  7. Riley wrestled 14 tonight against Adams tonight- a 58-18 victory for Riley, A kid's program is a difficult task in South Bend for several reasons- the student mobilty rate is over 40%- the kids don't stay in one place- they constantly move around. Also, the coaches don't know where the athletes will go to school with all the magnet programs, Early College, etc. no one want to put in a lot of effort training someone else's athletes. It's a difficult place to work.

  10. The complaint about bad officiating should not come from anyone who has not been out there on the mat with the whistle. Everyone has the same opportunities to learn the rules and help with the tournament- its the choices you make to better the sport. Freestyle and Greco will survive if enough members of the wrestling community step forward and be part of the solution. Freestyle and Greco to me is a fun alternative to folkstyle where the pressure is not on the athletes like during the season and allows them the opportunities to be a bit inventive with their move selections. The movement of increased folkstyle in this state will bring the numbers down at the freestyle tournaments until the freestyle can be taught to the majority rather than the minority. The biggest complaint I have every year at freestyle state is the amount of referees for the "big" clubs- there are very few or none at all. 3 refs at every mat would eliminate these "bad" calls that you complain about.
  11. SB Riley hosts a JV tourney this weekend that includes Mishawaka, Penn, Crown Point, Elk. Memorial, SB Clay, Jimtown, and several others. We use a 16 man bracket and battle it out until the final round- if a wrestler is at the 5 match limit, we call the last match a tie and award both wrestlers either 3rd or 5th place. Tough day of wrestling- 6 mats again this year and I promise to be done at a reasonable time.
  12. Congrads to you Coach Hartman- representing the NIC and South Bend with that big win. I know we had a good battle two Thursdays ago, eventhough someone out there thinks that Riley is a "weak" team. Clay is a solid team from top to bottom.

  15. MacDaddy- Penn had 300 kids in their elementary program last year!! Numbers are out of this world out at Penn- Harper does a good job of spreading the word.
  16. Thanks for the shout out Powerhouse (SB Riley), but Trace is no longer at Riley- he is working hard for a varsity spot at Trine. We will continue to work hard to improve, but being in the same conference/ sectional with Mishawaka makes it hard to go far in the team series.
  17. Juniors on Friday night? I thought Juniors registered and weighed in on Sunday morning from 7-8 AM?
  18. To get the story correct about Hall- he was hit with a fleeing call. Sorry Mr. Barnett- since I was on the mat and discuss the call with the official I would have first hand knowledge of the situation. The Delphi kid hit a slide by and had Trace's head caught up high. Trace tried to turn out of it and the official in charge said to me that in his eyes Trace was walking off the mat. A tough call, but the one the official made. The takedown in overtime by the Delphi kid was a solid shot, and Trace was unable to counter. Credit to both wrestlers for qualifying for state (Trace's third time!!).
  19. Since we are now taking 4 to Semi- State next week, my question is- How are the alternates chosen? Last year it was easy, we called the team with the 4th place finisher. Every year we have injuries or other reasons for wrestlers not making it to SS and having a forfeit is not the way to go. Just wondering???
  20. Mishawaka Sectional 103-3 119-1 125-1 130-1 140-2 145-1 152-3 171-1 Total=13
  21. The NIC conference does not have a "conference " meet, but all members do wrestle each other at least once. All Conference is then determined by the record in those matches alone (8). To get the 8 matches done, the conference uses a Super Dual to accomplish the task (this Saturday at Adams). We have not had a conference tourney since they were snowed out in 1977 and 1978, that time slot became the Mishawaka (Al Smith) Invitational.
