  5. Andrew wrestled 2 matches at 145 and 1 match at 140. Don't believe everything you read in the Muncie Star Press these days AGoul149. Unless it involves something round that goes through a hoop, they will misspell it, misreport it and in general, not care about it. The Star Press was bought out in recent years by Gannett (national company). There seems to be a revolving door of sports reporters in Muncie. I miss the days when we had reporters at the StarPress who understood the sport of wrestling and could write a good article about our sport. I thank those reporters across our state who do indeed understand and cover our sport properly. Coach McCormick

  9. Many middle school programs are now getting started across the state. I would like to encourage coaches and club representatives to consider entering the first annual Indiana Middle School State Duals competition. This event is being hosted by Yorktown on Sunday, January 10. I would like to offer one update and one suggestion to those who may be interested in attending this event. Update - Wrestlers will NOT be required to secure a USA competitor's card for this event as originally advertised. In speaking with coaches across the state, this added fee was going to make it cost prohibitive for their wrestlers. Yorktown is going to purchase a "stand alone" insurance policy for this event. The only fee that will be required is the team entry fee. Suggestion - I have had a number of people contact me and say, "since this event is being held on a Sunday, our school system will not let us come." This issue will really depend on each individual school corporation. My guess is that most school corporations would not support a mandatory middle school event on a Sunday. We realize this and would make the suggestion that many middle school teams that attend this event will do so under the direction of their local wrestling club and/or an organized/savvy parent or coach. I wanted individuals out there who are dealing with this issue to know that they are not alone in overcoming this hurdle. For example, at Yorktown we will do our best to get our varsity middle school wrestlers to commit to this event, but in the end, we cannot make a Yorktown middle school wrestler compete on a Sunday. Don't let this stop you from attending this event. Even if you have a couple of wrestlers who cannot attend on a Sunday, your other wrestlers will enjoy this energetic dual meet atmosphere! The following is a list of teams who are committed to this event at this time: Yorktown Perry Meridian Westfield For further details such as weight classes, age requirements and tournament format, click on our event logo located throughout the Indianamat website. For specific questions or to verbally commit to this event, please contact Trent McCormick at tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us or at 765-282-9136. We look forward to hosting an event where middle school wrestlers from across the state can look forward to wrestling quality competition in January. Thank you, Trent McCormick

  15. This was my first trip to this event. It was quite impressive. I want to congratulate all of the Indiana boys who made the trip. Yorktown took 5 high school wrestlers and 2 middle school wrestlers. Although none of our high school wrestlers placed, they competed very well, and I believe they all left North Carolina with at least a 500 record or better. In the middle school division Rhett Hiestand placed 2nd at 112 and Cael McCormick placed 7th at 75. Yorktown's 7 wrestlers' overall record was 17-12 on the day. Coach McCormick
  16. Just a reminder that we are set up for an excellent Q & A session this Wednesday evening at Lawrence North HS to kick off our fall IHSWCA coaches' clinic. This session is set to begin at 7:00pm at LN HS. The guest panelists include: Scott Vlink (Crown Point HS), Aaron Moss (Ben Davis HS), Dave Cloud (Pendleton Hts. HS), Cale Hoover (Center Grove HS) and Trent McCormick (Yorktown HS) Questions that will be asked to kick off this session will include questions such as: 1 - What is your programs basic warm-up procedure before practice? Meets? 2 - How do you keep track of all the paperwork for your season? 3 - What form of statistic package to you use to keep your wrestlers statistics? 4 - What kind of promotions do you do for your school corporation? Elementary / Jr. High 5 - What type of practice regiment do you use to peak your wrestlers at tournament time? 6 - How do you divide up the work load amongst your assistant coaches? Coaches attending this session will be free to ask question associated to those listed above as well as any other topics that you might need different perspectives on. This session will last from 7-8pm. Thank you, Trent McCormick
