  2. The elementary team finished 5th overall. The middle school team finished 15th with an overall record of 3-7.
  3. Indiana CIA Elementary Team goes 2-0 on Friday evening. Indiana CIA Middle School defeats Virginia and New Jersey teams Friday to start 2-0. Saturday morning -- the middle school team will face Maryland on Mat 1 (the live webcast mat). Wrestling begins at 10:00am Saturday morning. Indiana teams will wrestle 5 duals Saturday.
  4. 1. There were a number of people who contributed to the content of the first issue of the magazine. I want to thank all of those individuals for their efforts. With that being said, Coach Riesen (Churubusco HS), and his wife, spearheaded collecting, designing and producing the actual product. In my opinion they did an awesome job, and I want to thank them for all of their efforts. 2. The plan is to produce 6 of these e-magazines a year. (Nov-Dec-Jan-Feb-Mar-April) The reason for extending out to April is due to the fact that the IHSWCA will have its spring clinic, and we also have the scholastic duals, IN/IL Senior Duals, etc. Although the March and April issues may not be as extravagent, we would like to still report on those activities in the spring. 3. To automatically receive an issue as soon as it is complete, simply join the IHSWCA, so you will be in the membership database. A membership costs $25/year. The membership form is included in this issue of UNITE. 4. If you would like to contribute information of some type to be included in the magazine, contact Coach Riesen. His e-mail address can be found on page 2 of the UNITE publication. Thank you, Coach McCormick
  5. Coach Hollenbaugh, First, I want to thank you for putting your name to your words in a professional manner. Although we may agree to disagree, at least you are willing to put your name to it. 1. "If this happens at ANY SCHOOL, eyebrows are going ot be raised, and anonymous comments are going to be posted on message boards." -- from Coach Hollenbaugh's post - Are you saying coach that Yorktown HS is the only school in Indiana where kids have migrated/transferred to for educational and extra-curricular opportunities? - The Yorktown School Corporation must be even more special than what I thought if we are the only school having kids come to us from other schools. So again, you are saying there have been no student-athletes (including wrestlers) transfer from one school to another across our state in recent years that would "raise any eyebrows?" - I can think of many other schools across our state with numerous football, volleyball, wrestling, etc state championships who I might "raise an eyebrow" for before it would be us. As I mentioned earlier, Yorktown HS has won 2 vball state titles, a golf state championship in the 70's and zero wrestling team championships. I assure you there are no coaches at YHS on recruiting trips. 2. The realtors can be found in the yellow pages in most communities. Nobody here has them on speed dial. 3. Again, I sure wish I, or my coaching staff, had the ability to make a phone call and get someone a job. We have a number of good non-wrestling friends in the area who are out of work who we would get jobs for first before I, or my staff, would get a job for a stranger. I am a teacher, and my assistant coach is a public safety officer; neither of us have the clout to find people jobs. Have you not been to Delaware County lately? We have had several major factories close down along with numerous smaller companies. In general, people are leaving Delaware County -- not moving to Delaware County. 4. Lastly, you are correct that any high school athletic transfer must go through the IHSAA. That should be left between the IHSAA and that family... not aired out on a public message board via rumors, misnomers and gossip. On a positive note, I wish you guys the best of luck this season, and again, thank you for your professionalism. Coach McCormick
  6. With all of the attention we are getting on this website, you would think we were tipping the scales of success and hauling in dozens of state titles here at Yorktown. I believe Yorktown High School has captured two volleyball state titles in recent years and one golf state title in the 1970's. The Yorktown wrestling program can only aspire to be compared to great wrestling traditions such as EMD, Crown Point, Delta and Bellmont to name a few. Actually, I guess I would give this whole topic a little more thought if the people giving their opinions would sign their real name and not hide behind a username. I am disappointed that this site allows people to take anonymous pot shots at people. I may choose to disagree with someone on a point of matter, but that doesn't give me the right to publicly slander them from afar. Although I am flattered by some of these posts that give me so much power, I do not have the authority, or time, to tell anyone where to shop for groceries, go to church or where to educate their children. Yes, I will promote Yorktown Schools whenever I get the chance, because in my neighbor's yard down the street, there is a yard sign promoting and advertising one of the three local church based schools. I, personally, fill out recommendations for students every year who wish to