  1. BY WALT VANDERBUSH DAILY JOURNAL SPORTS CORRESPONDENT Purdue redshirt freshman wrestler Matt Fields , a Whiteland Community High School graduate, earned decisive wins in three matches last week. Competing at 125 pounds, Fields won 15-0 against a Findlay wrestler, 16-5 against an Ashland grappler and by fall in 3:32 in his match against an East Stroudsburg opponent. Purdue, which is one of 10 Big Ten teams ranked in the top 25 and is 11-1 in dual matches, defeated all three opponents by large margins, winning 29 of 30 individual matches
  2. Tech wrestlers Dominique Price, Storm Cosby don't hold back in practice By Steve Brooks / Star correspondent Posted: January 22, 2009 Tech High School wrestlers Dominique Price and Storm Cosby don't practice against each other exclusively, but the two face off a lot in the practice room. Obviously, the formula works because both wrestlers are 28-0. Price is ranked eighth in the state at 103 pounds, while Cosby is 16th at 119. Both are City champs and have plans for an extended postseason run. Each is quick to credit the other for at least part of his success. "We have a couple other partners, but we do practice a lot together," said Price, a sophomore. "I think it's really helped me get better." Cosby, a senior, said the practices between the two are pretty intense. "When we go against each other, we go all out," Cosby said. "When I go against other guys, sometimes it seems easy because of the way we practice together. It's a big help." Price finished 35-8 a year ago, coming within one win of advancing to the state meet -- despite finishing second in both the sectional and regional to eventual third-place state finisher Brandon Nelsen of Lawrence North. Price plans to take that next step this season. "I want to be on the podium (at Conseco Fieldhouse)," he said. "I think I can make the top four this year." Price, who said he's improved the most on his feet and on his shots, isn't overlooking anyone. He knocked off 10th-ranked Brian Harvey of Cathedral 9-7 in the finals of the City Tournament, and could face Harvey again in the sectional, regional and semistate. "I'm trying to win the sectional and the regional, and I'm not going in overconfident," Price said. "Harvey is very good, and it was pretty close the first time we wrestled." Cosby advanced to the regional while winning 31 matches in 2008. He spent a lot of time in the offseason fine-tuning his skills and attending various camps. "My biggest improvement from last year to this year is that last year I just went out and shot, shot, shot," Cosby said. "This year I'm actually thinking when I'm out there. I'm wrestling smarter this year. I can tell I've improved that way." If Price gets to state, Cosby wants to be there with him. "State is my No. 1 goal, but right now I'm focused on the little things," Cosby said. "I'll see (Cathedral's defending state champ and top-ranked Brandon) Wright in the sectional and regional. I've got to get through that first. The little stuff is what I need to focus on now."
  3. January 17, 2009 Decatur Central's Jake Hockenbury took brother's advice and hit the weights to help ramp up his performance By Steve Brooks Star correspondent Decatur Central High School wrestler Jake Hockenbury sums up last season's Perry Meridian Regional performance pretty brutally. But he said that day keyed what has been a strong junior season. "I choked at the regional, and I watched as two kids I'd beaten during the season (Perry Meridian's Blake Wood and Lawrence North's Qwion Booker) went on to state," Hockenbury said. "After that, my brother (2008 Decatur Central graduate Thomas Hockenbury) told me to get in the weight room. He was my inspiration for that." Jake hit the weight room hard, lifting every day over the summer and two or three times a day once school started. He's jumped from 145 pounds a year ago to 171 this season, and he's already at 22-3, surpassing his victory total from a year ago. "It's actually been kind of hard keeping up at that weight," Hockenbury said. "Over Christmas I was down to 166 pounds. I had to stuff myself full to keep the weight on. But I'm a tall guy (just under 6-foot-1). This weight is better for me." Hockenbury also worked on one specific aspect of his repertoire during the offseason, and he's seen a payoff there, too. "I've always been great on the bottom and on top, but I've never been a standing-up wrestler," he said. "I've been more of a freestyle wrestler, but worked on my shots all summer." The new moves, combined with the added muscle, have Hockenbury eyeing a longer state-tournament run this season. The past two seasons -- both ending in the regional -- didn't sit well with him. "The last two years have not really been what I've wanted. I've wrestled all my life, and what happened last year ate at me," he said. "I want to get to the second day at state this year. I'd like to get in the top five. I think if I can do that as a junior, then I can come back as a senior, hopefully get up to 189 pounds, and have people talking about me as a guy who can win state." Hockenbury is the No. 1 seed in today's Mid-State Conference meet at Franklin. Thomas Hockenbury, who joined the Army and is stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, is expected to be in attendance to watch Jake wrestle. "That's the best part of this weekend," Jake Hockenbury said. "He hasn't had a chance to see me this season yet."
