  1. Wrestling USA Magazine - May 30th, 2009 Issue 2009 High School All Americans Camden Eppert Steven Sandefer 2009 High School Honorable Mention All Americans Cashe Quiroga Taylor March Daniel Young Briar Runyon Marcus Shrewsberry Adam Chalfant Congrats to all....Best of luck at the next level!!
  2. Parents, coaches and middle school wrestlers - if you are looking for one of the best camp experiences for your middle school wrestler, Prime Time Wrestling Camp is the one. Looking at the list, this is going to be another great camp experience. From our own experience, these opportunities are the absolute best way for your young wrestlers to get to that next level. The Prime Time Camp is one of the best run learning experiences your young wrestlers could hope for. In addition to the training, technique and drilling your wrestler will be learning, he will also be meeting and making friends at all levels that will continue to help him at all levels of wrestling in the future as they have done for my son. Steven's summer schedule gets a little crazy every year as most of yours do, but this is the one week that he asked us to block out to make sure he could help out at. Last year Steven was coming off of his second knee surgery and feeling a little down about his future in this sport. He had previously committed to work the Prime Time Camp, but after surgery did not feel as if he would be the best influence or coach since he was not able to get on the mat with the kids. He tried to tell Coach Dulaney that he may not be able to help out.........of course Coach Dulaney would not have any of it and convinced Steven to come, that he would still put him to work and be able to use him. You see, I think Coach Dulaney knew that this was exactly what Steven really needed. The end result was a Senior in High School who came home rejuvenated and excited about wrestling because of the kids he had been around all week. The opportunity to go back to your roots and see where you started and how exciting it is to each of these kids made my son's experience as a counselor and coach one that he will never forget. This is just one example of the type of experience your wrestler may have. This is the reason Steven has been looking forward to helping out with Prime Time Camp this year......to be inspired by your kids! If you were thinking about it, but weren't quite sure what camp to send your son to....the Prime Time Camp is the right one! Positively promote the sport! Steve Sandefer
  3. We would all acknowledge that this site has done a great job of tracking and listing the Indiana Class of 2009 that will be wrestling at the next level, but as I look at the list.....is this the largest number of kids from one class to wrestle in college? If so, would you say that is an indication of the growth of our sport in Indiana? Great to see so many taking advantage of the opportunities to continue in this sport at the next level. I'm pretty sure this list will continue to grow, as I know of at least one other that is not yet listed and I'm sure there are others. What are your thoughts?
  4. Steven's course of study will be Pre Physical Therapy, on the path to grad school for DPT Physical Therapy. Which is why UIndy was such a great fit. He may still end up there just not for five more years. Congrats to the Mascaro family as well, since they like to pair up the wrestlers, and these two are the last two that have come in, we may be moving them into the same dorm.
  5. Steven verbally informed Coach Hinkel that he has chosen to be a part of this elite group of incoming Indiana wrestlers that will be attending Purdue University. The opportunity to stay close to home (yes he is a momma's boy) and represent Indiana at the collegiate level as a home grown Indiana boy was a huge factor in his decision. Possibly the biggest bonus was the opportunity to join some of the other State's elite who have chosen to do the same. Great group of kids, it should be fun to watch!! We would also like to again thank the University of Indianapolis for allowing Steven to "chase his dreams". Class act all the way.
  6. No, because he was a signed athlete he will not even be able to have contact with any potentials until the NCAA has signed off, hopefully early next week. He will be starting the process all over from scratch. Timing may not be the best for this, but it is what he wanted to do. Any thoughts regarding timing? I know that the next signing period starts on April 8th. We certainly won't be on the front end of that!
  7. Since this has come up, out of respect for UIndy, I will try to explain. I guess you could say Steven's trip to St Louis for the NCAA Div I Championships was a life changing experience. Upon return he was convinced that if he did not wrestle at the Division I level he would regret it for the rest of his life. We talked to UIndy about it and thier consistent response has been that they would support whatever direction that Steven feels he needs to go. After much discussion at home, on Tuesday of this week we requested a release from his NLI. The University of Indianapolis has graciously granted that request. I would like to personally thank Coach Kyle Fellure and Dr. Sue Willey AD for the way they have handled our request. From our first initial contact with this institution, they have made you feel that it is always about what is best for the student athlete that matters. Top Notch Class Act! We will continue to support the University of Indianapolis, the Wrestling Program, coaches and student athletes. As a parent, I strongly believe in my heart that UIndy is a great college choice for your kids. Steve Sandefer
  8. Congrats to an outstanding young man who joined an Elite Club as an IHSAA State Champion, but also the even more prestigious club......."Red Headed State Champs Club". They don't just let anyone in!!! Welcome to the Club Daniel Young, we are very proud of you! The Sandefer Family
  9. I agree also. For those that have watched Steven wrestle over the years....quite uncharacteristic that he would "celebrate" in any fashion. More of a spur of the moment, rather than well thought out plan. Steven has nothing but respect for Ryan Stahl and predicted on the drive home last night that "Ryan Stahl will win a State Title next year!!" Sincere apologies to anyone who interpreted Steven's burst of emotion in the culmination of his high school career as disrespectful, because it was not meant to be. Steve Sandefer
  10. This is what this sport has been about for us. These two buddy'd up at Virginia Beach Nationals when they were in the Elementary Division and have been best of friends ever since. Travel Buddies, workout partners, always there for the highs, and nothing but support for each other at the lows. There was no one more thrilled for Taylor than the guy doing the "special delivery". Taylor March - State Champ A title well deserved that you will have the rest of your life! Congrats to a special young man who has a special place in our hearts!! The Sandefer Family
  11. Which weight class has the most experienced field based on the number of state appearances for each qualifier = Total experience per weight class. Can anyone list each weight class for us? Might be interesting!
