  1. I would suggest you submit your Future "A+" to the Indiana Mat for publication. You have certainly taken a difficult position to defend. Coaches, parents and young wrestlers all have a unique perspective on this issue, but the bottom line is weight regulation was put into place to protect the health of athletes. The goal is to maintain minimum body fat and maximize lean muscle. This is done through physical training and proper diet. In the past, and what you suggest, is to do it through starvation and dehydration. In the past, over zealous athletes and coaches have stepped over the line of sensibility in an "attempt to excell" and athletes have paid the price. This was bad for the sport of wrestling. As some have suggested the regulations are a joke, because they are not clearly enforceable. These regulations are needed and better than nothing at all as, again, you suggest. Good Luck with your Paper!!! I hope I get a chance to read it. One question though. Are you a Wrestler ? Respectfully Oscar
  2. HooRah !!!!!!!!! Clear the Line.......................................................................................... White Sox in 2009 and forever !!!!!!!
  3. President Obama taught Law in South Chicago in a little ole nieghborhood called Hyde Park. They also have one of the top resaearch Hospitals in the World which happens to be part of the Medical School at that sometimes obscure University. I'll bet Billy's mom and dad went there ;D Billy is a funny and smart kid. Just like his mom and dad. :D I'll just bet the Pres is Sox Fan. Oh Yea he did admit to trying dope a time or two.
  4. history of losing, i mean i even went to wrigley to watch them play the astros (my second favorite team that day) and guess what happened a tornado ran rampent ;D ;D----Now that is funny Wahoo for You Fabio!! Are you doing any wrestling in the off season Fabio?? That is a serious question. My son is always too busy studying and doing other college stuff. I need to encourage him to do some off season wrestling.
  5. Why don't you start your own post and not come on so negative. It is all in fun . This post will drop out of sight soon enough. Just like all the other post. Chill Baby!!!! It is spring time and baseball is a great American Sport. I'll have to admit though, I was born to wrestle live and could only watch baseball, because I can't even see a ball at 100 mph let alone hit it!! ;D ;D
  6. Thank You Drooke. I don't think Jason needs Alexs shadow. Jason is an absolute pleasure to watch on the mat. Artistry in motion.
  7. You could probably put up the same list in Iowa. Pretty equal with a little different Tournament set up. USA Wrestling vs NHSCA this makes each tournaments purpose a little different. Junior vs Junior or Senior vs Senior(Virginia Beach) is a better place to measure talent when you are recruiting. Iowa had a lot of kids trying to get better for high school. This is good for the sport of wrestling which is one of USA Wrestlings purposes. One is not better than the other. Just a little geography. How about the beach vs a corn field? ;D
  8. Old discussions just never die ,like this one. I would like to thank Y2 for maintaining the democratic way and not sensoring guys because their opinions differ.
  9. Wcs145 I agree with your position. I do not want to do away with the team development concept. I just want to do away with uncontrolled discretion, cheating and lack of individual consideration when developing a team. Let's be honest all systems are corruptable and this one is no different. What I really want is balance and a return to good ethics. An ethics that does not take away from the individuals hard work and effort, to satisfy a coaches need to always be on top in team competition. As a coach I think you can see the potential for Team Building to be ego driven. Everyone wants to be a winner. It is human nature. This human nature is the same thing that makes people corruptable. I have had a good hard inside look at Team Building and some of it's downsides. How do we do it better? I do not really no yet. I am trying to figure it out. One thing I do know, I just keep listening to the little angel on the right shoulder telling me to do the right thing. That little devil on my left shoulder, I just keep flicking him off. Vince Lombardi once said "Winning isn't everything, it is the only thing!" ,but he did it through hard work and Inspiration. He endeared himself to his Teams by maintaining a very high adherence to morality and ethics. They won for him because they loved him. Why? Because he truelly cared about them as individuals. Then, they came together as a Team. Respectfully Oscar
  10. Facts are stupid things - Ronald Reagan Let's look at this. The Individual State Competition has representation from 140 + communities. It draws 15,000 fans over two days. It draws attention of college recruiters. This allows dedicated athletes the ability to use their sport as a vehicle to get were they want to go, a college education and an opportunity to participate in collegiate athletics. On the other hand Team State Competition has representation from 8 communities in any given year and maybe 32 in the whole pool of teams really competing for this. It draws 7500 concentrated fans and is a lot of fun. It is good ole high school gym on a Friday Night kind of excitement. I don't think college coaches are watching, because they already did that at Conseco. What has more to offer? Which one represents the most people? Which one opens up more opportunities for Kids?. The Team State Competition is just added fun and gives wrestling another avenue of excitement. It is good ! But before this format was added we still crowned a team champion and we still do it today. They call it a "Coaches Trophy" now. What if your team has a down trend and does not have a chance to compete for team honors. Are you going skip the individual tournament? Does any one ever wonder why some teams never seem to have down trends? There is a method to this madness and a lot more than meets the eye. GO Team !!!!!--- but my son is wrestling in college on a near full ride because of his individual accomplishments on the mat and in the classroom.