  4. Patti Thieszen Sports Correspondent January 17, 2009 Monrovia Monrovia?s Bulldogs hosted ?Tuesday night at the Fights? against the rival Mooresville Pioneers. It may have been bitter cold outside, but the Pioneers were red hot on the mat. The Pioneers took the Bulldogs by storm, with a final tally of 72-5. The inexperience and youth of the Monrovia team was evident with the number of falls (10) taken out against the Bulldogs. ?The team just wrestled scared,? said Monrovia coach Todd Fakes. ?They saw how well Mooresville wrestled at the Classic. ?Mooresville has a lot of experience under their belt, and there is a lot to say for experience.? Mooresville coach Zach Errett was happy with the effort shown by his team. ?We won our last three dual meets and hope to carry over this momentum when we go to our conference meet at Franklin on Saturday,? he said. Mooresville freshman Jake Swigert pinned Patrick Hollcraft in 1:57 in the 103-pound weight class. The 112 class was won by decision, 15-8, going to Mooresville?s Rhonda Pryor. The senior wrestled freshman Alex Voss, who showed capability, even though he was outmanned in years and weight. Jacob Lannan, wrestling at 119, pinned Austin Cecil in 1:54. At 125, Pioneer Damon Martin won his match by a 6-3 decision against Kevin Giza. Monrovia?s Tanner Sizemore was out due to injury, so Brandon ?Ace? Gardiner wrestled the 140 weight class in his place. Mooresville?s Gavin Douglas got a run for his money with the JV wrestler, but won the match by pin in 3:50. Mooresville continued to win by fall at 135, this by Stuart Tollison. Monrovia?s only came from sophomore Dalton Clements by technical fall (15-0). The fastest pin of the night went to Mooresville?s 152-pound sophomore, Joey Juliano, who needed just 58 seconds. The pioneers also took the 189 and 215 classes with respective pins by Todd Hacker in 1:26 and Evan Wooding in 1:28. Monrovia will also be going to conference Saturday, traveling to the West-Central Conference bash at Cloverdale.
