  1. 1-Jason Tsirtis 2-Anthony Quiroz 3-Tyler Willis 4-Connor Mullins 5-Brenden Cambell 6-Devon Jackson 7-Kyle Ayersman 8-Quincy Richey 9-Cody Philips 10-Blake Rueger 11-Jared McKinly I haven't seen all these guys wrestle in person, but I've seen video and results from Tsirtsis and Quiroz and they're both excellent in the speed and technique departments. I don't know many people who would argue there is a better overall freshman than Jason Tsirtsis, in spite of the fact he will never have his brother's record. I have all the respect for the Tsirtsis family.
  2. I guess all we can say for now is that it's going to be one great show down at old Conseco!
  3. I just crunched some numbers, and based on the number of top 10 and top 3 ranked individuals feeding in I have the following: #1 - New Castle (46) #2 - Merrillville (33) #3 - Evansville (30) #4 - Woodlan (28) I grew up always going to Merrillville, and I think that it usually has the best depth and is the strongest, but this is a year that has a lot of very good wrestlers around Indianapolis. I have to throw my vote to New Castle this year (for once). I also have data for regionals and sectionals if anyone is interested.
  4. I'm not a hugger, but shoulder/head pat I would say definitely. If they wrestle hard they deserve the congratulations win or lose. I've mostly been coaching JV this year and I tell them before the meet even that if they wrestle hard and learn something I'm proud of them win or lose. It's all about confidence and effort, as well as learning from mistakes if they make them.
  5. I've known coaches who would purposely get their guy seeded low to go against a #1 or #2 seed early and get them out of the way, especially if the kid wasn't very well conditioned. Don't know if that's the case there, but that's my 2 cents.
  6. I wonder now how many fewer kids are at 103 now with the fat checks. The data has to exist somewhere, it would just be finding the right person. Thanks for the great info.
  7. That's truly impressive. How long has he been there to get that many wins?
  8. Thanks Y2, they started that the year after I graduated, so I never had to worry. Now that I'm back in it I'm learning all the new rules. Do they tell kids they have to gain if they're below? How often do they recheck?
  9. This is my first year in the area, and with several good programs in the area I really expected more. Do we need to get high school journalism kids to write stories and submit them? I know they accept that for their Yorktown Edition, it might be worth asking.
  10. Great information, I'm starting to get the full picture. I always wonder if the increase in freshman and sophomores is because of increased skill or fewer upper classman. I would think a combination of the 2. Is the body fat really requiring 13%? I'm not a head coach so I don't have to worry about it, but wow. When I was 103 I was at 1%, and I'm still only at 4% just naturally. What exceptions are there for people who just can't get that much fat? I look at a lot of 103s and don't see much fat on them.
  11. John Sheets is the first to come to mind, I know there are others but I'm blanking on names.
  12. I would really like to see some 5 or 10 year trends. The data won't lie, and that's about the only unbiased way to do it. A little off topic, but Y2 what's the likelihood of adding a weight or 2 between 215 and 285, you have your finger closer to the pulse than I do.
  13. As I said before, there are up and down years. This year I've seen more forfeits in the 171-215 range than usual. I'm not saying that 103 and 112 have huge numbers of people, but they definitely seem to have enough people and enough skill to keep them. I'll ask again, is the IHSAA seriously considering getting rid of 103?
  14. When the Star Press does actually run something it seems to have so little information they might as well not run it.
  15. I was at a JV 9th and 10th grade tournament this weekend and with 6 or 7 teams there were 5 103s. This means of these schools, they had enough 2nd or 3rd string guys to send down their young ones to that tournament. It's obvious some areas and some teams have a hard time getting 103s, nobody is disputing that. I disagree that if you have to recruit they don't deserve it. Some kids just never would consider wrestling and end up good. I was on a team where we had to recruit a 103 and he made it to semistate that year. Part of coaching is recognizing abilities and recruiting those who wouldn't otherwise come out.
  16. I really do think we need at least one more weight class between 215 and 285, that's a huge range. There are great kids at the low end of that trying to fight against a 60-70 pound advantage. I just don't see that many 103 forfeits I guess. Whenever I've been a part of a team without a 103 the coaches went around the school and found one, and I've never been around a big school.
  17. It seems like this just hurts the talented 90-100 pound kids who are just small guys. That gives them an advantage over the guys who cut a lot to get down there. Is this really an issue? Is IHSAA seriously looking at cutting 103? This has always been something bigger guys complain about, they want 103 gone and more weight classes higher to make it easier for them.
  18. I guess as a side to all this does anyone know of any father/son coaching combos, either at the same school or different. If I remember there were several Moldonados up north, but not sure of relations.
  19. Burvan was a good guy and a great coach. Not a lot of people to pull from but really made the guys tough and as good as they could be. I wish I could see him today coaching a team with a solid freestyle program. Vlink is another great choice. Anyone know what year he started?
  20. One of the benefits I see of 103 is getting freshmen and sophomores more mat time. I was 103 and got almost no forfeits, it seems to go in waves in different parts of the state. 103 is a great weight class, if anything make it 105 and 115 for the lower 2 just to make them a little more standard.
  21. I'm looking at all time, of course more recent coaches are more readily thought of though. How long has Kerrn been there? That's a decent program that always seems to have to fight their size and all the other great teams around them. I tip my hat to anyone who can get any small school momentum up north.
  22. I was thinking about who the best coaches of all time in Indiana, trying to compile a list in my head. As far as dominance goes, Mike Goebel has to have that title with 12 championships. So here's my question: Who would be the top in these areas: 1) Best Overall (easiest I would guess) 2) Best turnaround of a team 3) Best technically 4) Best attitude 5) Best small school coach (For small, incomplete teams, basically making the most with the least) Include year or years if you can.

    Rivalries

Benton Central - Rensselaer was a big one that started in the mid 80's when it came down to a tie and the BC heavyweight was an unexperienced freshman and the RC heavyweight was a semistate or state qualifier. The BC kid fought hard and the RC guy wasn't used to going out of the first period and was so exhausted BC pinned him either late in the second or in the third. Ever since it has been a great rivalry, pulling large crowds and police are always on hand. Recently both teams have gone down hill, but still fun.
  24. Should have thought of that sooner. Boot just came from being in a walking cast for a while in college, it's stuck ever since unfortunately. Thankfully my wrestlers here don't know the names yet.