  11. It starts with you WeeMom. Team = Wrestling Family You have to have a strong community base which begins with just one dedicated parent. That's You !! ;D ;D You need to organize as many people as possible and make wrestling your community pet project. Convince as many people as possible to wrestle all year round. In a word you have to make wrestling "Cool" in you community. Ask the "Italianmom" she is the master of Team Building. Her secret: She cares about kids. And you thought I was against Team. Not True. Only when it turns to manipulation. Again and as Always......... Respectfully Oscar
  12. wcs145 Don't worry no one is going to take the team plaything away. What an arguement! FYI -- Egomaniac--- Bingo !! Darn, this horse just won't die ! Please read my post very carefully and then study my signature quote. I hope this helps you get a clearer picture of why I post these positions. Respectfully Oscar
  13. Team ! Team!Team! Team Dual Competition and individual accomplishment in this sport are not, never have been and never will be compatable. They are totally seperate. You will never find 14 high school wrestlers with the dedication to work hard enough to achieve what is required to compete at the collegiate level. So if you desire to compete at the next level it is about the individual and his willingness to work hard enough to move to the next level. The arguement that you need a team to do this is not valid. As in boxing one needs sparing partners and a mat to train on, as well as a weight room and a good pair of running shoes. My sons coaches often refer to these sparing parners as wrestling dummies-- real nice don't you think! I do not. Dual Team competition is fun, Yahoo!!!! and it has its place in the great lessons of life but this begins with individual development first. You Team Builder egomaniacs need to stop feeding this crock to unsuspecting parents and kids. It is ok to promote team but be honest and be fair and stop lieing ,misleading and cheating kids under the false pretense it is for the team. How we blend these two types of competition needs to be tempered so we do not cheat anyone out of opportunities they deserve. Now -- were is that picture of the dead horse!!!! ;D
  14. WeeMom You said,"So-yes -there might be an instance where the individual part of it plays more of a factor than the team... your senior year." Thanks for your support. You are returning to the good side young Jedi--something Yoda might have said to Luke Skywalker. Yoda-- just another superhero and a master of great wisdom. Him and Oscar would have been great buddies. May the Force be with You ! as always........ Respectfully Oscar
  15. WeeMom Cutting weight is not real advisable at this age. Respectfully Oscar "What are You?" -- "I'm Batman !!!" from the Movie Batman Begins
  16. WeeMom Come back to the good side of the "force" do not be drawn to the dark side ;D ;D ;D Coaches are trying to fill slots on the team not looking at what is healthy or not for the kids , Or what is good for their continued development or future plans. Team focus is good and a lot of fun but beware of the "Monkey Business" with weight shifting. Do not let anyone make you sons experience about weight cutting. That should be determined by two things growth development stages and Body Fat. Just be aware of the trappings that are a part of team building. Respecfully Oscar Look up in the sky its a bird ! No it's a plane ! No It's Superman !!!!
