  1. If they truly want to go on the trip, then they must earn an invitation to the camp. So their are only 3 chances left to earn an invitation; freestyle state, greco state, and the Central Regional. Honestly, if wrestlers choose not to participate at state finals because of this, I am not sure we would want them on the team anyway. The goal is to create a fair system that will allow team leaders to assemble the best team we possibly can. We felt it was time for a change and so it was made. We will evaluate the system after this year and make changed we think are necessary.
  2. 1. Just like the rest of the trips, camp is mandatory. If you do not come you do not go on the trip. This is consistent with the policy we have always used. 2. We have the camp right before the trip so training can be monitored to ensure the athletes are prepared. 3. The wrestlers aren't out $200. They just had the opportunity to train with the best wrestlers in the state under the eye of multiple college coaches from around the state. This is a great price in comparsion to what is being paid to attend other camps. 4. We are no where near having a committe select the team. I would be more than happy to, but I do not think everyone in the wrestling community would be happy with my selections!
  3. The ISWA has always wanted to create programs that were fair to all athletes. This objective is something that we want to protect. Our previous system qualified wrestlers for all duals teams based on their placement at Freestyle and Greco-Roman state finals. It did not account for the possibility of the two best wrestlers in the state being in the same weight class. In those cases we were not allowed to use the 2nd place finisher on our duals teams. The goal of this new format is to maintain a fair system, but provide more flexibility for athletes and coaches to put together the best team possible under the rules.
  4. 1. The petition process will work the same as it has in the past for Cadet/Junior Nationals. Wrestlers who are not able to compete at the state finals or do not qualify will need to write a letter to the Cadet Director (Jake Harreld) or Junior Director (Cale Hoover) requesting a spot in the camp. The two directors along with the team leaders for the trip will meet and decide on each petition. 2. Some wrestlers are already qualified for the camp based on past results, the rest will be qualifying the next few weeks. Any others interested should contake Jake Harreld or myself so we can make preparations. **** The goal of this qualifying camp is to continue to have a fair process in determining who will represent Team Indiana but also provide the participants and team leaders more flexibility in creating the best team possible. We would be happy to hear your feedback as we will continue working to be progressive and make improvements to our programs.
  5. Returning All-Americans: any wreslter who has placed in the top 8 at Cadet/Junior Nationals at any point in time. It will not matter which style. For example, if you are a Greco All-American you are invited to camp and can challenge for both styles.
  6. Cadet/Junior National Duals Selection Criteria 2010 To Attend the Camp, you must be invited. Automatic Camp Invites include: 1. 1st and 2nd place at ISWA Freestyle and Greco State 2. Returning All-Americans 3. Duals All-Tournament Selections from previous years 4. FILA National Place Winners (1st-6th) 5. Regional Place Winners (1st -4th) Additional Camp Invitations based on space and weight class needs: 6. Petitions 7. 3rd-6th at ISWA Freestyle & Greco State Finals Challenge Tournament: 1. Wrestlers must weigh-in at the beginning of camp and declare possible weight classes. At the end of the 2nd day, all wrestlers must declare their specific weight class for the challenge tournament. Cadets will get a 3 lb allowance and Juniors will get a 5 lb allowance. 2. The format of the challenge tournament will be similar to the US World and Olympic Team Trials. If the state champ stays at the same weight, he is automatically in the finals and must be beaten twice. All other wrestlers at that weight will compete in a tournament to see who will face the state champ. Camp and Trip Details Cost: $200 for camp Wrestlers who earn a spot on the team or who are selected to as alternates will have their camp fee applied as part of the trip cost. All wrestlers attending the camp must be willing and able to go on the trip, and pay the additional cost to cover part of the added expenses (bus, lodging, equipment, etc.) Wrestlers must weigh-in at the beginning of camp and declare possible weight classes. At the end of the 2nd day, all wrestlers must declare their specific weight class for the challenge tournament. Cadets will get a 3-pound allowance and Juniors a 5-pound allowance. Challenge Tournament The format will be similar to the US World and Olympic Team Trials. If the state champ stays at the same weight, he is automatically in the finals and must be beaten twice. All other wrestlers at that weight will compete in a tournament to see who will face the state champ.

