  1. Jeffersonville hosted another successful RTC last night. With a low of 20 kids on the last night, and a height of over 50 kids on our ?Greco Live Night?. We had clinicians from Mt. St. Joe College, Lindsey Wilson College, Indiana University and Manchester College. We also brought in Army Combative instructors that worked with kids in Wrestling, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu. And on our last night we had a man come in from Cincinnati to work with the kids in Sambo wrestling before we try going to the USAW Kentucky state Greco/Freestyle and Sambo championships. Different schools that attended this RTC were: Trinity KY, Dupont Manual KY, New Washington, New Albany, Floyd Central, Columbus East, Jennings County, Jeffersonville and Scottsburg. While we never had all schools there at once, (as many schools only attended once), they were there at different times non-the less. This tells me with the variety in instruction and activity we did offer something that different clubs wanted to see at times. It is my goal to keep working to get more kids together in southern Indiana at one time. We will have the wrestling room open the next two Wednesday's at 4:30 for live wrestling before Kentucky State and Regionals for those that want to come. No Fee will be applied. 5. Community service opportunities freckle Jeffersonville By DAVID A. MANN David.Mann@newsandtribune.com JEFFERSONVILLE ? On Middle Road they were fixing an animal shelter. On Tenth Street they were picking up trash. And in Warder Park they were honoring those bastions of the helping hand, the Boy Scouts. We're not sure whether it was the sunshine, the warm breeze or just a leftover sugar buzz from last week's marshmallow peeps, but Hoosiers were feeling helpful on Saturday. PICHIN' IN FOR PUPS Dozens of Jeffersonville High School students ? including the wrestling team, the art club and the technology club ? were among those helping make renovations at the Humane Association along Middle Road. All totaled, about 60 volunteers including several adults were working at the site, said Dawn Struck, an art teacher who got the effort off the ground. Three of the main rooms inside the building were being painted, remodeled and in some places refurnished. A mural was being painted outside on a nearby fence. And landscaping was being added to the front of the building. Wrestler Nick Kyro and his dad, Coach Mark Kyro, were working with a few other students, building a wooden shelf for the shelter's cat room. ?Anytime you can help out it's a good thing,? the elder Coach Kyro said. ?It's also fun to do,? Nick added. Fellow wrestler Jordan Hammel said he decided to get involved because it was a way to support the community, noting that it returns the favor during the season. ?We're really thrilled,? said Phyllis Hilton, a shelter official and Jeffersonville resident. ?It makes you feel hopeful about the younger generation.? The association has been around since 1957, though it only eight years ago moved into the building. A lot of the chores ? from grass cutting to building fences ? have been perform by volunteers. At any given time it has about 12 dogs, she said. During the summer, when a lot of kittens are born, it houses up to 60 cats.
  6. From the Courier-Journal Jeffersonville High School students/wrestlers descended in a whirl of energy and good spirit Friday on the Humane Association shelter on Middle Road to clean, paint and beautify the building. On Saturday, art teacher Dawn Struck said, she expects about 75 members of her art club, her husband?s wrestling team, the technology club and others to work on the animal shelter?a project the students named ?A Cause for Paws.? Besides cleaning and painting three rooms in the shelter, the students will paint a mural of cats, dogs, trees and plants in silhouette on its privacy fence, install signs and a new gate in the central room, add colorful stepping stones and rake the grounds. ?It should look a lot different on Sunday,? Struck said. Related Humane shelter rehab in Jeffersonville Phyllis Hilton, president and director of the Humane Association of Clark County, said she was ?thrilled the kids are getting involved.? The students will put in hundreds of volunteer hours through the weekend, a huge addition to the efforts of roughly 30 volunteers who regularly commit time to the shelter. Because the not-for-profit, no-kill shelter survives largely on contributions and fees from adoptions, it?s always a struggle to take care of the dozen dogs and perhaps 80 cats on hand at any time, Hilton said. Sometimes the expenses include hefty medical bills for injured or sick animals. The association operated out of volunteers? homes for years before moving into the current shelter eight years ago, Hilton said. Struck said she got the idea for a community service project at the shelter last August when she was visiting and talked with Hilton about what her students could do to help. ?We?re trying to do a community service project each year,? she said. Deanna Koprowski, a tenth-grade art club member, said she was eager to get to work. ?I wanted to help because I love animals,? Deanna said. Her family has 10 cats and three dogs, Deanna said, so she felt at home. Some of the animals, meantime, didn?t seem as enthusiastic about the visitors. Three cats huddled in a nest on a wood and cloth climbing tree, and several others hid on various shelves and crannies, warily eyeing the teens. Eleventh-grader Susan DiTeresa said she has been looking forward to the shelter project and didn?t mind a small scratch on her hand from a cat she tried to move after petting it. The work ?is pretty fun,? she said.
