  1. This is squarely on the official and the coach.  Both should know the situation on the mat as it relates to the score.  Additionally, both should know the rules clearly.  There is no excuse for this to happen, especially if it involves the determination of advancement in the state tournament.

This may be part of a larger problem of not having enough people involved in the sport and becoming officials.  It may also be a problem with rules knowledge and mentoring or educating officials properly.  This is common in all sports not just ours.

  2. Affect and effect are easy to mix up. Here's the short version of how to use affect vseffectAffect is usually a verb, and it means to impact or change. Effect is usually a noun, an effect is the result of a change.

    AWood2...you are a verbal mastermind!

  3. Wow.  It has been 7-8 years since I've been on this site.  And now that I am no longer an official, I am back as a fan (not a former official).

My head is about to explode.

I don't know where to start.

    Wrestling Scholar...you are mostly wrong.

SIAC fan...you are less wrong than WS but still mostly wrong.

AWood2...you are mostly right but wrong on occasion.

  4. An idea when Merriville brackets will be up? I figure I need to line up soon to get in, since there are no where near enough seats. (Different topic, Different day)

    Never...however..the Merrillville brackets are up.

  5. this was garbage. Every match today hartman took at least 1:30 inj Time to catch his breath. Everytime he went back to the middle he got a burst if energy and scored. I think the only thing that was hurting was his lungs.

He is an Asthmatic...well within the rules to use an inhaler during a match.

  6. Does the o.w. award always go to someone from the winning team. Not taking anything alway from shurg and I am glad it went to an Indiana wrestler but the 215 from Illinois beat a state champ.

Interesting point...he was wrapped up in that craddle very tightly and didn't go over... held on to that victory with raw guts.

  7. hands down...worst officiating i've ever seen, and it was at TEAM STATE

You think that was bad...you should have seen the guy at the Braggin' Rights today...he reffed just like #4 at team state...Horrible.

  8. The reffing was about at 50%...the grey haired guy did great..the other was horrible.  He actually made a phantom reversal signal and never awarded points.  He was in a daze the whole time.  I'm not sure what was going through his head.

    Oh wait...that was me!.....hahahahaha

    Somedays are better than others.

There were some very good matches today.  It's is always a pleasure to watch great talent from the best seat in the house.  Congrats to all who participated.

  9. They charge you $9.00 so they can pay us officials $.25 a mile to drive to New Castle, Evensville, Ft Wayne or Merrilville, so you do the math, $.25 a mile and gas is $2.50 a gallon times 318 miles round trip. ???

I must be nuts, but the kids and the wreslting make it alittle less painful to swallow. Oh yea and eating lunch standing in a corner holding your plate because there is no place to sit down or time to eat between rounds. :'(

Hotel room $79.00 out of pocket expenses sharing your locker room with other wrestlers, the experience is priceless!!!

    You do the math. 8)

318 round trip...you sissy...I did 299 one way...I bet a girl can choke you out! LOL

  10. Hey DNR if you know a proffessional baseball team I can see for under a hundred bucks, let me know!

I think what everyone needs to realize here is that you are paying for what you get.  I am sure the IHSAA is not getting the use of that facility donated.  It was a $9 ticket at Merrillville, so I would say the extra $4 you paid to watch the event was not too much.  To have a back to your seat instead of bleacher a$$ and back, an extra $4 does not seem like much to me.

I have taken the family to the Sox games for well under $100.  They run specials...you just need to look for them.

  11. Back in the day...I once watched a coach - at the direction of a ref - cut a kids hair (when that mattered) because the ref said it was to long.   The struggle was almost painful to watch as the young man protested and whined the entire time.  The coach basically had to hold the kid still with one hand and cut hair with the other.   The jawing back and forth was HILARIOUS!!!!!!

The coach finished and told the kid to report to the Ref for his check, and the kid turns and yell "It was Billy's hair that was to long NOT MINE!"

    I just about messed myself!

    Too funny.

  12. Could somebody explain a illegale body slam to me?  If you have your hand or arms underneath the opponent when they are coming back down to the mat, is that helping them back down to the mat?  Not for sure. That is why I am asking.

    Thank You

If your opponant bounces once off the mat it is a judgement call...if he bounces twice it is a slam...j/k.

  13. Some of my fav's:

Crown Point's Carnahan has chicken enchaladas.

Nice big spread at Mater Dei Holiday Classic.

North Newton is guaranteed to have deer meet in a chili or meatball or something.

Culver Academy sends you to the mess hall for a feast.

Further...a tourney without doughnuts and oj is a waste of my time.

  14. Where did Stevens come from?  Did he attend middle school in Merrillville?

The Stevens' have been in M-ville for at least two generations...maybe three.  They are a very good family, much like the Halsteds', Renns', Napulus' and many other's from both schools that grew up in their respective towns.

Don't lose sight of the fact that both programs are top notch, respectable, honest and fair programs.
