days.,.....he will be upset after losing again. Delgado is flat better than him right now.
  24. E.I. Sports and Apparel in Evansville is considering adding some wrestling sales representatives to our sales staff. The idea would be to have representation of our company in the far reaching areas of the state that we have a hard time covering. We are a full line athletic team dealer who sells to high school programs, youth leagues, and colleges in all sports, however we have a "niche" in the wrestling market and work well with wrestling programs all over the state, and nation. We do all of our own work - including screenprinting and embroidery. The person we are looking for would be maybe be a coach, or a retired coach, or be somebody very involved in the great sport of wrestling. This person would have to have the time to call on customers the right way. They must be able to provide outstanding customer service. While this would be a "part time" job, it would also take a person willing to go help size wrestlers for uniforms, shoes, or whatever else it takes to make your customers come back year after year. This person would be expected to call on youth, high school, and college coaches in the your area and provide them with a source for equipment, practice gear, uniforms, shoes, warm ups and anything else needed for their program without having to go to the internet as a source. We want to give the coaches a name, face, and phone number to be able to call and count on when the need arises. If you are interested in talking about such a position with our company, please send me an email at eisports@sigecom.net and we can discuss. Jeff Schaefer
