I would like to apologize as we have helped make it easy to know everything about Indiana wrestling. Maybe we should require Rakestraw to listen to Gorilla Radio.

I know I'll get pelted with empties from any poster that starts with "SW" and I respect Mr. Goebel (sic) immensely, but maybe it's time to put a third guy on the show? And might I recommend @ontherise219 for that position? Now hear me out....

How many times last night did he mention "I'm not familiar with that wrestler..." or "IndianaMat ranks him...". Well, the actual ranker does some media stuff for the actual sight that does the rankings oft quoted, and since he does the rankings pretty well it appears, he does seem to know a bit about most/all the wrestlers and not just the ones at the E'ville SS. Again, nothing personal, and as far as the actual call of the finals matches goes I think Mr. Goebel is great and knows his stuff and adds insight, but for a parings show I'd just like to hear a bit more insight/matchups etc and think OTR could provide that. Of course the hour and fifteen minute time frame might be tough but he wouldn't have @Y2CJ41 to throw him off topic.

Like I said, unpopular opinion.. but outside of the ESS dudes there just didn't seem to be much insight or info put out there except "that should be a good quarter bracket".

    There...I said it.

This is Justice Cash and after losing 4 times at semi-state I am coming on here to share the story that I never was able to share after winning a state title... The dog tag in the picture has been in my shoe for every wrestling match since Amante Young's death... He was a brother to me and there was nothing I wanted to do more than win a state title for him and his memory. He died tragically in a car crash a few months after winning a state title in Michigan. For those who knew Amante you would know he was one of the sweetest, joyful, and kind hearted people you've ever met. He was always smiling and brought so much joy to others, he always had my back, and he always wanted to make himself better. His home life was never amazing but he still was always trying to make money to give gifts to his whole family during holidays and other occasions even knowing he wouldn't be getting any from his parents at times. He always wanted to help people and he never acted like he was bound to be unsuccessful because of his home life, he found ways to make himself better and others around him better. I could go on and on about how amazing Amante was as a person and a wrestler and about how much he meant to me and so many others, but here is the end and the end of my high school career. I would be so grateful if anyone who reads this would mention his name in my place after winning a state title this year because I have failed to make it there for him myself... Thank you...

gtodrivr reacted to Y2CJ41 in Article: Fishers, Indiana Native wins Super 8 Invitational
Platteville Wis.-   University of Wisconsin-Plattville sophomore Alexander Strueder (Fisher, Indiana) scored a takedown in sudden victory to win the 157 pound championship in the annual Super 8 Invitaional in the Pioneers’ Williams Fieldhouse.
With the score tied 3-3  late in the third period, Strueder needed a take down due to the point for riding time that Jessy Diaz of the University of Dubuque would have been rewarded.  Stueder got the take down and what was thought to be for the championship as time ran out.   The officials got together and determined that Strueder let go of Diaz with one second on the clock and rewarded Diaz with a point for escaping and the extra point for riding time to force sudden victory period.
Starting in neutral position, Stueder made short work as the aggresser in the sudden victory  period recording the takedown 10 seconds into the period to officaly be crowned the champion.
“Coach (Mike) DeRoehn always preaches to fight your butt off, how hard can you fight. I gave up a takedown early, but came back and got the takedown with a second left, going in to overtime I knew I was prepared, we been working our butts off in the (wrestling) room,”  Strueder said. “I knew I had an opportunity to go out there and make a statement and not leave it in the hands of the officials and take the match in my hands.  I went back to what was working for me, my double underhooks, and took him down and that was the match.”
“Mindset was the difference maker for Strueder today. Throughout the tournament, he did a great job of listening to the coaches and then executed some crucial in-match technical adjustments,” DeRoehn said.  “It was outstanding to see him keep his composure under pressure in the championship match and we’re really proud of his fight out there today.”

