  2. http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2010312020085 Reloaded Jeff Hopes to Stay on Top After winning two straight team sectional titles ? and facing a brutal regular-season schedule ? Jeffersonville's wrestlers will discover the difficulty of maintaining the top position. The Red Devils, No. 14 in the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association state poll, are a marked team, and they have eight newcomers in the starting lineup. The challenges are weighty, but so are the expectations. ?Our kids have wrestled for us for a long time and know what we expect,? coach Danny Struck said. ?It will take a while for them to get used to the pace of our schedule and the strength of our schedule. We wrestle several top-20 programs in duals from Indiana, Michigan and Kentucky. We hope that our season prepares us for the state tourney.? Jeff will rely on its veterans, starting with team captain Alonzo Shepherd, a 112-pound junior who is a two-time sectional and regional champion. He qualified for the state finals last season (at 103) and won Greco and freestyle state championships during the offseason. He is ranked No. 11 in the state. Renaldo Weekley, a senior moving up to 145 pounds, also has experience as a two-time Hoosier Hills Conference champion, a sectional and regional champion, a two-time semistate qualifier and a state qualifier (last year at 135). He is ranked No. 9 in the state. Struck will also count on considerable contributions from senior Kevim Castro (a returning regional qualifier) at 125, senior Tre Harbin (also a returning regional qualifier) at 140, junior Brandon Marlin (a returning sectional champion) at 160, senior Jimmy Pratt (a sectional and regional champion) at 215 and either senior Ryan DeWitt (a transfer from Corydon) or junior Elijah Curtley at 285. ?More than anything, we preach to the kids ?Count on Me,'? Struck said. ?That means we hope they turn into a man to be counted on for team points or for more support ? anything they can do for the team.? Jeff finished fourth in the opening Capital City Classic in Indianapolis, a tourney won by No. 2 Perry Meridian. This weekend it will defend its title in the seventh annual HHC Duals, with action set for 6 p.m. today at Floyd Central and 9 a.m. Saturday at Jeff. AREA WRESTLERS TO WATCH Floyd Central - Caleb Happel (senior at 112), Andrew Sharp (senior at 285), Shane Sneed (senior at 160), Eric Foster (junior at 152) and Gus Schoenbaechler (junior at 140). New Albany - Zach Faith (senior at 189), Matt O'Connell (senior at 160), Austin Jamison (sophomore at 135), Tre Marler (sophomore at 130) and Cheyenne Conn (senior at 215). Providence - Alec Hendershot (senior at 140), Brennan Gregory (junior at 135), Jordan Kaelin (junior at 152) and Dalton Schell (junior at 171). New Washington - Lane Massingham (senior at 140), Yancey Crase (freshman at 130) and Brandon Gonzales (freshman at 103). Christian Academy of Indiana - Cory Neel (senior at 135), Ethan Banet (senior at 140), Levi Speth (senior at 160) and Caleb Delbridge (senior at 285). Charlestown - Justin Wolf (junior at 125), Cory Suddeth (junior at 145), Jacob Hall (junior at 160), John Slaten (senior at 285) and Ethan Bowen (senior at 171). Corydon - Matthew LaHue (junior at 103).
  3. http://www.highschoolsports.net/local/NewAlbany/article/2010312020101 Q & A | Jeffersonville's Renaldo Weekley Email to a friend Share on Facebook Jeffersonville senior Renaldo Weekley was named the outstanding wrestler during last month's Capital City Classic in Indianapolis after he won the 145-pound weight class. Weekley, a state qualifier last year at 135 pounds, is ranked ninth in the state in his weight division. Renaldo Weekley is a senior at Jeff High School and one of the top Red Devils' wrestlers. (By Matt Stone, The Courier-Journal) Dec. 1, 2010 The Courier-Journal: You moved up from 135 to 145 pounds this year. What are the challenges of that jump? Renaldo Weekley: It's more competitive and people are a lot bigger and stronger than last year. I was a big 135-pounder, but now I'm not cutting weight this year. I fit in just fine now. C-J: How much will your experience from qualifying for the state finals last year help you now? Weekley: After that experience, wrestling in front of so many people, I won't get nervous wrestling in front of a smaller crowd now. It's just fun. C-J: What got you started in wrestling, and what do you enjoy about it? Weekley: I started my freshman year. My older brother (Christian) and coach (Danny) Struck got me started. I liked it, and I got good pretty fast. I like the competition, the intensity, the aggressiveness. I like how it's so hard that a lot of people can't do it, and you can always get better at it. C-J: You're ranked No. 9 in the state in your weight class. Does that create any pressure for you? Weekley: Whenever I was a sophomore and had to wrestle someone that was ranked, I would wrestle them as hard as I could. So when I go into a match, I feel they know who am I, they know the ranking, and I will get their best shot. C-J: What do you like to do away from wrestling? Weekley: I like playing basketball a lot, hanging out with my friends, going out to eat, movies, Xbox -- everything normal. C-J: As a senior, how do you display leadership? Weekley: I make sure all the kids are listening and paying attention, make sure everyone is going hard in practice, make sure everyone keeps the locker room clean. C-J: Who's been a role model for you? Weekley: My mom. She's always there for me. She helps me out with everything I do and always tells me I can do it. She tells me to never give up. C-J: What are your goals for this season? Weekley: The dream of everyone is to wrestle at State. I just plan on doing the best I can, going 100 percent on the mat. C-J: What has wrestling taught you as a life lesson? Weekley: That I can always rely on myself. I won't ever give up on anything I do. It has given me confidence and heart. C-J: What do you want to be doing in 10 years? Weekley: I just want to be successful. I plan on trying to be an amateur MMA fighter as a side job. I think my wrestling background would make me pretty good. -- Justin Sokeland RENALDO WEEKLEY UP CLOSE School: Jeffersonville. Year: Senior. Family: mother Fanetta; brothers Christian (19) and Xavier (15). Student/athlete: Renaldo is a two-time HHC champion, a sectional champion, regional champion, a two-time semistate qualifier and a state qualifier. He's ranked ninth in the state at 145 pounds. Coach Danny Struck: "Renaldo has enormous amounts of God-given talents. He picks up on moves faster than most, and he's truly starting to understand wrestling. He can see the second or third move coming in a match or drill set before most kids. It is really neat to see that thought process taking place. He is starting to show even more signs of leadership as the season progresses, learning he is a senior, and he could lead the team where he wants it to go."
