Im just transitioning from high school to college wrestling . And as we all know or have heard , one of the most common problems most freshman have . Is getting away from bottom , im wondering is that due to the fact of the way we are taught . from a young age to get out on bottom .  Is it about the exploding and getting off the whistle or is there more of a technical side to it . Im trying to take a poll for class for a paper  so it would be greatly appreciated if you could leave a respose with your wrestling experience , such as head coach ... 10 yrs experience and so on .

is exploding up right off the whistle what u teach , or back pressure hand fighting etc the main focus ?

Not every kid is going to be explosive from the bottom no matter how much you preach it. IMO bottom is about attitude, mastering about 6 or 7 skills/positions, and learning to string them together to create space. What you should be looking for are chains ( combinations ) to get hip separation and a neutral angle in your back. As a side note, I'm one of those coaches who is not overly concerned with hand control on stand-ups. In short, I think it's important to teach a lot of bottom wrestling. Folkstyle is a pretty simple equation: If you can't get taken down, and you can't be ridden, you can't lose. In other words, if you maintain solid neutral position, handfight well, and wrestle smart on your feet; and you cannot be ridden easily, you'll have a chance to win every single match.
