1. That would be some massive weight loss. Can you go the other way, though. Say you spent an entire weekend down at the Sizzler?
2. Here is a possibly a better indicator, qualifiers/million residents: 1. Utah - 4.0 2. Iowa - 3.9 3. Pennsylvania - 3.8 4. Delaware - 3.3 5. Montana - 3 6. New Jersey - 2.7 7. Idaho - 2.6 8. Colorado - 2.4 9. New Hampshire - 2.3 10. Ohio - 2.1 11. Oklahoma - 1.9 12. Michigan, Kansas - 1.8 14. Vermont, Oregon - 1.6 16. Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota - 1.5 19. Alaska - 1.4 20. New York, Washington - 1.3 22. South Dakota - 1.2 23. Indiana, West Virginia - 1.1 25. Maryland - 1 26. Rhode Island, Illinois, Wisconsin - 0.9 29. Tennessee - 0.8 30. Nevada - 0.7 31. Arizona, California - 0.6 33. North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, New Mexico - 0.5 37. Florida - 0.4 38. Massachusetts - 0.3 39. Louisiana - 0.2 There are 3 similarly sized states to us, Massachusetts, Arizona, and Tennessee, and we did qualify more than them. It's still a surprise to me that Texas, the second largest state, had no qualifiers.
3. Does Title IX work in the opposite direction, meaning you can't have a lot more women's sports than mens? I don't really know much about it, but if that's the case it could be grounds for a request to drop it.
4. Cam finishes his freshman campaign 34-11 and finishing one of the 12 best 149 pounders in the country...one win shy of All-American. During the year he recorded wins against Colin Zeerip of Michigan, Ryan Watts of Michigan State, Dylan Marriott of Northwestern, Jake Strausbaugh of Wabash, and Nick Odom of Trine. Congrats on a fantastic first year, everyone ever associated with Manchester is proud.
5. When did I say worthless? Most have pretty low standards, and I'll always prefer to have small classes taught by professors instead of graduate students. Northwestern is very strong though, and each has their own strong programs in undergrad. But if you're interested in engineering, going to IU doesn't make as much sense as IU, just like if you wanted journalism it wouldn't make as much sense to go to Ohio State. As with anything though, do your homework and go to the best school for the intended major.
6. Here's a better link: http://news.theopenmat.com/2011/03/clinch-gear-national-individual-high-school-wrestling-rankings-%E2%80%93-03-09-2011/ There are 8 103 #13 - Nathan Boston 112 #18 - Mason Todd 135 #6 - Ethan Raley 140 #2 - Jason Tsirtsis 145 #6 - Eric Roach 171 #8 - Drake Stein 189 #7 - Aaron Stevenson #8 - Mitch Sliga
7. Awesome! Congrats for all the work in and out of the classroom. Do all divisions do this?
8. http://www.ncaa.com/sites/default/files/files/2011d3wrestlingbrackets.pdf At-large freshman Cam Brady (Manchester) faces #8 Isaiah Britton (Lycoming) at 149. He is the only Indiana wrestler in the tournament and has beaten several DI wrestlers this season, good luck at nationals Cam!
9. I wasn't saying solely based on athletic scholarships, but there definitely are schools that give extra "academic" scholarships based on being a good athlete. That's beside the point though. There's an attitude among most kids now that it's all about "what will you give me" not "what do I need to do." Part of why Purdue and IU are struggling is that they recruit too heavily from Indiana. Ultimately wrestling is just a fun diversion, I would naively like to hope the students are going to the school where they can get the best education and the best chance of getting a great job afterwards.
10. Is anyone doing a bracket game for nationals this year?
11. That's absolutely the case. DII and DIII schools go after them very heavily. And for kids who want a good education the DII and DIII schools tend to be smaller and more focused on undergrad education. It's a win-win.
12. What are some reasons that guys choose not to do this? It's a great experience and gets more publicity to Indiana wrestling for college coaches.
13. Nebraska and Wisconsin are good graduate schools, but I don't know much about their undergrad. I would agree with ranking academics first, but how many kids make that move? Too many kids now are looking at "how much money will you give me" instead of where they fit best and where they can get the best education.
14. Thanks! These are my March Mayhem brackets, everyone else fills out the wrong things.
15. I would say it depends on how much he grows, but 141 would be a good fit for him, he's really too small for 149, for now anyway. I agree though, Purdue or IU would be a terrible choice. They're a little small, but as far as coaching goes Lehigh or American would be good, though I know absolutely nothing about their academics.
16. If he's staying in the Big 10 he would be foolish to not go to Iowa, Minnesota, or Penn State. Northwestern would give him the best education though, and he's apparently pretty smart. Cornell, Oklahoma, or Oklahoma State would be good too. Personally I would like to see him at Ohio State, Tom Ryan is a fantastic coach and they're rebuilding.
17. I spend a lot of time in Ohio, I'm in Toledo as I type this, and I've never heard that complaint. And Yorktown and Bellmont are close enough they would face each other and one would eliminate the other most likely. And MD every year? Take a look at last year's results. That area is catching up fast. I grew up thinking MD was an unstoppable force, but that's been shown to be false, and I hope the duals continue to be close and produce several different teams going to state from that area.
18. Will there be video posted online or a delayed showing on BTN? I've been without internet or TV access thanks to flooding.
19. The discussion was on seeding. Theoretically Castle could be #2 and MD could be #1 and only 1 would get to state. If we're only concerned with finding #1 the current format works great. If we want to find the top 2 or top 4 it does not. That would also get more teams involved and make more money, the state's guiding light.
20. What about treating team state, if it even exists next year, the same way as the NCAA individual tourney. In addition to the regional qualifiers have wild cards based on rankings. Let Reitz, Castle, Mishawaka, New Castle, Yorktown, or any other of the contenders have a shot. Who's to say the finals might not be Castle vs MD or Mishawaka vs Penn. I guess that's assuming we care about more than just #1. My bad.
21. With his luck he'll wind up in the same class as Jackson and Bradley and draw Tsirtsis first round at state though. Talk about a good wrestling getting bad draws every year.
22. Cam Brady qualifies for nationals as a freshman, congrats! Manchester College freshman Cam Brady was named as a wild card at 149 pounds after his second place finish at the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by Wabash College. Brady opened the tournament with a pin in 6:30 over Olivet's Gage Pederson. He won 4-2 over Wabash's Jake Strausbaugh to advance to the championship round, where he lost to top-seeded Isaac Dukes of Case Western Reserve. He was the only wild card selected from the regional meet. Other place winners were Jared Snyder, fifth at 133 pounds, Ryan Monce took sixth place at 165 and Chad Ulmer also finished sixth at 184 pounds, going 2-2 in the tournament. Wrestling nationals will take place on March 11-12 from LaCrosse, Wis. For more information and travel arrangements, visit the NCAA Championship website.
