  1. Thanks for the information, I'm excited for this event. But why are the IN girls being split across 3 mats? The whole match will be over in 20 mins and no one will be able to watch or cheer for one another since they'll be either wrestling or getting warmed up at the same time. Seems to defeat the purpose of having it as a true dual and more like what we do for junior high events when we're trying to power through as many matches in as little time as possible, but don't care about the team score.
  2. Maybe being completely on top of the guy in like a grapevine position, then I would agree - hips in and head up. But body perpendicular from a half turn? Not convinced there.
  3. Why does every coach yell "head up!" when their wrestler is in a pinning combination, like after you turn someone with a half nelson? I understand the physics of it, that it's supposed to expand your chest and in theory put more pressure on the bottom guy. However, I know of very few good wrestlers who finish pins with their head high. It's usually the opposite - buried as tight as possible so there's no space or breathing room. Yet every coach in the gym screams "head up!" from that position. I don't understand where, when, or why that started.
  4. Let's not forget the ladies... 100 Rianne Murphy - Region Wrestling Academy 106 Isabel Kaplan - CIA Kendall Moe - Contenders MaKenize Smith - Maurer Coughlin 118 Kylie Benoit 124 Rose Kaplan - CIA Ava Strayer - Region Wrestling Academy 132 Ella Gahl - Charlie’s Angels Maddie Marsh - Red Cobra Hannah Seitzinger 148 Rhaigyn Trenary - The Fort
  5. Was the finals mat darker than usual? It was too dark to really see what was going on and we had good seats, so we just ended up watching the video screen above the mat, which seems dumb. Why don't they have a brighter spotlight over the mat for the finals? I heard a bunch of people from the crowd screaming about it, but there's nothing they could do at that point.
  6. Mine worked for both sessions on Saturday, eventually after waiting a while. Does anyone know the exact times when Session 2 lets out and Session 3 lets back in? Trying to figure out the hours we're kicked out of the building between sessions on Saturday. Thanks.
  7. No idea. I was wondering this myself. Yes, she did start off the year in the rankings, but then was rapidly removed so someone must've been notified that she wasn't competing.
  8. Interesting, ok thanks for the clarification. So basically for the top seed placements in the bracket quarters it's totally random draw, but the overall structure isn't entirely random since the 1/4 from a given regional are intentionally separated from the 2/3 into different halves of the state bracket.
  9. Ok, thank you. Two follow-up questions: 1- That makes sense within each quarter of the bracket, but how do they determine placement of the 4 top seeds? In other words, do the 4 semi-state champs get randomly placed in the 4 quarters of the bracket or is there a seeding to their order? In other words, in your simulated bracket, A1 and C1 would meet in the semi-finals. What if those are the two top ranked wrestlers in the state? Is that just the luck of the draw or do the top ones intentionally get placed on opposite halves of the bracket? 2- Is the 2nd place finisher from each semi-state automatically placed on the opposite half of the bracket of the 1st place finisher they just lost to? In other words, if I lost to Jesse Mendez in the finals of semi-state would I be guaranteed to not see him again until the state finals or is there a chance I could run into him again in the quarters or semis? From your simulated example, it looks like the latter.
  10. Forgive my naive question, but when you all say "done the same as the boys" can someone explain what that means? I don't know how the boys state bracket is created. Does the #1 from one semi-state tournament automatically get paired up with the #4 from a different semi-state, and same for 2 vs. 3, etc.? Or do all 16 names get thrown into a hat and the whole thing gets reseeded from scratch regardless of semi-state placement? Thank you.
  11. In my opinion, this is the 2nd biggest storyline of the girl's season. One has been the huge rise in numbers due to the influx of first year wrestlers. Two is this weight class. It goes without saying that this is the deepest, toughest, and most talented weight class that the Indiana girls statement tournament series has ever seen. It's likely one of the toughest girls brackets of any state in the country this year at any weight class. All of these girls have been Fargo All-Americans, or champs in the case of Smith, with the exception of Ocampo who just hasn't entered the tournament yet. I partly wish these individuals would be more spread out so they could all win state titles, but I also want to see them them battle each other on Friday! Just to throw another wrinkle in there, it's crazy to think this weight class is actually weaker than it could have otherwise been. 2022 Fargo champ and recent Midlands champ, Rianne Murphy, isn't entered into the girl's state tournament, but would have probably been at this weight.
  12. Speaking of seeding, anyone know how the girls state tournament will be seeded? In prior years, there was only one north and one south regional so the two one-seeds were just put opposite from one another on the bracket. This year with the new semi-state model, there will be four one-seeds so it's unclear to me how they will set-up the state brackets to determine which specific one-seeds would meet up in the semi's vs finals.
