  6. After a great weekend of wrestling at ISWA state, there will no doubt be a drop off in participation. The average wrestler was done in February. The above-average wrestler takes a break in May. But there are unique group of dedicated wrestlers who are truly looking to take it to the next level. These are the athletes that will continue to strive for greatness and train year-round. They will be in attendance tonight, and they will also be the majority of the guys that make the biggest stride next season. With that said, if you are looking to continue training, come out to Warren Central's RTC tonight from 6p to 8p. Whether you are preparing for Central Regionals, FILAs, Schoolboy Duels, Cadet Duels, Junior Duels, or Fargo, Warren's RTC is the place to be in East-Central Indiana on Wednesdays. Elite training opportunities are harder to come by at this time of year so it is important to take advantage of everything you can to ensure you give yourself the best possibilities. Even if it isn't here, definitely make your way to any and all RTCs you can. Please enter Door 14 and come ready for great, FREE, session as Indiana prepares to make our mark on the USAW/FILA schedule! See you in a minute!
  7. Don't miss out on another great opportunity to train for ISWA Freestyle and Greco State @ Warren Central's RTC! If you haven't been at least once then you are missing out on a very competitive and decorated room, great clinicians, hard work, world class facility and a fun time! RTC's will go all summer for the variety of state, regional and local tournaments left, most notably the FILAS, Cadet & Junior Duels, and Fargo - so there will be other opportunities. Still, because of the importance of the ISWA F & G tournament, if you truly want to beat the best then you have to train and compete with the best. Warren Central's RTC provides a perfect FREE opportunity for your wrestler to train with some of the best in Central Indiana. Be sure to stop by tomorrow, Wednesday, from 6p - 8p to find out why! Please enter Door 14 and the wrestling room is upstairs in the field house next to the weight room. Bring your USAW card, wrestling gear, will power and get ready to push past your limits. Best wishes this weekend and we'll see you tomorrow!
  8. It's going down tonight! Warren RTC from 6p-8p! Last week was awesome with multiple state champs, collegiate wrestlers, and overall studs training for greatness. Tonight will be more of the same as we typically average 60+ wrestlers getting after it. We will be training Freestyle and Greco as our Indiana guys get ready for ISWA F/G, Central Regionals, Southeast Regionals, Cadet and Junior Duels, and Fargo! If you are interested in a FREE all-star training session with some of the state and country's best, make your way to the East side of Indianapolis tonight to Warren's Regional Training Center. Enter door 14 and come ready to roll!
  9. Parents take their kids out of state for better/more competition. So the issue to me is simply getting more kids to wrestle in Indiana. Desperate times call for desperate measures: Class Indiana wrestling. I for one was extremely against this idea as the ONLY state champion my year. This was something I held my head up high about, was proud of when comparing Indiana to other states, and especially wrestling another classed state champ from around the country after I tech fall him. Now, as our beautiful sport is declining in a multiple areas, for the past two or three years I have begun to change my tune. We can all agree the world is changing and I fear if we don't adapt we will get left behind. I do not believe classing wrestling is the cure-all, but I do think it will make a huge difference in regards to participation across the board. The quantity will push the quality. And for those hard-up, maybe have a Tournament of Champions where all the champs can wrestle each other. My theory: it is true the coach's efforts to push the sport (folkstyle, freestyle and greco) plays a significant part in wrestling throughout the year. But a coach can only do so much. Success breeds success. I have seen coaches at small schools bang their heads against the wall to build a top level program. But without the tools, money, athletes, admin support, excitement, success, etc...they know they their attempts are futile, especially when compared to the Perry Meridians and Apple Valleys of the world. The best they can do is just that - their best. Get a few studs down to state, maybe fill a full roster, etc. It's all relative but the success is limited. On the other hand, Adams Central just recently won the team state title for their class. I'm not sure of the previous level of support wrestling had at the school between the administrators, athletes, etc. But I would be willing to bet $1 that this support and recognition went up after their state title. AS A COACH, this also makes it easier to both recruit and keep kids around more because of the success. Consequently, i feel if Indiana were to class individual wrestling, this would create the same effect. Of course this is easier said than done and I understand I am in the minority here. But I do think this will help our participation numbers across the state, as well as putting more people in the stands, when more programs and wrestlers get a chance to gain some real recognition. In the grand scheme of things not everyone will win a state title anyway, and in college state title's don't even matter. Most coaches I know, if not all of them, fell short of their competitive goals as well. My thoughts are, as a coach, our real goal is to use the sport to help our athletes become positive members of society as most will fall short of greatness. But the pursuit of greatness is still the goal. Now, with that said, in regards to the original post, I believe that when we have more wrestlers participating in the sport, and more kids achieving success, we will have more kids wrestling in the summer. And when we have more kids wrestling in the summer, we can afford to have kids wrestling in-state, out-of-state, etc. Are coaches vital to a wrestler and programs success? Absolutely. But putting the responsibility solely on the shoulders of the coaches is unfair, especially if they have inherited small numbers, unsupportive admin, unwilling parents, wrong school culture, etc. It would be interesting to see the numbers of other states regarding pre- vs. post-classing? Lastly, and maybe someone can help me out here, but a shortened F&G season is detrimental to their growth. Obviously extending the F&G season would help. Keeping in the mind IOC decisions could ultimately make or break F&G in the U.S. for good I fear, why is it that we cannot hold Folkstyle state a week or two after IHSAA state? Nevertheless, just my 2 cents. Stay blessed guys....
