  1. I think grecoref is right on the money on some of the issues. My sons were lucky enough to have one of the nation's premier national greco coaches as their local club wrestling coach when we lived in Minnesota. All 3 of my sons wrestled greco, freestyle and folkstyle their whole wrestling careers from beginner youth through high school. When we moved to Indiana we were shocked at the low level of participation in freestyle and the abysmal participation levels for greco. Here is what I have heard and my responses. : "The rules for freestyle and greco keep changing. It is too hard to learn them." A: Really?! To me this is a lazy person's excuse. If you are passionate about a sport and want to be the best, understanding the rules should be important enough for you to be willing to learn and keep learning as needed. "There are so many throws... it looks dangerous." A: Just like when you learned folkstyle or any other martial art you learn how to fall (or how not to fall) and that decreases the chance of injury. I personally have seen more injuries from power halfs to shoulders and knee injuries from shots in folkstyle then I have seen injuries from throws in freestyle or greco. "I want my kid/athlete to wrestle only folkstyle because that's what they wrestle in college." A: College coaches I have spoken with look for wrestlers who have wrestled all 3 styles. 97% of all high school national champions wrestle all 3 styles. If you as a parent or a coach truly want your child/athlete to be an elite wrestler then have them wrestle all 3 styles.
  2. Penn H.S. has a total of 5 wrestlers who signed to wrestle in college this year. Current College Signing list - http://www.indianamat.com/class-of-2011-college-signings/2011/06/ Only one of the five wrestlers is listed on the college signing list. (Listed) Alex Gregory H.S. - Penn College - Indiana Tech, IN Projected Weight - 141 ------------------------ (Not Listed) Grant Anglemyer H.S. - Penn College - Manchester College, IN Projected Weight - 149-157 Tyler Chapple H.S. - Penn College - Concordia College, MN Projected Weight - 125 Sarah Hildebrandt H.S. - Penn College - King College, TN Projected Weight - 116 Michael Hummer H.S. - Penn College - Ashland University, OH Projected Weight - 157 Does anyone know of other College signings from other Indiana High Schools for this year not on the list?
  3. I disagree because this would involve the creation a of a NEW state wide governing athletic association specifically for ON CAMPUS participation. IMO the IHSAA behaves the way it does because it is the only group around, however it it was not the only group they would have to change their behavior or risk losing all sports to another governing body. A new athletic association or not or using other wrestling groups such as USA or HYWAY something must be done to continue a team state tourney IMO.
  4. Modified the lead post to focus the thread....
  5. I think last season's Team State was the final one.
  6. Since the IHSAA no longer hosts a high school team state tourney can't a team tourney be created fully separate and apart from the IHSAA? The tourney could be held immediately following the high school season. If the IHSAA is not meeting the needs of the high school wrestling programs it may be time to for a group independent from the IHSAA. For example - an entirely new athletic association could be formed just for high school wrestling. Between the upcoming loss of Team State, the ruling against wild cards for the Al Smith tourney and with all of the complaints I have seen on here about the IHSAA not seeming to be in touch with the other needs and desires of the high school wrestling community is it time to form a new athletic association for high school wrestling in Indiana?
  7. Some states seem to be able to work it out just fine to allow middle schoolers to wrestle at the high school level. Many of these same states also allow middle schoolers to compete at other h.s. varsity sports beyond wrestling. Does that mean every middle school wrestler is ready to move up? No, of course not. But there are elite middle schoolers who could benefit from further developing their skills in an environment with other wrestlers at their skill level. If an elite middle schooler has the skills that he/she could make a run at regions, semi-state or state at the high school level why not let them wrestle? I am for giving opportunities to those who have the skills to compete.
  8. There are likely a number of 7th and 8th graders who could easily compete at the high school level. Want an example? A Minnesota wrestler was a 7th grader (8th grader this coming fall) just won first place at a Michigan tourney against a high placing state wrestler from Indiana who I believe is a senior this coming season. This wrestler in Minnesota has a chance to become a 6 time High School State Champion. In Minnesota all 7th and 8th graders are eligible to compete at the high school level. IMO there are actually many extremely talented wrestlers who are fully skilled enough to compete.
  9. Sunday 12 o'clock match Penn Gold 43 wins over Westside WC (Florida) 23 Not certain... but the next match-up may be Penn Gold vs. Perry Falcons Blue at 6pm Can anyone confirm? Sure would be nice if the brackets were up.... (Sigh)
  10. What the heck is up with the tourney still not posting Friday's 6pm & 8pm results yet? Sheesh its Sunday already... Was there a 8pm on Saturday?
  11. Sunday 8am Penn Gold 43 over Collins Hill (Georgia) 19
  12. Match 7 - Penn Gold 34 wins over Mishawaka 18
  13. A. The team whose opposing wrestlers or team has been penalized the greater number of team points for flagrant or unsportsmanlike conduct shall be declared the winner. B. The team having won the greater number of matches (including forfeits) shall be declared the winner. Penalty points awarded against the opponents as first criteria? B would be a much better first choice! Disappointed NONE of the criteria included Falls/Pins (Only Tech Falls). Maybe the phrase "Pin to win" is not heard in Florida.
  14. I'm a strong supporter of woman's/girl's sports. I get extremely angry when the school's at all levels answer to equaling the playing fields is eliminating a men's/boy's sports program instead of expanding more opportunities for women's/girl's programs.
  15. Not sure either. Scores? Pins? Dang.. who knows!
  16. Match 6 - Penn Gold 75 wins vs. Gulf Coast Sharks (Florida) 0
  17. I know that feeling! It will be a good match... probably the best match of the day to see.
  18. Match 5 - Penn Gold scores 66 and wins vs. Northport Bobcats (Florida) 6
  19. Match 4 Penn Gold wins 30 vs. Oregon Clay (Ohio) 23
  20. Dang, ya posted them before me!
  21. Match 3 Penn Gold 56 over Beaver Creek (Ohio) 9
  22. Including Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan we could have had a really impressive regional tourney of 54 teams! A large regional team tourney is something that should be looked into!
  23. Round 1 match 2 - Penn Gold loses 25 to Michigan's Hartland Eagles 35
  24. Today's schedules & match times are now posted as PDF's on the results page. No results are posted yet though. http://www.aauwrestling.net/Results/NationalResults/ScholasticDuals.aspx For Div. 1 - http://www.aauresults.org/wrestling/Scholastic/2011/20111308936032.pdf For Div. 2 - http://www.aauresults.org/wrestling/Scholastic/2011/20111308936058.pdf