  4. http://newsandtribune.com/localsports/x1894461322/WRESTLING-WEDNESDAY-Jeff-FC-NA-ready-to-square-off-in-HHC-Duals WRESTLING WEDNESDAY: Jeff, FC, NA ready to square off in HHC Duals By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Wed Dec 01, 2010, 12:37 AM EST > SOUTHERN INDIANA ? The first major duals tournament for Southern Indiana high school wrestling teams will take place this weekend, as Jeffersonville, Floyd Central and New Albany will participate in the Hoosier Hills Conference Duals. The tournament will begin on Friday evening with the Highlanders, Red Devils, Bulldogs and Madison competing at Floyd Central. The other half of the conference ? Bedford North Lawrence, Columbus East, Jennings County and Seymour ? will wrestle at a location yet to be determined on Friday. In Friday?s first round of matches at Floyd, the host Highlanders will face Jeff and Madison will take on New Albany. The second-round matches will be Floyd versus the Bulldogs and the Red Devils against the Cubs. All the HHC teams will then wrestle at Jeff on Saturday, as each squad will compete in five dual-meet matches. The Red Devils are the defending champions of the HHC Duals, posting a perfect 7-0 record at last year?s tournament. But Jeff head coach Danny Struck says it will be a challenge to repeat this season. ?It is going to be real tough for us to win this weekend,? Struck said. ?We will have eight kids new to the varsity lineup on Friday and Saturday. It will be a good tourney for them to get their feet wet and get ready to see what they have to do for the rest of the season.? Expected to lead the Red Devils this weekend are senior Renaldo Weekley at 145 pounds and junior Alonzo Shepherd at 112 pounds. Both are past IHSAA State Finals qualifiers and currently ranked in the top 10 in Indiana in their respective weight classes. Struck thinks Jeff seniors Jimmy Pratt (215) and Tre Harbin (140) have a great chance to be successful at the HHC Duals as well. ?Jimmy Pratt and Tre Harbin are great senior leaders that are doing some big things and have great goals,? Struck said. Floyd head coach Brandon Sisson will rely on four upperclassmen to try to improve on the Highlanders? 4-3 mark at last year?s duals. Senior Shane Sneed will wrestle at 160, while fellow senior Andrew Sharp will compete at 285. Juniors Eric Foster (152) and Gus Schoenbaechler (140) are expected to step up their leadership roles. Along with the veterans, Sisson says his sophomore class needs to raise its performance level a couple of notches. ?Our upperclassmen need to lead the way and our sophomores are going to need to mature in a hurry,? the Highlanders? boss said. ?Our sophomores are going to have to step up and get some big wins.? Like Floyd, New Albany recorded a 4-3 mark at last season?s duals. Bulldogs? head coach Eric Burres says he hopes his young squad can match last season?s record against a formidable conference field. ?I hope we will be able to go at least 4-3 again this year,? Burres said. ?You always want your team to do better, but our conference is extremely tough this year.? Burres says all of his wrestlers must persevere if New Albany wants to have a solid weekend. Two Bulldogs expected to lead the entire New Albany squad are senior Zach Faith (189) and sophomore Austin Jamison (130). Both were among five Bulldog grapplers to finish undefeated at last Saturday?s duals meet at Bloomington North. ?I expect a lot from all of our kids,? Burres said. ?We are a relatively young team, but our young kids can still win if they wrestle to their capabilities. If we want to be successful at the HHC Duals, we must pick up pins or bonus points when we can.? Struck thinks the HHC Duals assist his wrestlers in preparing for the conference meet, which will be Saturday, Jan. 15 at Madison. Plus the duals tournament gets the Red Devils battle-tested for tough nonconference opponents like Evansville Mater Dei, Trinity and Holt, Mich. ?It helps us get ready for conference,? Struck said. ?It shows us what is out there. Then we go wrestle top-20 programs in duals from Indiana, Michigan and Kentucky. We hope that our season prepared us for (the HHC meet) and for the state tourney. More than anything, we preach to the kids ?Count on Me? and we hope that they turn into a man to be counted on for team points or for more support. Anything they can do for the team.? Burres says the conference duals meet gives his wrestlers an early indication of how stiff