  1. So we should just have kids at small schools specialize in one sport then, right? I mean how great could a football team be with 25 kids. How good would the wrestling team be with 10 kids, the basketball team be with 15 kids. How about the track team with 15 kids too. Or instead these kids could help out the other sports by participating and we could double the number of participants. Kids should do what they desire to do! I said nothing about having them play one sport. If they want to play multiple sports for leisure/competition/or just because they like the sport, great, they are welcome to do so! We could probably all agree that in MOST cases (exceptions being great athletes), that if they wish to earn scholarship money to play that sport at the next level, they should focus on that sport. As stated, I was able to still play two other sports, but continued to focus on baseball the entire year and earn scholarship money for it at the small collegiate level. What is the percentage of kids that honestly get scholarship money to play a sport in college. Should we really do a sport for the sole purpose of getting money for college? If you were attentive enough to read my ENTIRE post, the very first thing that I said was that "Kids should do what they desire to do!... If they want to play multiple sports for leisure/competition/or just because they like the sport, great, they are welcome do so!" SLOW DOWN a bit on your response and absorb things. Your ignorance is being displayed to the fullest! You also said that if they want a scholarship they should specialize. Maybe you should reread your statement. I know many kids that would love to get a scholarship but cannot afford to specialize because the baseball team needs a centerfielder and the football team needs a two-way starter. Of course, lets tell these kids to specialize, because that is what is better for the WHOLE athletic department. Lets have a divided athletic department at a small school where you not only share athletes, but many times coaches too! That should be lots of fun. You're damn right I said that if they desire an athletic scholarship, they should specialize! That is often times what it takes to EARN one. Poor small school kids for having to decide what sport to play, or not to play for that matter! Get over it, there are tons of small schools all over the state that feel the "drain" from spreading athletes over a few sports. The interesting thing is that you are a coach, in a position to switch to another school if you so CHOOSE. Why don't you just go to a big school so that you can stop complaining about how hard it is for small schools!

  4. Come on Y2! I was a small school wrestler that played three sports. I was an above average wrestler, but chose to focus on baseball. We all know that in regards to most every high school athlete, more practice/attention in a given sport will give rise to improvement in that sport. Had I wrestled more than just from Oct. to Feb. I probably would have progressed further in the tournament and been more successful overall! You're bending things people are saying.
  5. Absolutely! The point of making the original post was to commend the Indiana born Big 10 wrestlers much deserved credit. As for the statement made about "all hail IN/being the best state...." I stated the limitations in my observation at the end! It was a bit of a disclaimer if you will.
  6. My name's Forest Gump. People call me Forest Gump
  7. I am Spartan King Leonidas. "Spartans! Ready your breakfast and eat hearty... For tonight, we dine in hell!"
  8. Having seen Angel, Hump and Howe all in the finals, I got to thinking about how we stacked up against other states in representation. I did a bit of research and here are the results: State-# of Finalists IN-3 IL-2 NJ-2 PA-2 FL-1 MI-1 VA-1 CA-1 IA-1 OH-1 UT-1 MT-1 WI-1 ID-1 MN-1 Obviously, the distribution is spread pretty even throughout the country with 15 states represented. In addition, this is definitely not the best indicator of state strength within the Big 10 as total participants or place winners by state would probably provide a bit better statistic, but would also be labor intensive to gather. Overall, CONGRATS to Angel, Hump and Howe!! You are to be commended for the manner in which you have represented Indiana wrestling in the national spotlight. In addition to my first post on this topic, Indiana was the ONLY state to have multiple Champions!
  9. Let me first state that I am in no way a biased individual that is "anti-cathedral." Not to be "just another person downing Cathedral," but, my biggest beef with Cathedral at state was their use of injury time. It seemed that on several occasions a Cathedral wrestler used injury time to simply take a breather! The official would grant injury time, the wrestler would display no signs of pain at all, and simply sit there on their butt resting. Did anyone else see this? I am not going to point out individual wrestlers, nor am I asking anyone else to do so. I believe as adults, we should all be able to refrane from throwing TEENAGERS under the bus. The previously discussed criticism is definitely one of a higher degree of importance. I just wanted to throw out an observation that I had made.
  10. Last I knew from a pretty reliable source, Chalfant weighed in at Conference (month ago) at 238/239ish! He's about 6'2"/6'3".
  11. hwtsrule.... Mr. Arthur is making what is a relatively accurate generalization about small schools in Indiana. You see small school kids with inflated records get beat my "average" wrestlers with decent records all the time. I, like your son went to a small school (under 300). We too had a couple of events on our schedules that provided challenging competition. His statement is largely accurate. I was an above average wrestler and wish I had, had the opportunity to wrestle a tougher schedule. It could have been very helpful in providing me with tough competition to better prepare me for the post season. I hope that your son has had ample opportunities for facing the best competition as that is the only way to get better. Possibly we will see in the coming weeks. Best of luck to him and his teammates. I don't think that there is any reason to think that Mr. Arthur's comments were malicous at all.
  12. So now people are going to agree with me and take Chalfant over Janney by pin???? 8) 8)
  13. Chalfant by fall!!! If not in the first, if Janney takes down, then in that period.
  14. Snatch..... are you serious??? Have you seen Chalfant... It would take a semi to catch him on his back and hold him there long enough for a pin!!!