  7. WRESTLING: Area wrestlers compete in Folkstyle Nationals Ten Clark-Floyd grapplers were members of Team Indiana By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com JEFFERSONVILLE ? Ten wrestlers from the Clark-Floyd area competed for Indiana State Wrestling Association-sanctioned Team Indiana in the Folkstyle Nationals meet last month at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Those wrestlers were Jeffersonville?s Alonzo Shepherd (112-pound cadet division), Michael Vazquez (130 cadet), Brandon Brown (215 cadet), Jacob Everett (160 junior) and Jordan Hammel (171 junior), New Albany?s Tre Marler (125 cadet), Floyd Central?s Zach Thomas (119 cadet), George Emily (135 cadet) and Chase Herron (140 cadet) and New Washington?s Brady Meenach (125 cadet). The 10 grapplers faced some of the best competition in the United States during the two-day meet. Even though not one Clark-Floyd wrestler earned All-America status, Team Indiana had eight All-American wrestlers and one national champion. The top eight wrestlers in each division earned All-America honors. Several of the Clark-Floyd grapplers went deep into last season?s IHSAA state tournament. Shepherd qualified for the IHSAA State Finals in February, while Marler, Thomas and Meenach each reached the Evansville Reitz Semistate. Along with wrestling for the team, Shepherd was a coach for Team Indiana. Also helping coach the team was Floyd Central head coach Brandon Sisson and Jeff head coach Danny Struck along with Vince Schroeder from Southwestern.

  16. WRESTLING: Rosbottom family inducted into IHSWCA Hall of Fame The Rosbottom family from Jeffersonville was inducted into the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame during the organization?s 39th annual awards banquet on Sunday at Jonathan Byrd?s Cafeteria in Greenwood. The family members who entered the hall were 1974 Jeff High School graduate Louis Rosbottom, his wife Sharon, his sons Robert and Daniel and his daughter Patty. They are the second family from Jeff to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The first was the Doherty family in 1995. Only one other school in the state, Bloomington South, has at least two families in the hall. Louis and Sharon Rosbottom have been longtime supporters of the Jeff High wrestling program. They both founded the Team Jeff Wrestling Club in 1992. Louis has been a middle school coach for both Jeffersonville middle schools, while Sharon has been the president of the Jeffersonville High School Wrestling Booster Club. Along with their service to Jeff High wrestling, they are both currently members of the Indiana State Wrestling Association Board of Directors. Louis Rosbottom also is a wrestling official for the IHSAA and the United States Wrestling Association. Robert and Daniel Rosbottom each had standout careers for the Jeff wrestling program. Robert, a 1999 graduate, posted a 123-3 career record and won two state championships. He also was named a USA All-American in 1998. Daniel was a two-time state qualifier and compiled a 164-33 career record. He was twice named Jeff High?s most valuable wrestler. Patty Rosbottom, a 2000 Jeff graduate, has been a United States Wrestling Officials Association pairing official since 1996. She has been pairing high school tournaments for seven years and is the Indiana State Wrestling Association Section 5 Pairings Director. Also on Sunday, Jeff High head coach Danny Struck was named the IHSWCA Regional 15 Coach of the Year and received an honor for collecting his 200th dual-meet win of his coaching career this season. The Evening News sports department also was honored as it won the 2010 IHSWCA Media Award for its past coverage of high school wrestling in Southern Indiana. ? Staff writer Kevin Harris