the conference competition is and what they need to work on before the HHC meet in January. ?I think the HHC Duals give us a measuring stick as to where our kids stand in the conference,? Burres said. Sisson agrees with Burres. But the Floyd coach also pointed out that some teams might make several lineup changes before the conference meet. ?I feel the conference duals help you get a gauge where your team is at,? Sisson said. ?But a few teams have not figured out their lineups this time of year, so at conference time they can look a lot different.? ****** WRESTLING RUNDOWN COMPILED BY KEVIN HARRIS CHARLESTOWN PIRATES DOWN PIONEERS: In its season-opening meet, visiting Charlestown thumped Providence on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 64-12. The Pirates won 11 of the individual matches in posting the victory. Charlestown?s individual winners were not reported at press time. UPCOMING MEETS: Evansville Reitz Invitational, Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m.; home vs. Southwestern, next Wednesday, 6 p.m. JEFFERSONVILLE RED DEVILS FOURTH IN CAPITAL CITY CLASSIC: Jeff faced some of the state?s best competition in its season-opening meet on Nov. 20. The Red Devils placed fourth in the Capital City Classic in Indianapolis. Leading the Red Devils was Renaldo Weekley. The senior won the 145-pound weight class and was named the meet?s most outstanding wrestler. Weekley defeated Warren Central?s Kyle Reidling, the state?s sixth-ranked wrestler at the time, en route to the 145 title. Teammates Alonzo Shepherd (112) and Brent Browner (152) each placed second. Browner, a junior, advanced to his first-ever tourney finals in his career. Despite the fourth-place finish, Struck thought his team could have wrestled better. ?I wasn?t pleased with our performance. I know we are capable of much more than this,? Struck said. ?Luckily, this is a long season and our kids weren?t pleased either. They know what we have to do to correct many of our mistakes. It is up to them to do it. They know our goal is a state finals berth, and I am confident they will do what it takes to try and get there.? OTHER NOTABLES FROM CAPITAL CITY: Taivon Lucas, eighth at 103; Oscar Deleon, seventh at 119; Jordan Schremp, fifth at 130; Michael Vazquez, third at 135 with two pins; Marc Engleking, seventh at 171; Ryan Dewitt, fifth at 285; Tre Harbin, fifth at 140; Brandon Marlin, sixth at 160; Nelson Bowen, fourth at 189; Jimmy Pratt, third at 215. UPCOMING MEETS: Hoosier Hills Conference Duals, Friday at 6 p.m. at Floyd Central and Saturday at 9 a.m. at Jeff. NEW ALBANY BULLDOGS WIN THREE TIMES IN BLOOMINGTON: New Albany posted three victories in a duals tournament last Saturday at Bloomington North. Five Bulldog grapplers posted undefeated records: Antonio Nieto (125), Austin Jamison (130), C.J. Reynolds (152), Zach Faith (189) and Cheyenne Conn (215). Other strong performances for New Albany were Chase Laughead (112), Bryce Peavler (119), Cory Troutman (130), Hunter Langley (140), Matt O?Connell (160), Ethan Lee (171), Nick Lynch (215) and Christian Moore (160). ?This weekend was a good team effort and everyone contributed in some fashion,? Bulldogs? head coach Eric Burres said. ?This was our first weekend of wrestling, so we had some kids make mistakes that will be corrected as the year progresses. As a whole, I think everyone got better as the day went on, and as a coach that is what you want to see in your team.? BLOOMINGTON NORTH DUALS SCORES: New Albany 37, Brown County 30; New Albany 48, Bloomington North 34; New Albany 72, Mitchell 12. UPCOMING MEETS: Hoosier Hills Conference Duals, Friday at 6 p.m. at Floyd Central and Saturday at 9 a.m. at Jeff. NEW WASHINGTON THREE MUSTANGS GO 4-1 IN BOONVILLE: A trio of New Washington wrestlers started their season off well at the Boonville Invitational on Nov. 20. Senior Lane Massingham led the Mustangs by posting a 4-1 record at 140. A couple of New Washington freshmen, Yancey Crase (130) and Brandon Gonzales (103), each went 4-1. UPCOMING MEETS: home vs. Pekin Eastern, today at 6 p.m.; Scottsburg Invitational, Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 8 a.m. PROVIDENCE PIONEERS FALL TO CHARLESTOWN: Providence lost its season opener to Charlestown at home on Nov. 23, 64-12. The Pioneers only won two individual matches in the dual meet. The Providence individual winners were not reported at press time. UPCOMING MEET: Providence six-way meet, Saturday at 8 a.m.