gtodrivr reacted to Dave Cloud in Thanks for everything, Coach Hasseman
Franklin Community High School and the Franklin Wrestling Club have announced the retirement of Coach Bob Hasseman from the head coaching position for the Grizzly Cubs. Bob's time as head coach has brought great success for FCHS: His teams won 18 IHSAA Sectional, 11 Regional, 8 Semi-State, 18 County and 17 Conference team titles. The Grizzly Cubs were 2014 IHSAA runners-up and won the 2014 Coaches Association team title. Five Grizzly Cubs claimed individual titles during his tenure, along with numerous other place winners. In addition, Coach Hass was a dedicated freestyle official and the driving force behind the Franklin Wrestling Club.
More importantly, Bob has been a great representative for our sport. He built his program the right way and his kids always wrestled with a lot of grit. They won with class (a lot) and lost with dignity. Coach has been a great coaching colleague to many. I am very appreciative of his friendship and will miss seeing him in the corner. I wish Bob and his wife a wonderful retirement and all the things he had to put aside for all these years. This doesn't even take into account putting up with Chris Lynch all those years!
Bob, your efforts have made Indiana High School Wrestling better.  Thanks!

gtodrivr reacted to Dave Cloud in NFHS looking to reduce weight classes
Agree with Joe. Cutting weight classes won't solve the problem. I know it is difficult, time consuming, often frustrating and not what we should have to do as coaches, in a perfect world. In a perfect world 50 to 60 kids would show up every year after putting in a vigorous off-season of hard work. But that's not the world we live in. I try to talk to at least one kid each day who is not in my program about going out for wrestling. We normally have close to 50 wrestlers, sometimes more, to start the season. Some of them drop out since we have a larger number of newbies but we normally end up well over 40 on the roster by Sectional. Barry Humble got huge numbers at Adams Central. It was then a very small school. It will never be easy to get large numbers but it is worth the effort.
Let's point this discussion in a new direction. Let's hear from the coaches with solid numbers what you do to build the program.
    1) As I said in my post, try to talk to at least one kid per day from the start of school until season starts (over 50 days) and from the end of the season until the end of school (about another 55). Often I will speak to the same kid several times but with all those contacts it is hard not to get at least a few extra recruits each season.
    2) Coaching another sport can help. I coached high school football for over 30 years and then moved to middle school four years ago (love the shorter season that ends before Fall break!). Our middle school numbers have jumped since I get to pump the sport every day (Wow, that was a great tackle. I bet you would have a mean double leg.)
    3) We have a bowling party every year after County tournament. I get a cheap trophy with a wrestler and a bowling pin on it.
    4) I make sure to get the cut lists from freshman and middle school basketball teams. We also encourage middle school basketball players to come out after the season (got IHSAA fifth and sixth place finishers that way).
    5) I send a letter to every eighth grade wrestler welcoming them to our summer program, encouraging them to play a fall sport and try to meet up with them at the start of their freshman year. Next season I am sending a recruiting e-mail to the student e-mail account of ever Why incoming freshman student (girls and boys).
    6) Get your kids exposure whenever possible. We name a Wrestler of the Meet on announcements (thanks Q!), nominate them for school programs (we have two on the Student Athletic Council), make sure to get your kids Academic All-State recognition. I make sure to fill out the recommendation forms for National Honor Society for each wrestler nominated. The Marines now have an academic certificate for wrestlers.
There are more but I want to hear what you guys are doing. If you ever get a chance, talk to Danny Struck about building a program. His numbers are amazing and he builds a true sense of belonging for his kids. We don't need to get to 50 on the roster to succeed. If you currently have 15 and get to 20 that is big. Add one or two a year and you will have a sizable roster pretty quickly. Let's stop waiting for our ship to come in and swim out to it!

Coach Holden and I are proud to announce that we will be taking our rivalry to Hoosier Gym, the home of the fictional Hickory Hoosiers in the iconic 1986 film Hoosiers. The date is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The gym last regularly hosted meets in the late 1960's before Knightstown moved to their current facility. The Panthers have wrestled Eastern Hancock in the facility in recent seasons. NineStar will help us make history by doing the first ever telecast of a wrestling meet from the facility. Coach Holden and I are working on some ideas to make the event even more special. Hope you can join us for this special evening. Stay tuned for future announcements.