  17. I do appreciate the feedback on the age requirement issue for our middle school team event. When our club designed this event, I suspicioned this issue would arise. As Rex noted, there is no governing body over middle school athletics, so it is tricky to find a specific date which fairly balances athletic competition at this age group. In reading, and listening, to those people's comments who might be interested in attending this event, I have picked up several key pieces of information that might point to a better age requirement guideline. I would reiterate that in the end there will be no good date for everyone, and someone will be "put out" by the final age cut-off for one reason or another. As Coach Tucker pointed out, it is not too late to adjust the guidelines for this event, if it is indeed in the best interest of the kids. Mind you, we are talking about a shift of one month in the age requirement for this event based on the following information. Three people have pointed out to me that in past years the Department of Education's "suggested" start date for youngsters entering kindergarten has alternated between August 1 and July 1 depending on the DOE's ever-changing vision. It has been explained to me that there will indeed be a good number of 8th graders who legitimately will turn 15 in the month of July which would prohibit them from competing in this event. I believe through positive dialogue I can say it would be in the best interest of the kids (and teams) across the state to adjust this age requirement for this event. I don't think anyone would be gaining an unfair advantage by adjusting this requirement by one month, and student-athletes who were caught in this academic "start date" issue will not be punished. NEW AGE GUIDELINES A participant in Yorktown's Middle School Dual Meet State Championships must be in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade AND cannot turn 15 before July 1, 2010 to be eligible to compete in this middle school event. I hope this adjustment strikes a reasonable balance for student-athletes who are on the "age bubble." Again, I thank those individuals who have provided positive feedback on a very sensitive issue. Coaches are encouraged to read over all of the guidelines for this event. There is very specific paperwork that coaches will be required to provide at registration for this event. If this paperwork is not provided for a wrestler (team), they will not be permitted to compete at this event. I would hate for someone to drive across the state to compete in this event and not have the required paperwork, but these requirements will be enforced. Coach McCormick
  18. There have been a couple of coaches contact me regarding our guidelines for 8th graders to participate in this event. I could type a ten page justification letter, and in the end, we would never be able to please everyone on this issue. The intent for this event is to offer "true" middle school competition for those involved. The tricky part comes in defining the word "true." I certainly understand that there are 15 year old eighth graders across the state. This issue touches more on the semantics of whether a youngster is "old" or "young" for their grade level. In the end I had to make a decision based on what I felt was appropriate for the majority of the kids who will be attending, not based on accommodating the much smaller number of youngsters who are "old" for their grade level. In formulating our guidelines I did do a fair amount of research in attempting to establish a reasonable cut-off date for 8th graders. I spoke with middle school administrators on what they felt was a typical 8th grade age. I also looked at actual wrestlers' ages and birth dates. Finally, I spoke with ISWA staff members to get their thoughts on the matter. After retrieving, tabulating and analyzing all of this information, I believe we have established a fair age range for this event. To see the age requirements, as well as all other event guidelines, you can click on our tournament logo which can be found throughout the Indianamat website. Complete tournament information will appear.

  20. As advertised, there will be a Q & A session on Wednesday evening at this year's fall coaches' clinic. The five panelists who have agreed to share their expertise with the coaches in attendance are as follows: Aaron Moss (Ben Davis) Dave Cloud (Pendleton Heights) (also NWCA state rep.) Scott Vlink (Crown Point) (Head coach of returning team state champions) Danny Struck (Jeffersonville) (also sits on ISWA board as State Coach) Cale Hoover (Center Grove) (President of IHSWCA and board member with ISWA) I have tried to secure coaches from a variety of areas from around the state as well as coaches who have extended wrestling knowledge in a number of other wrestling organizations. These coaches will answer questions in a variety of areas such as program development, wrestling technique, body fat program management and athlete management to name a few. This will be an informal setting where coaches can get advise from veteran coaches on a variety of wrestling topics. A big thanks goes out to these coaches for agreeing to sit on this panel for the clinic. Trent McCormick
  21. Yorktown will be hosting 2 elementary duals events during the upcoming fall/winter wrestling season. Both of these events will allow wrestlers in 6th grade and younger to compete. As long as the wrestler is Novice age group and younger AND is in the 6th grade and under, they are eligible to compete in this event (K-6th). 2nd Annual Yorktown "Fall" Elementary Duals - Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009 9th Annual Yorktown "Winter" Elementary Duals - Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010 For more information on these events and/or to secure a spot in these events, contact Trent McCormick at tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us or at 765-282-9136.