  17. "Facts are Stupid Things" There were 8 out of 309 teams at team state. With 24 wrestlers on each roster that equals 192 Individuals. I would guess 1/3 are seniors which means 64 are seniors and how many are going to college to wrestle? At last count of college signings a total of 16 and 3 came from the 8 teams that made it to state. Just stupid facts ;D
  18. I too share in the thrill of Team competition and have personally experienced it. But what you say really supports the individual side of this arguement. The thrill, excitement and $$$$$$$ will keep the team competition intacked. The coaches want it, the fans want it and the schools$$ want it. I am a fan so I want it, but at the same time recognize that wrestling begins with individuals. I am on the side of individual is first and from there you build a team. All NCAA conferences and the NCAA National Tournaments are built on this system. This was the way it had been in Indiana High School Wrestling until about 15 years ago. The old sytem was built on " If you compete well individually you will subsequently do well as a team". I would say I prefer that line of thinking. The problem arises when you compromise individuals to build a team. It is literally impossible not to. Team Vs Individual These two concepts are not compatable. Coaches build teams that do not permit them to look out for what is in the indiviuals Best interest. So whos interest are we serving ? The coaches, the fans and the schools ? If coaches are going to build teams, and I believe they should, they need to do a more complete and better job of protecting the best interest of individuals. If they can not do that then we should just go back to the old system. I believe it can be done, but it takes effort. Respectfully Oscar
  19. Arm triangle choke http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arm_triangle_choke Arm triangle choke (or simply arm triangle) is a generic term describing blood chokeholds in which the opponent is strangled in between his or her own shoulder and the performers arm. This is as opposed to the regular triangle choke, which denotes a chokehold using the legs, albeit with a similar mechanism of strangulation against the opponent's own shoulder. An arm triangle choke where the performer is on the side of the opponent and presses a forearm into opposite side of the neck of the opponent is called a side choke, such as from the kata-gatame hold. This is very helpful. Sorry for being a smart ass earlier. I was being a Quick Draw. o
  20. Seems like I heard him say"We knew if we competed indvidually we would get points as a team." This is what he said when he was asked about the team compitition. Sorry, but at the high school level you will no find 14 truely dedicated individual wrestlers to form a dedicated team. Yes it is a coaches job to try to do this, but he is going to sacrfice individuals to do it and with that I have a problem. The team should be built around dedicated individuals. If team success can come out of that then I am all for it. I think that is what happens at the college level as Reese stated. I love Team Wrestling so don't get me wrong. I just believe the order is individual then team.
  21. From Y2-- How good would your son have been if it was him and only him in the wrestling room every day ? No coaches there to push him, no teammates there to wrestle with him etc. ? I find it hard to believe your son would be have half the wrestler without those people in his life. Y2-- This could get a little too personal for open discussion. You asked three direct questions and I will attempt to answer without being mean spirited towards anyone. The first question is a little presumptious. How good would he be if... ?? You have to have a High School Affiliation(Room) There will always be some good kids in every room. Would my son have gotten as good or better in Your Room? We will never know? My son would have likely done well because of his work ethic no matter what. That came from his family teaching going back several generations. No coaches, no teammates again this is straying from the point. He would have had those in your room. Would he have been better off in your room with teammates that respected him and appreciated his work ethic . Those people include many more people outside of the room who share in his success than the number in the room. He could have been better. Now that he is in college time will tell just how good he can get. Let us not forget he is pulling a 3.5 GPA as a collegiate athlete. I'll give credit for his brains to his mother. She always had to put up with those smelly workout clothes too. I take offense that you suggest that my son would not be half as good. You obviosly do not know me, my family or my son very well. You would have loved to have my son in your room. Respectfully Oscar
  22. This cuts both ways. I think Boom444 put it best. There is a place for both. I believe it starts with focus on what is in the best interest of each one of the individuals involved and the quality of the team will follow. This is not easily done. Sometimes individuals are sacrificed to benifit the team and with that I have problem. The individual hard work of a wrestler can be squandered by a few lazy a's who won't put out for either team or individual success. On an individual level you get out what you put in without having to carry the slackers. You work hard, you win, you earned it!! If you look at Nationals Team these are all guys who work hard individually and come together as a team. They are also the guys who advance to the next level. This scenario is the best of both worlds. Like I said before it starts with motivated individuals. Sorry Y2, my son got better by going to Camps , clinics, national tournaments and wrestling school (ie--Overtime in Ill). They were classmates not teammates. No offense intended here but most high school kids do not see the big picture, therefore it is difficult to depend on them in wrestling as a team concept. Hope this all makes sense. If not zing away.
  23. Hmmmm!!Too deep for me.Seems Conseco is a lot bigger deal than Center Grove. Team is for the Fans and Revenue.Individuals looking for the next level better rack up the the Indvidual accomplishments.
  24. Fabio you look FAB-ULOUS !!!!!!!! You learn that in College ?? DOH !! You might learn more if you could read what Homer is saying over to the left.
