  1. I am thinking as I go as well…not bad, but is there a way to reward as you go? As in, reward for being able to control, but also incentivize action. Although it is impressive to watch someone accumulate 3+ minutes of riding time, it isn’t too exciting. Especially for a new/casual fan. Is it too chaotic to award the point as you describe it at the end of each period? Would make last-second takedowns interesting…or complicated…
  2. I wish there were a way to secure like “mini” riding time. Hold down opponent for 30 consecutive seconds (or 45 or 60, the exact time isn’t the idea) and you get a point…opponent is released and you start back from neutral. Or something that can reward a wrestler for controlling on top, but still keep action moving along. That would net you three points at a time if you are able to take down and secure your opponent, but not as much reward for takedown/let up
  3. If we are going to have a pizza conversation and discuss Pizza King, we have to start being specific about what Pizza King is being rated. In my small sample size (maybe 3-4) there are wildly varying levels of Pizza King quality, depending on location.
  4. Their website name says it all. Search up Papa’s Pizza Culver Indiana…you’ll see I am correct.
  5. Excuse me, there are no houses next door to Papa's Pizza in Culver...
  6. I have absolutely no idea what this thread is about nor how I fit into it...however, getting tagged by UncleJimmy is a lovely way to start my Saturday morning:} Good to know you are starting to think about class wrestling, even when I am not around...thinking maybe some seeds of agreement are starting to sprout...
  7. I believe the other six schools of the HNAC (Caston, Culver, Judson, Pioneer, Winamac, Triton) are remaining in the HNAC. Hopefully we can pick up a couple more schools, but if not, I like this group going forward.
  8. Said it before, say it again... I am truly going to miss this thread.
  9. Would everyone prefer they make a hasty decision just so we have an answer? Or take their time and back the best decision for the wrestling community? State's not for almost 11 months. They could announce the location in August, and we'd still have plenty of time to prepare.
  10. Why have wrestlebacks? If you just work hard enough, you will be the bad draw and won't need wrestlebacks. Small schools aren't playing the same game as big schools. Wrestling should be classed for teams and individuals. Our tournament is amazing, but spectator engagement should not factor into how we conduct our tournament.
  11. Funny, I came here to give him credit for getting up off the mat, shaking hands, and moving away. Saw a lot of laying and sulking yesterday, and I am always impressed when someone in complete athletic devastation has the respect for their opponent, themselves, and the sport to just get up, shake hands, and do whatever is needed to cope behind closed doors. We shouldn’t hope Spencer Lee is injured, but I agree, we should hope he didn’t just throw in the towel.
  12. I did read the post, my question was genuine, not rhetorical. Thank you for answering it. Are these schools upset because Cathedral and Roncalli are too good or because they are private? If it is because they are too good, then that is probably a "draw the line somewhere" situation. If it is because they are private, then that is a completely separate issue that may not have a viable solution. It seems like you may be working around to an argument something like, "Well, people will complain no matter what, so why change it?" Is that accurate, or am I misunderstanding?
  13. Are the smaller enrollment schools upset about competing against these schools in football, basketball, etc?
  14. Yeah, that's rough. Honestly, right now our main focus is trying to get as many kids as possible experience with the sport. Even if we never are very good, wrestling teaches lessons that other sports don't...so if we can get even a season in for some of these kids, we feel like the value added to their lives is tremendous.
  15. Class based on size, like every other sport. Whatever the other sports use as protocol for moving up a class, use that rule. Stick with the way it has been done in the other sports and no worm cans need to have their seal broken. And yes, as a former track coach, former (possibly upcoming...) cross country coach, and as our girls wrestling coach, I say class all sports in which we are holding a state tournament.
  16. The “you” was more general to all those suggesting we all just work harder and not push for class wrestling.
  17. Why do you assume that we are not putting in effort? Why do you assume that we are not running an intramural league for our k-3 grades so that parents don't have to travel an hour+ in the wee hours on Sunday to get exposed to the sport? Why do you assume that we (along with Triton, Urey, Knox, Judson) are not working hard to develop a wrestling league for grades 4 and 5 for the same reason stated above? Why do you assume that we have coaches to cover these teams (along with our MS team) so that the varsity coach doesn't have to coach or assist all of them? Why do you assume that we do not offer off-season wrestling for our varsity wrestlers as well as opportunities to attend camps with school-provided transportation? Our coaches are dedicated. Our kids work their tails off. Our administration supports the hell out of us. We are playing a different game.
  18. Sounds like a powerhouse school in a two-class system.
  19. Furthermore, if anyone else is working with an "army" of coaches, feel free to send some to southern Marshall County. Even two or three would do us wonders. We currently have three in the program, so you could double our numbers and barely make a dent in yours.
  20. Ah, see you coached at CMA, a private boarding school with an enrollment of about 800. I am talking about comparing Penn to Culver Community, a small rural school with an enrollment of about 240. There is a big difference between Culver Community and Culver Academy. Trust me, we are working to "find a way" every season, and will continue to do so.
  21. First, I must say, hat is a really cool mat. I very much disagree about class wrestling. Again, when our kids have to choose, we don't lose numbers, we don't lose quality, we lose programs. Big schools and small schools aren't playing the same game. If you truly believe that a kid a Culver Community can put in an equitable amount of effort compared to a kid at Penn and consistently expect to yield the same results, then you do not know what it is like to be a kid from Culver Community. Or Caston or Triton or.....you get the idea. I know there are exceptions. I coached two of them. However, that is exactly what they are - exceptions to the rule. If I am not mistaken, you and I were talking to one of the Culver Academy coaches at regional this year. It would be interesting for you to get his perspective, as he has coached in your program and has coached in ours.
  22. @UncleJimmy, Did you not read the very post that drew you into this thread? To me, it's mostly about fairness. Just because "life isn't fair" doesn't mean that we shouldn't make fairness a goal. Excellence isn't attainable for everyone, but that doesn't stop us from making it a goal. You point is valid. I was just talking to my school neighbor about the fact that kids don't play sports because they're not as fun (cool would be an appropriate adjective as well) as whatever the kids are currently doing.
  23. And (my hypothesis is) that is why not as many kids choose to participate.
  24. What was opportunity in 1983 and 1993 is necessity in 2023.