  5. Patti Thieszen Sports Correspondent January 19, 2009 CLOVERDALE The Monrovia Bulldog grapplers traveled to Cloverdale for the West Central Wrestling Conference with varying degrees of success but a solid overall effort. The Bulldogs proved hard to beat in the first round. Eight wrestlers advanced, with five wins by falls. The quickest pins in the round were by freshman Alex Voss at 103 pounds and senior Austin Cecil at 119 in 32 and 34 seconds. In the 125 pound weight class, freshman Kevin Giza was in control the whole match and pinned his opponent in 1:21. Brandon Gardiner, wrestling for the injured Tanner Sizemore in the 130 weight class, came out aggressive and pinned North Putnam?s Josh Eising in 1:30. Dalton Clements at 140 also won by fall in :52. The 112, 152 and 215 weight classes were won by forfeit. The Bulldogs suffered only two losses the round ? Tony Patterson at 135 and Chandler Joyner at 145. ?Overall we did well and continue to get in better shape,? Monrovia coach Todd Fakes said. ?I?m especially happy with Kevin Giza in our 125 weight class and our 140 pound weight class wrestler, Dalton Clements,? Fakes said. ?We had a good first round, we just need to keep it going.? Giza and Clements went on to the wrestle backs and due to a bye and another forfeit, both advanced to the second consolation round. In the semifinal round, the Bulldogs did not fare as well with seven wrestlers out of eight failing to advance to the championship round. Giza was the only winner this round with a 10-4 decision against North Putnam?s Joe Mindiola. The highlight of the semifinal round was at 140 pounds. It pitted Monrovia?s sophomore, Dalton Clements, against Cascade senior, Garrett Smith. Both were aggressive and driven and the two racked up points against each other. It was tied 8-8 with 25 seconds left in the third period with both wrestlers scrambling to score. Unfortunately, Cascade prevailed and the match went to Smith 10-8. The second round of consolations followed with wins by Voss, 103, by decision 5-3; Patrick Hollcraft, 112, by forfeit; Cecil, 119 by fall (59 seconds); Gardiner, 130, by forfeit; Clements at 140 by pin (3:52), Kenny Hollcraft, 189, by fall (3:42); and Kurtiss Faulkenberg, 215, also by fall (44 seconds). Coming out of the last consolation round, the Bulldogs advanced seven of eleven wrestlers to the final round and one, Giza, to the championship round. Giza had the Bulldogs best outcome for the day, finishing second. ?Kevin controlled the tempo in his final match, but he?s young and he just got caught,? Fakes said. Giza was pinned by Trevor Teal, Greencastle, in the second period. Monrovia placed sixth for the day with Voss, P. Hollcraft, Gardiner, and K. Hollcraft finishing in fourth place. Cecil took third place for the day by pinning South Putnam?s T.J. Franklin in 42 seconds. Also taking third place was Clements by fall in 1:51. ?Clements should have been in the championship round. He got seated fourth and that put him at a disadvantage for the day,? said Fakes. Sophomore Faulkenberg also took third place in the 215 weight class. He pinned Cascade?s Ryan Foncannon in 51 seconds. The Bulldogs host Indian Creek Tuesday for a dual meet.
  6. By Ross Flint rflint@reportert.com FRANKLIN What was hoped to be a day spent competing for a conference championship turned into a disappointment for the Martinsville High School wrestling team after two members didn?t make weight. Andrew Bowman (103), who entered the morning as the No. 2 seed in his weight class, and Caleb Purtlebaugh (130), who entered the day as the No. 1 seed, didn?t make weight, forcing the Artesians to forfeit those two classes. ?We were set to make a run, but two young men didn?t make weight,? coach Lee Liden said. ?That kinda put a bad cast over the whole day.? The Artesians did come away with four individual champions. Derek Fisher (112), Briar Runyan (160) and Jordan Krulik (145), won championships as was expected with their No. 1 seeding, as did James Walker (140), who is now 18-1 this season. Walker decisioned Plainfield junior Dalton Boyer, 6-0. ?James Walker just controlled people,? Liden said. Fisher, now 19-2, won his on an 11-2 major decision over Franklin junior Cameron Williams. ?Derek Fisher had a great match in the finals,? Liden said. ?He controlled his opponents.? Krulik (18-1) pinned Plainfield sophomore Dustin Parrish and Runyan (21-0 with all of them on pins) was for the first time this season forced to wrestle more than one period, but he pinned Franklin senior Josh Midrick in 2:39 for his title. Derek Bratton (125) finished as the runner-up in his class after losing in overtime to Franklin sophomore Cole Van Horn. T.C. Frederick (119) came in third after winning an 8-4 decision over Decatur Central junior Drew Morris. ?To their credit, other guys stepped up,? Liden said. ?But giving away two weight classes is tough. If we just come in third in those classes, we?re there. Finishing fifth were freshmen Jacob Underwood (152), and Joe Schoolcraft (171), and juniors Ethan Bodi (189) and Will Rogers (285). ?Some of our freshmen wrestled well,? Liden said. Finishing sixth were Jacob Ferguson (135) and Luke Knox (215). Ferguson lost to Whiteland junior Branden Brewer and Knox was pinned by Plainfield junior Sean Loughlin. Martinsville travels to Plainfield on Tuesday.

