Notes from IU vs Penn State

Recommended Posts

Good crowd. Strangler rocking the purple argyle.

197 - missed it sorry. Looks like it was a major.

285

Chalfant v Lawson

Chalfant looks good. Again starting to gas a little at the end of the 2nd. Nice double can't finish. Got the win but gassed hard. IMO if Adam's conditioning peaks at nationals he could wreck that bracket.

125

Mega get's the forfeit - no Duca again.

133

Caton v Gulibon

Caton is getting killed on bottom. 1st period tech fall? Unacceptable. Jimmy Gulibon is not that good. Looked like he gave up.

141

Moody v Retherford

Why not Raley?  All Zane, Moody trying not to get teched. Retherford really tortures guys with a figure 4. Retherford by near death experience.

149

Roach v Beitz (no Andrew Alton, probably still gassed from the match with Nelsen)

Roach showing tripod stance a lot. In on a single can't finish. 0-0 after 1 Beitz goes down. Roach trying to ride. Beitz out in 25 seconds. Roach allowing Beitz to hand on his head, not working angles much even when Beitz is on both knees in front of him. It sure looks like he could have ran down some points there. Roach goes down and get's ridden hard. IU cannot ride and they can't get up. Beitz rides him out and wins 2-0.

157

Walsh v Vollrath (backup. No Dylan Alton either)

Vollrath right in on a HC, walsh scrambles but gives up the TD. Walsh working front quarter and get's away on the edge 2-1. Nice throwby Walsh can't finish and it's reversed on replay 3-2 Walsh and puts on the stall ride to finish the 1st. ? chooses neutral. Walsh grinding a 2on1 and controlling Vollrath's trail hand a lot. Walsh looks defensively lazy to me and get's in to funky positions. Walsh goes down get's the reversal 5-2. Walsh working a stall ride and get's reversed. Wins 5-4.

165

Leblanc v DT

Ryan get's hurt early. Left wrist? DT takes top off of ijury time, get's the tilt for 2, Leblanc called for stalling in less than a minute. 3 pt NF. Leblanc laying flat and balling up. 5-0 after 1 Leblanc chooses neutral. Snap front head, with little effort to square 7-0. Leblanc totally balling up and stalling on bottom. Get's crabbed for 2 swipes after restart twice 11-0 after 2nd DT takes top. Why not? 15-0.

174

Irick v Brown (why not Jackson?)

Irick holding his own in the handfighting. Good effort, good scrambling, no riding, just overmatched with Brown. 12-3 Brown

184

Sheridan v Ruth

Comes out aggressive, in on a single can't finish. Good effort. Ruth too much. 16-3 after 2. 18-3 TF.

Again, you can't judge the team too much from a win/loss standpoint in this dual. Having said that, the lack of effort in this dual was palpable. IU, for the most part, rolled over in front of a good crowd and squandered a perfect opportunity build a lot of fan interest in the team. If you want people to follow your team, you need to have a good product. I'm confident that fans, win or lose, would get behind a scrappy team with the balls to go out and fight the best team in the country. Everyone knew they were going to take an ass-whooping from PSU, but to go out like that.. with the college wrestling world and potential future recruits watching... was pathetic. This is the Big10 Goldman. Get your team ready to fight hard or get out.

Other than that, the things that stick out to me are; an inability to ride when needed, low effort on bottom, not looking to score defensively, flat footed and hanging in the ties. What is the full story on Duca, Raley, Jackson?

The last I heard Duca hurt his knee while warming up for the NW dual. I guess Shepherd is hurt too? Behind them is a couple Freshman. Sean Brown, and Jon Edwards is on redshirt.
