  6. indystar.com 11/29/11 Written by Nat Newell Perry Meridian has a lot of state-ranked wrestlers, but Falcons coach prefers to see athletes earn the accolades on the mat Perry Meridian High School wrestling coach Jim Tonte isn't opposed to individual rankings. But he doesn't necessarily believe them. Ten of his 14 wrestlers are in the top 10 on www.indianamat.com and the defending state champion Falcons are ranked No. 1 as a team. But Tonte will truly find out where his team stands this week. Perry Meridian has a meet at No. 11 Center Grove on Wednesday, then travels to No. 13 Franklin on Saturday. The Falcons host unranked township rival Southport on Dec. 7, then bring in Greenfield-Central, Avon and No. 3 Roncalli for a triple dual Dec. 10. "Rankings don't mean a whole lot," Tonte said. "The kids like them. It can give some kids confidence and fires others up, but we'll have a better idea (where we stand) after this week." Brandon Jones (113, third), Cody LeCount (126, fifth), Jared McKinley (132, second), Nick Bova (138, third), Kirk Johnson (160, first) and Jake Masengale (170, third) are ranked in the top five for the Falcons. "Our kids have been going year-round, except for the football players," Tonte said. "A lot of them competed in preseason nationals in Iowa (last month), we had kids in Fargo in July, and at Disney World in June. We feel like our kids have been at this level and are ready for these kinds of matches on a year-round basis." Think pink How times have changed. Zionsville wrestling coach Bob Brennan said he not only didn't have to convince his athletes to wear pink singlets to raise awareness for breast cancer in tonight's match with Frankfort at 6:30 p.m., but they want to wear them again later in the season. "Everybody (else can be) like, 'Oh, pink,' but (my wrestlers) like the fact we're showing support," Brennan said. "The kids are really fired up. I'm very pleased with the way the kids have gotten behind it. Breast cancer has affected so many." The Eagles are trying to raise $500 for the Komen Foundation. The team has been selling 50/50 raffle tickets and Hersey's Kisses -- "$1 for a kiss from a wrestler," Brennan said -- and will also sell T-shirts for $10 and pins at the match. The team plans to have a charity fundraiser each season in the future.

  9. I'm not taking anything away from Lough, but Bowman hurt his ankle in the first round at semi-state & still pinned Koberstein from Princeton. After that, he was just trying to survive thru the ticket round to get to state. He beat Browner from Jeffersonville in the ticket round & injury defaulted to Welch. He was going to injury default to Lough, but thought he'd try to tough it out for a better placement. Just couldn't do anything on the bad ankle & lost to Lough 5-12. Then lost to Johnson 1-2 at State in a questionable OT escape call. Will be lots of good rematches if they all go 160.

  12. indystar.com Nov 14, 2011 Written by Michael Pointer With the wrestling season upon us, it's time to take a look at the area's top individuals and teams. Top individuals Nathan Boston, Lawrence North -- Put himself in line for one of the great careers in Indiana history by going 49-0 and winning the 103-pound state title as a freshman. There have been only seven four-time state champs in Indiana. Mason Todd, Pendleton Heights -- Todd won one of state's most difficult weight classes last year at 112. A repeat of that at the newly formed 120, which also looks to be stacked, would be an amazing accomplishment. Neal Molloy, Danville -- Few wrestlers in the area are as quick and athletic as Molloy, who rolled to a 50-0 record and the 130 state title last year as a sophomore. Likely will wrestle at 132 or 138 this season. Jared McKinley, Perry Meridian -- Won the title at 125 last year as a junior after finishing fourth at 112 as a sophomore. Just might be the best wrestler in Marion County. Mitch Sliga, Fishers -- He's won multiple national titles on the summer circuit, but has the unfortunate label of being the state's best that's never won a state title after finishing third at 189 as a freshman and sophomore. Look for that to change this season, when he will likely wrestle at 195. Others to watch: Josh Farrell, Greenfield-Central; Brian Harvey, Cathedral; Kirk Johnson, Perry Meridian; Keith Knura, Indian Creek; Charlie McGinley, Tech; Levi Moss, Ben Davis; Kaden Suter, Martinsville; Mitch Snyder, Hamilton Southeastern; Tyler Willis, Cathedral. Top teams Cathedral -- This season's team may be deeper than usual -- which is saying something, considering it usually is one of the area's best anyway -- and the talent is spread across all four classes. Hamilton Southeastern -- Nearly every key performer is back from last year's team that lost by one point to Lawrence North at the team regional level. This may be the season the Royals jump from good to among the area's elite. Lawrence North -- The Wildcats have an interim coach this season in Brett Crousore, but expect the transition to be smooth. Crousore led the Wildcats to state titles in '04 and '05 and takes over a talented group fresh off a state runner-up finish. Perry Meridian -- Veteran coach Jim Tonte's defending state champs might be even better than last season's bunch, thanks to some talented newcomers. Falcons clearly look like the area's best at this point. Roncalli -- The Rebels qualified for the state team finals last season but had the misfortune of drawing Perry Meridian in the first round. Look for them to be a force on the local scene again. Others to watch: Avon, Ben Davis, Carmel, Center Grove, Danville, Fishers, Franklin, Greenfield-Central, Indian Creek, Pendleton Heights, Warren Central.