  11. January 16, 2009 Falcon is wrestler of week By Michael Pointer michael.pointer@indystar.com Perry Meridian's Sampson Cook was named the state's high school wrestler of the week by Indiana Mat.com. Cook earned the honor by winning the 130-pound title at the Bellmont Super Duals, where he pinned three-time state champion Josh Harper of Mishawaka. The championship vaulted Cook to No. 2 in IndianaMat.com's state rankings, behind only Pike's D'Marcus Spencer. Cook raised his record to 17-1 by winning his match against Cathedral on Wednesday.

  13. January 16, 2009 Carmel's Hollander chops foes down to size Carmel's little big man excels By Steve Brooks Star correspondent To say Carmel High School heavyweight wrestler Jesse Hollander is giving up a little weight would be an understatement. Hollander -- who weighed 235 pounds during football season as a backup running back -- has dropped down to 220, but giving up 50-60 pounds to opponents in most matches doesn't keep the Carmel sophomore from excelling. He's 16-3 heading into this weekend, with two losses to third-ranked Jonathon Clark of Jefferson and seventh-ranked Ethan Cuevas of North Central. It's not a bad showing for a wrestler who saw action in only one varsity meet last season. "I am (surprised by Hollander's success), but I'm also not," said Carmel coach John Kopnisky. "We noticed last year that Jesse was coming along really well, and we told him that if he kept plugging at it, he would be successful. "I didn't think we'd see it this soon, and I think he's a little surprised, too, but he's also really excited. He's found his niche at heavyweight." Kopnisky said Hollander's athleticism lets him be successful against bigger opponents. "He's a good-sized 220, and he's powerful and fast," Kopnisky said, "but his technique with his shots is great. His takedowns are where he's doing this. He's as good as our kids who are 125 pounds, 145 pounds, when it comes to taking shots. Heavyweights don't take shots like that. He's able to shoot in against the bigger kids and put them on their back, and those kids aren't expecting that." Kopnisky said Hollander also has to use strategy against true heavyweights. "Against kids his size, Jesse can bang with them the whole match and tire them out," he said, "but with the bigger guys he has to be patient. If he tries to push those guys around . . . it's going to tire him out." As the rankings stand, Cuevas is the only ranked wrestler Hollander would see before the state meet. "It's always a possibility (to advance to state)," Kopnisky said. "It has a lot to do with the draw and whether you're wrestling to your performance level when you get out on the mat, but certainly it's possible for him."