  5. Local HS Wrestling Preview of all Clark and Floyd County Wrestling Teams http://newsandtribune.com/clarksports/x1468309030/HIGH-SCHOOL-WRESTLING-PREVIEW-Longing-for-glory-days SOUTHERN INDIANA ? The Floyd Central wrestling team?s run of postseason championships has hit a dry spell the past couple of seasons. The Highlanders? last sectional and regional championships came in 2008. But Floyd head coach Brandon Sisson hopes his team is ready to get the program back on top this season. ?I have told the guys that I am extremely excited for having such a young team this year,? Sisson said. ?I think our core upperclassmen will do an excellent job helping the younger group mature and wrestle the Floyd Central way. The past few years I have been blessed with good senior numbers, but lacked varsity experience. This year we will be focusing on getting better and getting back to where we have been in the past ? winning sectional, regional and (Hoosier Hills) conference titles.? Two wrestlers who are expected to lead the Highlander charge are seniors Caleb Happel and Andrew Sharp. Happel, who will compete in the 112-pound division, finished runner-up in both the conference meet and the Jeffersonville Sectional last season. Sharp is a three-year starter and has moved up from 215 to 285 pounds this season. Other Floyd wrestlers returning to the starting lineup are junior Eric Foster at 152 and senior Shane Sneed at 160. Foster finished third at the HHC meet last season. Sisson says junior Gus Schoenbaechler, who will wrestle at 140, and a host of sophomores will fill in vacant starting spots. ?We are going to be really young this year,? Sisson said. ?Our team is going to have a lot of sophomores starting this year, probably around seven to eight. We are still in the process of trying to figure out where everyone is going to go.? Two formidable tournaments should prepare Floyd for the conference meet and the sectional. They are the Calumet Duals in Northern Indiana and the Mater Dei Classic in Evansville. Sisson says Jeff is the favorite to repeat as sectional champions. ?They have won the past two (sectionals) so they have to be,? Sisson said about the Red Devils. ?I think conference is going to be a little tighter. I know that Jennings County is returning a lot of wrestlers, and Columbus East and New Albany have some good young talent coming in as well.? NEW ALBANY Veteran head coach Eric Burres will rely on two experienced seniors to provide guidance to a youth-laden Bulldog squad. Senior Zach Faith will wrestle at 189, while classmate Matt O?Connell will compete at 160. ?I?m looking for two seniors for leadership,? Burres said. ?Our young kids are good, but they need that upperclassman leadership.? New Albany welcomes back two sophomores who were semistate qualifiers from a year ago in Austin Jamison and Tre Marler. But the Bulldogs will be without Marler for the first half of the season due to shoulder surgery. Burres hopes to have Marler, who will wrestle at either 130 or 135, by the HHC meet. Jamison will compete at 135. Other key returning wrestlers for New Albany are junior C.J. Reynolds (152) and sophomores Keenan Ward (125), Chase Laughead (112), C.J. Penny (145) and Ethan Lee (171). Senior Cheyenne Conn, who did not come out for the team last year, returns to the Bulldog mats and will wrestle in the 215-pound division. Burres is expecting contributions from two freshmen in Corey Troutman (130) and Austin Ward (119). Burres expects Jeff and Jennings County to be the top teams in the conference. He also shares Sisson?s sentiments in terms of Jeff being the team to beat at sectional. New Albany will join Floyd at the Mater Dei Classic, and Burres thinks that tournament will get his team ready for the conference and sectional meets. ?What I?m looking for is a good showing from our seniors and growth from our young kids,? Burres said. ?I think we have several guys who can do well individually. But from a team standpoint, we are not deep enough. As far as the conference and sectional, we should finish somewhere in the middle.? PROVIDENCE Head coach Patrick Fleming says his six returning starters have a chance to be successful this year. Those Pioneers are senior Alec Hendershot, juniors Brennan Gregory, Jared Griffith, Jordan Kaelin and Dalton Schell and sophomore Daniel Fernandez. ?If they continue to work hard, they each are capable of achieving a lot this year,? Fleming said. Five talented newcomers will show what they are made of in the Providence starting lineup. Three of them are freshmen in Josh Murner, Ben Hauber and Matt Hickey. Sophomores Devan Evanczyk and Cameron Mitchell also will see some time in the starting lineup. ?Several of our newcomers this year have shown a lot of potential and will have an immediate impact,? Fleming said. ?They have been working hard every day and I think they will surprise some people this year.? Along with competing in the Mater Dei Classic, the Pioneers also will go to Evansville on Saturday, Dec. 11 to wrestle in the Evansville Memorial Tournament. Fleming thinks both tournaments will prepare the Pioneers for the postseason. ?I believe that several of our guys have the potential to do a lot this season,? Fleming said. ?Our goal is to continue to improve throughout the season and prepare for the postseason. As long as they keep putting forth the effort and wrestle like I think they are capable, several of our guys should go far this year.? NEW WASHINGTON Senior Lane Massingham has the most experience for the youthful Mustangs this season. Massingham won the 135-pound class at last year?s Southern Indiana Wrestling Conference meet along with being a semistate qualifier. Massingham has moved up to 140 this season and had a good start to the 2010-11 campaign last Saturday by finishing second at the Boonville Invitational with a 4-1 record. ?Lane demonstrates solid leadership in the practice room by his example,? New Washington head coach Jeremy Campbell said. ?Lane discusses openly his goals and challenges his team to dig in, learn quick and demonstrate toughness every day.? Two Mustang freshmen also were runners-up at Boonville last weekend, who were Yancey Crase at 130 and Brandon