  1. I'm not in charge of the seeding, but I know the process has not been finalized. It is worded very generally in the original write-up from the big coaches' meeting when the plan was hashed out for the event (but yes, it suggests being done according to up-to-date performance, not based on these scores).
  2. Below is a full list of the official qualifying scores for the 2012-13 IHSWCA Duals State Championships for all Indiana high schools based on their individuals? performances in the individual state series. Remember that these scores are dependent on a) your underclassmen?s performance and your full team?s projected ability to replace your seniors. These scores do NOT tell us necessarily who was best this year, but gave teams a chance to prove who will be the best DUALS TEAMS next year. Keep in mind the following selection procedures: 1. There are 4 automatic semi-state champion qualifiers for each class, plus 2 automatic Wildcard positions for each class. 2. The 3rd Wildcard will be voted on after this season is finished. 3. The 4th Wildcard will then be voted on next fall after a couple weeks of the season have completed from among the first available team and any other teams within 30 points (3A and 2A) or 35 points (1A). 4. Scores will be adjusted to reflect transfers, move-ins, and comeback situations before the final list of contenders for the 4th Wildcard vote is determined. Here is a list of the automatic qualifiers for the event and the contending teams for the vote for the 3rd Wildcard position: Class 3A Merrillville Champ: Merrillville (4th overall) Ft. Wayne Champ: Elkhart Memorial (20th) New Castle Champ: Perry Meridian (1st) Evansville Champ: Evansville Mater Dei (3rd) 1st Wildcard: Cathedral (2nd) 2nd Wildcard: Bloomington South (5th) 3rd Wildcard: Crown Point (6th) (automatic 3rd WC, because no other teams within 30 points of them) Class 2A Merrillville Champ: Culver Academies (8th overall) Ft. Wayne Champ: Jimtown (2nd) New Castle Champ: Southmont (13th) Evansville Champ: Evansville Memorial (1st) 1st Wildcard: Yorktown (3rd) 2nd Wildcard: Danville (4th) 3rd Wildcard contenders: Heritage Hills, Leo, Muncie South (5th to 7th, respectively) Class 1A Merrillville Champ: Lewis Cass (5th overall) Ft. Wayne Champ: Adams Central (1st) New Castle Champ: Milan (6th) Evansville Champ: South Putnam (8th) 1st Wildcard: South Adams (2nd) 2nd Wildcard: Churubusco (3rd) 3rd Wildcard contenders: North Miami, Bremen, Fremont, Prairie Heights, Shenandoah, Union County (4th, 7th, 9th-12th, respectively) Here is the list of all teams in the state and their final scores (* represents a score adjusted due to pre-sectional injury of an underclass wrestler who reached at least semi-state in 2010-11): Class 3A Teams Total Perry Meridian High School 413.72 Indy Cathedral High School 352.92 Ev. 3. Yeah, sorry, we had an issue with the data from one of the semi-state reporters. I have it all set to go the moment I can cross-check his data with our other reporter from his area to be sure everything is right. It may be Thursday night. Really sorry! Almost there!
  4. We'll get things out as quickly as we can, but it will take a little time to be sure all scores are official. We want to post a list of all teams in the state and there are a number of issues to be sure all our bases are covered before that is possible. We'll shoot for Wednesday as with other weeks, but I can't absolutely promise that.
  5. Someone asked about brooks' low match count: he was ineligible for the first few weeks of the season.
  6. Coach, I have really appreciated your thoughts and dialogue throughout the past few weeks. You obviously have great respect in the wrestling community, so you deserve answers to these issues. Firstly, the scoring system is just that: a scoring system independent of previous results. Just as with a team tournament during the year, you have to perform well and you have to have some luck. The scoring system is based on projection tools, but in the end it is a scoring system--it is left in the hands of the teams to earn points. I want to break down why Heritage Hills leads you 251 to 211 (equivalent to a 10-point dual spread): 1. Wrestlers scoring points (you do not score for a forfeit or for an underclassman with less than 10 matches who doesn't advance to regional; wrestlers of this type have no projection value on your team quality for next year): HH 14, Jasper 12 2. Underclassmen who scored: HH 11, Jasper 11 3. Total advanced to regional or beyond: HH 12, Jasper 12 4. Advanced to state: HH 2, Jasper 0 5. Early-round difficulty (sectional AND regional incorporated--not just sectional): HH's path 12th, Jasper's 30th Also, it's worth mentioning that if you had simply had scoring wrestlers at the two weights you had zero and had you won even one more match at any weight at semi-state, you would have 235 points right now and be squarely in the mix for the coaches' vote for wildcard #3. As it is, you still have a realistic chance to be in the coaches' vote next year for the final wildcard depending on what happens this weekend and in the wildcard #3 vote. As I said in another post, we'll re-evaluate multipliers for next season based on how successful teams were in this year's tournament compared to their multipliers. We're always open to feedback and discussion about how it all works. Enjoy the wrestling this weekend.
