  1. Very strange precedent...there really must be something going on behind the scenes at Northwestern that's been known by the Big 10 or NCAA for a while (i.e. whatever reason that caused the NW staff turnover must have been part of Micic leaving and he's being given a retroactive transfer waiver as if he transferred after the turnover).

Whatever the case, it's working out very well for Micic (and we the supporters of Indiana guys!)

I agree that whatever got Pariano fired has everything to do with this.  Whatever happened, I can't believe it hasn't been leaked yet...

  2. I love the opportunity to plug my Alma Mater here.  If he is serious about a career in the medical field and wants to have a great chance to get into grad school, I'd recommend he looks into Wabash College.  I actually suspect that Wabash may be "Option A" in this scenario.  Take a look at grad school placement rates, you'll be astonished!

Here's a link to the "colleges that change lives" brief on Wabash http://www.ctcl.org/colleges/wabash#academics

  3. Be careful getting hung up on a Major or a specific degree.  There are a few certain things you need a very specific program/degree for but most majors can be interchangeable.  A "business" degree can be very generic as can things like pre-law or pretty much "pre" anything.  Any accredited college will be able to get you to graduate school or into ALMOST any field you want to go into.  I'd probably pick the school that is stronger academically overall.

  4. It is really strange.  It makes no sense that Joe wrestling fan knows he beat Houdashelt last year (they can't use that in seeding), but they have to stick to their rigid system.  Even so, I'm not sure how Tsirtsis having one loss against the #4 national seed and Houdashelt having a loss against an unseeded guy doesn't give the #1 nod to Jason.  By the way, that unseeded guy is a travesty of a situation too.  How can they not make adjustments so that guys like Kindig or Hunter Stieber get at least low seeds despite the uncertainty of their injury situations?  Kindig vs. #3 Habat in the first round is an embarrassment to whoever wrote the rules.

Even if we don't understand the Tsirtsis Seed, I think he has a much easier road to the finals than if he had gotten the 1 seed.  His semi finals opponent is likely going to have wrestled at least two top 8ish opponents before even getting to he quarters...

  5. .the ONLY argument ... hilarious !

What other argument is there?  I don't buy the whole "pride of being the only state champion" thing because I've never seen anyone in a classed state be disappointed in a state medal from a lower division.  I firmly believe that adding a second class would still leave us with an exclusive class of wrestlers at state AND would help increase the popularity of the sport.

  6. If the purpose of high school sports was to entertain the average fan, you would get no argument from me.  I just don't think that is the purpose of HS sports.

This is the only argument against class wrestling.  There is some nominal amount of entertainment value lost because there are some matches that we simply will not get to see materialize.  We will lose a lot of the underdog and feel good stories of small school guy beating big school guy.

I don't think that is enough of a reason to keep it as an individual tournament when there are clearly other advantages to classing.

  7. Per the IHSAA By-Laws

    10-1 Out-of-State Contest Limitations

The address of out-of-state schools participating in a contest against a member school as well as the site of such contests must be within 600 miles round trip travel from the Indiana state line and shall be sponsored or co-sponsored by a member high school.

10-4 Mileage Limitation on Team Practices

Team practices out-of-state shall not exceed 120 miles round trip from the Indiana state line.

    Team Travel - Generally

    Q. 10-1 May an IHSAA member school schedule and play single games with high schools of other states?

    A. Yes, provided the high schools of these other states are members in good standing in their state high school athletic associations. Round-trip mileage shall not exceed 600 miles from the Indiana state line of each participating school and the interstate contest. (Rules 10-1, 10-1.1)

    Q. 10-2 May an IHSAA member school play in a basketball, baseball, soccer, softball or volleyball tournament in Kansas?

    A. No, the contest in Kansas is more than 600 miles round trip from the Indiana state line. (Rule 10-1)

    Q. 10-3 How far may an athletic team travel out-of-state to play a contest?

    A. Interstate contests shall not exceed 600 miles round-trip travel from the Indiana state line. (Rule 10-1)

    Q. 10-4 A member school desires to schedule a football game with a school located in a neighboring state. Is it necessary that a sanction from the IHSAA and the National Federation be obtained for this contest?

    A. No, it is not necessary to apply for a sanction to play a single scheduled game with a high school in another state. (Rule 10-10-1.1) However, round-trip travel shall not exceed 600 miles from the Indiana state line. (Rules 10-1, 10-1.1, 10-1.2)

    Q. 10-5 May an IHSAA member school play in a basketball, baseball, soccer, softball or volleyball tournament involving 17 or more other schools from states all bordering Indiana?

    A. No, the IHSAA will not sanction any tournament in the sports of basketball, baseball, soccer, softball or volleyball which involve more than 16 schools. (Rule 10-1.3)

Seems that there is some wiggle room here in that they have to be within 300 miles from the Indiana state boarder, not necessarily 300 Miles from the event site...

50% of our four timers have done it at 4 different weight classes.  I wouldn't say that "not often" is the right way to describe it.

