Hartleroad was the aggressor throughout his semifinal. I spent most of the match wondering why the refs didn't call stalling against his opponent, who would only give ground and not directly attack throughout the match.

On top of that they actually called stalling on Hartleroad when he was trying to control Smith who was running to escape! Smith backed up all over the mat but was able to turn so he backed up to the edge and then backed to the center.

We told you guys coming in that it was a bit cooler than most venues. Seating was great in my opinion.

"A bit cooler..." LOL. I didn't get the memo despite following this site for the last three months.  I have been to scores of wrestling events and hundreds of basketball games over the last 60 years and I have never been in an arena or fieldhouse that cold! I'm glad your seats were great and I hope they were in the section you requested.

From a distance, seemed like Evansville embraced the State Finals and did a nice job! Maybe some tips for future State Finals? Don't recall shuttles or food trucks in the past. Do recall being asked what's going on? We weren't staffed for this. Thanks to all tnvolved, especially the wrestlers laying it down on the mat!

One tip for future state finals: don't use Ford Center again! People in our section were bringing blankets for the second day. They were wearing their hoodies up and their coats all day.  I understand Evansville may not be accustomed to Indiana winters, but that was ridiculous.

The Fort Wayne Coliseum has experience hosting hockey games all winter and I have never frozen at a hockey game there like I did this weekend.  The city of Evansville was beautiful, though.

Didn’t think it was such an egregious thing to not reveal my picks.  From now on I will.  106. Boyd 113. Dickman. 120. Jendreas. 126. Shaefer. 132. Thrine. 138 Leavell. 144. Arberry 150 Kresja. 157 Pellot 165. Backpack Rhinehart 175. Leech 190. Weaver 215. Clark 285. Clark.

Some folks around here are very sensitive when you even joke about their picks! I'll just copy yours, except I will pick Beck at 285 to get credit for beating Clark this time.

  5. My father was a basketball coach for 50 years and he told me what one of his former players told him: Long after the scores of the games are forgotten, you remember the good times you had with the guys.

Next month will be 58 years since that part of my life ended and I find myself thinking back on all the funny things we shared as a team, and I realize how much more I value those memories than the conference and tournament trophies we won.

The pain of your loss will fade with the years, but the memories of the team will remain.

"people down south don't get this,  We are blue collar,  we work hard,  if you are stalling, we are going to call you on it,"

But it took one minute for him to admit those quick stalling calls are fake, and next match to complain about the stall call on CP!

Not criticizing the announcing, just disagreeing on stalling calls.

    157-Meyer by pin

165- I like Summersett in this one because he has a little more offense and did pin Heiser last time…(I do know it was the first match of the year, but also freshman vs upperclassmen cancels that one out)

    190- Wenk

Hwt- Wurm I’m not sure what the head to head is but I like wurm.

Cruz defeated Wurm last year, but as Scarlett O'Hara said, "Tomorrow is another day!"

  8. Since it involves the big toe, taping is not likely to do much good. I would strongly recommend consultation with a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon as nonunion could lead to long term consequences. Most such injuries would be treated with a rigid platform shoe, which shows how seriously medical professionals view such injuries.

I am sorry to hear of your son's injury and wish him well.

I think you're hottest take here is about freestyle points, not college riding time.

OK, if I gotta fix freestyle too, when the guy on bottom goes turtle and pulls in his hands so you can't turn him and the ref lets him get up I think you have to give his opponent a point for the "nonescape."

Never seen  Greco, so I can't fix that, if it even needs fixing.

Maybe during the faceoff we could dim the lights and have smoke and the Undertaker chimes... nah!

I'd argue you've seen more high school kids score turns.  Even in the heavyweights, at least in the Big10, they're constantly attacking and looking for something to use for a turn/tilt, but they're just really good at defending it.  It's subtle, but still there.

could be. i will watch for it.

  11. 1 minute ago, rrschott said:

riding time only matters if you accumulate more than a minute surplus at the end of the match, which is an incredibly hard thing to do.  Most of those guys also aren't just laying there; they're constantly attacking wrists/elbows/ankles looking for the turn because they know the other guy is good enough to get a takedown and swing the match if they don't score more points (if they weren't, they wouldn't be there).  Honestly, I love the format, and I kind of wish they'd bring the 4 points for a 5 count near fall and the neutral danger scoring to high school.

Actually, I have seen more HS wrestlers looking to turn and more college wrestlers looking for riding time, especially heavyweights.

I agree with the 4 point 5 count near fall and it would have been my second suggestion.

  12. High school done so I gotta watch college.  Almost as ridiculous as freestyle with 2 points with each flip.

Get rid of riding time in college wrestling. 3 points for takedown. Now if you get an escape and another escape after choosing down on period 2 you are still 1 point down.

Now you still have to take him down to win. No more lying on top to get points instead of trying to turn.

    OK, hit me!

Easily the worst call of the tournament and up there for one of the worst I've ever seen at any level. What are we doing here? That's embarrassing and unacceptable on this stage. How does his assistant not overturn it when they discuss? Two officials are that incompetent?

Honest question, how are officials chosen for this event? Is it based on merit or seniority?

Compare with the call from the semis with Paul Clark when Jones had both hands on the mat near the end of period 2 and no takedown was awarded.

The field in 23 was deep, and we saw some giants fall.

Who had the biggest shock/upset of the weekend?

    Rioux taking Horn out?

    Thrine taking out Frazier?

IMO, Hockaday, Dickman, and Thrine could all be 4-timers and cement their legacy, in a age where club wrestling is rampant.

Indiana wrestling is getting so good,

and all the credit goes to the boys/girls who put in the work. Well done!

Bollinger took Horn out 8-1 at semistate with the 1 being when Bollinger cut him to start the second period. And that was the best performance against Bollinger I saw all season. What surprised me was Rioux and Dickman both being so good!

I've been wondering all morning whey they don't have someone with a towel to tap the referee as time runs out.  I've seen several matches where they wrestled for 2-3 seconds after time ran out, a couple times even where someone at the table had to yell out "Time"

They wrestled for thirty seconds on mat 1 before starting the clock at the beginning of one match, so I guess they don't take timing too seriously here. Nobody scored, so I guess it didn't matter...