  7. A few more points on the multiplier: 1. It has nothing to do with which classes are represented in a sectional or regional--only overall quality and the average number of points being prevented or allowed because of an above-average or below-average sectional or regional. 2. We will definitely be able to use this year's tourney results to develop the multiplier for next year. For a number of reasons, people don't seem to trust the end-of-season, full-year Genius ratings. Genius gives a more comprehensive picture of each team's quality, but I think seeing in black and white how the tournament performances match the multiplier will feel easier for people to take in. The results will be similar enough that I have no problem doing this. 3. The "wide range" between the cap (1.3) and the low end (0.7) is actually much smaller than the data suggests it should be. One early-round multiplier without a cap would have been more than 1.6 while several low-end multipliers would have been around 0.6 without a lower limit. The disparity in quality between numerous sectional/regional combinations is enormous. There are a couple regionals that only have 3 or 4 teams that were in the top half of the Genius year-end ratings last year. At the same time, there are a couple regionals that had 12 or more teams in the top half. This has a huge, huge effect on the number of kids advancing or not advancing out of these sectionals/regionals.
  8. Just to be clear: the multipliers were based off a full season of data of all results of all teams from last year--not limited data this year. Also, Jasper is very close to these other teams--they just don't have anyone at state so they can't move up. They're not still way back at 180. As we said, we'll publish all teams' final scores after the state finals.
  9. With this selection process, they both would have been there last year...but Reitz needs a miracle this year. Merrillville's in line for the 3rd wildcard and they already have enormous points. Reitz needs to be within 30 of them to qualify for the coaches' vote.
  10. EMD is actually 1A in size, but schools were given the option of moving up in class. EMD elected to move up to 3A.
  11. Below are the standings after semi-state. This week, only the teams with a mathematical possibility of earning one of the 7 positions awarded this season are included. Remember as always that these scores are earned in a way that shows us how good a team should be in duals next season. Some notes: 1. Many teams with higher scores than some listed here are not on the list because they're mathematically eliminated (Jasper, for example, is very highly rated in 2A but has no one left wrestling and are slightly below what they'd need to remain in contention). 2. Remember, 4 positions are awarded for highest points from each of the semi-states for each class and 2 Wildcard positions are awarded for the 2 highest remaining scores, regardless of semi-state. The 3rd wildcard for each class will be determined by selection committee vote after the season from among the first available candidate and any other candidates within 30 points (3A and 2A) or 35 points (1A). 3. Scores for Merrillville semi-state teams are almost certainly correct, but should not be considered official. The others are official. 4. We'll post final scores for all teams in the state after the state finals. 5. Teams listed are mathematically "alive" either to win their semi-state berth or to be within the prescribed point differential to qualify for the coaches' vote. Numerous teams listed would need very, very big surprises this weekend to remain alive. 6. NO INJURY POINTS HAVE BEEN INCLUDED YET. DON'T FORGET TO TURN IN YOUR INJURY REPORTS TO COACH STRUCK FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS WHO QUALIFIED FOR AT LEAST SEMI-STATE LAST YEAR BUT DIDN'T WRESTLE SECTIONAL THIS YEAR DUE TO INJURY. 12. Good question. First of all, Busco has absolutely a 0% chance of finishing ahead of South Adams, so we definitely do want to let things play out. At this point they're at a similar score because 1) they have a huge % of their team coming back, 2) most of those returnees placed in a tough sectional (which means A LOT when we're forecasting 1A dual meet strength), and 3) because those high-placing kids you mention are not differentiated from 4th placers. Only final advancement level is considered in the points. This week will change everything because other teams will keep getting points while Busco is about done. Keep in mind it's 1A also. There are no superpower teams. The list of teams with more than 1 semi-state underclassmen is very short. The list of teams with almost their entire roster coming back is literally almost none--especially a team that placed so many against higher-class teams in their sectional. 1A is just a different animal.