  18. WRESTLING WEDNESDAY: Four area wrestlers to compete at state this weekend Three are making first trip; NA?s Martin returning at 130 pounds By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com On Friday and Saturday, three area wrestlers will experience their first appearance in the IHSAA State Finals at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Meanwhile, another local wrestler will attempt to have a better result in his second trip to state. Jeffersonville grapplers Alonzo Shepherd and Renaldo Weekley will both make their state finals debut this weekend along with New Washington senior Josh Sampson. New Albany senior Tim Martin returns to state for the second consecutive year after he had an early exit in 2009. Each of these wrestlers qualified for state by finishing in the top four of their respective weight classes at last Saturday?s Evansville Reitz Semistate. Shepherd (46-5), a sophomore, will take on Greenfield-Central freshman Josh Farrell (45-4) in the first round of the 103-pound division on Friday night. As for Weekley (45-7), he will square off against Maconaquah junior Austin Waite (29-1) in Friday?s opening round. All of Friday?s first-round winners will advance to Saturday?s quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals and finals on Saturday night. Weekley, a junior, finished second at semistate, while Shepherd was third. In the 135 final, Weekley lost to the top-ranked wrestler in the state, Bloomington South senior Brannigan Barlow, for the third time this season. Jeff head coach Danny Struck says both of his wrestlers each have the same goal ? placing in the top four. ?They got good draws and have been wrestling really well,? Struck said. ?I know that (Weekley) will be shooting for a top-four finish, as Shepherd will be shooting for a medal as well. Both of them have already started talking about their offseason training in pursuit of a state title next year.? Struck thinks both of his grapplers each deserve to go to state because of how much hard work each Red Devil have done throughout their wrestling careers. Shepherd and Weekley each wrestled in several tournaments during the offseason. ?They wrestled a long road to get here - over 50 matches in-season apiece and 100 between them in the offseason,? Struck said. ?They wrestled the best kids in the state and country we could find, and it was hard for them to see every day why a loss in June or November was what we needed to do.? Not only is it Sampson?s first berth in the state finals, it is the first for any New Washington wrestler. Sampson (44-2) placed third in the 145 division at semistate to become the first Mustang wrestler to earn a trip to state. Earlier this season, Sampson made school history by becoming the first wrestler to finish the regular season undefeated. New Washington head coach Jeremy Campbell says Sampson has definitely been a great role model for his younger wrestlers. ?He ignites in us a solemn pride that burns with immense enthusiasm,? said Campbell, who credits New Washington assistant coach John Maples for giving his star wrestler some great advice in Evansville. ?When he graduates, that distinction will remain embedded in the young eyes of all those he helped along his journey. It is a monumental step for our program and Josh is the one that took it. It is up to the rest of us at New Washington to now follow him.? Sampson?s opening-round match will be against DeKalb senior Tanner Boman (29-5) on Friday. Sampson hopes a win on Friday will spark a run to his ultimate goal ? a state championship. ?Josh Sampson?s goal is the same now as it has been every year that I have had the privilege to coach him - to win a state title,? Campbell said. ?He is tireless in his efforts to achieve this. He has understood from early on that it is the process of preparation, the willingness to sacrifice, the resolve of belief and the ability to execute that separates the ordinary from awesome. ?It is not accomplished overnight - it is a constant endeavor that has no season. It is a mindset, a way of life. Josh lives that life. He has not bothered to concern himself with the odds that have been set against him, and there have been many.? Martin?s opening match in the 130 division will be a tough one. He will face undefeated Yorktown sophomore Devon Jackson (50-0), who is ranked third in the state, in the first round on Friday. Martin (37-7) got his second state berth by finishing fourth at semistate. Last year at state, Martin suffered a 7-5 decision loss to Whitko?s Daniel Rothgeb in the first round of the 125 division. Martin earned the 2009 state berth by collecting a semistate championship.