  12. Nice post Jeff Sheets! Your post was not only appropriate and correct in every way but also a testament to the class and image that has always been portrayed by the Bellmont Wrestling program. The conduct of your coaches and kids and the support of your parents reflects the pride that is in your community that drives this program down state year in and year out. Congratulations! That being said, I have to be honest and really thought that Yorktown was going to punch their ticket this year. In this sport, little things can become big things very quickly....ie sorry to hear about the Burke boy....from experience, any injury to a young man at this age is unfortunate. Best wishes on the outcome. I also think it is unfortunate that any coach in this sport that we all claim to love would be subject to the criticism that has been portrayed here. The style and passion that a coach portrays can be very personal. No two coaches are really alike, they all have different styles and portray them in different ways. My son has had the priveledge of working with many coaches over the years, all great coaches with different styles.....but when it comes to getting the best out of my son, Troy Dulaney is certainly one of the best. When you are one of Troy's kids, whether it be Team Indiana Schoolboy, Prime Time Camp etc.....you are always one of Troy's kids. Schoolboy days were many years ago, but he continues to coach my son and many others every chance he gets. We have met and become friends with many good families through this sport over the years and consider it an honor and a priveledge to call the Dulaneys "good friends". Best wishes to Coach Dulaney, Jordan and the Yorktown team on the rest of the season. Rest assured they will be ready to go!! Positively Promote the Sport!! Steve Sandefer
  13. Interesting topic on takedowns....what about career wins by active wrestlers? Does anyone have current all time top wins list they could post?
  14. We took a mixed group of about 40 to Wings Etc to watch the Midlands finals on the Big Ten Network. Our usual Mishawaka group was there with friends from East Noble, Hobart, Prairie Heights, we even had some good folks from Anderson Highland who came into town just to watch some wrestling join us. We had a great time! But when do you not....when Larry March is present!
  15. We did in fact move into the Mishawaka School district prior to Steven's Sophomore year. Yes you are right, there were and are people who feel it is their right, obligation, even duty to involve themselves in other people's business. At that time we were open to every opinion imaginable involving our personal family decision. At the time it was not a pleasant experience to go through. It is true, at times like those you find out who your real friends are.....and about the one's that groundhog refers to above. Now after having a few years to reflect on our decision, we love our new home and we very much enjoy being a part of the Mishawaka community. For our family, it was a great decision. Now I would like to tell you a true story about our moving experience. The only reason I will tell this story now is because the young man in the story has graduated and is now studying to be a Doctor I believe at Notre Dame or Northwestern. Outstanding young man, nice family. Before we actually made the move, the first thing I did was to contact the IHSAA and informed them of our intentions, outlined the procedure and timeline and verified that everything we were planning on doing was confirmed as being in compliance with guidelines and rules. After doing so, we moved into a townhouse in the School District of Mishawaka, while the plans for the new house were finalized prior to the start of construction in the summer precededing Steven's sophomore year. As you know, High School football on a friday night is a special night. Steven would drive home after school, get a bite to eat, pack his game gear and then head back to school, his routine would have him coming and going about the same time each week and he would always leave wearing his game jersey. Now the family that lived right next door to us also had a son that played football. He was a Senior that year and a key player on the team. Both boys appeared to have pretty much the same routine, often coming and going within minutes of each other or at the same time. This went on through the entire season, week in and week out same routine. Now you have to be asking or saying big deal....what is the point of your story? The point is this. We made a family decision to move to Mishawaka and be a part of this community and we took every precaution to make sure we were doing things the right way. But it did not really matter, as groundhog pointed out we were called out, criticized, accused and tryed in public forums on both the wrestling and the football boards by everyone that had an opinion, here close to home and throughout the state. And every Friday night as my son would leave his Mishawaka home, wearing his Mishawaka jersey.....I would watch the young man who lived right next door to us leave his Mishawaka School District home wearing a game jersey that was not Mishawaka's. It would have been very easy, maybe even gratifiying with everything our family was getting thrown at them, to get even if you will, with the school where most of our grief was coming from. Even though we were frustrated with the abuse we were taking at the time, it just would not have been the right thing to do. This young man went on to have a great season for "his school" and graduated that year at the top of his class. I have tried to be very careful not to give too much detail to protect this young man and his family, many can fill in the blanks possibly with the individual or the school, but please don't on this forum, that is not the purpose of this story. All I'm saying is I agree with groundhog...there are situations that occur that we do not need to try to be judge and jury over in public forums. The situation with Trenton and his family is a tough situation. For those of you that need confirmation, I can look out my back window across the pond and see the new house they had built. It stands dark and empty, because thier house still has not sold. Let's be careful not to judge a family caught up in a tough economic housing situation. Positively Promote the Sport Steve Sandefer