leave YHS and go to school at the Indiana Academy at Ball State if that is what they choose to do. Education has become a business and it is the right of parents to educate their children where they feel they will have the best all-around educational experience... including extra-curricular activities. There was an earlier post describing a young man who lived in the Yorktown district but chose to go to school, and wrestle, at another school. I am completely fine with that. If that family felt he would be most successful as a student-athlete at another school, then I applaud them for being active in their child's life. Several years ago, we had two Yorktown wrestlers transfer from Yorktown to Alexandria. We had no problem signing off on their paperwork as that is what they felt was best for them. Who am I to dictate to a family what is best for their particular situation? No one screams "school choice" louder than our own Indiana Department of Education... transfer tuition, charter schools, virtual schools, acadamies and the list goes on for alternative educational opportunities in this day and age. The recent list last week showed an additional 100+ Indiana schools who have been added to the state's "takeover list" if they don't show improvement next year. In addition to our current educational overhaul in Indiana, our society is becoming more and more mobile (transient) as technology improves and the economy forces people/families to make tough, creative career decisions. Please don't blame Yorktown, or anyone for that matter, for the state of our society and the decisions that people are having to make both for family and educational reasons. Lastly, from my experiences over the years, usually the people who are crying foul just don't want to work very hard at producing a good product. They will spend their time complaining and finding every excuse in the world as to why people don't want their product (or lack thereof) and try to blame others. Instead of taking the time to sling mud at people, why don't you better utilize your time in promoting your school and its extra-curricular activities. I, for one, would rather see a young person participating rather than getting in trouble on the street. If you would like to discuss any of these topics/issues with me in person, I would enjoy the opportunity to talk about both educational and extra-curricular activities for kids. 7. Yes, the meeting is at 3:00pm at Shallo's restaurant. I apologize for changing meeting sites, but the last place we met wasn't a conducive atmosphere for a productive meeting. I have never been to Shallo's, but they have reserved the upstairs room for us which she said seats around 22 people. Trent
  8. This Sunday's IHSWCA December meeting will be held at Shallo's Restaurant/Pub in Greenwood (roughly the intersection of HWY 31 and County Line Rd). The IHSWCA officers met in Columbus last Friday afternoon in preparing for our December meeting. We did spend quite a bit of time discussing the Hall of Fame Classic event. The coaches' association certainly does want to meet the needs of our membership. We have had quite a bit of feedback from schools of various sizes around the state. I would reiterate that my biggest dilemma with our first draft for a Team State Duals was putting schools around the state in scheduling conflicts. After much discussion last Friday, we really feel like we can host a Hall of Fame Classic in a competitive (championship) format. I have not had time to read through all of the posts regarding this matter on this site, but I believe our proposed format will look similar to some of the suggestions that have been posted. 1. Will be a one day event during the holiday break. 2. Teams/Schools will apply to be a part of the event. 3. Three classed event. (most likely 6 teams/class to start out with) 4. A fan friendly event (i.e. - don't try to cram 16 hours of wrestling into one day) 5. Teams will most likely get 3 or 4 duals at this event depending on how they finish in their pool. 6. Hosted in the central Indiana area in a facility that could put down 9 mats. 7. Attempt to make sure all four semi-states are represented (as long as teams apply from all four areas) There certainly is some work left to do in getting this event off the ground in a successful manner. If anyone has any specific questions or suggestions, feel free to give me a call --- (cell: 765-282-9136) Thank you, Trent McCormick IHSWCA President

  11. Some of the recent posts on this thread are exactly on the mark. 1. "Athletic Directors being pressured to make quick changes to schedules" 2. "A team makes the Team Duals event one year, but then doesn't make the cut the following year so they have to find another option for that weekend somewhere around the state" (thus creating major scheduling ripples across the state) It is a pretty big animal to tackle as it impacts most all programs across the state. I personally apologize for prematurely releasing a Team Duals format and then switching directions shortly thereafter. In the end I, and the other officers and reps, felt it was better to slow down a bit and change direction now rather than create a debacle of an event down the road. Someone in one thread mentioned that it would be ideal to have a blocked out set of days during the season to host a Team Duals event that would not put so many teams (if any) in a scheduling crunch. You are exactly right. Whether that is over the holidays or an IHSWCA - IHSAA agreed upon set of moratorium days, that will be the ideal goal down the road. Some Hall of Fame Classic "knowns" at this point: 1. Teams will still apply to participate based on their desire to participate. 2. It will be held over the holiday break. Exact dates will be selected based on teams' selected and their holiday tournament schedules. 3. It will be a "classed" showcase event. Coach McCormick