  14. dailyjournal.net By KEN SEVERSON First Posted: November 14, 2011 - 11:22 pm Last Updated: November 14, 2011 - 11:22 pm Redemption. That?s the collective motivation for the Center Grove wrestling team heading into the 2011-12 campaign. After breezing through the regular season and the early part of the postseason last year, the Trojans ran into trouble at their semistate match, where they failed to advance as a team despite a 20-3 dual-meet record. Center Grove returns 11 wrestlers from that team, and they are confident of avoiding a similar postseason fate this time. ?We are all looking forward to this season,? coach Cale Hoover said. ?We return a great deal of experience, talent and leadership. The team has had a very good off-season and is highly motivated after a disappointing state tournament series last year.? Returning starters include juniors Anthony Schoettle (113 pounds), Ceasar Gonzales (120) and Nathan Carmichael (126); and seniors Troy Willsey and Tyler Trulock at 132, Zach Hays (138), Jacob James (152), Brock Warner and Sean Mappes, who are interchangeable at 160 and 170 pounds, Dillon Dallas (195) and Drew Ponder (285). Hoover said Fleener, Schoettle, Carmichael, Warner, Mappes, Stone and Ponder have state-meet potential. ?Sean Mappes had a huge offseason wrestling in four national events and having a great deal of success at each,? Hoover said. ?We expect our seniors to provide strong leadership.? Among other Johnson County schools: Franklin With a wealth of returning starters, veteran coach Bob Hasseman is confident the traditional area power Grizzly Cubs have the firepower to challenge for the championships on every stage: county, Mid-State Conference and postseason. ?We have a lot of returning lettermen,? Hasseman said. ?If we survive our killer schedule, we?re going to be really good.? Franklin has a great start, with two returning state qualifiers: sophomore Skyler Lykins (33-10) and senior Austin Bowman (35-9). Lykins might move up from 103 pounds, while Bowman will probably go at 152 or 160. If Franklin has a problem, it?s a lack of seniors. Bowman is one of three seniors, and there?s only four juniors. The Cubs are bottom-heavy in the younger classes, with 13 sophomores and 23 freshmen. Patience could be the theme for Hasseman and the Cubs this year. ?We?ll be OK,? Hasseman said. ?Everybody that did things for us last year are back, so we won?t be as young as we look.? Cubs who figure to make big impressions on the mat include sophomores McBryan Groler, Connor Tolley (195), Peyton Reese (113), Dakota Wyrick (130) and Matthew Wyrick (140). ?The kids have worked very hard on the mat,? Hasseman said. ?Our seniors are very good, and I expect them and everyone else to step it up again this year.? Greenwood New coach Chris Campbell, who takes over the Woodmen program from Brian Smiley after a year, will be in his second stint as Greenwood?s coach. Campbell was the head coach from 1988-2001. He is the Woodmen?s third coach in as many seasons. ?This year Greenwood is bringing back some of the most talented wrestlers we have had in many years,? Campbell said. ?We are still trying to figure out where our guys will fit into the new weight divisions, but we are excited about this team.? Returning are two potential state qualifiers, sophomore Bailey Schober and junior Jonah Thompson, both of whom were semistate qualifiers last year. Returning seniors include Nathan Epler, Trevor Lasiter and Zane Ping, while juniors Jake Lennon and Mike Morgan look to do well for the Woodmen. Schober and Ping were the only Woodmen to eclipse the 30-win mark last season. ?We are having good practice sessions, and we are wrestling with more confidence,? Campbell said. The Woodmen certainly won?t want for a challenge, as they open up the season with state power Lawrence North on Thursday. Indian Creek The big question for Indian Creek is, how to top last season? The Braves boasted individual state championships Ethan Raley and Trey Reese, and a state runner-up, Aaron Stevenson. In addition, Tyler Hupp and Jacob Stevenson were state qualifiers, giving now-retired head coach Keith Grant a great send-off. Although Raley, Reese and Aaron Stevenson have graduated, first-year coach Pat Dowty expects the Braves to again enjoy widespread postseason success. Hupp, a junior, and senior Keith Knura, a transfer from Franklin who finished fourth in the state at 215 two years ago are expected to make runs at state titles. ?(Knura) could be the top-ranked wrestler at 220 this year,? Dowty said. ?Right now a lot of people expect Indian Creek to die, but we?ll feed off last year and continue to excel.? Also returning are sophomore Thomas Blessing (106) and senior Charles Snodgrass (160), both of whom were regional qualifiers. Sophomore Zach Gatton will compete at 113. Junior Vince Reese, Trey Reese?s younger brother, missed last season due to a hamstring injury but is now healthy. Whiteland Veteran coach Dave Thompson lost several wrestlers to graduation, but two of last year?s top performers are back. Seniors Brian Byrne (120/126) and Bryan Bernstein (138/145) figure to help the Warriors regain their status as one of Johnson County?s elite. ?We?re young,? Thompson said. ?We don?t have a lot of varsity experience, and we?re not very deep like in the past, but we?re eager and it?s a long season, so we?ll gain a lot of experience quickly.? Also returning are junior A.J. Kelley (126/130) and senior Jon McCoy (160/170). Kelly was a regional qualifier for Whiteland in 2010, but due to injuries he missed last season?s sectional. ?We?re hoping to stay healthy,? Thompson said. ?If we can stay healthy, we can achieve our goals, and that?s always a county, conference and sectional championship.?
  15. Congratulations from Franklin to our fellow Johnson County boys!!! Indian Creek got 5 out of 5 through! Franklin got 2 out of 9 through, but Center Grove was 0-9, Greenwood was 0-2, & Whiteland was 0-1. Good luck!