  10. Great practice last night fellas! Multiple state champions, placers, semi-state qualifiers, collegiate athletes, etc. were in attendance all looking to take it to the next level. Be sure to hit as many RTC's as you can to train with the best. At no other time throughout the year do wrestlers have FREE access to the caliber of training partners than when training at an ISWA RTC. Best wishes this weekend Indiana wrestlers and we'll see you next week!
  11. Another great night of training this evening @ Warren Central's RTC! Last week we rolled with 50+ wrestlers, representing over a dozen schools, and featuring some of the top competitors in the state and country. Tonight's session will be more of the same as we prepare for Franklin's Iron Man, Cadet World Team Trials, and the other F&G tournaments coming up. If you are looking for an extremely competitive room, some of the state's top clinicians, and a world class facility - look no further than the RTC @ Warren Central. 6p-8p. Enter Door 14 and the wrestling room is on the 2nd floor of the field house next to the weight room. See you in a minute!
  12. Looking forward to a great night of training @ Warren Central tonight! We will be covering some Greco and mostly Freestyle tonight, particularly working on implementing successful habits in both styles sure to help our wrestlers achieve a higher degree of success, both locally and nationally. If you are looking for a competitive room at an A1 facility in Indianapolis area, then look no further than Warren Central's RTC tonight from 6p-8p. Enter @ Door 14. See you in a minute!
  13. Freestyle and Greco-Roman are finally here! No more Folkstyle, for the most part. I know our Indiana Pride kids are excited about F&G now, as they get a chance to mix it up and still be on the mat. This post isn't for anything other than to 1) impress upon everyone the need to wrestle Freestyle and Greco, and 2) start planting seeds for participating in the F&G tournaments coming up. General Freestyle & Greco participation: Although the IOC's decision to possibly eliminate wrestling from the Olympics is EXTREMELY discouraging, it is still vital to a wrestler's success to participate in these styles as much as possible. It is more than proven that Freestyle and Greco helps develop Folkstyle wrestling. Personally, I was 3rd string my freshman year in high school. I loved the sport but I simply didn't know enough wrestling to be as successful as I knew I could be. That summer, I found and wrestled in every F&G tournament I could. I got in close to 100 matches and, not only was I varsity next year, I ended up getting 7th in the state. That next summer I wrestled as much F&G as I could again and I won the IHSAA State Championship. Another year of F&G and I graduated ranked 3rd in the country. I use this same philosophy and blueprint in my coaching as I make all of our Indiana Pride Wrestling Academy members train and compete in F&G. Deondre Wilson is a perfect example. Only wrestled for three years and won the IHSAA State Title this past year. How so good so fast? F&G. He followed the same routine, with close to 100 matches each summer, and a state title in only his 3rd year was the result. 100 matches is almost 2 or 3 seasons worth of wrestling by H.S. standards, so when the next year starts he is that much further developed than the average or seasonal wrestler. Sure, results vary, rules change, etc. etc. But, for the record, wrestling Freestyle and Greco during the summer IS NOT the same as wrestling Folkstyle year-round. Mat time is mat time, and the more you get the better your chances. But F&G teaches, or EMPHASIZES, certain skills that get lost in the shuffle of Folkstyle: positioning, throws, awareness, etc. The fact of the matter is the more your wrestler competes in F&G, the better their chances of success come Folkstyle season. Nevertheless, hopefully we have a great turnout the rest of the summer at our F&G tournaments. I cannot think of one of Indiana's best (Sliga, Tsirtsisx2, Howe, Escobedo, Hasseman, Dolly, etc. etc. etc.) that did not try and take these styles to the max. What better way to show your support of "Saving Wrestling in the Olympics" than participating in the Olympic styles? Freestyle & Greco-Roman Competitions In that same spirit, we have some great local, regional, and national tournaments still left for Indiana to make their mark. Not only do we have awesome local F&G events coming up, but hopefully our Indiana wrestlers will compete in more F&G events regionally and nationally. Central Regionals in Indiana=Great tournament. Schoolboy Duels =Great tournament. Fila World Team Trials in Akron=Great tournament. Southeast Regionals in Atlanta=Great Tournament. Of course there are countless others. The big events I'd like to see more of Indiana's best? Cadet Duels in Daytona Beach, Junior Duels in OKC, and of course the Nationals in Fargo. Personally, when I wrestled, our national dual teams were absolutely LOADED with talent. Not only where there State Champs, but we would have multiple 2x and 3x Champs on there as well. It was a PRIVILEGE competing for INDIANA, not just individual success, in an effort to win a National Title. It will be a good day in Indiana when we have our best on those teams. This year I am fortunate enough to be helping out more with the ISWA and my goal is to WILL ourselves to a higher degree of success. This means higher expectations, higher quality techniques, etc. I'm just one person and these are just my random thoughts, because I am so glad to have the F&G season upon us. So this post is just one of my efforts to help fuel the fire for Indiana to take it to the next level across the board. Best wishes the rest of the summer. Train hard. Perform harder.