  17. With eight dual meet wins, Bulldogs exceed coach?s expectations Phil Friend Sports Editor MICHIGANTOWN - Clinton Central wrestling coach Austin Faulkner always uses the team's regular-season dual meet with Southmont as a gauge to where his Bulldogs stand. This year's meet, which took place last week, brought a mixed bag of results. Central lost, 45-28, but had to forfeit three matches. Take away the 18 points the Bulldogs lost there, and you have a one-point victory for Faulkner's squad. Not bad, considering they're going through a huge youth movement and that Southmont advanced as a team to the semistate last year. "They're always good," Faulkner said. "We wrestled really well, we're just three guys short from being a solid team and that's the way it's been all year. "Our older kids know what they have to do to make up for that. Pin when they can pin, and our younger guys have to stay off their back when they can. If you go out and do your job individually, the team takes care of itself." As a team, Central is 8-12. The Bulldogs started off the year going 1-2 at the county meet and followed with a 2-3 mark at the Western Invitational, in which they defeated South Bend St. Joe's (46-22) and Taylor (40-36) but lost to Western (60-18), Hamilton Heights (66-10) and Kokomo (48-36). They followed that up with another 2-3 performance, this one at Rensselaer Central. They beat Ritter (58-24) and Dupont Manual (42-30) but lost to West Central (48-32), Cass (45-33) and Beech Grove (42-33). At the Seeger invite just before Christmas, they went 3-2, beating South Newton (48-36), Rockville (46-33) and North White (47-36) and losing to North Vermillion (42-39) and Seeger (42-39). "If you would've told me in November that we'd win eight duals I probably wouldn't have believed you," Faulkner said. "I'm happy with the way we're wrestling. It's crunch time now and they've got to pick it up and be ready for the tournament." One thing the team has, though is talent on the individual level. Senior Josh Petty (160 pounds) and junior Taylor Evans (145) are both 21-2 on the year. Although the Bulldogs had no individual champions at last week's Tipton Invitational, they did have three runners-up: Sophomore Cody Leicht (103), Evans and Andy Jacquet (215). But Petty and Evans have been the standouts so far this year. Evans' goal is to reach the 100-win mark before he graduates, and has already accumulated 74 in less than three years after going 27-9 as a freshman and 26-6 last year. "I just really wanted to improve my record over last year," Evans said. "My overall goal is to clean up all the slop over the past few years. I still got a long way to go but if I plan on getting anywhere past regionals, I still have a lot to accomplish at the end of this year." Petty, on the other hand, was more of a work-in-progress that has blossomed. After suffering a concussion during the first match of last year's sectional, Petty dedicated himself in the offseason, spending 2-3 days a week in Delphi wrestling and competing in AAU tournaments, among other things. "I spent a lot of money and put a lot of effort into offseason wrestling to get better," Petty said. "It's my senior year so I was going to do whatever it took to get me in good position. Our sectional's tough and you can't just be decent. You got to be good." Central competes in the Zionsville Sectional, which features schools like Carmel, Hamilton Southeastern, Westfield and Zionsville. "Josh has come a long way in one year," Faulkner said. "He's pretty determined and focused on what he wants to accomplish." They're not the only two doing great things. Leicht, Jake Evans (152) and Jacquet are all 18-5 and Adam Thomas (112) is 17-6. "I've definitely learned a lot more moves and worked on my technique," Leicht said. "Last year, I just kind of went out there and didn't know many moves and just tried to win." The sophomore is two wins away from reaching the 20-win plateau, one of his goals coming into the season. With such a young squad, Faulkner likes what he sees in the future. There are a handful of eighth-graders who could compete next year and 11 or 12 in the seventh-grade who have potential. "The kids are there, they're just not here yet," Faulkner said.
