  4. Tom Clark has been selected to be the recipient of the ISWA’s 2014 John Hurrle Award. It will be my honor, on behalf of the Indiana State Wrestling Association; to present Tom, my good friend and mentor, with this award at the 2014 IHSWCA Hall of Fame Banquet on Sunday February 23rd. Congratulations Tom!!! The John Hurrle Award is presented annually by the Indiana State Wrestling Association to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport of Amateur Wrestling in the State of Indiana. The winner is chosen from nominations submitted by ISWA member clubs and directors and is presented to the recipient at the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame Banquet held each year in February. John Hurrle, one of the original founders and a lifetime member of the Indiana State Wrestling Association, coached for many years at Indianapolis Arsenal Technical High School. Coach Hurrle was devoted to wrestling and to all the wrestlers across the state regardless of school affiliation. John served on the ISWA Board of Directors from its founding in 1978 until his death in 1991. The ISWA is dedicated to the example that John set forth for the organization. John's motto was "DO IT FOR THE KIDS!" It is a motto the ISWA has adopted as its own. 6. Quote from: jchas on Yesterday at 10:53:34 AM This brings up a good point. Lets say a school systems decides not to travel. If a kid shows-up on his own. Will he be able to compete? quote author=WCWC Coach link=topic=29556.msg195423#msg195423 date=1390930437] I really would like to know the answer to this as well. Can anyone please answer this?? A few years ago, I want to say around 2006+/-, Mitchell's Bus Driver decided the roads were too bad on the way to Southridge and against the coaches wishes turned the bus around and headed back to the school. Several parents were upset and prepared to caravan to Southridge, but, the Mitchell school administration told them that the wrestlers would not be permitted participate. One wrestler in particular, a senior, was something like 28-3 and had lost in the ticket round the previous year. There were a lot of hard feelings for several years. I believe this was simply a school's decision and not necessarily an IHSAA rule of any kind at that time. But if anyone would like a true answer to this question it should be posed to the IHSAA.
  7. We made lemon-aide out of lemons with 6 of the 12 teams cancelling due to weather. Franklin and Perry Meridian stepped up by adding 2nd teams. Having 8 "teams" we were able to proceed with 2 4-team pools with a double crossover. Meaning 1's & 2's wrestled 1's & 2's from opposite pools and 3's & 4's wrestled 3's & 4's from opposite pools. Giving everyone 5 matches on the day. It turned out to be a good day of middle school wrestling! The results are available on Trackwrestling, but, here are the placements... 1. Perry Meridian 2. Franklin Community 3. Evansville Mater Dei 4. Avon North 5. Center Grove Central 6. Bellmont 7. Franklin (white) 8. Perry Meridian (silver)
  8. The best way I can think to answer this is this way... Rule 5-7 ...A default is awarded when one of the competitors is unable to continue wrestling for any reason. Rule 5-13 ...It shall be considered a forfeit when the opponent, for any reason, fails to appear for a match. Rule 10-2-5 ...A forfeit shall eliminate a contestant from further competition in a tournament, except when the forfeit is because of an injury or illness which occurred during the tournament. If a wrestler makes an appearance at the mat, even if he does so simply to give notification of his intent not to wrestle the match, it would be considered a default, therefore, counting as a match toward his win/loss record. A wrestler not making an appearance for any reason would result in a forfeit, therefore, not being counted as a match wrestled, although, forfeits are counted as wins they are not considered to be losses. Insert Rule 10-2-5 here. Consider this hypothetical example... Wrestler A is injured during a match in the first round of a tournament and fearing the possibility of a broken bone the appropriate on-site health care professional removes the wrestler from competition, thereby, notifying the tournament director. The wrestler is taken to a local hospital for further evaluation and assessment. It is determined by a physician, following x-rays and evaluation, that there is no damage and the wrestler is given clearance to return to competition. However, in the meantime the tournament has advanced into the later rounds and Wrestler A, in his absence, has been forfeited out through the consolation bracket, but, not yet eliminated. According to Rule 10-2-5 Wrestler A remains in the tournament and should be permitted to resume his place in the tournament without further penalty. However, shortly after the beginning of his return bout the pain returns, at which time, he and his coach agree to default once again and end his day. Hypothetical ruling... In this example, the first match and the return bout both being defaults should count as matches wrestled and toward the wrestler's win/loss record. The matches which were forfeited in his absence and any potential subsequent matches following the second default would be considered forfeits (classified as medical forfeits for the purpose of the tournament) and not count as losses toward the wrestler's win/loss record.