  13. Agreed. The most important thing is that there are numerous tournaments this year and the opportunities are increasing dramatically. It just seems like putting the top girls on opposite sides of the bracket from one another so the placements reflect their actual ordering and the finals are competitive is such an easy no-brainer thing to do. Then again, I don't run tournaments so what do I know!
  14. I completely agree. I noticed the exact same thing at pretty much every girls tournament so far this season. I don't know why folks aren't just using IndianaMat's rankings or having coaches provide seeding criteria. It's very obvious who the top 3 or 4 girls are in each weight class and there's often a massive drop-off in ability after those top several girls with much of the bracket populated by first-year wrestlers. It shouldn't be hard to separate them so they meet in the finals instead of one of them getting 5th place for no reason.
  15. My main question is about timing. As far as I am aware, nothing functionally changes during the emerging sport process, it's only until it's officially sanctioned. According to what I've read, that happens after 50% of IHSAA membership schools are participating in the sport. In the article I just saw, there are 407 IHSAA member schools and there are currently 113 schools with at least some girl wrestlers. So, if I read that right, that means 204 schools need to offer girls wrestling (i.e., 50% of 407) to sanction? And how are they defining "participation"? Is having just one girl enough to be considered a "team"? In the past, I've read things where it needed to be something like 8 or more girls at a school. I've also read that these target numbers have to be hit for 2 consecutive years before it moves forward. It seems like defining what the target number of schools is, what defines a school having a girls team (one vs. multiple participants), and how long this target needs to be met for, are the key issues. This will determine whether this happens in a few years or much, much longer. If 204 high schools need to have an 8-girl team for 2 consecutive seasons, that might take 20 years!
  16. Jeff has an extremely similar gym to EC, in terms of capacity and viewing options. I'd consider that a lateral move.
  17. Completely agree. There's not enough parking. There's not enough good seating. You can only view all 4 mats from a small section of the arena. People are constantly standing in the way along the railing and the poor security guards need to patrol a bunch of loud and rowdy people for the entire day. A few encounters I was sure were about to turn into fist fights. Was well run, but not a great place to watch a tournament.
  18. I think you all are talking about two totally different things. One - facts, two - social graces. Let's move this away from boys/girls and weight classes, since that seems controversial. My kid wrestles in one of the weaker regionals in the state. That's a fact, the statistics over the years on state qualifiers/placements bear this out and I acknowledge that. However, I would be pretty pissed if someone walked up to him right after winning regionals and told him that he wouldn't even make it out of sectionals if we lived elsewhere. Even if they're right! You could make the same argument comparing a state title in Indiana vs. a stronger/weaker state, or the same weight class being stronger/weaker from one year to the next. Someone always has it easier/harder than another person. Everyone knows that, just don't be a jerk about it or intentionally try to diminish someone's accomplishments because of it.
  19. Thank you for the correction. Thought she was 106, or whatever the 106 equivalent was back then.
  20. By my account, there were 4 yesterday (Crull, Ocampo, Cantu, Buchanan; but correct me if I missed someone), which is definitely a new record for IN. I believe there has only ever been 1 or 2 in a given year. Special shout out to Buchanan who qualified at 113. We're starting to rack up a fair number of 106 lb qualifiers over the years (I can think of at least 7 girls), but I believe Kayla Miracle is the only other semistate qualifier to weigh more than 106 (qualified at 120 her jr year).
  21. A few more: Joy Cantu, 2nd place at 106 in East Chicago Rose Kaplan, 3rd place at 120 in Lafayette Jeff Kasidy Schenk, 4th place at 113 in Arsenal Tech
  22. Congrats. Life has a great women's program and, based on what I've seen, Anna is going to win lots of matches for them in the future. I'm not sure there's another girl in the state who's improved as much as she has over the past several years. Trajectory is straight up on this one!
  23. Oh, my bad. Thanks for the clarification. Guess I need to purchase the magazine then!
  24. Why does this and all the boys rankings only show the #1 person in each weight class and not #s 2-10? Or is that just my computer being weird? Doing it on my phone too though.
  25. So, just to clarify, there's no pre-registration, you just show up on the day of if you qualify? Also, do you know what they're doing for weigh-ins? The North/South qualifiers were +4 lb allowance with shoes and singlet on. I assume they're doing the same for state? A little confusing because at Indy Nationals it's +2 lbs with shoes and singlet.