Mater Dei won the first five and the final four matches of the meet to advance to the team wrestling final at Jasper on Wednesday. ?(We lost by) more than I anticipated,? Jeff coach Danny Struck said. ?Mater Dei wrestled really well, and we didn?t wrestle to our potential.? After dropping the first five events, the Red Devils closed the gap with four wins in five matches. Jimmy Pratt earned Jeff?s first victory at 215 pounds with an 8-4 win over Justin Van Winkle. Pratt?s triumph avenged an earlier loss to Van Winkle at the Jasper Invitational. After another Wildcat pin, Alonzo Shepherd, Curtis Smith and Devon Miller won back-to-back-to-back matches. Shepherd defeated Evan Gibbert in a major decision, 11-2, while Miller edged out Jake Lanert, 7-6. Smith?s win was the 160th of his career, two shy of Adam Daugherty?s school record. With three wins at Saturday?s Jeffersonville Regional and Smith, who is now 38-8 on the season, would become the all-time wins leader and the Red Devils? third four-time regional champion. Jeff?s most disappointing loss came at the 171-pound level, where 43-2 Caleb Browner was defeated by Mater Dei?s Josh Boots, 8-6. Browner should get another shot at the 34-1 Boots at the Evansville Semistate in two weeks. ?Caleb is a special kid,? Struck said. ?Instead of getting down, his excited that he gets to wrestle the kid again.? The Red Devils will have 13 wrestlers compete at the regional. Struck hopes that his team carries the disappointment with it. ?I hope this inspires some of them to redeem themselves on Saturday,? Struck said. 21. WRESTLING: Jeff to face perennial power Mater Dei at team By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com Evansville Mater Dei might not be as dominant of a high school wrestling powerhouse as it once was when it won 11 state championships from 1995-2007 and 12 overall. But the program is still awful strong and Jeffersonville head coach Danny Struck is well aware of that. At 6:30 tonight, the No. 15 Red Devils and the No. 7 Wildcats will square off in the semifinals of the Jasper Team Regional. Both squads advanced to the regional last Saturday by winning their respective sectionals. ?Mater Dei may not be as strong as they had been before. But they are still a top-five team in the state, year-in and year-out,? Struck said about the Wildcats, whose last state title came in 2007. ?I would hope some day our ?down? years will be as good as their ?down years.? They have a great coach, Greg Schaefer, that is a two-time state champion and just an outstanding person. He is good for the kids. He will have them ready to go.?Tonight?s semifinal will be the second time Jeff and Mater Dei have met in a dual meet this season. Despite putting up a great fight on Dec. 12, Jeff lost to the Wildcats at the Jasper Invitational, 38-16. Mater Dei will not be the only formidable team at the regional. No. 5 Castle will face Jasper in the other 6:30 p.m. semifinal, followed by the championship at approximately 8 p.m. Jeff lost in the team regional final last year to the Knights, 30-16. Along with facing Mater Dei, the Red Devils also had dual meets with Castle and Jasper in the Jasper Invite. Jeff suffered a narrow loss to Castle, but easily beat Jasper. This is the second straight year of the new regional format, which includes only sectional champions in the field unlike in the past when the top two teams from a sectional earned regional berths. As a result, the Castle and Evansville sectional champions fed into the Jasper Regional. That made the regional tougher because of the strength of the programs in the Evansville area. But the more formidable competition has not dampened the Red Devils? confidence one bit. ?It is going to be tough, but we get closer every year,? said Struck, whose program will be making its fifth consecutive regional appearance. ?When they realigned the regional last year, it became a lot tougher to win. Mater Dei and Castle had never been in this regional before. We have wrestled both of these teams earlier this season and they were very competitive dual meets. In each dual meet that we wrestled with them this year, most matches were decided by one point or in overtime. We have a good chance of getting through this if our kids do all the little things right.? Struck thinks the past experience in the regional and other competitions will be beneficial for the Red Devils, who have never won a regional despite reaching the championship match the past two seasons. ?Our experience is helping us and growing each year,? Struck said. ?Years ago, our kids were nervous wrestling teams like Mater Dei, Castle and Jasper, all teams with great history. But now as our younger kids keep getting to high school, they have wrestled these teams in our elementary leagues, our middle school trips and at the high school level. We wrestle these teams in season as well as other state power teams from four different states. Our kids? level of confidence grows every time we do this.? The Red Devils should have momentum on their side after winning an unprecedented second consecutive sectional championship last Saturday. Jeff had eight individual sectional champions, who were Alonzo Shepherd (103 pounds), Curtis Smith (112), Devon Miller (119), Renaldo Weekley (135), Brandon Marlin (160), Caleb Browner (171), Nelson Bowen (189) and Jimmy Pratt (215). 25. HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Jeff repeats as sectional champions Devils earn consecutive titles for the first time in school history By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com JEFFERSONVILLE ? The Jeffersonville wrestling team?s history-making season continued on Saturday at Johnson Arena. Two weeks after winning their second straight Hoosier Hills Conference championship for the first time, the Red Devils repeated as Jeff Sectional champions for the first time in program history. Eight Jeff wrestlers each won sectional titles, six by major decision, in helping the team score 283 points and advance to Wednesday?s Jasper Team Regional. Ten Jeff grapplers reached the finals and 13 of the 14 Red Devils moved on to next Saturday?s Jeff Individual Regional. The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualified for the individual regional. Even though he was pleased to see his squad collect back-to-back sectional crowns, Red Devil head coach Danny Struck says his troops have bigger goals in mind like reaching the IHSAA Team State Finals on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Center Grove. ?It?s not something we ever really talk about,? Struck said about the sectional repeat. ?State finals is what we focus on every day. The senior class started wrestling for me in fifth grade, and in fifth grade they wanted to reach state. But it?s nice to finally be able to say our program is established, and for the time being not being overshadowed by other local teams. ?I can?t lie - it feels really good.? Jeff?s seven No. 1 seeds each took care of business and captured sectional titles. Those grapplers were Alonzo Shepherd (103 pounds), Curtis Smith (112), Devon Miller (119), Renaldo Weekley (135), Brandon Marlin (160), Caleb Browner (171) and Nelson Bowen (189). For Smith, it was his third sectional championship in his career. The senior is four victories away from becoming the all-time wins leader in Red Devil history. Jeff?s eighth sectional champ was junior Jimmy Pratt in the 215-pound division. The No. 2 seed downed top-seeded Ryan DeWitt of Corydon by a major decision in the final, 14-4. It was Pratt?s first sectional title. Finishing second for the Devils were Sean Simpson (130) and Elijah Curtlay (285). Teammate Kevin Castro (125) placed third and Jeff?s fourth-place finishers were Tre Harbin (140) and Damon Dryden (145). ?I?d trade a sectional championship for all 14 to qualify for regional. It means a lot to them to move on,? Struck said. ?Out of our 10 in the finals, only three were seniors and those three seniors were champs. So we?re excited about seven returning finalists for next year.? Despite no sectional champions, Floyd Central placed second in the team standings with 208 points. Ten Highlanders earned trips to Jeff next weekend, led by runner-up finishers Zach Thomas (112), Tom Denny (135) and Ben Moberly (145). Six Floyd wrestlers placed third. They were Caleb Happel (103), Aaron Witt (130), Drew Denny (140), Shane Sneed (160), Jacob Faulkenburg (171) and Andrew Sharp (215). Sophomore Eric Foster (152) collected a fourth-place finish. New Albany finished third with 178 points and had the second-most sectional champions with three. The trio of champs were Tim Martin (130), Larry Rickman (140) and Taylor Hoke (285). Rickman and Hoke each won their respective finals in overtime. Six other Bulldogs got regional berths. Freshman Tre Marler (125) and junior Zack Faith (189) each placed second, while Austin Jamison (112) was third. Finishing fourth for New Albany were Joshua Coomer (103), Matthew O?Connell (160) and Cody Leasor (215). Charlestown, projected to finish second, wound up fourth with 176 points. Four Pirates were runners-up in Taylor Newcomb (140), Mark Daugherty (152), Jacob Hall (160) and Ethan Bowen (171). Placing third for Charlestown were Justin Wolf (119), Cory Suddeth (145) and John Slaten (285). Fourth-place finishers for the Pirates were Bryan Lowery (112), Jason Beevers (135) and David Enteman (189). Senior Jacob Golembeski led Providence to a sixth-place finish with 87 points. Golembeski was the Pioneers? lone sectional champion, as he defeated Daugherty in the 152 final by a 5-0 decision. It was Golembeski?s second sectional title. ?It?s great. It?s a blast,? Golembeski said. ?I wrestled him last year in the sectional finals and he?s a good wrestler. I?ll probably see him next week. It?s going to be a good regional.? Two other Providence wrestlers earned regional berths. Senior Joey Libretto (189) finished third, while sophomore Brennen Gregory (119) placed fourth. New Washington senior Josh Sampson won his first-ever sectional crown, beating Moberly in the 145-pound final 2-0. Sampson, the only wrestler in Mustang history to finish the regular season undefeated, improved his record to 39-0. ?It feels really good to get that out of the way and under my belt,? Sampson said. ?This is something I really wanted. I?ve been looking forward to this all year. Last year, I got upset in the sectionals and I wanted to kind of redeem myself from that.? New Washington was seventh with 70 1/2 points. Two other Mustangs will join Sampson at regional. Freshman Brady Meenach (119) wound up second, and junior Lane Massingham (135) finished third. Two Christian Academy of Indiana wrestlers moved on to regional. Junior Levi Speth (152) finished third and junior Cory Neel (125) placed fourth. The Warriors were eighth with 49 points.