Gonzales at 103. Both wrestlers posted 4-1 marks. New Washington?s numbers are growing, as it will place wrestlers in 10 of the 14 weight divisions this season. ?We have been trying to add to our team success year after year by bringing more recognition to our program and graduating our middle school wrestlers into the high school program,? Campbell said. ?We are very young, but have a good mix of talent and strong work ethic. With the season just beginning, there is lots to be excited about because our kids are workers and do not complain. We have a wonderful support group and we expect that these young wrestlers will develop into future champions based upon how they conduct themselves during practice.? CHRISTIAN ACADEMY OF INDIANA The Warriors return an experienced squad of wrestlers this year, including five senior starters. Cory Neel, Ethan Banet, Levi Speth, Caleb Delbridge and Tyler Wall will serve as the team?s core. Additionally, juniors Evan Embry and David Bommerito return, along with sophomore Nate Dunn. In addition to those returning varsity wrestlers, CAI also received an influx of young talent. ?We have a large group of freshmen who wrestled for our first middle school program last year,? coach Mike Brown said. ?I think that all of these guys will play a big part in how well we do this year.? Like most coaches, Brown acknowledges that Jeffersonville and Floyd Central will be the power schools in the region, but he likes his squad. ?We have a good mix of experienced wrestlers and new blood on the team,? Brown said. ?It will be interesting to see where we fall in the team standings come sectionals.? CHARLESTOWN The Pirates are looking at a major youth movement this year. The team has five returning starters who will attempt to lead the Charlestown squad to its sixth consecutive Mid-Southern Conference championship. But the returners are a talented bunch. Justin Wolf, Cory Suddeth, Jacob Hall and John Slaten were all semistate qualifiers last year, and Ethan Bowen was a regional qualifier. Beyond those five, it?s hard to tell who will rise to the top of the mix, but Pirate coach Adam Doherty believes sophomore Dakota Bungcayao could be make a big impact in his second year on the team. ?He?s a hard worker,? Doherty said of Bungcayao. ?He put a lot of time in during the offseason. He wants to learn, and he had a pretty strong showing last year.? Doherty concedes that youth may be a disadvantage for his team this season, but he remains optimistic. ?With our team composition being a lot of younger guys, and our team?s leaders being juniors, you never know what you?re going to get from them in a long season,? Doherty said. ?But hopefully, we should be able to come out with a conference championship again and be competitive with the big schools at sectionals. JEFFERSONVILLE Unquestionably, the Red Devil are the wrestling team to beat in Southern Indiana. The Jeff squad returns as the defending back-to-back Hoosier Hills Conference and sectional champions, and they look loaded. The rest of the state already seems to know about Jeffersonville. The team is ranked 14th in the state, and has four wrestlers on the top-20 list of individual performers. Renaldo Weekly ? a sectional, regional and two-time Hoosier Hills conference champion who won his class at 140 pounds in the Capitol City Classic ? is ranked sixth in the state. He?s joined by team captain Alonzo Shepherd, who has won state in Greco-Roman and freestyle, Kevim Castro, academic all-state Tre Harbin, 16th state-ranked Brandon Marlin and a host of other talented grapplers. The team has some interesting additions as well, most notably Jordan Schremp, who has spent the last two summers wrestling in Japan and Mongolia. ?We seven or eight new kids to varsity in the lineup,? Jeff coach Danny Struck said. ?But they are not new to us. All of our new guys have put tons of off-season tourneys in, and are doing what it takes to improve.? For a team with the pedigree of Jeffersonville, the expectations couldn?t be higher. ?Our expectations are the same: to be the most successful version of yourself that you can be, and have the goal of individual and team state,? Struck said. ?No less.?

  7. My opinion differs. But I am glad we both shared.
  8. In respectful response to post #451...... (maybe I misunderstand it) I love wrestling for it's one on one..........but as a coach trying to grow mass numbers of kids to live in our community the team competition is very important to our lives here. This is just what made our program grow (amoung other things)............... you coach kids that have little individual success to be WONDERFUL TEAM MEMBERS!! Those are the kids that go out there and fight to gain the major decision when they coulda won by 5, or not give up the tech when they are down by 14 and the team needs them. You teach them to bridge like hell for an extra 30 seconds because somebody needs them!!! You teach them to get that pin on the guy that they have on their back when time is running out, instead of just being happy with the win. You teach them MORE ABOUT THEIR IMPORTANT ROLL IN OTHERS LIVES and not just thinking about themselves. You teach them to PAY IT FORWARD and help others out by helping the team gain 1 extra team point at a time or not lose as many. This kid has WAY MORE REASON to wrestle hard now that is for the team, then if it is just his own record. If he is a kid that isn?t very good and going to have a losing record ? now he can validate those wins and losses by saying ? "I might have lost 15 times but I never got pinned when my team needed me, or I never got majored when my team needed me." We teach kids way more about pushing through things in life with team score than I do in an individual one on one match. I have had emense satisfaction seeing my team come and celebrate a kid in a loss for going the extra mile and not getting pinned, it is an awesome celebration matside for a kid that would otherwise feel alone in his loss. Just an opinion -but the team competition has helped our program grow - even in years that "Mater Dei" was unstoppable, our kids were racing , trying to be the first to beat them. See you guys later, I gotta go coach my team.