  13. We need to go back to 12-man brackets with wrestlebacks from the quarters. Less time would be needed and the 2-time regional losers would not get an undeserved seat at the table. Cash, cash, cash. That's the name of the game.
  14. Below are the OFFICIAL standings after regionals for all teams. There were a number of errors from the sectional scores that were adjusted for this round. Some notes: 1. The 3A standings are still very irrelevant unless you're below about 140 points. Virtually everyone else has a chance to get into contention. You'll need about 280 points to get an automatic berth and about 250 to be in contention for the voting on the last 2 positions. Some surprise teams from relatively weak sectionals/regionals will have a very difficult time keeping up with the pace of the huge points that will go on the board starting this week from the powerhouses. 2. The 2A standings will be VERY interesting this week because a few teams from relatively weak sectionals (jasper, yorktown, peru, for example) have large number of underclassmen at semi-state. If any of them win their first match, the multiplier comes off of that wrestler's score and they get an enormous leap in points. Meanwhile, the top few teams will be virtually stationary no matter what happens this weekend because of bonuses already built into their scores. 3. Remember again: These scores tell us who will be a good duals team NEXT YEAR. It doesn't matter if you beat a team in a dual meet this year if you have 7 or 8 seniors. You have to prove you're going to be good next year through mostly the performance of your underclassmen. 4. DON'T FORGET TO SEND AN INJURY REPORT TO COACH DANIEL STRUCK IF A CURRENT SOPHOMORE OR JUNIOR WHO MADE SEMI-STATE OR BETTER LAST YEAR COULD NOT WRESTLE SECTIONAL THIS YEAR DUE TO INJURY. SEE THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE STICKIES AT THE TOP OF THIS DISCUSSION BOARD. ADJUSTED DUE DATE IS NOW FEBRUARY 16. 15. Wednesday morning at the latest if all goes as planned. The regional updates are easy enough to plug in and calculate, but hunting down all the correct data to verify official results of all the sectional non-placers has been a big project that carried into the weekend. We're almost done finally and we'll be able to post our new leaderboard on Wednesday as "Official".
  16. It's definitely not a matter of time for the IHSAA. When there were 12 per class at semi-state, having wrestle-backs for only the final 8 would have added a whopping one hour to the tournaments (1st rd wrestlebacks simultaneous with semi's; 2nd rd on 4 mats would have taken 1 hour). Now, with 16 kids per class, we added 2 hours compared to before. It's all about money (more parents' butts in the seats). They were willing to suddenly give the 4th place regional guys a "second chance" when they'd argued for years that there shouldn't be second chances. We didn't even ask for it. They just announced it and did it. It would have been WAY better for the integrity of competition if they'd given us simple wrestle-backs.
  17. I've researched this stuff for 20 years. It evolves over time. Until last year, Merrillville far and away dominated the state finals on every level for 7 or 8 years (total placers, total finalists, total champs, total "team points", everything). Before that, Evansville was the strongest for about half the years from '92 to '02. Fort Wayne and New Castle were always very near them and shared some turns at #1, while Merrillville was usually the weakest of the 4. There's no one semi-state that can lay claim to always being the best. There's great wrestling at all 4, and it really does go in cycles.
  18. Who would win these wrestling matches? The all-athlete match: Victor Cruz (Giants WR) vs. BenJarvus Green-Ellis (Pats RB) The lanky beast match: Justin Tuck (Giants DE) vs. Rob Gronkowski (Pats TE) The QB throw-down: Eli Manning vs. Tom Brady The Senior division: Tom Coughlin vs. Bill Belichik I'd guess Green-Ellis, Tuck, and Manning would win close ones, with Belichik pulling out the dual for the Pats with a late pin. That dude is mean and cranky.
  19. Check the IHSAA site late night on February 18. Rankings will be updated in detail.
  20. It's a projection of duals strength next year. It's using each individual's success or lack of success to show who will be the best duals teams next year. And as the notes say--it's very, very irrelevant after the sectional round only.
  21. Yes, sorry, when we wrote that, the plan was to distribute something at sectionals. Now, we'll distribute something at regionals in addition to posting instructions here online. And the due date will be in a couple weeks. Again, sorry for the confusion.
  22. Let things shake out. You have way more people still wrestling than most teams, so you'll get huge points this week and next that others won't. For a team with many advancers in 1A or 2A from a weak sectional, the scores will look strange at first, but even out. With Bellmont too, they're going to get enormous points in the next few weeks that others don't have a chance at. They'll be in the mix for sure if they get their normal number of semi-state and state qualifiers.