  8. IHSWCA Members and Wrestling Community: As our schools resume after spending time away on Spring Break, it is time for the first off-season update for 2010. Congratulations to all of those who participated and placed in the national tournaments. Many Indiana wrestlers had outstanding performances and represented our state well. Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching you compete in the club season over the next few months. We have many important events coming up including an executive meeting with the IHSAA, the NWCA Scholastic Duals, the 18th Annual Spring Clinic, and Freestyle and Greco-Roman state finals as well as the USA Wrestling Central Regional. The IHSAA Executive board, including Trent McCormick, JD Minch, and myself, will be meeting with the IHSAA mid-April. Topics often vary, but I expect the topics to include the weight management program and integrity of the state tournament series. I know in conversation with Commissioner Cox the IHSAA has concerns with blatant violations of the weight management program. I have and will continue to stress to him the difficulties with the program. Rules and regulations need to be clarified and it must be made more time efficient. Second, there was alarm raised when matches were forfeited in the state tournament series with questions surrounding the reasons. We must be careful as coaches to insure the integrity of the tournament. I will update all of you on these topics and others discussed after the meeting. The 2010 NWCA Brute Scholastic Showcase will be held April 16th and 17th at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN. This tournament has been moved several times and now comes to Indiana. This is a great event and the IHSWCA is putting together a solid group of wrestlers to represent our state. If you get the opportunity stop by and check out the tournament. The Spring Clinic will be held at North Central HS on Friday, April 23rd at North Central HS featuring Dave Crowell head coach at Nazareth HS, PA. Coach Crowell has been named Pennsylvania coach of the year five times and the NWCA Coach of the Year in 2007. His teams have won eight state championships and he has coached fourteen individual state champions. I personally am excited to see a fellow high school coach who has built a national caliber program and maintained it for years. I hope to see all of you at the clinics. The IHSWCA would like to thank North Central HS and coach Lou Silverman for hosting the clinic. I have been following the debate on the merits of freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling on www.Indianamat.com. I am a big proponent of wrestling all styles. Wrestlers will benefit in multiple ways through participation the Olympic styles. First, these styles teach position. Ultimately, the wrestler who breaks position the fewest times will win. These styles demand position or you will give up points. Sometimes big points! I also think the change in style can help keep wrestlers fresh mentally and physically. I believe my wrestlers like these styles because our club and coaching staff embrace them. We look at these as an opportunity to do something special. We had our first All-American in Fargo last year, Sean Mappes, and I know we were all excited for his success. I challenge all of you to learn the rules and get your kids participating in these tournaments. These styles are a great way to seek out and find the best competition from around the country. Good luck. Sincerely, Cale Hoover IHSWCA President Head Coach, Center Grove HS
  9. I was an assistant at Highland before leaving for Hamilton Southeastern. I was at HSE for two years before coming to Center Grove. My wife worked at Center Grove and so we now live one mile from school which is great and was huge for the family now that we have twins.
  10. I wrestled with Anoine Neal in college. What an athlete! He wrestled at Purdue for a year and then made the football team and went to four bowl games. He was a freestyle/greco machine.
  11. The list above is not the final list. It was updated and corrected and the final list was announced at state finals.
  12. The IHSAA will not allow the IHSWCA to announce the scoring. You have to keep it yourself or stop by the association table on the floor where the score is being kept.
  13. One important thing is being overlooked in the discussion. The coach of the year award, assitant coach of the year award, and acadmic all-state are all sponsered by the IHSWCA. Thus, in order to win or nominate coaches/students for these awards the head coach of the school must be an association member. Some of the coaches mentioned may very well have been deserving but were not considered because they are not members. Unfortunatley, every year some students do not get recognized for academic all-state because their coaches do not join the IHSWCA.