  12. I just e-mailed Joe the IHSWCA minutes from Sunday. In addition to the Team Duals discussion that took place Sunday, much of our discussion at the meeting revolved around how to increase membership. The question that was posed was, "what do members expect to get for their money/dues?" One product that will be coming out in December will be our first IHSWCA e-newsletter. Thank you to Coach Riesen (Churubusco) for volunteering to head that project up. It was noted that we do have an awful lot of lay coaches in our ranks, and sometimes, they just don't get the information or don't have the resources to join the association. Our regional reps were charged Sunday with contacting every school in their regional in increasing membership. If there is/are other services and or products that you have in mind, please e-mail one of the officers and let us know what your idea is. We are searching for things that truly benefit our membership in a meaningful way. Coach McCormick
  13. I would like to weigh in on this dialogue for what it is worth. I don't know that there is anything I can say that will satisfy all interested parties, but I will try to bring some clarity (at least from my perspective). 1. It should be noted that the IHSWCA is not the responsible party for hosting championship winter events in our state. There is an agency called the IHSAA that holds the reigns to this job. The IHSWCA is made up of a small group of volunteers who try to do their best to offer programs and services to kids and coaches in our state. Personally, I would like to thank the gentlemen who give of their valuable time in carrying out the positive experiences that the association does offer to our members and wrestlers in our state. 2. As the name indicates, the IHSWCA is an organization that is supposed to assist coaches/programs --- not lay extra burden on coaches/programs. I, too, was pretty excited about the Team State Duals format we had designed for the 2012-13 season. But after further thought and careful discussion with other coaches, it became apparent to me that we were going to put many programs in a bad scheduling dilemma. I, and others, just don't feel that this was fair to ask of coaches/teams. 3. Not every wrestling event has to determine the "champion of the world". By nature, wrestling coaches are very competitive individuals, so we do enjoy pitting the best against the best to see the outcome. I do think there is merit though, at times, in hosting events that celebrate our sport by putting an emphasis on participation rather than domination. 4. I will point out again that the IHSWCA will keep the Team State Duals (classed) concept in mind. Just please be patient as we work through some very difficult decisions that impact programs around the entire state. Who knows... maybe soon you will see a Hall of Fame Classic transition into a Classed Team State Duals in a few years. Coach McCormick
  14. The IHSWCA officers and regional representatives from around the state met yesterday afternoon. The IHSWCA Team State Duals was indeed one of the major topics of discussion. After releasing the event format and date at the fall clinic, we have had a fair amount of feedback from coaches around the state. Although most people like the idea of the team duals sponsored by the coaches' association, the sentiment from a number of coaches is that it is going to create a scheduling nightmare across the state. Throughout our discussions yesterday, we felt like this was going to put an unnecessary burden on coaches/teams in having to choose between staying in their traditional January 5 event or participating in a coaches' association sponsored event. Not to mention, what if the school who has hosted an event on Jan. 5 for many years wanted to participate in the Team State Duals event themselves. The other sticking point that was brought up was the fall out that could likely occur with athletic directors across the state who would also be negatively impacted by scheduling problems. After much discussion, we have decided to switch gears initially for our 2012-13 coaches' association event. The details still have to be hammered out, but we will be hosting a Hall of Fame Classic much like they do in other sports. It will be held over the holiday break. It will still be a "classed" event, so we can keep the spirit of participation by schools of all sizes alive. We hope that it will be fan friendly in that a school will know that they are going to compete at say 11am and 6pm on the given day, so fans from that particular team would be able to better plan a day of activities in the Indianapolis area over the holidays. It should be noted that the coaches association does still hope to host and sponsor a classed team state duals in the future, but we feel that logistically we cannot pull this off initially without placing hardship on schools across the state. We are an association that is supposed to help and support coaches in our sport... not put undue burden on our membership. We hope that a Hall of Fame Classic event will allow us to ease our way into this process while still celebrating the sport of wrestling. Coach McCormick