  18. MOORESVILLE As Senior Nights go, this one turned out all right, especially for Mooresville?s three seniors. Stuart Tollison, Rhonda Pryor and Ryan Bailey all emerged victorious, as did the Pioneers, who decisioned short-handed Decatur Central 57-16 in a Mid-State Conference match in the Curry Center Gymnasium. Bailey needed just 31 seconds to pin junior George Cowans in their 285-pound match. ?It?s Senior Night, but it?s a normal night. You go out and do the same thing you always do,? he said. ?The objective is to win. ?You just do your job and do what you can do to help the team. ?But yeah, it does feel good to win this one.? Tollison, wrestling at 135 pounds, used his speed to get the upper hand and built a 15-2 lead over freshman Kyle Powell before pinning him in 4:15. ?A dominating win. That helps to cap a good senior season,? Tollison said. Most of the season, Tollison has wrestled at 140 pounds. ?I?ve not gotten to wrestle my (135-pound) competition yet,? he said. ?So I?m looking forward to the competition.? Tollison said wrestling at a heavier weight has been a good experience, though he?s absorbed seven defeats against his 14 victories. ?It?s a god thing,? he said. ?Hopefully, with my winning percentage, I?ll get a good seed and do well,? he said of next week?s Mid-State Conference meet. ?We have five matches this weekend (at Madison), so hopefully, I can get five more wins and get a good seed.? Pryor didn?t have an opponent, so won her 112-pound match by forfeit. She wasn?t overly disappointed. ?I?d rather wrestle, but these are easy wins. I enjoy those,? she said with a laugh. ?Pryor said the hardest part came before the match began. ?I do my job, and make weight,? she said. ?That?s the hardest part. Cutting down to 112 isn?t easy.? Being a girl wrestling in what has primarily been a boys? sport is not as unique as it once was, according to Pryor. ?Before this year, I only wrestled one girl,? she said. ?This year, we have two or three in our conference. They?re popping up more and more.? That, in turn, promotes more interest in her side of the sport, Prior noted. ?A lot more people watch my matches, because I?m a girl,? she said. ?But that?s not bad. It?s a good thing.? Good things were plentiful for the Pioneers in the match that began at 152 pounds. Joey Juliano started the Pioneers? run with a technical fall against Dennis Popp. At 189, Todd Hacker needed just 1:36 to pin Tyler Bailey. Evan Wooding was another forfeit winner at 215. Jake Swigert won by forfeit at 103 pounds. Damon Martin outpointed Zomice Barr 19-7 at 126 pounds. Gavin Douglas won by forfeit at 130 pounds before Tollison won his match. Matt Gibson won the 140-pound match by forfeit to give the Pioneers their final point total. Pioneer coach Zach Errett was impressed. ?Joey looked good, continuing from the Holiday Classic,? he said. ?Todd Hacker and Ryan Bailey looked great. Damon Martin has been so close to winning a lot of matches. It?s good to see him come out and dominate the way he did.? Hawks battle well Decatur Central?s wins came at 145, 160, 171, and 119 pounds.
  19. MONROVIA The Monrovia wrestling team hosted its annual five-way wrestling meet at Branch McCracken Gymnasium. The Bulldogs won two and lost two matches, and three Bulldog grapplers went undefeated on the day: Kevin Giza at 125 pounds, Dalton Clements at 140 pounds and Kurtiss Faulkenberg at 215. Monrovia coach Todd Fakes was happy overall with the team?s results. We have been working on conditioning and it showed today,? Fakes said. In the first round, the Bulldogs went against Danville. The Warriors pulled out the win a tight match, 41-40. Monrovia had three pins in the ll9, 140 and 215 pound weight classes, the fastest by Faulkenberg at 215 in 47 seconds. The one win by decision (6-0) went to freshman Kevin Giza at 125. Chandler Joyner, 145, won by tech fall, 16-1, against senior Matt McKinley. Monrovia went against Cardinal Ritter in the second round and lost 54-30. All the wins were by falls. Sophomore Tanner Sizemore at 130 pounds was in control throughout his match and pinned Ritter senior Justin Graff in 1:52. Dalton Clements, another sophomore, won by fall also. There was a fair amount of forfeits on both sides but the round against Ritter went to Monrovia with the final score of 54-30. The team got a rest by having a bye third round. In the fourth round Monrovia lost to Owen Valley 42-36. Owen Valley had three wins in a row in the 135, 140, and 145 weight classes. Alex Voss, at 103, took Owen Valley?s Austin Miller to the mat and on his back with minimal effort. He won his match by decision (17-3). Highlight of the round was in the 125-pound weight class. Kevin Giza at 125 went into overtime and scored 28 seconds in to win the match. It wasn?t enough to salvage the round with the final score of 42-36 to Owen Valley. The Bulldogs took the fifth round against South Putnam with a final score of 42-36. Kenny Hollcraft had Monrovia?s fastest pin of the day in 25 seconds in this round. Other winners this round, all by falls, included Patrick Hollcraft in 1:02, Giza in 1:09, Clements in 1:40 and Faulkenberg in 41 seconds. Fakes said the conditioning was what helped the Bulldogs today. ?They were not to happy about working on their conditioning this past week, but it showed in their performance and I am happy with how they all did today.? Fakes said.
