I believe there was a 5 pound allowance (132+5=137). I heard he missed that by 7 pounds. 137+7=144.

How does this work since Illinois has 3 divisions? Is it Illinois (2A/3A) vs. Indiana 1 and Illinois (1A) vs. Indiana 2?

BigCardinal141 reacted to Rookies03 in You be the ref... was this an escape?
Most refs will not award an escape if the wrestler in control maintains both hands around the leg tight. If the hands come off or are just loosely holding on at any point then the ref will usually "hold" the escape until the situation ends in case a reversal happens. Even if the offensive wrestler regains control of the leg the escape is still usually given unless the offensive wrestler regains complete control.

These are obviously tough situations as kids are getting better and better at scrambling.

And I am not giving my opinion as to whether or not the escape should have been called but rather just offering some insight as to how these situations get called. Hope it helps a little.

Da Region guy will be the one parking the 1986 Olds Cutlass with the White Sox hat in the back window next to ClownBaby's Audi...real close!

I thought about this some more and it makes total sense. Coaches already make a ton of money for coaching and they are probably teachers which means they are in the high roller category so they really should pay for their first day also.

Personally, I love the fact that Indiana wrestling is not classed. It makes us extremely unique and exciting. I've seen numerous State Championship tournaments from other states and none are as exciting as Indiana or California. The only classed state that is even close is Iowa (mainly because wrestling takes over Des Moines for the weekend). It's a special thing to have ONE State Champion for each weight and ONE State Championship Team. Please do not water it down! I also know it helps our student-athletes get recruited. College coaches from across the country scout our state tourny due to the fact that it is one class. Kids get serious D2, D3, NAIA looks for placing or qualify.

In my opinion, wrestling is losing participation bc of generational obstacles and priorities that school, parents, and coaches need to address (I know it's a struggle). Indiana programs need to focus on building numbers, rivalries and Free/Greco. When Indiana starts bringing home 30+ All-Americans from Fargo, then it may be time to reevaluate. EVERY WRESTLER HAS ENOUGH RESOURCES IF THEY WANT IT ENOUGH...ONE CLASS ONE CHAMP!

That was just one example, I can think of a number of smaller schools that have always been able to compete with the larger schools. If I can win against everyone, why would I want to enter a tournament with lesser opponents and be given a consolation prize when I could have won it all?

Oh... that's right, this is America, so we need to help the needy and disadvantaged so everyone is equal. Why give out 1 trophy when we can give out 3 or 8 or 15? So St. Mary Catholic School for the Blind can receive a bid for the 1A State Tournament, throw a big party in the local square which leads to a rejuvenated excitement for the sport of wrestling. Now everyone at the school wants to wrestle and all of our problems are solved.

Div. 1 basketball should develop 2 or 3 more levels so a school like Butler can compete. I'm sure March Madness' popularity has nothing to do with the 'underdog' or 'Cinderella' stories. I know, I know, we are talking about Butler and they can recruit all across the country and I am comparing apples and oranges, but can't we do some 'recruiting' in our own communities? I'm not saying small school coaches/wrestlers/parents/fans don't care about competing - but if we were really driven by 'making the sport better' - does the state tournament make the difference?

I'll end here because I am sure most of you have tuned out. I work to make the sport better because I am convinced it is one of the best tools to help young men develop. I know they can experience things through the sport that they will not experience elsewhere. If the state tournament changes, it won't make me any more or less motivated to get young men and children involved in the sport. A trophy or title has never been the motivation and if that has become our motivation, maybe we have found the real problem with the sport.