  15. This Sunday's monthly IHSWCA business meeting location has been changed. We will be meeting on the south side of Indianapolis at a restaurant called Harry C's (5055 S. Dearborn Ave., Indianapolis, IN, 46227). The meeting will begin at 3:00pm. Coach McCormick
  16. Camp approaching 60 wrestler mark. See a complete list of campers under the "Prime Time" thread under Camps and Clinics section of Indianamat. There are drill partners for virtually all ages and sizes of wrestlers. Guest clinicians -- Coach Zerkle (Golden Cross WC/ Cincinnati LaSalle HS), Coach Hull and Coach Bradley are all set to make the trip to Yorktown for this year's camp. Each of these clinicians will spend a day at the Prime Time camp. There is still plenty of room and time to get into this year's camp. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Coach McCormick at tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us or by phone 765-282-9136. Coach McCormick
  17. Plans are moving along nicely in preparation for the 13th annual Prime Time Wrestling Camp. This year's camp has been moved to Yorktown as New Castle will still be in school due to weather delays that lengthened their school year. 18. Coach Gard -- Right now the committee is simply the IHSWCA officers. I will be selecting a few other coaches in the next week or so that have expressed an interest in being part of the committee. Mr. Wilkins - You make a very valid point. I spoke to another coach at the spring clinic who thinks that the IHSAA would like to see us fall flat on our faces and fail at running an event of this nature. (i.e. - "I told you so") Y2 - You are certainly on the right track with regard to the calendar and other important points to this project. -- Late November/early December --- most would say that is too early (some teams don't even have football players out yet) -- Probably not a good idea to tackle the holiday break for the reasons you mentioned (plus some vacation during this time) -- You are correct about conference week-ends (typically 2nd and 3rd week-ends of January) -- This basically leaves either the week before Christmas break or the week after Christmas break in general terms.
  19. KarlHungus: While I understand your point of "logical inconsistency", the fact still remains that the IHSAA classifies wrestling as an individual sport, if nothing more than for the post season tournament. After all, the IHSAA doesn't tell Turkey Run HS that they can't wrestle Ben Davis during the regular wrestling season. The IHSAA, in so many terms, is primarily concerned about the framework of the post season event when classifying sports. I am not saying I agree with how they classify (and manage) individual sports, but that is just the way it is. We can only control the "controllables" and we can't control the IHSAA. We are attempting to work with them to the best of our ability and resources. Boot: All ideas are on the table right now. Again, remember that the IHSAA has a fully paid office staff and support of AD's and administrators around the state when they run their post season events. The IHSWCA is comprised of 3 officers and currently, 12 regional reps from around the state of who none are paid for their efforts with the IHSWCA. To paraphrase, I don't want to bite off more than we can chew. I would love nothing more than an "all in" event for all to participate in, but we must be realistic in what we can accomplish in the event's infancy. Y2: I guess I don't follow your thought process. I think you are jumping to conclusions as there have been no decisions made yet as to what the format of the event will look like. If a format is decided on that would "invite" teams into the tournament based on a formula, then I would congratulate those teams for their hard work and dedication rather than tell other teams that they suck. If there is a team(s) that don't make the cut one year, then I would expect that team would buckle down and work harder to make the cut the next year. From where I am sitting, I think we have an opportunity to equitably include more teams from across Indiana than has been done over the past 15 years. In that spirit, I wouldn't say that just because a team didn't make the final 8 to Center Grove that they automatically sucked. Just as has been the case over many decades (classed or non-classed), programs have peaks and valleys. Just because a team has an off year, or isn't the best team in the state, I wouldn't think they are any less respected throughout the wrestling community. I guess to sum my comments up I don't look at this as taking opportunities away from teams rather offering more opportunities to more teams.