  9. 2011 Cultural Exchange Trip to Japan Applications are being accepted for the 2010 trip to Japan. ISWA wrestlers ages 12-19 are invited to apply. This year?s trip will be departing on or about July 25th and will return on about August 7th . Our goal is to spend 7 days on the ground in Japan. Dates may change a few days either way depending on flight availability, cost, and host request. While on the trip you will be staying in the homes of and eating with our host team wrestler?s families. Our trip leader for this trip is Danny Struck and depending on the number of wrestlers we may also have additional assistant trip leaders in attendance. Wrestlers will stay in the homes of our host team members while in Japan and have a full cultural experience as well as being able to wrestle internationally. The cost of the trip is estimated at approximately $2,200. Since lodging and meals are covered by the host team the value of this trip can easily be double the total the amount that one will contribute. The best way to travel is to stay with local residents who know the highpoints of their country. Because we will be living in the homes of the host team, our hosts have an upper limit on the number of wrestlers they can accommodate. This is our first trip to Japan and it should be an exciting one. So, get your application in as soon as possible. Given the timing of this trip we will be looking at cutting off the application and acceptance process some time in April. This is an exceptional opportunity to truly experience Japan, its modern culture and its place in world history. Anyone who has been on a cultural exchange trip realizes that a trip of this type is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. You must be a Member of the ISWA to apply. Our counterparts in Japan take wrestling very seriously and we can expect good competition, strong training, and exceptional hospitality. Selection will be based on recommendations, wrestling ability, and working toward a balanced team. Volunteer of the Year Michelle Kaster of Clarksville, Indiana was named ISWA Volunteer of the Year this past Sunday at the ISWA Annual Meeting at Lawrence North High School. Mrs. Kaster has been a volunteer parent member of the Team Jeff Wrestling club the past 9 years serving as concessions director, treasurer and now the head representative for the River Valley Wrestling team. All of her children have participated in wrestling her oldest Andy Waymon wrestled for Jeff High and team Jeff for 3 years and now serves the ISWA as an official, her youngest son Eddie Kaster Jr. has wrestled for 9 years, he is a multiple time ISWA state place winner, a schoolboy national team member and 2009 Japan Cultural Exchange team member ? and currently wrestles for River Valley Middle School. Michelle has served the ISWA in a number of ways from ticket taking, to coach?s wristbands at tourneys, to registration. Most recently she has worked in the hospitality room at ISWA State tournaments, serving more than 100 workers that work at the state finals events. She serves them breakfast, lunch and diner so that they are rewarded for their officiating, time keeping and pairings jobs. ?I was very glad to see this honor go to Michelle. At every state finals you can see her (and her whole family) working to help keep everyone happy at meal time. It is often times a thankless job, but she volunteers where is needed the most. Her and her whole family are an extremely important part of our wrestling community. I hope she knows how much I love them all and appreciate what they do.? Said Coach Struck the Team Jeff Wrestling Coach and ISWA State Coach. ?When I first met Michele, nine years ago, she came to me and asked what she could do to help. Well we put here to work and she has not stopped yet? commented Louis Rosbottom, ISWA State Chairman. ?The ISWA is built on volunteers, like Michele and this is our way of saying Thank you for a job well done!?

  16. Japanese wrestling team visits Jeffersonville High School Japanese wrestling team stops at Jeff By Justin Sokeland jsokeland@courier-journal.com July 29, 2010 http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20100729/SPORTS06/307290076/Just+one+language+out+on+the+mats Jeffersonville wrestling coach Danny Struck had his guests in the palm of his hand. With his iPhone, and an app that provides English-Japanese translations, the language barrier between Struck and the 11 members of the Japanese wrestling team visiting Jeffersonville this week was manageable. ?This,? Struck said while typing in questions for the Japanese coach and showing his counterpart the screen, ?is what we do all day.? Struck was the unofficial translator and official host for the contingent from Ota, Japan, the largest of the 23 special wards that make up the city of Tokyo. Coach Fusashi Motegi, instructor at the Gunma Prefecture Wrestling Club, and school principal Kaneko Junji are the chaperones for the nine middle-school wrestlers making Jeffersonville the first stop on a three-state tour. The trip is part of the Indiana State Wrestling Association's cultural-exchange program, and each participant was busy exploring the differences. Motegi, making his second trip to the United States, was focusing on wrestling techniques he could learn during Tuesday's informal exhibition with wrestlers from Jeff and six other Southern Indiana schools. He had answers to certain questions already prepared on paper, negating the need for translation. ?Our students are taught only the basic motions of tackling (takedowns) and are not used to other motions,? he wrote. But for the others, especially the young athletes and the families hosting them for three days, the stark clashes