  14. Warren Central's RTC will be in full effect tonight as we fine tune for the USAW Folkstyle Nationals and Flo Nationals this weekend. Be sure to come out for national caliber competition, world class facility, and a fun environment. Please enter through door 14 on the north side of the school and the wrestling room is in the field house, second floor, right next to the weight room! See you soon!
  15. Just wondering what trends you see or have seen in the NCAA tournament, if any, that we should take a better look at as an individual, program and/or state? Whether we are noticing more or less aggressiveness, re-shots, better scrambling, certain attacks, funk, basics, bottom wrestling, top series, etc. etc. As the finals approach, what trends, techniques, etc. have made the biggest impression on you?
  16. Looking to train like madmen?! Getting ready for this weekend's tournament? Want to prepare for Iowa? Just wanna roll? Come out to Warren Central's RTC tonight from 6p - 8p to train hard and have fun. I will be running practice this evening so you know we will be getting it in. If you don't know, come see what all the fuss is about! Enter @ Door 14, Room is upstairs of field house by weight room. See you there!
  17. Going out of state. I have a theory, and I'm all for Indiana Pride, but look at the numbers. There's more to it of course (grassroots, coaching, socio-economics, etc.) but it's not surprising.
  18. All RTC's are available for any wrestler with a current USAW card.
  19. Great night last night, with over 65 wrestlers training hard for the upcoming ISWA Folkstyle State and USAW Folkstyle Nationals. Be sure to make it in next Wednesday for another competitive night of high quality wrestling! Have a great rest of the week and best wishes this weekend to everyone competing!
  20. Yes, a school must be approved to become an RTC. There was an issue in year's past where everyone was claiming to host a Regional Training Center, but many were not sanctioned. Officially, a Regional Training Center is sponsored by USAW and the ISWA, and all participants must have a USAW card. The ISWA has begun to make the necessary adjustments to help better facilitate this process and operation (the amount of RTCs in Indiana, the curriculum, attendence, clincians, etc) and you will begin to see the changes this year. More information is coming on that soon. Officially there are only 18 schools that are approved to be an RTC and, for the reason you brought up, chances are this number will decline after this summer. For more information, Rex Peckinpaugh oversees the RTCs for the ISWA.
  21. It's official. Starting tomorrow Warren Central High School will now host a 2013 Regional Training Center at their world class facility! Home of multiple local and national wrestling events, Warren Central is located east of Indianapolis off of I-70 and Post Road. Please enter through Door 14 and the Wrestling facility is upstairs by the weight room, overlooking the field house. Practice will be held Wednesdays from 6p - 8p and traditionally will cover USAW Core Curriculum, advanced Technique, great competition and will feature some of Indiana's best clinicians. With ISWA Folkstyle State, Scholastic Duals, Folkstyle Nationals, Flo Nationals, Cadet World Team Trials, Cadet National Duals, Junior National Duals, Fargo, and a variety of local tournaments in between, all ISWA Regional Training Centers are one of the necessary places to train in order to get to that next level - including this one. Please have your USAW card and come ready to roll! Warren Central High School Door 14 9500 E. 16th Street Indianapolis. 46229

  23. 1000% yes. More than proven. The issue this year, with lower than average turnout in years past, is will participation continue to decline with the new IOC announcement. Either way, there is no substitute for mat time in the summer. Best wishes to your wrestler!
  24. Given the Olympics only comes once every four years, added to the success (or lack of) the United States had in comparison to the rest of the world, and with the upcoming H.S. season, I was interested in how this event has changed the perception of Freestyle/Greco/Folkstyle in the Indiana wrestling community...if any. Thanks and best wishes this season!