  20. I will attempt to shed some light on this topic. I would first like to establish some perspective by addressing a couple of key points: 1. The IHSWCA is a volunteer organization with a modest savings account. This organization's purpose is to provide guidance and support to coaches and wrestling programs in Indiana. The IHSWCA does attempt to work with the IHSAA, but ultimately, the IHSAA oversees all Indiana high school athletics and therefore has the final say-so (vote) when it comes to making decisions that impact our sport. 2. The IHSAA will hear no part of wrestlebacks or "classing" the post season tournament. Whether you agree or disagree with this, that is just the way it is right now. It is also that way for the other IHSAA individually labeled sports. FACTS A. Cale Hoover, JD Minch and myself recently met with Assistant Commissioner Robert Faulkens in Indianapolis to primarily discuss the post season team duals event. B. Mr. Faulkens made it very clear that next season will be the last year for the Team Duals event as we know it. C. Mr. Faulkens then eagerly offered that the IHSAA would allow (not have a problem with) the IHSWCA to manage a team duals event during the season (before sectionals). He even went as far as to offer some ideas on what this event could look like in his opinion. D. Next, I asked him 2 questions point blank. First, would the IHSAA allow extra weigh-ins for teams to participate in such an "in season" event above and beyond their normally scheduled events. Second, I asked him if it would rub the IHSAA wrong if we made it a "classed" team duals event. E. He said it would be no problem to grant additional weigh-ins for such an event AND he said no, the IHSAA would not care if we hosted a "classed" team event. OPINION 1. Although we will never please everyone, I actually see this arrangement as a great opportunity to have our cake and eat it too. We get to separate our individual and team events which some say wear out our athletes in February. We will have a chance to develop a truly "classed" team state event in which schools of all sizes can aspire and work toward being a true part of with a shot at true success. 2. Without a doubt there are many, many nuts and bolts to work out in planning this event. No matter when it takes place during the season, someone's local tournament is going to be dislodged or at the very least impacted. 3. The IHSWCA officers have already had some great ideas presented to them. Some have sketched out an "all in" event that would essentially include all teams in the state. Others have suggested we start small and grow the event over time. It should be remembered that to run a major state wide event would take massive man power and coordination. And yes, we would indeed have to count on AD's and administrators across the state to host and support an "all in" event. Most agree that this event would need to take place in a one week time period in order to have minimal impact on teams' schedules that are already in place. 4. It will no doubt take time to develop a successful team state duals event. The IHSWCA will be meeting with a committee of coaches toward the end of May to begin putting together a plan which would be implemented during the 2012-13 season. 5. There is one other alternative - Not plan anything at all in the way of an IHSWCA team state duals event.
  21. Mark Durham will be coordinating the IN-IL live scoring on trackwrestling for tomorrow's event. Indiana Mat Officials will be Josh Medvescek, Frankie Medvescek, Jon Hammond and Jim Ledbetter. Coach McCormick
  22. Gregory will not be able to participate this week-end, but Raley was able to fit the event in. So Raley is in at 135. Price will not be able to participate. Just found out tonight. Waiting to hear from Abraham Que (Elkhart Central). Coach McCormick
  23. We have had a senior wrestler get injured who was going to wrestle in the IN-IL duals this week-end. I need Ethan Raley (or one of his coaches) to contact me ASAP. Coach McCormick tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us 765-282-9136