  11. This is the reply from Tom Clark, which he posted himself, in the "Ask the Official" section in regard to this same situation. Also, Fragrant Misconduct is a -3 team point penalty. Flagrant Misconduct is any physical or non-physical act on the part of the coach or contestant which occurs before, during or after the match considered by the referee to serious enough for disqualification. Profanity is considered Flagrant Misconduct. The National Federation and the IHSAA have emphasized good sportsmanship and any language not acceptable in the classroom will not be acceptable in athletics. Tom Clark IHSAA Rules Interpreter
  12. We started this in '96 when I was coaching at Batchelor, I was also an assistant at South. While with the high school in Evansville for the Mater Dei Duals, Tom Jankowski and I began discussing putting something together at the middle school level. That first year we had 4 schools; Batchelor, Mater Dei, Belzer (Lawrence Central & North) & Craig (Lawrence Central & North) all pretty good teams back then. Coincidently, Royce Deckard was at Lawrence North at the time. Once he took over at South the program improved by leaps and bounds from top (High School) to bottom (Club), including this event. I've stayed involved over the years as an official and take a great deal of pride in what it has become. Last year when an unfortunate situation arose in Bloomington and there was no facility available to host on the corresponding date, it was about to be scrapped, Franklin stepped up to host and the core of the participating schools, ironically; minus the Bloomington schools, stayed committed to the event and it was a great success. To Franklin's credit they wanted to keep the event and see it grow, thus, the expansion to 12 teams this year. With the absence of Batchelor last year, Mater Dei is the only school to have participated every season in this event since its inception.
  13. Pools are pretty well balanced, as, they were set based off of last years results. With Yorktown (2nd place last year) dropping out this year, the team pool distribution was effected. Following distribution by placement from last years results the new teams were entered based on order of confirmation alternating between pools. Last year was the first year for Franklin to host this event and consisted of only 8 teams. This year's event was expanded to 12 and there has been talk of expanding to 16 teams if logistics can be worked out with the school's facilities. We have a waiting list of teams interested in entering this event just as we did when it was being hosted in Bloomington. Pool A Perry Meridian (Champion) Evansville Mater Dei (4th place) Center Grove (6th place) Doe Creek (New Palestine) (8th place) Avon North (Avon) (2nd to confirm) Columbus Northside (Columbus East & North) (4th to confirm) Pool B Franklin (3rd) Bellmont (5th) John Young (Mishawaka) (7th) Batchelor (Bloomington North & South) (1st to confirm and original host) Highland Hills (Floyd Central) (3rd to confirm) Greendale (Lawrenceburg) (5th to confirm)

  17. Following are the rules applying to both. Keep in mind, however, that both infractions are closely related and may even occur simultaneously. It is within the referees discretion to determine which infraction, if any, should be penalized in any particular situation. 2013-14 NFHS Wrestling Rules Book Rule 7-3-1 (fleeing) Page 37 ...Going out of the wrestling area or forcing an opponent out of the wrestling area, by either wrestler at any time as a means of avoiding wrestling, is a technical violation. Both wrestlers should make every effort to remain inbounds. When the referee feels that either wrestler has failed to make every effort to stay inbounds, the offending wrestler shall be penalized. There can be no technical violation of fleeing the mat if near-fall points have been earned. Rule 7-6-3 (stalling) Page 39 ...It is stalling in the neutral position when a wrestler: a. continuously avoids contact with the opponent; b. plays the edge of the mat; c. prevents the opponent from returning to or remaining inbounds; or d. is not attempting to secure a takedown.
  18. Parenting is a shame and judgment minefield precisely because most of us are wading through uncertainty and self-doubt when it comes to raising our own children. To each his own. Far too many people become vested in others actions and loose focus on their own. Which is more important? Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest. -Mark Twain

  20. Basically, there is no governing body for Middle School athletics within the state. The IHSAA strongly recommends that Middle/Junior High Schools follow the same applicable National Federation of High School (NFHS) Rules and applicable IHSAA By-laws. That being said, most Middle Schools operate in concert with other local Middle Schools, beit; city, county, conference, etc. In doing so many exceptions and/or variances (such as weight classes) are agreed to by association or simply gentlemen's agreements at the beginning of an event. I have seen many different circumstances where teams have agreed to a weight allowance, but, those have again been simple gentlemen's agreements.
  21. 2013-14 NFHS Wrestlng Rules Book Rule 1-3-4 Page 7 ...A random draw of weight classes for championship final matches for an indiviually bracketed tournament, regular season and/or state high school championship series, may be used for competition. ... a. The random draw shall take place immediately preceding weigh-ins. b. The referee or other authorized person shall supervise the random draw. c. Subsequent matches will follow in sequential order.
  22. Team rosters have already been submitted and the deadline has passed. No additions or changes may be made at this time to any team roster.
  23. In order to qualify for the "inclimate weather" weight allowance "no practice" is the rule, mandatory or optional; one wrestler practicing is the same as all wrestlers practicing, practice is practice. However, if one school is granted the allowance, all schools get the allowance. Every attempt should be made to notify the host school if and for how many days you have not had any practices and, in turn, they should make every attempt to notify all other particpating schools of any allowances.