  22. The IHSWCA fall clinic flyer will be coming out soon. For those individuals who are interested in securing a hotel room at this time, please follow the instructions below. 20 rooms have been blocked at the Drury Inn ? Northeast at a rate of $84 for Wednesday night (Oct. 14). - Attendees should call 1-800-325-0720 to reserve a room - Reservations must be made prior to September 30 or unused rooms will be released - Attendees should give reference number 2072497 when making their reservations Thank you, Coach McCormick
  23. Quite impressive facilities. It's neat to see that so much focus and energy goes into wrestling in that community. On a side note Yorktown will be traveling to Fox HS in St. Louis in December to wrestle in a 16 team tournament where Edwardsville HS will be competing as well. I am assuming that this is the same Edwardsville HS that is in the Flowrestling video.
  24. http://www.indianamat.com/2009-ihswca-fall-coaches-clinic/2009/09/ This year's IHSWCA fall wrestling clinic will be held on the evening of Wednesday, October 14 and on Thursday, October 15. The location is Lawrence North High School. The clinician will be finalized next week, but we wanted the wrestling community to be able to mark their calendars at this point. Tentatively, Wednesday night will be dedicated to a variety of activities such as a rules clinic, a coaches' roundtable discussion and a coaches' social. Thursday will be a traditional clinic type setting with our guest clinician demonstrating technique for morning and afternoon sessions. More information will follow in the next couple of weeks. If there is a particular topic or subject you would like addressed at the Wednesday night round table or on Thursday, please let one of the officers know. I am in the process of blocking hotel rooms, and I will forward that information as it becomes available. It is most likely impossible to find a "good" date for a state wide clinic that would satisfy everyone's personal calendars. Much discussion and debate went into selecting the above dates for this year's clinic, and we hope these dates will be satisfactory for as many people as possible. First, we wanted to stay away from as many people's "fall breaks" as possible. In this day and age of hectic schedules people look forward to their fall breaks, and we did not want to keep coaches and IHSWCA members from being with their families during their break. Secondly, we did not want to interupt football fans' Friday night rituals. We hope that by staying away from Friday's, it might increase attendance at our clinic in addition to being sensitive to our state's football activities on Friday nights. Lastly, there is a national FFA convention hosted in Indianapolis during the week after we have scheduled our clinic. Thousands of people will be traveling to Indy during the week of October 19 - 24 for this convention, and we did not want to go head-to-head with them in securing hotel rooms, etc. Again, if you have any ideas or topics for discussion at this year's fall clinic, please let an officer know, so we can put it on the agenda for the clinic. Thank you, Trent McCormick tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us
  25. As Cale Hoover outlined in his recent letter, the IHSWCA officers will be meeting at the end of August in Indianapolis to address and work on a number of issues surrounding our association's framework, goals and objectives. One of our primary objectives for the upcoming high school and middle school seasons will be to boost our membership in Indiana. As Cale, JD and I meet this week-end, two questions that we will ask are: 1. What are we currently offering our association members in return for the dues they pay? 2. And secondy, what services or products can we add to offer a better membership to current members as well as attract new members in strengthening our organization? Instead of guessing at the answers to these questions, I would like to generate some positive dialogue on this topic by visitors to this website who have an interest in offering their input. If you have any ideas along these lines that the officers could consider this week-end, we would appreciate your suggestions. If you don't feel comfortable posting online, feel free to contact me at tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us. Thank you, Trent McCormick VP IHSWCA Yorktown High School Environmental Science Teacher Head Wrestling Coach