of cultures were fascinating. The athletes all politely bowed ? an act not seen of American kids ? when presented gifts by Jeff principal James Sexton. The Japanese were struck by the size of the country, the size of American homes (compared to an average of about 1,300 square feet in Japan) and the number of pet dogs. Jeff junior Jordan Schremp spent 15 days in Japan last year as part of the exchange program. He stayed with the family of Ryoh Hugimoto, who was his guest this week, and was introduced to many Japanese traditions. When you're in Japan, it was hard for me to do some of the things they were doing,? Schremp said. ?They ate rice for almost every meal. After a while, that was kind of bland. And when a family sits down to eat in America, there might be a television on or something else going on. In Japan, they sit in very close quarters with no music, no TV, no nothing. Just silence.? Some Jeffersonville host families had to make emergency runs for chopsticks (even if the meal was lasagna or scrambled eggs) or calm a nervous teen guest who was fighting homesickness over 6,500 miles away from home. ?You have to remember, they're only 14 years old,? Schremp said. But there were common bonds. They enjoyed watching ultimate fighting on television (it seems Brock Lesnar is popular in Japan), and they looked at pictures from previous Japanese trips to Jeffersonville in 2007 and '08, finding photos of siblings or friends who had made the journey. And there are video games. Kids of all ages know how to play, especially those from Ota, the home base of video-game maker Sega. ?There's the universal language of electronic games, like the Wii,? host parent Adam Sakryd said. ?Just hold up a controller, and they knew exactly what it was. They could communicate that way, even if they speak different languages.? After touring sights in Louisville and Jeffersonville on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Japanese were scheduled to visit Indianapolis on Thursday morning and South Bend (for a quick trip into Michigan) later in the week. ?It's neat for our kids to learn how their kids do things,? said Struck, who visited Japan in 2002. ?It's a thrill. It brings our community closer. I'm a history teacher, and this is a way of learning that I can't use in class.?
  17. WRESTLING: Japanese wrestlers visit Southern Indiana this week, compete in meet at JHS By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com article with pictures: http://newsandtribune.com/highschoolsports/x1037670306/WRESTLING-Japanese-wrestlers-visit-Southern-Indiana-this-week-compete-in-meet-at-JHS JEFFERSONVILLE ? During his tenure as the Jeffersonville High School wrestling coach, Danny Struck has given his wrestlers several chances to interact with grapplers from other countries. This week, Team Jeff Wrestling Club wrestlers have gotten to know nine grapplers and two wrestling coaches from Gunman, Japan. The Japanese wrestlers have been in Jeffersonville since Monday for an Indiana State Wrestling Association-sponsored trip. They have experienced American culture and participated in a meet between Team Jeff on Tuesday evening at JHS. ?I like for the kids to see the world as a whole,? said Struck, who is a world history and geography teacher at Jeff. ?It?s a thrill for me. It?s a chance to get all my kids together. I?m a history teacher and this is a way for me to learn and not be in the classroom.? This is the third time Team Jeff has entertained the Japanese team. In 2007, Japan visited for only a day to face the Red Devils in a meet. The next year, the Japanese grapplers squared off against Team Jeff again and stayed overnight in Jeff. This year, the Japanese wrestlers are staying three nights with host families within the Team Jeff Wrestling Club. In addition to entertaining Japan, Team Jeff has hosted matches with teams from Turkey and Poland in the past. One of the Jeff wrestlers whose family has welcomed the Japanese into their home is Jordan Schremp, who will be a junior at JHS this coming school year. Schremp?s family is entertaining three Japanese youngsters this week. One of the Japanese wrestlers, Ryoh Hugimoto, welcomed Schremp into his home last season when the Red Devil wrestler visited Japan. Schremp has enjoyed the Japanese visit and says that meeting people from other countries has been a worthwhile experience for him. ?It?s been a blast. They are a bunch of good guys,? Schremp said about the Japanese wrestlers. ?It doesn?t matter what language you speak. They are all people and you can get along with anyone.? The Japanese grapplers arrived at the Indianapolis International Airport at 6 p.m. on Monday and then reached Jeffersonville about 8:30 p.m. On Tuesday prior to their match with Team Jeff, the Japanese wrestlers met Jeff Mayor Tom Galligan in the morning and visited the Falls of the Ohio in Clarksville and Schimpff?s Confectionery in downtown Jeff. Some of today?s activities include visiting the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville and having a party at the Jeff Aquatic Center. Jeff will be the first of three areas in Indiana the Japanese grapplers will travel to in the upcoming days. On Thursday morning, they will head to Center Grove High School. After their visit to the Central Indiana school, the Japanese wrestlers will go to South Bend. Jeff coaches were not the only high school mentors participating in Tuesday?s meet. Coaches from Jennings County, Christian Academy of Indiana, Columbus East, Brown County, Scottsburg and Madison assisted the Red Devil coaching staff during the meet. ?I wanted to make sure that wrestling programs were involved not only in our community, but in surrounding areas,? Struck said.