  14. You are correct, I think I was thinking about the olden days way back in the '90s!
  15. The IHSWCA Regional Coach of the Year winners are listed below. They were selected by their peers in the coaching community. To be eligible to receive or vote for the award you were required to be an IHSWCA member. The Regional Representatives and the IHSWCA Exectutive Board then voted and chose the State Coach of the Year from this list. The winner is listed below. Regional 1: Steve Balash- Hobart Regional 2: Scott Vlink ? Crown Point Regional 3: Brad Harper - Penn Regional 4: Scott Vanderaa ? Harrison (West Lafayette) Regional 5: Mark Kerrn - Jimtown Regional 6: Randy Pursley - Homestead Regional 7: Andy Hobbs - Peru Regional 8: Trent McCormick - Yorktown Regional 9: Greg Gastineau ? 17. I am aware that the school closing around the state have made it difficult to submit nominations for Academic All-State. Please get these to me as soon as you can so I can begin the process. Coaches it is still not too late to join the association and nominate your deserving student-athletes. Cale Hoover hooverc1@centergrove.k12.in.us
  18. 2/8/10 IHSWCA Members and Wrestling Community: I believe the time has come for me to address several situations that have occurred over the past few weeks. We have seen blatant weight loss program violations, the integrity of our state tournament put in jeopardy, a weigh-in controversy, and sadly kids being eliminated from our tournament series without an opportunity to compete. The coaches association sits squarely in the middle of these controversies and we will stay strong and lead through these times. I am disappointed and upset that things have come to this, but I will work and do what I can to make things right. I obviously can make no promises, but we are working with the IHSAA. Coaches are obligated to help wrestlers develop into outstanding citizens and responsible adults. Winning of course is fun and great, but it is a byproduct of doing things right. I cringe when I hear stories of defaulting matches trying to get a better match-up the next week. We need to be mentors and role models for our wrestlers. Coaches, we must do a better job of following the weight loss program whether we like it or not. We will be working to make the system more user friendly, but we have people who knowingly violate the program. The situation at the Jay County Regional is unacceptable to me. This event should not have taken place. I will not cast blame because many factors went into the decision. We are working to try to give the student-athletes involved their opportunity. I can make no promises, but I hope a solution can be reached that is fair. Finally, I have heard and been told the IHSWCA does not care about small schools. I will repeat this until everyone listens and believes. I love wrestling and I care about all schools and wrestlers. I wrestled at Central Noble HS where the largest team we finished with in my four years had nine wrestlers. We won two dual meets in four years! After my junior year, our AD went to the school board and recommended the program be dropped. It was saved with a fight from the community, and I went on to wrestle at Purdue for two years. I came up short on my dream of being a state champion, but wrestling has taught me many lessons that have helped me get to where I am at today. The wrestling community must stick together stay the course in these tough times. If we ever want to improve our sport through the IHSAA we must conduct ourselves in a professional and ethical manner and stop making decisions that put wrestling in the crosshairs of the governing body. Sincerely Cale Hoover IHSWCA President Head Coach, Center Grove HS
  19. Coaches make sure if you have not joined the association do so this week. 1. On Saturday we will be voting for Regional coach of the year. You must be a member to vote or receive the award. 2. Assistant Coach of the year nomination forms are due Saturday as well. The nominating head coach must be a member. 3. Academic All-State forms are due by Wednesday, Feb. 10th. Coaches you must be a member to nominate your deserving student-athletes. I have been asked several times why you must be a member to participate in the programs listed above. The answer is each of these awards is sponsered by the coaches association. If the association did not exist neither would these awards. These are a few great examples of what the association provides its membership. Cale Hoover President, IHSWCa Head Coach, Center Grove HS
  20. 1/20/10 IHSWCA Members and Wrestling Community: I would like to wish everyone the best of luck as we enter the most exciting time of the wrestling season. The high school state tournament series is less than two weeks away. Wrestlers of all ages are hitting the mats looking to improve their skill. Everyone be sure to enjoy this time and keep things in perspective. I have spoken with several coaches who were disappointed to see the change in format of the sectional entry list. It came as a surprise to the IHSWCA executive board as well. We asked last spring that the eight teams competing at team state be able to weigh-in twenty eight competitors. The IHSAA took this and decided to make a change which forces many of us to make some difficult decisions. I have expressed my displeasure to the IHSAA, to little avail at this point. We have several important items on our agenda these next few weeks. At the sectional seeding meetings on January 25th, each school will be completing a survey and receiving an information packet. We are looking to gather information that will help the association make decisions on the direction that best suits the sport of wrestling in Indiana. This will be conducted at the seeding meeting to guarantee one hundred percent participation. The information packet will include a membership application, assistant coach of the year application, and an Academic All-State nomination form. Remember, you need to be a member to nominate your assistants, students for Academic All-state, or vote on or receive coach of the year. This season we will vote on regional coach of the year awards for all sixteen regionals. IHSWCA member coaches will be given a ballot on the morning of our individual regional. Those ballots will be due to the regional representative by the end of the day (we are still looking for a regional representative from the Calumet regional. The coach of the year will be determined by a vote of the regional reps and executive board from the sixteen candidates you select. Again, you must be a member to vote or receive the head coach of the year honor. Please bring membership forms to your regional if you need to join or contact JD Minch (jdminch@nm.k12.in.us) as soon as possible. We hope these changes give coaches a sense of greater belonging to the association and enable you to have a voice. Thank you and good luck. Cale Hoover President, IHSWCA Junior Director, ISWA Head Coach, Center Grove High School
  21. The MIC is this coming Saturday at Lawrence North.