  9. Different book.  The one he is referring was written by an IHSWCA Historian who documented the Indiana State Finals from its early beginnings until about 30 years ago.  It's a good resource book of information, but hard to find these day.  I know myself and Y2 both have a copy that we were lucky enough to find. However I'm not sure too many other people still have one unless you were an old IHSWCA member who happened to hoard old materials.

    oops!  Sorry!

  10. The thing I enjoy about these discussions is we are nitpicking about those at the very top of their craft, at least in Indiana.  I don't think anyone is disrespecting Chad Red Jr. at all.  He could lose to Lee (or beat him) and he is still a GREAT wrestler.  Lee still has 3 years to prove what he has done can be translated to the high school championship level.  I see no reason it can't/won't be.

As far as Lee vs. Micic, there is no doubt that Stevan was superior this past weekend.  Would the result be different in a rematch in this or another setting?  Hard to say.  Micic took away Lee's best weapon and kept him from getting to his legs, then countered and got take downs.  Very smart, strategic wrestling.  Would Lee adjust if they wrestled again?  I'm sure he would, but we'd be stupid to think that Stevan wouldn't adjust also.  Would freshman Micic beat freshman Lee?  Hard to say.  The bottom line is they are both unbelievable wrestlers and the years in age difference makes it next to impossible to truly make legit comparisons.  That said, while doing so from afar, I really enjoyed watching Micic the last 3 years (thank you internet!) and look forward to doing so the next 4 years at Northwestern.  I also can't wait to see Lee for the next 3 years, and his younger brothers to boot.

The Lee vs. Red debate can be very easily answered if they face each other at the Mater Dei Holiday Classic next December.  Even if they aren't wrestling in the same class by state tournament time, I see no reason why they can't make it work in December.

I think one thing that gets overlooked or that people just don't remember is that Micic was significantly smaller than his competition his freshman year.  If I remember correctly, he routinely weighed in under 100 lbs while most 103 lbers would obviously wrestle at a weight well above 103 (105 after January).  It's not easy to give up 4-7 lbs especially when that is such a large percentage of your body weight.  He was still one of the top wrestlers in the state that year...

He is a special wrestler and deserves to be talked about with the very best in the state's history.

I doubt we will see Red vs Nick Lee next year, I have a feeling Nick Lee will be at 138 or larger.  Kid has a VERY big frame and it will be scary to see when he fills out...

  11. I hope that this is what we take away from Brendan Blacks season not some of the other stuff that happened on the message board as well as the getting in as an alternate, and a first rnd fft. I think we all saw how good Forrest was this weekend so no shame in losing to him..and he got drilled in the same headlock that Sinko did..Spladles and Headlocks Mater Dei kids can always put you on your back..But after all of the nonsense and what not it comes down to a kid being a sportsman and that is what Hobart kids do..They do it the right way. I think a lot of people have learned some lessons and are going to be better for it. Hobart has a bright future..If we could just get Covaciu to move back..ooh man! haha! Good job BB..good wrestler better kid.

    +1

  12. First off, if you just get rid of the ultimate tie breaker and continue to recycle through the first 3 OTs, you eliminate the issue.  It IS stalling to drop to an ankle at that point because it is not first score wins.  The top man should be working toward a fall.

I actually (surprisingly) disagree with the consensus here.  While I wouldn't say that Vinny got screwed, my feeling as I was watching the match was that he was both pushing and controlling the action throughout and I thought a second stalling call would have been appropriate at least a few times prior to the ultimate tie breaker period.  I have not studied or re-watched the match but my lasting impression is that Vinny wrestled the better match and should have gotten at least one stalling point.  Can't say that he should have won the match because you never know what happens after that point is awarded...

  13. Some parents from Hobart do NOT like all these posts. I for one hate it. We are looking for homes in different communities and Hobart was at the top of the list. Reading all of these posts over the past couple months has really made me rethink my decisions. Thanks for the eye opener on what the next four years will bring.

Hopefully you won't judge out community based just on this...

  14. This whole bracket thing in the state of Indiana is all wrong. You will never have the true top 16 going to states with out having a wrestle back to a true third and 4 th place finisher. There should also be a wrestle back in states to get the true top 8. Half of the wrestlers are out on Friday and chances are that some of them would be in the top 8 if they had a chance to wrestle back in the losers bracket. It is totally wrong and degrading to these athletes who work so hard all year to get to this point. They need the chance to finish in their true placing. Indiana is one of the only 2 states in the country who do not allow wrestle backs at this level. All the coaches and parents should be writing letters to the wrestling association to express this issue. It is totally wrong. Come on everyone get involved and speak up and lets get this thing changed for our your and talented wrestlers!

Not to nitpick, but if 5 of the top 16 are at 1 semi-state, you also won't have the top 16 at state.  It will always be an imperfect system.  That said, I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone on this site who does not want wrestlebacks at the semi state level.