  18. Thank you to all of the southern indiana schools that came to participate in the iswa exchange at jeffersonville with team japan. 19. Congratulations to Caleb Browner ? he just signed a scholarship to Campbellsville College in KY. Caleb posted a 44-3 record this year with his only losses being to the 3x Ky state champ, the Indiana State champ and the #3 ranked kid in Indiana from Mater Dei. During Caleb?s career here at Jeffersonville he was a 3x Jeff classic champion, a 2x regional champion, a 3x semi-state qualifier, a HHC Champion, a warrior classic champion, a Greco roman state champion, 2x Capitol City classic champion, a 2x Team Indiana member for the ISWA, he ranks #4 in Career pins, 5th in single season wins, team captain, led the team this year in pins and takedowns, and was the first ever Robbie Rhinehart Scholarship Recipient. Besides wrestling, Caleb was also named the All-Area Linebacker of the year, and was a member of the 2008 Red Devil football sectional championship team. In wrestling Caleb led the Red Devils to 3 sectional championships, 2 conference championships, 2 warrior classic championships, and a #13 ranking in the state as a team. Caleb and the Red Devil wrestling team actually attended the Tiger wrestling team camp last summer and went 7-0 in duals winning the camp championship, and Caleb was named to the Camp all-star team. Caleb makes the 13th Red Devil wrestler in the past 7 years to go try his skills at the collegiate level. Caleb received many calls during his senior year here, but made his final decision between two NAIA schools ? Lindsey Wilson college and of course Campbellsville. Caleb will be wrestling for Frankly James at Campbellsville. James was a 1998 NCAA All-American. Coach James has led the tigers to 4 straight top twenty finishes in the nation, and coached 2 national champions in the last 5 years there. The Tigers were an NAIA/NWCA all-academic team in 2009-2010 as well as winning the MSC Conference. ?Caleb was the hardest working wrestler I had the pleasure to coach so far. Caleb has all the potential to be a national champion in college and we believe [/img] that Coach Frankly James and his staff will put him in the best position to do this. Coach James is a good man, and that is important for us to send our kids off to college with good people that will get them educations, says coach struck.? ?Caleb?s leadership, enthusiasm, and never ending work ethic will be missed. He left the team as one of the greatest role models we will have here of all time. We all love him here, and can?t wait to follow his success.?
  20. Wrestlers, coach selected to wrestle in Mongolia in August By Greg Mengelt ? The News and Tribune ? Sunday May 23, 2010 greg.mengelt@newsandtribune.com As the Jeffersonville wrestling program has grown in stature, its continued development has come with rewards. Three Jeff wrestlers ? along with coach Danny Struck ? have been selected by the Indiana State Wrestling Association to participate in a wrestling tournament in Mongolia this summer. Junior Jacob Everett, sophomore Jordan Schremp, and River Valley eighth grader Brandon Spangler will accompany Struck to Darkhan, Mongolia from Aug. 1-12. ?I have coached or wrestled now in Poland, Japan, Australia, Mexico and Turkey, and sent kids to Alaska, Scotland and more than 30 states, but this is going to be the biggest adventure of the them all,? Struck said. Schremp is a three-time folkstyle wrestling state champion in Kentucky, and Spangler was the most valuable wrestler on his River Valley squad and is a member of the middle school national team in Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling. ?These kids were not selected only by their wrestling ability,? Struck said, ?But also by their sportsmanship and ability to represent Jeffersonville and Indiana to the world. I believe that it?s important that we teach our wrestlers, athletes and students that the world is our home and we must learn to live in it together. That is why I find wrestling so special, it is one sport that ever country has. We can use that as our international language. I tell the kids that we will ?see the world through wrestling.?? While it will be the trip of a lifetime for the Jeff wrestlers, it has come with a price tag. Everett, Schremp, Spangler and Struck will be responsible for raising nearly $3,000. Struck said it will be worth it ? and much more. ?I have taken or sent kids to seven different countries now, and I am positive this trip will be the most unique,? said Struck, who is also a history teacher. ?We will be going to the roots of wrestling, and culture, as it?s tough people still live much today the way Genghis Khan did 900 years ago. I have told the kids that while they may want to come home badly (by the end of it), this will be the best experience of their lives and will be an adventure story they will tell forever.? Any other wrestlers with intereste in attending this please contact ewojdyla@hotmail.com

  22. JEFFERSONVILLE RTC SUMMARY:Jeffersonville hosted another successful RTC last night. With a low of 20 kids on the last night, and a height of over 50 kids on our ?Greco Live Night?. We had clinicians from Mt. St. Joe College, Lindsey Wilson College, Indiana University and Manchester College. We also brought in Army Combative instructors that worked with kids in Wrestling, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu. And on our last night we had a man come in from Cincinnati to work with the kids in Sambo wrestling before we try going to the USAW Kentucky state Greco/Freestyle and Sambo championships. Different schools that attended this RTC were: Trinity KY, Dupont Manual KY, New Washington, New Albany, Floyd Central, Columbus East, Jennings County, Jeffersonville and Scottsburg. While we never had all schools there at once, (as many schools only attended once), they were there at different times non-the less. This tells me with the variety in instruction and activity we did offer something that different clubs wanted to see at times. It is my goal to keep working to get more kids together in southern Indiana at one time. A summary of each night is listed below. We hope to have more Schoolboys/Cadets/ and juniors from around the area come on in next year!
